Reapings (District Six)

Scarlett's Reaping
"Scaarrrrlettttt!" I open my eyes groggily. It took me a moment why I woke up while it was still dark. Reaping day! How could I forget!? I throw on my standard reaping day outfit, a neat, plain white dress and some ballet flats caked with dirt. I run a brush through my hair and race downstairs. The aroma of breakfast meant my mother was home from work. I greet her with a hug and do the same with my father. They smile momentarily and then go back to what they were doing. I know what they were upset about. My older sister, Julia would be entering. Her name was in 20 times more than mine. Julia sits at the table, eating her breakfast. I join her and soon enough, it's time to head to the center of town. I smile when I see my best friends, Rosie and Evelyn. They smiles quickly back and return to the standard procedures. One they're done, we all stand together, watching the Capital video explaining why we do this in the first place. They say it's to keep our districts in line, but i think it's just so they have entertainment. Ha, entertainment in the form of 24 kids fighting for their lives. A woman with a sky high wig and at least a foot tall high heels walks out. Her glow-in-the-dark lips form a small smile. "Welcome everyone to the reaping of the 125th Hunger Games! May the odds be ever, in your favor!" I recognize her as Samantha Quartz from last years games. Her high heels make a deafening click against the pavement as she heads towards the glass bowl containing countless white slips. "As always, ladies first!" She says a bit too enthusiastically. Julia crosses her fingers and sports a look of concentration. I do the same. She fishes around and grabs a slip. It feels like forever when she finally announces the name. "Scarlet Smith!" Julia's face goes pale and she glances to our parents. My mother mouths, don't you dare. Thanks a lot mom. I walk up, nobody saying those words, I volunteer! I feel like being sick. My heart beats out of my chest. Samantha has a satisfied smile and walks over to the boys bowl. Everyone stares at me and I feel really uncomfortable. I shake as she announces a boys name I barely recognize. He walks up and we shake hands. "Here you have it! Your district six tributes!" She waves and leads us down.
