JUDGING + CATEGORIES

There will be 13 categories, so please read carefully. There are core categories, and then the big 5.

Fanfics, ongoing/completed, mature, etc. types of stories are allowed anywhere except where otherwise stated (there are a few genre-specific categories, so please read carefully).

Do not apply here. Only apply in the forms category.

Core:

1) Best Cinematography

- This category will judge your book's presentation. Your cover, your title, your blurb, how your chapters are formatted, aesthetics, etc. It does not judge the plot, characters, themes, or world, so if you are someone who is more confident with your graphics, then this is the category for you. 10 slots.

2) Best International Feature

- This category will judge any story that does not take place in the West, but it must clearly not be in the West, so please do not submit a story where it's vague and where in the world we are is unclear. It also must be on Earth. No outer space or worlds that are not Earth. If you're not introducing where in the world the story takes place by chapter 5, then I would recommend not submitting here since it should be clear very early on. 10 slots.

3) Best Visual Effects

- This category will judge your descriptions and writing style. Grammar and spelling are extremely important to this category. However, keep in mind that purple prose will be at a disadvantage in this category. We are looking for an effective balance between structure, plot development, and imagery, so if there is an excess of "pretty" words, it will not aid you in this category. 10 slots.

4) Best Short Film

- This category, as the name implies, will be for short stories only. The shorts must be completed. Oneshots are allowed, but you must submit one oneshot. So if you are submitting a compilation, please submit a specific chapter from the compilation for us to judge. Genre does not matter as long as it is completed and under 20,000 words. 10 slots.

5) Best Production Design

- This category will judge your worldbuilding. Sci-fi and fantasy writers in particular may find this category appealing. It is a worldbuilding-only category. 10 slots.

6) Best Costume Design

- This category will judge your cover. It is a cover-only category, so please do not sign up for this if you are looking for a review of your whole book. Only covers you created are allowed. If you sign up and the cover for the book you submitted was made by someone who isn't you, you will be disqualified. 10 slots.

7) Best Adapted Screenplay

- This category will judge fanfiction only. It will judge your whole book. No restrictions on ongoing/complete, maturity level, LGBTQ+ elements, etc., it just has to be a fanfiction. 10 slots.

8) Best Story

- This category will judge original fictions only. It will judge your whole book. No restrictions on ongoing/complete, maturity level, LGBTQ+ elements, etc., it just has to be an original. 10 slots.

BONUS CATEGORY: READER'S CHOICE

- This category is a bonus category that does not count toward your total submission count. It is a vote-based category for readers, and rules about the voting practices will be released later as we hosts do not tolerate vote spam or unfair votes from random people unfamiliar with your writing.

For this, all you have to do is fill out a separate form in the forms chapter nominating yourself for the category. It is purely fan-voted.

15 slots.

Big 5:

Best Actor

- This will be judging your male protagonist. This is a best male protagonist category, so anyone who is especially proud of their male lead, this is the category for you! Short stories, novellas, and novels are allowed. Any genre (fanfics are fine). 15 slots.

Best Actress

- Same as the last category but with female protagonists. This is a best female protagonist category, so your female lead will be judged. Short stories, novellas, and novels are allowed. Any genre (fanfics are fine). 15 slots.

Best Screenplay

- This category will be judging your plot. Yep, I know. Nothing crazy or complex. This is plot only, though keep in mind themes, world, characters, and grammar can impact a reader's understanding of the plot, so it could factor into the score. 15 slots.

Best Director

- This category will judge the best experimental piece, or anything that is not a traditional short story, novella, or novel. That means poetry, diaries, essays, etc. will all be judged here. 15 slots.

Best Picture

- Best overall book. That means any short story, novella, or novel. Poetry is not allowed in this category, same with other works that do not fall under the short story, novella, or novel umbrella. This is just so it's fair and judges have an even sample size, since judging novels in the same category as poetry is difficult. 20 slots.

Judging Criteria

Judging criteria will be determined by category since there are so many different categories that we want to ensure fair reviews, so instead of slapping one or two or even three criterias here, we will announce them alongside the categories we are judging.

Though, in general, you can expect the criteria to be very category-specific, like the best actor/actress categories will contain things like dialogue, development, personality, etc. Points will add up to 100. Please see Ravendipity's awards (except Padauk) for examples of reviews. All of the reviews will be in-detail, and when you get so much as 0.5 taken off, you will know why. We are not the types of judges to say "Your grammar is perfect" and then give you a 6/10. We will explain every deduction clearly.

The WHO Awards Indie results are the most recent examples of Raven's reviews.
