Melody Of You

The sun beamed down on the pavement as Prince checked the ball to Brooks. "And after trying to let her in and show her that I care.. then she tells me to leave her alone for a while..."

Brooks squinted, genuinely intrigued but not surprised since Prince has been babbling to him about their relationship since the day Prince met her. "Hm and why is that?"

"I don't even know this time. I get in trouble over the simplest of things with her. She overreacts to everything. Honestly, I've had it with her, she throws tantrums and then plays victim when I get mad."

"Well maybe she's playing victim because she is a victim."

Prince rolled his eyes. "Oh please, you're over exaggerating." Granted she's been through a lot but so has he and he's yet to see himself as a victim.

"Or.." Brooks pause to try and shake Prince but he couldn't, he could never understand how Prince could play in heels. "... maybe you haven't owned up to your mistakes."

Prince was stunned. "How in the hell have I not owned up to my mistakes?"

"The girl..." Brooks took advantage of his vulnerable state and drove past him for a layup. "the girl was a sweetheart when you first met her am I correct?"

He rolled his eyes, half mad at the fact that he scored and half mad at the fact he called her a sweetheart. "Hardly, she hated me for the longest." Not to mention she was with Michael who ruined her sweet disposition every second.

"You knocked her down the stairs."

He gasped. "Why does she keep telling everybody that!?"

Brooks checked the ball back to Prince and got into a defensive position "You told me that."

Prince squinted. "Hmph...are you sure that was my word choice?"

"I believe your exact words were...'i'm pretty sure I paralyzed her from the waist down'."

He laughed, finally remembering there conversation at soundcheck. "That is something I would say isn't it.....well anyway," Prince drove to the basketball, stopping abruptly, causing Brooks to fly past him onto the concrete. "She's always reminds me of my mistakes...everyday. Every. Single. argument."

"Why am I being beaten by a grown man in heels?"

Prince scrunched his face up at him before swishing his shoot. "Step yo' game up bitch."

Brooks glared at him as Prince lent him a helping hand, he exhaled brushing the dust off the back of his pants. "And wouldn't it hurt you too knowing that someone you loved looked you in your eyes everyday and straight up lied to you."

Prince froze, his gaze shifting to the side.

"I mean think about it...she was in a horrible relationship before, couldn't trust him, she met you, thought you were different... then that whole thing happened with the engagement, lost trust in you. Where would that actually put a women's mind? Where would that put her mind?"

Brooks was someone he confided into about Jasmyn's battle with her mental disorder, Prince was never one to tell another's business but he didn't know how to help her. Brooks was always there for him.

"Don't make me feel bad again." Prince mumbled, tossing the ball back to him. "I told her I was sorry."

"Sorry?" Brooks chuckled. "Sorry doesn't even begin to fix what you destroyed, saying sorry doesn't fix anything, saying sorry doesn't fix a broken heart-"

"Alright Brooks that's enough-"

"I'm telling you Prince, just like I used to tell you back in the day, before you hurt her, you have to realize that if you want her back you have to be willing to pick up all the broken pieces and accept the fact that no matter what you do to fix her, she'll never be the same again."

Prince went silent, feeling a lump in his throat. That hit him like a train, he could almost cry.

Brooks exhaled. "I have a daughter now and for a boy to make a girl sit and wonder why she isn't good enough or what's wrong with her is soul shattering."

"Let me go call her."

You stroke the keys to the purple piano

And it unlocks my heart of black and white affliction

It's harsh tones shatter silence with unmatched intensity, much like the glass concealers over my eyes.

But your switch to softer notes kisses my fragile skin like a delicate feather.

Tracing over my goosebumps with the art of honest seduction.

I shudder once more as the unraveling sounds are effortlessly and lovingly innocent.

Your eyes stay lost in mine as your musicianship in playing is unforgivably fierce.

Your voice is silky velvet and I can't help but melt in your embrace of song.

If only i could stay in this compelling trance that is your lavish soul.

