Chapter 8

Razr clicked two small stones together until a fire had started. She then cradled the tiny flame in her fingertips and held it over Syber's wound.

"The heat will cause it to heal." She said softly.

Syber nodded, closing his eyes with relief as the warmth washed away the pain. Slowly, the alloy began to reform itself along the cut. Razr pulled him to his feet once it was healed and snuffed the little flame out with a quick wave of her hand.

"Now let's see those reflexes of yours in action again." Razr said with a challenging grin.

Syber shrugged. "Alright." he replied, as she took on a fighting stance.

She aimed a kick at his chest, but this time he was ready for her. He spun around and ducked, looking over his shoulder with a smirk. He was met with a hard kick to his back that sent him sprawling on all fours.

"Never turn your back to your opponent." Razr said.

Syber leaped to his feet and threw a punch at her shoulder before she grabbed his hand and kicked his legs out from under him. Syber stumbled, but not without pulling her down with him. Razr got to her knees and twisted his arm behind his back.

"That hurts!" Syber exclaimed.

"Of course it does. Do you think the enemy is going to play nice?" she replied.

Syber reached around and try to free himself but before he knew it she had him pinned with his arms crossed behind his back. Syber rolled, throwing her off. The tides had turned and Razr was now pinned beneath his weight.

"That was quick thinking!" Razr said.

"Well, thanks..." he started.

"But not quick enough!" she said, throwing him off and sending him sprawling forwards.

Syber pulled himself to his knees just as she sprung onto his back from behind, shoving his head into the ground.

"You'd be dead by now ten times over if this were a real fight." Razr said.

"Which is precisely why it's a perfect time for an ambush." an unfamiliar voice called from the distance.

The second she heard it, Razr went rigid with apprehension and leaped into a standing position, pulling Syber to his feet.

"Who was that?" Syber asked.

"Syber get behind me." Razr snapped, raising her arms with the blades facing outwards.

"But why?" Syber asked.

"No time to explain. Just head for cover as soon as you see an opening. I'll distract her." Razr whispered.

"Who is she?" Syber whispered back, as the sun glinted off the shell of a mortarin in the distance.

"Cordak." Razr growled, spitting in the dirt as she said the name.

"I see you brought me some fresh metal to play with." the newcomer said, walking towards them with a sway in her hips. Her black shell with deep royal blue accents shimmered in the sunlight. Syber's jaw dropped. Cordak was strikingly forged, with an hourglass figure that put Razr to shame. Compared to this new beauty, Razr was thin and breakable whereas Cordak was forged to take a hit.

"Syber, get to the cave." Razr said through clenched teeth.

"Go on. I'm not stopping you." Cordak mused with a foxy grin.

"Don't listen to her!" Razr snapped.

Cordak chuckled. "What harm would come if he did?"

At that, Razr let out a vicious yell and ran at Cordak, the blades on her arms ready for impact. Cordak dodged Razr and reached for a holster on her waist, pulling out a small quill-like object. She held it up before Razr's eyes before pulling a shield like object from her back that had axe like blades on two sides and a crossbow string across the back. Razr regained her bearings and tackled Cordak around the waist just as she was attaching the shield like weapon to her right arm.

"Syber, GO! NOW!" Razr screamed.

Cordak tossed her aside and resumed preparing her weapon. It was almost as if she was doing every action in slow motion just to taunt Razr. Syber stared at Cordak, frozen in the moment and trying to figure out what to do.

"Go on, Syber. I won't stop you." Cordak teased. "However I doubt my ammunition will be so accommodating."

At that, Syber looked at Razr for direction and saw a look of pure terror in her eyes. Slowly, he looked at Cordak and then back at Razr who was silently pleading for him to get out of there. Syber turned around and began to run. He bolted towards the cave with determination in every step.

"Go on, Syber! Run." Cordak called after him, pulling the pink quill back on the bowstring of her weapon.

Razr leaped to her feet and aimed a slice at Cordak's face before throwing her to the ground. "You're not going to touch him!" Razr yelled, wrapping her hands around Cordak's throat while she was down.

