The Reapings (District Five)
Sara Higgins's P.O.V.
I stand in the town square, patiently waiting for Opal Osminof, District Five's escort, to make her appearance on the stage.
This year, I'm going to volunteer. I know, some people might think of it as a bad idea, but I don't. I'm tired of all the other districts getting so many victors, mostly District One and Two. This year, I want to make a difference, and win these games to make my district proud.
I can see me now. Sara Higgins, Victor of the one hundred and twenty-fifth Hunger Games. And better yet, the fifth Quarter Quell.
Opal Osminof snaps me out of my dreaming state when she announces that it is time to start the Reapings. She plucks a single name from the glass bowl and reads aloud, "Cri-"
I cut her off with my loud shout, "I VOLUNTEER!"
"Wow, a volunteer. How about that everyone?" she smiles at me when I climb the stairs to the stage, "What is your name, sweetheart?"
"My name is Sara Higgins, I'm twelve and I am going to do my best to win these games to make my district and all of Panem proud!" I announce proudly.
"Incredible! A volunteer at the young age of twelve. This is wonderful! Please take a seat while we finish up here."
"Ok, Opal." I say before sitting on a chair at the back of the stage.
"And now for out last girl," Opal says as she reaches into the bowl for another card, "Cally Blue!"
"Cally, no!" someone shouts from the back, where the families are watching. As Cally steps from the thirteen-year-old section, a boy runs up to her from the back.
I was surprised with how alike they looked. I realized that they must be twins. Oh, how I wish I had waited to volunteer for her. I will hate to see her go in the Games without her twin brother. Then again, I would hate if she went in the Games at all.
I had a sister once. She was reaped for the Games last year. I tried to volunteer for her then, but I wasn't eligible for the Games then. She went into the Games and made it to the third day, when she was shot by an arrow through the heart by Tristan Condise, the Career from District One.
"Cally, you can't... Someone please volunteer! Can someone please just volunteer for my twin sister!?" Cally's twin brother pleaded.
Nobody stepped forward for her, other then the peacekeeper who brought her up to the stage.
"How old are you, dearest?" Opal asked in a calm voice.
"I'm thirteen," she responded.
"I'm so sorry your brother can't come right now. Maybe he can volunteer for the boy's Games."
"Leave me alone" Cally said, before she turned to me and held out her hand, which I grabbed and shook quickly. Then Cally walked into the Justice Building.
"Oh, ok then. Ladies and gentlemen, your tributes, Sara Higgins and Cally Blue! Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"