Can you hear me?

I gasped, screaming to the top of my lungs. "Bitch I knew it!"

Liliana covered her face with her hands trying to hide her embarrassment. "Is it that obvious?"

"For the love of Christ lil, you might as well write 'insert penis here' under your nose."

She quickly shot her hand under over her mouth, her eyes getting as wide as saucers.

"If you cover it up he's just gonna stick it somewhere else...and not where you think."

Her jaw dropped.

I howled, taking off to the bathroom in midst of my cackling fit. I swear I make myself laugher harder than anyone i've ever met. I just wish my bladder could keep up.

I returned to the livingroom, having finally semi pulled myself together. "But girl it's okay that you have a crush on him, all my friends do..." I paused correcting myself. "Hannah doesn't..but everyone else does." I shrugged, pulled my legs up to my chest in the fluffy chair. "It's actually normal, I'd find it weirder if you didn't."

"I mean i'm not gonna act on it-"

I waved my hand dismissively. "Don't stress, you don't even have to explain to him."

She pushed a piece of her hair behind her ear. "Ok..."

I turned my attention back to the TV. Dynasty was my favorite show as of lately, now it's kinda of hard to watch it without Prince's falsetto coming into my mind.

"What's you're favorite memory with Prince?"

I chuckled, one moment immediately coming to mind. "Well..." I snickered. "I wouldn't say this is my favorite but, it was an interesting one...It was back in 1984..."

I was home alone and I had just came out the shower with a towel wrapped around my waist, drying my hair with another towel. I was headed towards the livingroom, it was my routine at the time to watch TV naked on an off day. Don't judge me, it was how I relaxed.

I pulled the towel from my face and screamed bloody murder at the sight of Prince on my couch. I dropped the towel for a second and quickly snatched the knit blanket off the arm of the sofa he made himself comfortable on.

"What the actual fuck?! You can't just barge in here, how did you even get in my house?"

Prince smirked, recrossing his legs. "Wanna know something?"

I squinted. "What? NO!" I groaned to the sky. "You have no respect for anybody's privacy! You inconsiderate little shit!"

He rolled his eyes, making a talking gesture with his hand. I blew, trying to pull myself together.

"I know you're mad at me right now but that's a relatively open weave and I can still see your..." he snickered. "Nipular areas."

I shrieked, storming off back up the stairs.

"That sounds like something he would do."

"Yeah.." I nodded, kind of in a daze by that memory. "You can look at him and tell he'd just kind of break into your house and stare at your nipples."

She bursted into laughter at that.

He never slept during those days—he couldn't sleep. I would wake up alone. Yet, he'd always call me asking me to come over so he could sleep. Where'd he go? His housekeeper would say, "He's in the studio." or he would leave the sweetest little notes on the stairs that would say: Had to work! Couldn't sleep. Come see me. He was touring at the time so it's not like he was free anyway.

I pulled the blanket over my legs, starting to get lost in my memories. "I remember this one time I took him to the bike store and I bought him a bike because he said he wanted a bicycle. That was his thing, he liked to roller-skate and he liked to bike and was oddly good at it." I honestly believe Prince could compete in biking, not only was he quick on the bike but he was nimble. "Anyway, I got him all sized up for it, and then I told him, Okay, Prince, I'm only buying this bike if you get a helmet and he said" I dropped my voice, mimicking Prince's. "I don't want a helmet." I said, "Well, I'm not buying this bike, if you don't get a helmet. You have to ride with a helmet or else I can't be responsible for you being on this bike."

I can see the biggest smile spreading across Liliana's face. I can't believe she's actually finding some joy in my stupid memories with Prince.

"He says, "Well, I don't want a helmet." I said, "I'll get you a cool one and I'll get one, too." So we got the helmets, but I found out later that he was riding the bike and he didn't wear it." I shrugged, chuckling. "So yeah, money wasted."

