The Victor's Interview

Julius Flickerman's P.O.V.

The spotlight turns to me and the roaring crowd grows even louder, if that's even possible. I hold my hand up to silence them, smiling.

"Welcome back to the interviews, ladies and gentlemen! Today I will be talking with the one and only Victor of this years Quarter Quell! And now, please give a warm welcome to the Victor of the one hundred and twenty-fifth Hinger Games, Brenda Long from District Seven!" I beam happily to the rejoicing crowd as they scream her name.

She walks onto the stage with a bright smile on her face, but there is a solemness about how she's walking. A brand new pair of glasses rest on the bridge of her nose, even more modern-looking than the last pair. Her raven-black hair hangs freely behind her and she wears a lovely mint-green dress with emeralds covering the neckline and straps. She takes a seat on a velvet sofa and I start the interview.

"Brenda! We're all so happy to see you here today, safe and sound," I say as she adjusts a tiny microphone attached to her ear. She only nods.

"How have you been?"

"Alright..." she says, but the way she says it makes me think otherwise.

"You can tell me," I push, "Is it because of Mason?"

She takes a deep breath, "Yes, it sorta is, I guess. I just didn't think I would make it. I thought that if any of us were, it would've been him or one of the Careers."

"Why didn't you think you'd make it? I mean, you had more skills than a lot of the other tributes. Take Cally, for example."

She shrugs, "I guess, but it didn't feel like it. I felt at a disadvantage because of my sight."

"Well, what about after you got the glasses?"

"I was so overwhelmed by everything I was seeing that it made it hard for me to concentrate on aiming and such. I actually had to take the glasses off when I shot Tai," she explains and I nod.

"Why didn't you take off the glasses when you were trying to shoot Liam, then?"

She pauses, as if trying to reflect on it, "Well, I didn't, because I was worried that if I did happen to miss him with the glasses off, I didn't want to worry about getting them back on in time before he reached me."

"So, what was the first thing that crossed your mind when you killed Liam?" I ask.

"I didn't want to, but he just started coming right at me and I guess I just reacted. When it was over and his canon went off, I didn't know what to think. I kept expecting more tributes to come until I realized that...I had won. I felt pretty relieved, but I also felt guilty for winning."

"Guilty?" I raise an eyebrow, "You should never feel guilty for winning the Hunger Games, especially a Quarter Quell. You've come so far, and you will be loved and remembered forever. Especially you, Brenda. You have made history by becoming the very first and possibly only blind Victor ever!"

She drops her head, "I guess that's nice, and all, but I still feel guilty for taking a place that doesn't feel like it belongs to me. Some of the other tributes went through so much more than I did, and in the end, they were deprived of the one good thing that could happen to a person in the Games. They didn't win, because I did. I could never forgive myself for killing three innocent people either. I personally deprived those tributes of their chance. I should've just let Liam win..."

"You don't have to feel that way. You won because it was meant to be. You can make your District a better, happier place now."

She nods her head and wipes a tear away. I change the subject by asking, "So, if any other tribute could win, besides you of course, who would you want it to be and why?"

"Mason, because he stood by me all the way, and protected me to the very end...and I loved him."

"Aww. Anyone else?"

"Liam, because he stood a chance. He stayed strong in the Games, even after his best friend was killed. He probably made the most kills as well."

"Good reasons," I nod, "So what will you do now that the Games are done?"

There is a short pause, "Go home and try to live the rest of my life without worrying about surviving the Games."

I stand up and offer my hand to Brenda, who takes it gratefully, "Thank you, for visiting me one last time, Brenda. I will see you next year, for the Victory Tour, and at many of the following Games, I hope. Congratulations, I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your life, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"
