41-Dreams and Night Horses

Locket flew into Peep's room. He was mumbling in his sleep. She flew near his head and sat in an imaginary chair then propped her head up with her hands and watched him.

Peep sang, "Nobody's perfect... It's the best of both worlds..." Then he giggled, "Miley, you are so funny..."

Locket burst out laughing! As he continued numbing "Miley, Miley..." she became jealous and rainbow glitter rained down onto Peep's chest.

Peep sat up quickly and yelled, "Miley is that you?"

Locket blushed. She'd never seen Peep without a shirt before. She covered her eyes and asked, "Where are your night things?"

Peep noticed Locket. "Oh Locket it's you... I thought..."

Locket caught a glimpse of the giant heart tattoo covering Peep's chest. It looked as if a child had drawn it and underneath it was the word LOVE in crudely tattooed capital letters.

Locket panicked. In an act of momentary jealously she'd let her magic get away from her. Would she ever learn to control it properly? She didn't want Peep to notice the tattoo. Still covering her eyes she asked, "Peep please put on your night things!"

Peep grabbed an oversized white Tee from the floor and threw it on. "Do you mean my pajamas? It gets hot up here at night. Sometimes I sleep in just my boxers."

Locket held up her tiny blue hand and said, "TMIS!"

Peep looked confused, "TMIS?"

Locket replied, "TMIS? Too much information sir. Where do you live under a rock?"

Peep thought it was too early to play games. He hated to admit he missed being on the set of Hannah Montana even if it was only a dream.

Locket turned away while Peep pulled on some baggy jeans. "So what were you dreaming about?"

Peep lied, "Uh... nothing... I don't remember..."

Locket pleaded, "Awwwww.... Come on! I heard you singing in your sleep."

Peep said, "I was not singing."

Locket teased, "Nobody's perfect!"

Peep signed, "Fine! I dreamed I was on the set of Hannah Montana, only it wasn't a TV show—they were real people!"

Locket prodded, "And...?"

Peep grimaced. "And nothing. It was just a stupid dream."

Locket sat on the edge of Peep's bed and pet Hello the cat who purred like a motor boat. Hello licked Locket up the face with her large prickly pink tongue. Locket flew in front of Peep's face and sat cross cross applesauce in mid air. "Are dreams the same for humans as they are for fairies?"

Peep curiously asked, "What do you mean?"

Locket explained, "For fairies even the craziest of dreams can feel more real than the mundanest of real days!"

Peep tilted his head thinking about the question. "I think that's true for humans as well. I once dreamed I could fly. I was flying everywhere but no one could see me. I flew over our house then above The Sunrise Mall. After flew over the playground at my school... When I woke up I was very disappointed to learn it was only a dream."

Locket's blue eyes grew bluer and wider. "Wow..."

Peep loved talking about dreams. Secretly they fascinated him. "Then there's the scary dreams..." Peep shuddered. "Onetime a faceless man was chasing me. My legs felt like hardened cement and no matter how hard I tried to scream for help—I couldn't! It was as if my lips were sewn shut!"

Locket looked confused. She'd never experienced an unhappy dream. "Your dream sounds terrifying. Why would you ever want to go there?"

Peep looked perplexed. "I didn't wanna go there. It's just a nightmare. They happen sometimes. Don't fairies have nightmares?"

Not understanding Locket replied, "Why would a fairy ever have a night horse?"

Peep stood up and began pacing. He did this whenever someone got on his nerves or he had excess energy. "Not a night horse! A nightmare! It's a scary dream. And humans do not have control over their dreams. I wish!"

A slight smile lit up Locket's face. She asked, "You wish?" She took it as a challenge.

Peep objected, "No Locket I do NOT wish! Please don't mess with my dreams."

Locket sulked."Sometimes you're no fun at all!"

Peep thought of a compromise. "It would be fun to fly though."

Locket clapped her tiny blue hands together. "Would it now?"

Peep answered, "Sure, who doesn't want to fly?"

Locket began rattling off, "Trolls, kittens, my great great grandfather on papa's side. Such a fearful old man! Lambs, most poodles, worms..."

"Wait!" Peep held up his hand in protest. "It was a rhetorical question. I didn't want a list."

"Well if you don't like the answer don't ask the question!" Annoyed Locket said, "I know when I've been insulted!"

Peep began laughing. "You sound just like ol' Lucy from the Peanuts' cartoon.

Locket narrowed her eyes. "You'd better be careful or I'll give you a large Snoopy tattoo right in the middle of your forehead."

Peep narrowed his eyes and got nose to nose with Locket. "You wouldn't dare!"

Locket shot up into the air. "Are you seriously daring a fairy?"

Peep protested. "Locket why can't we have a normal conversation. Kid to kid?"

Locket floated back down. "Firstly, I'm not a goat and neither are you. Secondly, do you really want a second tattoo today?"

Peep gasped. "A second tattoo?! He ripped off his tee shirt and ran to the mirror above his dresser. Seeing the giant heart with the word LOVE underneath it he exclaimed, "So that's why you wanted me to put on my night things!" Peep whined, "Locket whyyyyyy???"

"It was an accident. I'm not sure how it happened. You were moaning in your sleep about Miley and--"

"--you got jealous? You got jealous and you gave me this child-like love tattoo?"

Locket sat on the dresser and swung her little blue legs. "I didn't mean to..."

Peep pulled his shirt back on and said, "Locket you need to get ahold of yourself. It was only a dream."

Locket's blue lower lip quivered. "But dreams really do come true."

Peep held out his hand and Locket stepped on. "It's not the same for us humans. Sometimes a dream is just a dream. I once had a dream I dated Anabel the Terrible from the 3rd grade. It was a nightmare. She tried to change me. She had me wearing sweater vests and playing Polo."

Locket missed the point. "I think sweater vests are charming!" Ooh I saw one with a giant daisy on it. You'd look marvelous."

Peep sighed. "No thank you..." Suddenly Peep was wearing a light blue golf sweater vest with a giant embroidered yellow and white daisy on the front.

Locket exclaimed, "Adorable!"

Peep pulled off the sweater. "Locket if we're gonna be friends... Please don't try and change me."

Locket pondered this. She needed to learn how to be human. If only there was a spell?
