Chapter 43

Ebony's POV:

I leaped forward, my talons raking down the side of Killer's face. I held in a gasp as I could his jaws snap an inch away from my mangled leg. Soaring through the air, I landed delicately on the wet grass, making sure to hold up my injured ankle.

The sky was getting even darker as the fire grew, ash and embers falling like rain. The hissing, hungry flames grew larger and brighter, and I could feel the heat pressing uncomfortably against my scales. The sound of the fire intensified, and there were low thuds that echoed around often, probably from burnt trees falling.

I gasped for air and ducked away as sharp teeth snapped at my throat. A flash of white startled me, and I heard a loud crack of thunder rumble overhead. The rain was beginning to subside, and I glanced up at Killer.

The large red-stripped hybrid's eyes flashed with murderous intent as he dove towards me. But as I rolled clear from lashing talons and yellow teeth, my ankle touched the grass. I hissed in pain, and Killer lunged forward again.

Killer stomped on the ground, making the earth rumble beneath me like an earthquake. I groaned and wobbled, then fell and thudded on the grass when I lost my balance.

Killer roared and lunged forward once more, like a dog lunging for a piece of steak. I leaped upwards, but his large talons manged his catch my scales, and I saw the black get replaced by a gushing scarlet color.

I somehow tumbled in mid-air, and my talons lashed out, desperately grasping for something to hold on to. My claws clamped on to a patch of tough white scales, and the rough sliding tore them open, drawing blood.

The flashing white of lightning was a bright, white fire when it rippled overhead. Followed after the lightning was a loud, thunderous cry of the sky. With the rain, the snow-white scales beneath me were slicked and I felt myself slipping. My tail lashed and with a desperate attempt, my mangled ankle reached forward, the talons sinking in.

A white hot flare of pain spread through me like snakes of lightning. I opened my jaws to scream with agony, but all that came out was an eerily silent sound, like a suppressed shriek. Killer tried to shake me off, but I held on, my talons gripping the rain-slicked scales.

"Get off of me, parasite!" Killer growled, lashing his tail. His arm reached out like a branch, and his talons extended forward. I moved away quickly, but he still managed to rip my scales.

I clambered down his spine, limping towards his tail. Then I pushed forward, the heavy air pressing against my scales. I jerked away as a burning branch fell a talon-length away from my face. Without warning, a white-and-red flash was near me, and a heavy weight slammed into my side.

I was thrown away from where I was standing, my talons ripping the grass right from the dirt. I flew backwards, my body sliding on the wet grass when I landed. Before Killer reached me, there was a loud groaning sound. I turned my head, seeing that the fire had spread to a large tree with big, snaking branches.

The tree's branches were the antlers of a deer, reaching forward as the tree began to fall, the hungry flames eating the charred bark like maggots on a corpse. Killer roared and slammed his tail into the tree, breaking it and splintering the bark.

I took my chance and got up, then began sprinting towards Feather. "Come on, we can't beat him," I admitted, wheezing. My lungs felt tight as the fire and black smoke squeezed around us. Embers fell around us, and the strong smell of burning wood masked the smell of the rain. If we don't get out of here then we'll succumb to the smoke!

"Look out!" Feather gasped, his eyes widening.

Before I could say anything, the ground rumbled under me. With a quick turn, I saw a large white blob running towards me. My legs were frozen through, and all I could do was stare.

"Rahhh!" A rough, wheezing hiss sounded to the right. There was a quick flash of gray, and it stopped in front of me. Thistle!

Sorry this took so long, it's been really stressful for me because of school but I hope this chapter doesn't disappoint.
