Chapter forty-one
When I wake up, the air is already hotter and my body have stopped shaking for a while now. I must have fell asleep without realizing it. At least, I was able to figure out a plan before I lost track of reality. I look up to the trees, where birds are chirping far from the human eye. I sit up and rest my back against the big sturdy rock behind me. At some point in the night I decided to do an inventory of what I have left, so all of my things are spread on the ground in front of me. I start putting everything back into the bag. I carefully wrap the net I made from the vines in the sleeping bag; it's going to play a major part in my plan. I open my water bottle and shake it above my dry mouth, but nothing comes out. I angrily throw it on the ground; I don't need any extra weight slowing me down. The tokens of the fallen tributes are still safely sitting at the bottom of the bag in their own bottle. I debate for a while if I should keep the vine knife that Mags sent me or if I should throw it out, but finally decide that it could be useful later so I place it back into my bag. I tie my facemask around the handle of the bag with a tight knot. I don't know why I want to keep it; I doubt anyone will have to spend another night here. Satisfied by my now lighter backpack, I grab my trident and get up, ready to leave. The metal from which it is made is cold and makes me shiver as soon as I touch it.
From where I am, I can see that the Careers are still lying around the fire pit. It's perfect; it's going to give me more time to execute my plan. If nothing goes wrong, at least two of them should be dead soon. I had plenty of time to observe the pack before falling asleep; I know they guard the fire one after the other, switching each hour or so. When I woke up, I saw the boy from one waking up his district partner which means that I have less than an hour to before the girl from two takes over.
My whole plan is based on the fact that they all seem selfish and that with the end approaching, they won't trust each other like they used to. I will light a big fire using the tricks that Cedar taught us and use plenty of leaves to make sure that there's a lot of smoke. If the girl from two sees it while the other tributes are still asleep, she will definitely start tracking down the person who made it, just in case it's me. If it's one of the two others that see it, they will probably leave on their own, eager to make one more kill. If I'm wrong and all three of them leave together, my plan B will come into action. I will leave an obvious trail that they can easily follow. Since they think that they're stronger than everyone else, they will definitely take the path I created without thinking and they'll fall directly into the deadly trap that I have set. While we were training, Adenias taught us how to make a snare and other bigger traps using the ropes I had made. I can use the net and make it drop on whoever will trigger the trap. No matter how hard they try to get rid of it, the vines will only tighten until that person is dead. I still don't know how I will take out the two remaining Careers, especially if they're together. I guess I'll have to find a way to separate them while I'm executing the first part of my plan. I don't even know how much time I have until they all wake up. It might happen in an hour or even in ten minutes. I have no way to know. I can only hope that they're as lazy as they look and that they are really willing to wait for the remaining tributes to come to the Cornucopia to get water.
Deciding that I shouldn't waste any more of my precious time, I start running away from the Cornucopia in a random direction. Surprisingly, I start recognizing my surroundings pretty fast. It's probably my imagination; every part of a forest looks exactly the same. I shake my head and start running faster. The lack of sleep and the hunger start slowing me down after a little while, but I try to ignore it for as long as I can. After what I think is about 3.5 miles, I stop running. It took me about 40 minutes. I used to be faster, but I'm exhausted from my time in the arena and my ribs still hurt from when I got kicked yesterday. My heart is racing in my chest and I'm having a hard time breathing normally. My mouth is incredibly dry and my throat burns, but I don't have time to feel sorry for myself, I have a job to do. I continue to walk for a while, trying to find the perfect spot for the fire. When I realize that the trees start clearing up, I accelerate. It doesn't take long before I exit the forest into a field of beautiful flowers. I instantly recognize it and finally understand why this part of the arena seemed so familiar. This is the place that haunts my nightmares; this is the place where my allies died. On my right, where the forest meets the field, the trees bear the marks that the mutts left behind: deep cuts made with their sharp claws. I never thought that I'd see this place again, even less using it to kill someone. I guess that this field will see yet another body drop. I try to hold back the tears that dangerously threaten to run down my face at any moment. I can't appear as weak, not now, not while I'm so close to making it. I hear a small sound behind me and quickly turn around, only to find another much appreciated sponsor gift: a full water bottle.
"Thank you for your generosity." I mumble, completely emotionless before drinking half of it.
Iopen my backpack and stuff the water bottle in it. It's time to get to work.
