The Reapings (District Five and Six)

Vance Blue's P.O.V.

I stand calmly in my section, staring at the stage as the mayor does his speech. Of course I'm volunteering. I can't be without Cally forever. I promised I would go in with her, even though she didn't hear me when I said it.

It's risky to volunteer at a young age, but Sara Higgins did it earlier this year and she made it through the first round.

I wouldn't be volunteering if Cally had died. I don't know what I would've done if that happened.

"Welcome to the Reapings of round two, everyone! I just want to say a quick congratulations to our two female tributes, Cally Blue and Sara Higgins, who will be moving on to the final round! Also, don't be afraid to volunteer. Sara has shown that even young volunteers can make it far. Now, let us begin," Opal Osminof shouts happily.

I guess she'll be happy to know that I'm volunteering.

"Our first tribute is..."

"Um, I volunteer!" I say loudly from my section.

All eyes are on me, probably wondering why I would do such a thing.

"Ooh, thank you for volunteering, young man, what's your name?"

"Vance Blue, Cally's twin brother, I'm thirteen," I say quickly, before turning away and walking to the back of the stage.

"Wonderful! I bet your sister is jumping up and down right now!" Opal walks over to the glass bowl one last time and pulls out another card, "And now, our last boy is...Eric Polt! Congratulations, Eric!"

A tall boy with dark brown hair from the back section runs towards the stage.

"I'm eighteen," he says, his voice calm.

"Thank you, District Five. Please give a round of applause for your two tributes, Vance Blue and Eric Polt!"

She turns to us as we shake hands.

"Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!" Opal shouts, before turning around and sauntering off the stage with us following closely behind.

District Six's Reaping

Chance Brenner's P.O.V.

I follow the line of people shuffling themselves into the town square.

Everyone around me is solemn, or at least trying to be that way. I'm struggling to keep a straight face. It's hard when you know that it could be anyone that will be put into the Games.

I already lost both my friends to the Games a few years ago. Clairie and her brother, Vio, and I were best friends. When Clairie's name was called, Vio didn't hesitate to volunteer to go in too.

Both of them didn't even make it past the Bloodbath. It was a water arena, and they never learned how to swim.

"Our first tribute is...Oliver Dange," Harriet Hawton shouts out to the crowd, a big smile on her face.

A boy from the section in front of mine walks up to the stage, his hands shaking slightly.

"I-I'm fourteen," he stutters.

"Thank you, and now," Harriet pauses to open her second card. I suck in a deep breath as she reads the name, "Our last tribute is...Chance Brenner!"

I slowly exhale. Keep it cool, Chance.

I slowly make my way up to the stage, Harriet smiling at me as I climb the steps.

She holds the microphone to my face and asks how old I am.

"I'm fifteen..."

"Great! Have a Happy Hunger Games, District Six, and may the odds be ever ever ever in your favor!"

I shake Oliver's sweaty hand and walk back to the Justice Building with Harriet and some peacekeepers, wondering how I am going to make it through this alive.