"You're right." Cordak replied with a nonchalant grin. "I won't lay a hand on him." she continued, weakly gesturing to something in Syber's direction.

Razr looked up from her opponent in the direction she had pointed and noticed the reflection of another Mortarin's shell right over the entrance of the cave.

"NO!" Razr yelled, reaching out a hand in protest as Syber rushed towards his supposed fate.

Cordak used Razr's distraction as an opportunity to slice open her chest cavity and throw her to the ground. Sparks and plasma gushed from the wound as Razr let out a horrified shriek. Razr fell backwards, going limp from the pain and watching helplessly as Syber was tackled from above by the unknown warrior.

"I'm surprised your boyfriends aren't around to have your back." Cordak said, standing over Razr with smug superiority.

"When... they... get... back!..." Razr sputtered, clamping her hands over her injury.

"I'm sorry, what was that? I didn't catch what you said over the sound of your plasma spilling out." Cordak mused.

Cordak then turned around and watched with a grin as Syber desperately tried to fight off her companion.

"I think I'm getting bored of watching your new recruit fail so miserably. Where in Mortari did you find the kid? It's not like you had a chance at getting to the forge." Cordak said, once again pulling a dart back on the string of her weapon and aiming for Syber.

"Your fight is with me! Leave him alone!" Razr yelled back.

Mercury beaded in her eyes. Cordak turned around to look at Razr and replied, "Better to neutralize an opponent before it becomes a threat...!"

Cordak hardly finished her sentence before a pale green blur threw her to the ground in a savage fury and began clawing at her face. She yelled in alarm and kicked back at him. Geist responded by grabbing her neck in his teeth and shaking his head like a mad dog.

Syber struggled against his own opponent as she held him down. His silvery grey shell had been hard to distinguish against the barren landscape and the light of the sun. Syber watched with fear and confusion as Cordak and Geist tore at each other while Razr lay bleeding out on the ground.

"Why are you doing this?" Syber asked the warrior who was pinning him to the ground.

He blinked in surprise. "You don't know?" he said.

Syber shook his head, his eyes wide with shock.

"Our objective is to take you out so that we can take your resources and territory. By weakening the enemy we gain an advantage in the war." he replied.

"But why? We never did anything to you!" Syber pleaded, trying to push her off of his chest.

"I'm only here to do what I'm told." he replied.

Syber stared off towards the main commotion and saw Wicket appearing over the horizon.

"OVER HERE!" Syber screamed, trying to throw his assailant off.

At that, the enemy warrior clamped a hand over his mouth. "Keep quiet and we will let you live."

Noticing the scuffle, Wicket came running forward and stopped to lean over Syber.

"Halt or the kid dies." Syber's attacker said, flashing his claws by Syber's throat.

"Now I'd like to see that." Wicket replied.

The enemy mortarin raised the hand that was over Syber's mouth in preparation to deliver the final blow.

"WAIT!" Syber screamed.

Wicket and the warrior both looked at him in surprise.

"Please, help! Razr's hurt!" Syber said.

At that, Wicket narrowed his eyes. The mortarin holding him down laughed and said, "She never had a chance."

"You did WHAT?!" Wicket screeched, grabbing the silvery one by his throat and yanking him off of Syber.

Syber pulled himself up and backed away from Wicket, who in turn tossed the enemy soldier to the ground. Cordak paused in her fight with Geist and called to her companion, "Retreat! Their leader can't be far behind!" before she scampered back the way she came.

"COWARDS!" Wicket screeched, delivering a powerful kick to the silvery soldier's spine. Wicket then turned towards Syber and said, "Well what are you waiting for! Finish him!"

"What?!" Syber exclaimed.

"Never mind. You're as thick as a boulder. I'll do it. You just...stay out of my way." Wicket replied as he began pounding in the silver one's head.

"What about Razr?" Syber asked.

"Geist can handle her once we clean up this mess." Butch's voice boomed from behind them.