I went on and on and on with my Prince stories, just small dumb tidbits of my life with him so far. And in all my talking i'm slowly realizing that I'd never met anyone like him before. Not at all. It was just his confidence. And he was really shy, too, so there was this childlike thing that went with it. He totally threw me off, because he didn't do what every other guy did like, come to your house at the right time and pick you up, bring you your favorite chips at 2 in the morning because you were complaining about how hungry you were on the phone. Prince would throw rocks at your window while you were sleeping. He did things that were almost like something from a fairy tale.

Prince actually told me this story about how he saw me at a club when I was 16, I had to thoroughly explain to him how I got in there in the first place. Being a teen pop sensation comes with it's perks, legal or not. Anyway, Prince said he saw me and he tapped me on the shoulder, and he says, "Hi...I would like for you to do a song with me." And he said I kind of blushed, and I vividly remember that night I just don't remember him but what I do remember is before I could pull my head up he disappeared. You know, he disappears really quickly, even now. I also remember that he came back and asked me again, because I, at first, remembered that deep ass voice, and this time I said, "Wait a minute, don't leave before I answer you." And I remembered those hazel eyes and I told him: "Yes." And then he walked away, but I never saw him again. That's how he is, he was always real slick with the mystery.

I still haven't figure him out.

Interjecting my thoughts I heard the front door open and two figures ran at me full throttle, tackling me, sending the chair crashing to the ground. I quickly realized that it was Naomi and Gigi, tears immediately flooded to my eyes and I hugged them back as tight as I could. I missed these dumb hoes so damn much.

Hannah stood over us almost motherly. "I was gonna say I have a surprise for you, but nevermind."

Naomi pulled back, gasping. "Bitch, I slept with him."

My eyes went wide, a little shocked at the fact that that was the first thing to come out her mouth, also shocked at the fact that she actually did it. "So he's three for four?"

"Four for four biiiih." Gigi piped up.

We all screamed, Liliana on the other hand was highly confused and slightly terrified at everything taking place in the room.

Naomi squealed. "We're Eskimo sisters!"

Gigi shrieked. "Let's choose another guy!"

Naomi gasped in realization. "Let's do Prince!"

My hand immediately clasped around her throat. "Wait a minute now."

She wheezed for air, lifting a fast food bag into my view. "But...we got....you...fries."

I squealed, releasing her throat and ripping the bag from her hand. "Thanks girl!" I peered in, my face immediately dropped at the sight. "I think the McFuck not."

Naomi furrowed her brows. "What?"

I pulled out the lone barbecue sauce. "I should run in McDonalds and throw a grenade behind the counter. What the hell i'm gon' do with one damn sauce with two large fries?" I tossed it back into the bag. "I rebuke this in the name of Jesus."

Hannah cleared her throat. "While y'all sitting there arguing over condiments, Prince's release party is tonight and bitch I wanna go"

I turned my top lip up. "Bitch you don't even like Prince."

Gigi scrunched her face up. "I know that much."

"Ok and? That don't change the fact that Mighty Mouse can set it off in a disco. You know how many fine, rich, eligible men, are gonna be there?"

Gigi shrugged. "Now she ain't lying."

I popped a fry in my mouth, contemplating it. I did sort of miss the guy since I started talking about him to Liliana. Maybe if I showed up in a little freakum dress, we could fuck in the closet and solve our problems. That's how we always solved our problems.

Naomi clutched her hands together in hope. "So?"

I rolled my eyes, trying not to smile. "Fine."

In midst of all their celebrational screams, my eyes landed on Liliana who looked more than uncomfortable.

"Get Lil', what are you gonna do tonight?"

"Well," she shrugged. "I don't know, what I always do I guess. I'm gonna write some poetry by myself and then i'll probably just sit in my room and listen to some records... by myself, watch some TV until I fall sleep.

"Well..." Naomi started. "It might be a crazy night, but you're more than welcome to join us."

Hannah twisted her face. "What."

