Chapter twenty-two
After all the vines cleared his body, we quickly grabbed him by his feet and dragged him to a safe spot. We've been sitting in a tight circle around Anthos ever since, waiting for him to regain consciousness, checking on him every two or three minutes. Adenias is a little further, playing with rocks and small sticks, completely lost in his thoughts. He hasn't said a word since his fight with Cedar earlier. I'm pretty sure he's angry at his partner for not trusting him. They seem to share a special bond, it's almost like they already knew each other before coming here. Of course, it's totally impossible as they are not from the same place and their districts aren't even close to one another. Plus, all communication between districts are forbidden, unless it is for official business and I highly doubt their parents were important enough to communicate. It must be related to their uncles that were allies and fought together many years ago, it may be their way of honoring their fallen family members. The odds of them being in the same Games were incredibly low, it was almost an impossible thing. But yet, here we are.
The odds are never in your favor.
Unlike him, Cedar doesn't stop talking. He and Viviana are discussing their own districts and the lives they know they will never get back to. I quickly join Adenias' silence, listening to their conversation from a distance. It's weird to hear about my home from another perspective, but in a way, it's comforting. It makes me feel less alone.
Twenty minutes after the vines incident, Anthos finally opens his eyes. It takes another full ten minutes before he can answer some of our questions correctly and a little more time until he can sit without feeling like throwing up. I'm pretty sure he has a slight concussion, but that's better than being dead, right? I'm even surprised he doesn't suffer a worse injury after being knocked out this way.
"You guys should go ahead. I'm clearly not going to be able to keep up with you. I'll spend the night here and I'll catch up tomorrow. Just leave me with a sleeping bag and I'll be fine." says Anthos, clearly still dizzy.
"No way, we're not letting anyone behind until we don't have the choice anymore. We're all going to spend the night here. We should settle and get ready for the possibility that the Careers may hunt while it's dark." I reply instantly.
No one complains, but I can see in their eyes that they're not sure if it's the right decision. Viviana and Cedar go back to their discussion, but after a while, I realize they changed the subject and are now talking about food in an attempt to include Anthos.
"What are you doing?" asks Cedar, suspicious of Adenias' true intentions.
I turn around and realize that he is standing on his feet, a bag on his shoulder and a knife in his hands. He's about to leave. Everyone is looking at him, waiting for an answer.
"I'm just going to get some food. Calm down." he says in an arrogant way.
I realize that he and Cedar are having a silent fight, just like the first time we met. However, this time it's not over our presence here and a potential alliance, it's about theirs and the fact that it's never going to be the same.
"I'm coming with you."
I get up and walk to his side, sustaining Viviana's confused look. I try to move my toes in my boots to make the numbness in my legs go away, but it only makes it worse. I was getting bored and sitting on the ground waiting for time to go by is not something I usually like to do. Deciding to go with him was a spontaneous decision, but it can't be as boring as staying here.
"We'll be back soon. I'm gonna take the dagger and we're going to let you with the other knife and the swords. If we're not there tomorrow morning, don't wait for us."
Without another word, I start walking towards where I think the Cornucopia is. I'm not sure if it's the right call or not, but I guess I'll know it pretty soon. From what I've seen during the previous Games, they try to put all the good food and the water close to the Cornucopia to ensure some fights. Once we're far enough from the others so that they can't see us, he stops and turns around to face me.
"You didn't have to come; I can hunt on my own."
"Never said you couldn't. We're a team and even if you don't like it, we have to work together."
"A team? We're not a team. Only one of us is getting out of here alive and you don't go home by making friends."
"Did you hear me talk about making friends? I said that we're a team and that's will stay true until there is only us left. If you don't agree with me, why did you save Anthos then?"
"Well I didn't know that I'd lose the only person I trusted doing it."
"So that's what all of this is about. You don't get to be mad at anyone. We all thought you were trying to kill him because he was making too much noise. Maybe you should've said something before hitting Anthos like this. What's the deal between you and Cedar anyway?"
"That's none of your business."
"Fine, don't tell me, I don't care. If you want to leave and get killed, just do it, I don't care about that either!"
I walk past Adenias, putting an end to the discussion. I may have been a little harsh with him and I start to regret my last words. To be honest, I don't want him to leave. I may not like his attitude, but we need him. He's smart and that could really be useful. Anthos wouldn't be here if Adenias wasn't with us. I turn around and take a look at him. He hasn't moved, he's still standing where I left him, looking at his surroundings. After a while, he turns around and his eyes meet mine. It's hard to read his face from where I'm standing, but I'm pretty sure he's hesitant. Then he looks down and starts walking in my direction.
"Let's go hunt." he says, walking past me.
