Part 12

"Don't know what your talking about.  Don't go accusing me of things you can't prove.  I'm here to help you.  Not like your husband whose being a proper detective and following the chief's orders to stay away from you.  I could lose my badge over this.  So if you want my help just shut up and listen."

Danny took off his suit jacket and threw it on the chair next to him.

"First off before I help you, I need some information.  Where in the hell is our son or daughter?  Should be about 20 years old by now.  What did you do?  Adoption?  Abortion?

"How did you know about the baby?  The only ones that knew were my parents and my best friend at the time Cindy."

"After I got out of college, I went to your house.  The man who answered the door said your family had moved.  By chance, I ran into Cindy at a club.  She said she lost touch with you.  I didn't believe her so I started dating her trying to get information from her.  Finally she let it slip that you told her you were pregnant.  She heard you moved away but didn't know where.  I believed that was all she knew so I broke up with her."

"Great detective work, Danny."

"Then by chance I became Tom's partner and he invites me to dinner to meet his wife.  Do you know how shocked I was when I saw you open the door.  You acted like I was just some casual friend from the old neighborhood.  So I kept up the pretense for you."

"Tell me the truth.  Adoption or Abortion? yelled Danny.

Dianna started crying.  "Neither."

"I had a miscarriage.  I was planning on visiting you at your college to tell you about the baby.  The day before I was scheduled to leave, I began having cramps.  My parents took me to the emergency room but I miscarried.  The doctor said it wasn't my fault.  These thing sometimes just happen.  I knew it was my fault that I lost our baby.  If only I had gone to the doctor earlier for prenatal care.  If only I had taken prenatal vitamins earlier.  I was going crazy with the what ifs.  I couldn't face you.  I couldn't let the words come out.  I was in a depression. My parents sent me to a shrink.  He gave me some pills to take.  I threw them away.  Nothing helped.  Finally my parents sent me away to college thinking the change of scenery would make me forget.  That's when I met Tom on the college campus.  He made me laugh.  Forget my problems.  I held onto him like a life preserver.  The more I held on the stronger I became."

"You let a stranger help you?  You couldn't call me and tell me you lost our baby?  You owe me big time, big time.  Do you know it took me 20 years to track you down?  Every time your husband talked about you while we were on a stake out I would just cringe.  He'd go into detail about what you were making for dinner, how you were decorating their house, blah, blah, blah.  Then when he started cheating on you with that redhead, I thought you knew and would leave him.  Something had to give sooner or later so I could make my move."