I punched her in the shoulder. "That's so sweet Naomi."

"Yeah, come." Gigi placed a friendly hand on her shoulder.

She looked around the room, taking in all the wanting looks. Honestly I think it would be good for Liliana to get out and make some memories.

"Fine, I'll do it! I do not wanna be alone in my room in L.A"

"Okay, well if you're gonna join the hoe party, I have one cardinal rule. You must dress up.

Naomi twisted her face in disgust, peering over her less than glamorous outfit. "Yeah."

"Yeah, because we have to be able to get into the club. So you're gonna have to pull it together a little bit." Hannah sassed.

"But I don't dress up."

"Bitch you gon' learn today, ladies?" Hannah clapped, summoning our attention. "I'm thinkin' a cute little dress and some shoes, some heels preferably."

Naomi titled her head to the side. "I'm thinking mulberry or plum."

"Plum, her hair is pretty dark." Gigi interjected. "Tease the hair, set it in some rollers and get some curls poppin'."

"Yeah, keep it down and we can do spagetti straps" Naomi gasped in excitement. "A short sequin dress."

Hannah clapped in excitement, she loved giving people makeovers. It was her thrill in life, it gave her a sense of control in a world full of chaos, atleast that's what she tells me.

I hopped up off the group. "You ready?"

Liliana gulped. "I guess so..."

About three hours, a bazillion glasses of white wine and a major glam session later. Liliana was looking like new money in my Givenchy dress. I have so many dresses that I don't wear, which is terrible because I have a shopping problem but I hate leaving the house unless my friends force me to.

"Alright.." Gigi closed her favorite glitter eyeshadow palette. "Who's next."

Naomi and I raised our hands simultaneously.

__________

Cat Glover, David Bowie, Constance Marie ,and Prince are standing against the wall laughing their heads off.

"Yeah, that's my girl" Prince said, referring to Cat

Bowie snickered. "No, that's my girl."

"Well, I had her first"

"No, she was supposed to be with me first!"

David grabbed Cat and Constance's hand. "Well now I have them both."

He swept them both out on the floor before Prince could even get a comeback out. He just shook his head, tickled at David's sense of humor. The song quickly changed from Forever In My Life to U Got The Look and Prince's heart immediately felt heavy. For some odd reason, this huge surge of guilt hit him the minute Jasmyn's voice started singing the chorus. His feelings polarized with the dance floor which had started to heat up with the funky tune.

His gaze wandered around the room, he had invited a ton of women from his past and it was interesting to see them all in one place. Everyone one from longtime girlfriends like Kim Upsher and Sue Ann Carwell, to what Jasmyn liked to call long range booty calls like Sheena Easton and Jackie Swanson. He hadn't talked to any of them much tonight. Granted he's gotten some dirty looks from some of them. Also granted that some interactions ended better than others.

"Hey stranger."

He jolted slightly glancing to the side to see a wide smiling Sheila.

"Oh...hey."

"You know what i've noticed about you? You're always in clubs and you don't drink, you don't dance, you don't do anything, you just sit in the corner."

"I like to people watch."

Sheila snickered. "Why don't you just go people watch on a park bench?"

He glared at her before turning his gaze back to the dance floor. "No."

Sheila frowned. "What's wrong with you?"

"Nothing."

"Psh." she scoffed. "I've known you for almost ten year, I think I can tell when you're emotionally unstable."

"Nah," he chuckled. "Me and Jas are just going through some things."

"Seems like you're always going through some things with her."

Prince shrugged. "Call it routine."

Sheila huffed. "It's unhealthy."

"Well it's my fault."

Those words almost brought him to tears, he was so mad at the fact that he talked to Brooks. He's been a wreck ever since he was hit the ton of bricks known as reality over what was supposed to be a friendly game of pick up.

"It's your fault that you stay in that situation. You shouldn't be neglecting your own emotional needs because of someone else."

Prince was offended. "That's literally the definition of what a real relationship is, try single men over married ones, your life might turn out better."

