Eight
Dickie was sitting in the interrogation room tapping his leg as Elliot walked in with Liv. Cragen tried to talk Elliot out of talking with his son, but Elliot needed to. He felt like a failure. Taking one look at the two, Dickie scoffed and ignored them.
"Dickie, why'd you do it?" Elliot asked softly. He wasn't mad, he was confused. He thought Kathy and he had raised the kids right.
Dickie ignored his father and continued to stare at a spot on the table, tapping his leg. Elliot took a deep breath and let it out. Liv had told him to do that when he got too angry. It worked out most of the time. "Dickie, you attacked Rachel Harvel's boyfriend, Tyler Stout. Why?" Liv asked, going to sit on the table next to him.
He scooted away from her, still refusing to talk. "Dickie if you don't talk then we can't settle this. You will go to jail. Do you want that?" Elliot asked in a louder voice.
"Why do you care? You got a new son, new whore, you dont't need us anymore," he said with a small angry voice.
Elliot was taken aback. "Do NOT call Liv a whore again," he said harshly.
"Or what? Disown me? Go ahead. That little bastard can replace me just like she," he shoved his head towards Liv, "replaced mom."
"Liv has not replaced your mother and Ethan has not replaced you. I love all of you kids equally."
Elliot's temper was getting to him. The breathing wasn't working anymore. Dickie always knew how to make his blood boil.
"Don't give me that bullshit, dad. You stopped coming home long before the first separation. Then you and her are out on a breakfast date and wont come home." Dickie sighed angrily.
"I didn't come home because I was not going to be accused of something by my wife and son that I didn't do. Also, it wasn't a breakfast date, Dickie, it was simply breakfast. Frank the vendor knows us for our coffee and breakfast orders. That's our vendor we go to on early mornings. He gave us that stuff on the house, not that you need to know any of this since it isn't your business," Elliot said as he got up to pace.
Liv watched him pace.
"Dickie, before this separation, we didn't do anything. I've had your father's back for 13 years, I helped deliver Eli. I tried my hardest to keep your parents together. Even through my feelings for your father." Liv stated. Dickie looked at Liv with an angry snarl.
"You didn't even have the right to have those feelings." Dickie looked away after he said that.
Liv sighed. She was getting no where with him. "I felt the same way for her. I've had feeling for her for years, but I loved your mother too. I didn't want to break up the family, Dickie. But sometimes people fall out of love." Elliot said in a small voice. "I can't tell you, how many times I wanted to not have feelings for Liv. Knowing it would be easier, but as much as I tried to not have feelings, I couldn't stop them from coming."
"Then why did you cheat with that chick?" Dickie asked in a tiny voice, tears slipping.
Elliot looked at his oldest son with a heart breaking. Sighing, he went to sit on the table on the other side of Dickie. "Dickie I just got finished with a case where a man was having sex with 7 year old girls. I went to have a drink that turned out to be more than one. Rachel was there and bought me a couple. I was drunk and by the next morning, I forgot about her. Until that day I found out about Ethan being my son, I didn't even know I cheated."
Dickie was silent for a while. "Mom and I would have rather it be with Olivia than a random girl. At least we would have understood better."
Liv and Elliot exchanged glances. "Dickie, why did you attack Tyler Stout?" Liv asked.
Sighing, Dickie looked at Liv. "Tyler was a friend of Maureen's from school. They hooked up once or twice," Elliot tensed up, but didn't say anything as Dickie continued. "Tyler mentioned to Maureen one night about this chick that he'd seen getting screwed on the street. Said it looked like dad. She kicked him out, not wanting to believe it. A few days after that, Tyler went back to Maureen and said that the chick was pregnant and it wasn't his. Tyler and Rachel had been hooking up seriously, but not exclusive at that point. Maureen and Tyler were an item up until Rachel's murder. She tried to leave Tyler, but he said if she did leave, Maureen would end up like Rachel."
Elliot stood and started pacing, trying to regain some composure. That ass was threatening his daughter. He had to kill the boy. "El, calm down." Liv stated, without looking at him. She knew him so well. He swallowed a heavy lump and breathed, calming his heart rate.
"So you did what you did to defend your sister?" Liv asked. Dickie nodded.
"I was so angry with you and dad that I didn't know how bad I had beaten him. Only that it felt good." Dickie confessed. "I'm sorry, dad."
Elliot pulled his son into a hug. "I'm sorry too, Dickie."
Cragen sent Munch and Fin to talk to Maureen while Liv and Elliot went to collect Tyler for a blood test. Cragen was looking after Ethan at the precinct. Tyler was a runner, of course. After two blocks of dodging, Elliot and Liv cornered him. Panting, Elliot had read him his Miranda rights and shoved him in the back of their car.
"What an ass," Elliot stated as he dropped him off at cental booking for arraignment. They had more than enough evidence to convict Tyler of rape and murder of Rachel Harvel. Liv patted him on the back. "You did good keeping your temper, El."
"Dad." Dickie was standing beside Elliot's desk, watching Ethan. A deal was made for community service and six months parole for his cooperation. Elliot smiled.
"Hey, Dickie," he greeted. Ethan smiled and waved his arms around in greeting. "He there little man, how are you getting on with your brother?"
Dickie looked at Ethan awkwardly. Liv saw the guilty look on the kids face. "What's wrong, Dickie?"
He glanced at Liv then at his father who had stood up. "I'm sorry for everything. Ethan's innocent in all of this. I also realize that you and mom weren't in love for a long time. I'm lucky to have Eli as a brother."
Elliot pulled him into another hug. "I'll always be here for you," Elliot whispered to Dickie.
