Intro:

It was just another reaping day. The only difference was this time, I wasn't going. All of my life I have done what the Capitol has told me to do. I have been present at reapings and announcements since I could walk. But today would be different. It was my last reaping, and for once in my life I was going to do what I wanted to do, not what the Capitol told me to do. Of course Granna didn't agree with what I was planning to do. "You'll get caught!" She warned. "They'll punish you severely." But I felt like it was a risk worth taking. I would be the first out of everyone I knew to refuse to show up. I felt like taking that stand.

I leave the house the same time Granna does. She is going to the reaping, and I to the fields. No one will be working, and I will be able to enjoy the quiet serenity. I never even considered the fact that I might be reaped. I mean, I had been in the drawing my whole life and never made it. Why should this year be any different?

Because it's the Capitol. That's why.

I'm lying in the center of the field when I hear someone shouting my name. It was my life long best friend Drew. "Asher!" He ran up to me and stopped with his hands on his knees to catch his breath. "You gotta get up there man," he panted.

"Why?" I hear my husky voice answer. I knew why.

Without even answering me, he shoved me forward and we began running. I couldn't even feel my legs moving. I couldn't see where I was going. I had completely zoned out. When we reached the square, I felt thousands of pairs of eyes turn towards me. I was pretty sure that I was the first tribute in history to not be present when called. Everyone was shocked into silence. I slowly moved forward through the crowd and took my place on stage. Clearly the announcer was stunned to silence too, because it took him a few moments of staring at me to remember his job.

"Asher Brix?" I hear his appalled voice ask.

"Yes?" I answer gruffly, glaring at him.

He still appeared completely taken aback, and I was shocked when he began shaking my hand as if to congratulate me. "Welcome to the Seventieth Hunger Games."

Only then did I hear the commotion in the crowd. I could see a small woman trying to make her way to the platform, but she was stopped by two Peacemakers. I felt my heart sink to the pit of my stomach.

Granna.

I was ushered into the City Hall. A few minutes later, Granna was let in. She wrapped her hands around my face and I stared deep into her eyes. Not a single tear was present. She was a strong woman. But was she strong enough to make it on her own?

"I'll win it for you," I heard myself say. "I'll be back to take care of you."

She just nodded with a small smile on her face. And then I give her what very well may be, a last hug.