Sheila gasped, shocked that he would even bring that up. "Maybe you should try women your own age instead of teenage girls."

"Well seeing as I didn't have an entire wife at the time."

"Almost did."

Prince closed his eyes, that one hurt. It really did.

Sheila exhaled. "I'm sorry."

"You aren't, you needed to say that." They've had a rocky relationship for years, on and off again. Everyone thought they would be perfect together but no matter how hard they tried it never worked. He understood her frustration, someone you once had is with everyone else. She doesn't even date which is the killing part.

"Did you ever love me?... even a little bit."

"I did...I'll always have love for you, you're one of my favorite girls."

She shook her head in disgust. "I'll always be that, one of them."

He groaned internally, she does this everytime they get alone together. "I don't know what you want from me."

"I don't want anything from you." she turned to face him. "Prince, I want you."

Prince creased his brows, confused as to why she had taken a firm grip on his collar.

______________________

"I can't believe we are at Prince's release party!" Liliana laughs excitedly before once again tripping in her heels. "I have to pee so bad!"

Hannah scoffed. "Yeah girl that's the problem"

I scanned the room, looking for some familiar faces. "This is so awesome! Hollywood guys are so cute!"

Naomi slapped my shoulder. "Hey, you've got a boyfriend!"

"I know. But if some guy who looks like Johnny Depp wants to kiss me tonight, I'm sooo gonna let them."

"Girl you and i both know yo' man is too fine"

My voice went high. "I know bih!"

As we were trying to make our way to the dance floor my eyes landed on Bowie, dancing with Cat and some other chick i've never seen. I walked towards him, and tried to look as un-interested in him as possible, checking out my nails for good measure.

"Hey, how's it goin'?"

"Hello love."

I melted immediately.

"How are you doing?"

I nodded. "Bitchin'"

"Hello ladies."

They all waved knowingly. "Hi David"

We all saw his eyes drift away from us and towards Liliana, we all gave knowing smirks. Victim #5.

He grabbed her hand kissing the back of it. "Hello love."

She giggled. "Hi..."

"It's a little loud in here, would you like to come back to my limo where it's a little quieter."

She nodded eagerly and before we knew it she was off. We all watched them walk off.

"I swear it's the accent..." I piped up.

Hannah dapped me up. "Girl I swear."

I shook my head, pulling myself from my trance. "Let me go find my man, y'all go play and be nice."

Naomi squealed. "No promises."

Gigi whipped out her compact. "Let'me go find Andre, I know his fine ass here."

Hannah took a glass off a waiters tray as she walked by. "I'm about to go find me some dick."

I shook my head at the foolishness that it my friend group and wandered off to find my boo so we can kiss and go ride bikes.

I wandered around, when finally the smell of straight up lavender hit my nose.

"That's Prince." I whispered to myself, following the scent all the way to the wall and when I finally broke through the end of the crowd. I screamed, my hand immediately shooting to my mouth after. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Prince's eyes were as wide as saucers, he pushed her off. He watched with his hands out trying to gauge the severity of the situation as my lip started to quiver, my breakdown starting in front of his very eyes. "Jasmyn...baby....please let me explain....it's not what it looks like ok...Princess?"

My tears immediately started to stream down my hand when he said that. I wanted to leave, I didn't want to cry in front of him but my body was paralyzed. I was numb. I felt him wrap his arms around my waist, trying to place consoling kisses on my forehead. But that gave me a sudden burst of anger.

I finally gained the strength and to turn on my heels and take off but before I could, he caught me causing my feet to fly into the air and one of my heels to fly onto the dance floor

"I'm so sorry baby, please please let me explain."

"I can't believe I ever trusted you! You slimy sneaky son of a bit--" my ranting was muffled by his delicate hand cupping over my mouth, my tears soaking his fingers.

I bit down on his hand with all the force I could and when he cursed in pain letting me go. I took off, with no intention of coming back.
