Chapter 42
Ebony POV:
Rain pattered on the ground, washing the blood away from the grass. Small pools of water on the ground became stained with blood. Even with the heavy rain, the raging fire would not let up.
I lay on the ground, blood pooling around my mangled leg. My eyes were widened with surprise and shock, and my chest rose and fell quickly, my jaws opened wide as I breathed.
Without warning, a loud scream echoed around the burning forest, sending shivers up my spine. The scream was suddenly cut off by a loud thud. Turning my head slowly, I saw Thistle laying frozen near the base of a tree, his eyes wide.
"Cilo! Are you ok?" Killer yowled, turning to look at the slumped blood-stained, creamy-gray shape laying on the ground. "You surely weren't killed by my pathetic brother, right?"
"No, I'm still breathing, aren't I?" The sound of Cilo's rasped, yet annoyed voice sounded blurred behind me. Black spots were dotting my vision, and my head was spinning.
Thistle still hadn't moved. His wide eyes only stared at the sky, looking lifeless. I wanted to opened my jaws to scream out to him, but all I could hear was the ringing in my ears. I tried getting up, but I felt paralyzed. My body felt as though it had turned into stone.
I heard the booming steps of Killer as he came closer to me. I tried not to blink, hoping Killer would think I was dead. No. I can't be a coward. I have to fight.
"Let's just leave them all to get burned alive by the fire," Cilo rasped, his body clasped in the talons of Killer. "They'll die slowly," he snarled.
The ground rumbled under me as Killer walked past, and I lifted my head. "Don't," I rasped, "...walk away from this fight."
Killer turned his giant head towards me, lips curling to reveal blood stained teeth. Rain pattered on his white scales and slicked downwards. "What?" He snickered.
Shaking, I stood up, my talons ripping at the grass in my attempt. My ragged breaths were loud as I tried to stand, my arms shaking like twigs in a hurricane. "I'll stop you," I gasped out, my lungs feeling like they were going to burst. My spine felt like it was on fire as I stood on my hind legs. "Let me... fight..you," I panted.
Lightning suddenly clawed through the dark sky, lighting up the area around us. I could see the flash of those blood-red eyes. Killer growled as his tail lashed, and he flexed his claws. He dropped Cilo on the ground.
"Can you walk?" Killer asked. Once Cilo nodded weakly, Killer then began making his way to me.
I quickly slipped away as the large white hybrid was walking towards me. "I thought you wanted to fight!" I heard his taunting voice behind me. I didn't notice my foot slowly touching the ground, and I winced and let out a scream of agony. I fell over, clutching my bloody ankle as I let out small gasps of pain.
Peering closely, I could see each tiny gash from the teeth sitting in my ankle. The flesh was red and swollen, and blood trickled down and dripped onto the grass, forcing the green blades to turn dark red.
"Stop!" A voice roared. I turned my head weakly and, through the rain, I saw Feather leap from the branch of a burning tree. He opened his arms and glided down, his tail wavering behind him. His feathers were wet and slick with rain.
Killer lifted his head, his jaws opening to snap at Feather, but the young hybrid hissed and put his feet forward, his claws drawing small gashes in the white scales.
Killer howled with pain as blood appeared in the scratches, and he lashed out, but Feather dodged the long talons that stretched towards him. The brown-feathered hybrid hissed and dove down towards me.
I stood up, my tail drooping. I lifted my mangled ankle up, blood still dripping from it. As Feather landed in the grass, Killer roared with rage, the ground rumbling as he stomped his feet in the wet grass.
"Get out of here," I hissed with a wheeze of pain. But Feather refused to go. He stood still as Killer ran towards us, his jaws open wide to reveal sharp, blood stained teeth.
I crouched downwards, the muscles in my legs tensing. I exploded up with a roar, jumping up on the large hybrid's head. I sank my talons in deeply, blood welling around them as they dug deeper into the flesh.
"Killer, stop! We have to go or the fire will kill us!" Cilo roared. He was leaning again a tree, clutching his still bleeding stomach.
Killer lashed his tail, whamming it into a half-burnt tree. There was a loud groaning sound, like the tree was screaming in pain, and then it fell, crashing to the ground with a loud thud. The smell of wet grass and burning wood filled the air, and ashes rained from the smoky black sky.
Another burning tree fell, this time with a louder thud that shook the ground. The damp grass was squished under the burning bark. Then another tree fell, and its branches acted as claws as they slammed down onto Killer, forcing him to the ground.
I leaped off, wincing as I fell on my mauled ankle. I gritted my teeth as the ground shook, and it felt as though someone was clutching my lungs tightly as I struggled to breathe. I lashed my tail, the damp grass brushing against it.
Feather remained frozen like a statue. "What about Cilo?" He asked, tucking in his feathered arms and ducking his head.
"Just leave him to bleed out," I snorted, glancing in the direction of Cilo. The pale sandy-gray hybrid was still slumped against a tree, a puddle of red beneath him. His blood-red eyes darted to me, and his eyes clouded with an intense hatred.
Then a roar erupted from the burning wood. The tree seemed to stand up by itself, until I saw talons clutching the singed wood. Whites scales flashed in the rain, and burning brighter than the fire itself was anger in my brother's eyes. Some of his scales had been burnt, and his tail lashed. He snapped at a burnt branch that curled around his spine.
"We've got to fight with everything we've got," I muttered to Feather, who crouched in a battle stance. "Even if it means dying."
