Chapter 23
--Cilo's POV after running off--
I crashed through the bushes, growling in annoyance as thorns stabbed me. I lashed my tail. I'm going to get away from here and live my own life! I was sick of everyone pushing me around. I only brought up Fear's death to make an escape. I knew Ebony blamed himself for the death of Fear anyways. Stumbling over a tree root, I found myself heading farther and farther away. The sun was beginning to set, turning the sky into a pink and orange mix.
I walked deeper into the forest. It got darker, and thorn bushes always cut across my path. I knew where water was, which was the river I had almost drowned in. But a bit older now, I had grown webbed feet, and webs grew between my fingers. The sail on my back had gotten bigger. I knew this forest well, but something didn't feel right.
I froze as the ground beneath me rumbled like an earthquake. I looked down at my feet, then shook my head. I was probably imagining it. The grass waved in the wind and a nearby puddle of water rippled as another tremble passed through the ground. It was getting closer, feeling stronger with every tremble, and sounding louder.
I began to walk faster, my heart pounding. Trees suddenly blocked my path. Ok, I'll go around. Turning to the right, I began to walk, but I froze in my tracks as I heard a growl rumbling. I looked at the trees. Was something hiding in one of them? Suddenly I saw the trees moving forward. Taking a step back, I wondered if if was hallucinating.
Suddenly, the trees fading into white, revealing the large figure of a white creature with blood-red eyes. I backed up more, then hit a tree. Gasping, I stared we the creature. It looked like Ebony, but there was no way it was. This thing was white with red eyes, and not black with amber eyes. It was very large, larger than Ebony, and a blood-red stripe matching the color of its eyes ran from its eyes all the way down to its tail.
"Who-who are you?" I growled, standing up and glaring at the creature. My frills sprang forward as an attempt to warn the creature off, and I hissed loudly.
The creature stepped forward, its large foot hitting the ground. The earth beneath me trembled so much that I thought it was trembling with fear like me. Suddenly, the creature roared with anger and lunged forward, its jaws clamping on on my tail. I roared with pain. "Wait! Stop!" I cried.
The creature threw me against a tree with one swing of its giant head. I wanted to scream to Ebony for him to help me, but I knew that would make me look pathetic. I wanted to live my own life.
The creature stepped forward and got on all fours. It leaned over me, its giant shadow resting with it. Its red eyes glowed as it looked down on me, drooling dripping from its jaws. "I know your scent, Velocilo. I was sent to find and kill the Indoraptor."
I blinked at the creature. "My name is Cilo," I introduced myself, trying to sound weak. "I ran away from the Indoraptor. I've been planning to kill him, but I wanted to get bigger. But now, I've found some help. You're perfect." I held back a growl. This creature would help me fulfill everything I needed. Ebony just needed to be dead first.
"Show me where this Indoraptor is," the creature snarled, its talons digging into the dirt by me. His tail swished in the air.
"Only if you offer me full protection," I suggested, blinking at the creature. "Now tell me, what are you exactly?"
"My name is Killer. I am the perfect Indoraptor. My sibling is just a damn fake. He probably thinks he is the real deal, when it is actually me," the creature snarled, his talons clicking on the ground.
I glanced at him. "You know Ebony?" I asked.
"I do not know him. I grew up without him. My creators say that he ran away to have a perfect life beyond lab tests. He ran away from me, he ran without me, leaving me behind as though I didn't exist. Now he must pay. I will kill him without mercy for what he has done," I snarled.
"I didn't know Ebony was that cruel!" I gasped. "Follow me, then. I'll show you where that bastard is hiding."
--Ebony's POV--
Feather fluffed his brown feathers out in anger and bared his fangs at me. "You won't even help find Cil-"
He was suddenly cut off as a low growl rumbled around us. I looked towards the trees beside us. Birds flew from the treetops quickly, heading into the night sky while shrieking out alarms. The trees behind the first low looked as though they were moving, and I saw Cilo back there. Relief flood through me. "Cilo!" I cried, rushing forward, Feather at my side.
Cilo suddenly smiled for some reason, his red eyes shimmering. He looked up at the moving trees beside him, which were pushing through the first row of trees.
"Ebony, wait!" Feather's cry rang out in the silent night air.
