The Interviews (Part Three)

Julius Flickerman's P.O.V.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please give a round of applause for District Seven's tributes, Mason Paits and Conner Polister!"

The audience claps loudly when the two boys appear on the stage. I wait for the cheering to die down to start the interview.

"Mason, I heard from Eric Polt that you are quite talented with axes."

"Well, naturally. I'm from District Seven. I work with axes all the time."

"What type of axes are you best with, in your opinion?"

"Well, I would say that I'm pretty equal with any kind. I don't know which kind is better for me to be honest."

"I see. Why did you help Eric Polt in training, when he isn't your ally?"

"Because I don't think it's fair for someone to go into the Games without knowing how to use any weapons. He seemed particularly interested in axes, and I was right there, so I couldn't turn him down. Besides, I almost chopped his head off with an axe accidentally, and I had to make it up to him."

"Did you think he is any good?"

"If he had more time, he could be a really good fighter with axes. But I think he's good for the Games. He picked up on throwing axes pretty quickly."

"Did you help anyone else in training?"

"Actually, yes," he nudges Conner with his elbow, "I gave this fella a few tips."

I nod, "That's really nice if you, Mason. Did you consider asking Eric or Conner to join your alliance?"

"I really wanted Eric to join, but I think he already has an alliance. Plus, my allies said that we don't want anyone else in the alliance."

"Hmm. Well, I should talk with Conner now, but I'm looking forward to seeing you in the Games tomorrow."

"Yep, everyone is!" Mason says.

"Conner, what were you thinking when your name was called at the Reapings?"

"I don't know. I felt numb and confused. I wasn't sure that it was possible for my name to be picked out of thousands of others."

"Are you feeling confident for the Games?"

"Not really. My alliance is really weak, and we probably aren't going into the Bloodbath, so we most likely won't make it very far without supplies. Also, the Careers will probably be hunting us because we're smaller tributes."

"Well, who knows, things could turn out differently than you're thinking."

"I sure hope so," Conner says, but he doesn't seem convinced.

"So, is there anything you're hoping for in the arena? Any special attractions?"

"If they put any special attraction in there, I hope it's just tracker jackers or something. But they're usually in a lot of arenas."

"Who knows what the Games will bring. It's a Quell, so it is supposed to be exciting. The Gamemakers have probably settled on everything they want in the arena."

Buzz!!!

"Well, I'm sorry to say that that's all the time we have. The other tributes have to have their interviews too!"

The boy's exit the stage as the crowd continues clapping for them.

"District Eight is next. Don't go anywhere!"

District Eight's Interview

"Hello, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Anthony Wight and Jimmy Jenkin from District Eight to the stage!" I shout enthusiastically to the eager crowd.

When both tributes are seated comfortably beside me, I start the interview.

"Jimmy, are you excited for the Games tomorrow?"

"Not really. I can't seem to get relaxed."

"That's because you're so excited!" I say, trying to sound happy.

"Yeah right."

"Ok, so is there a special someone?" I change the subject.

Jimmy shakes his head immediately, "Nope."

"Hmmm. Do you think you'll make it to the final Games?"

He frowns, "I'm not sure I want to. One arena is enough, but another one after that? I don't think I can get used to it. I mean, what if one arena is a desert, and the next one is a frozen wasteland?"

I nod, "I see your point there. I heard that the arena for the final Games is going I be very interesting. I can't wait."

Jimmy sighs, "That's makes me feel worse."

"Alright, I'll move on to Anthony now."

Anthony nods and waits for the first question.

"What were you thinking when your name was called at the Reapings?"

"I'm not sure. I think I was mostly thinking about how unfortunate it is that I have to go into a Quell. But, other than that, I was pretty okay with it all. I have a good feeling I will make it far and hopefully win this," he replies.

"Is your alliance ready for the Games?"

He smiles, "Definitely, we have special plans as well."

"Ooh, I won't ask, I want it to be a surprise for me. But do tell me, do you think the plan of yours is going to work?"

"We're not quite sure on that, but we have pretty high confidence that it will."

"That's good. If I'm correct, I think you're in the strongest alliance, aside from the Careers."

He nods, "We know, and we are trying to use that as our advantage. Maybe we can get the upper hand."

"Hmmm. I can't wait! It's really going to be-"

Buzz!!!

"Oh, too bad. We'll talk more after the mini game, I'm sure," I say as I shake both tribute's hands before they leave the stage.

"That was District Eight, everyone! Don't go anywhere, because District Nine's tributes will be joining me on the stage momentarily."

District Nine's Interview

"Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome back to yet another interview. Here we are with Nathan Brooke and Don Jandin from District Nine!"

The crowd cheers wildly for the two tributes as they approach where I'm sitting.

"Hello, I'll start with Nathan."

Both boys nod.

"Alright. What have you liked about the Capitol so far, Nathan?"

"Ummm, the food I guess. It's all so good and there are so many flavors."

"Yes, it is good," I agree, "Did you enjoy training for the Games?"

He nods, "Yeah, I learned so much. I spent a lot of time at the survival stations, because I think my fighting skills are good where they are."

"Oh I'm sure! Vance, your ally, told me that you really astonished him with your archery."

"Vance isn't so bad himself. I showed him some things."

"Good. I'm sure the Gamemakers will make sure there are a few bows in the cornucopia for you guys, but you're going to have to go into the Bloodbath to get them."

"Yeah, I know. And we are planning on going into the Bloodbath and meeting up later."

"Ooh, I can see all the action already. A lot of people have said that they're going to the cornucopia. It's gonna be quite a fight," I say.

"Yep..."

"Ok, Don's turn!"

Don leans forward in his seat, preparing for the questions.

"So, I'm sure you're going to the cornucopia, Don. What weapon are you going to be looking for?"

"Either a sword or daggers," he replies.

"Cool. How are you liking it here in the Capitol?"

"I love it, it's just too bad that I can't stay here longer. Even when I do win the Games, I'll be living in the Victor's Village."

"Well, if you do win the Games, you would still get to spend some time at the Capitol and then there's the Victory Tour, which ends here in the Capitol."

"Yeah, but it won't feel the same. I have all this attention now. Next year, there will be another Victor, and nobody will even remember me," he says.

"You will still be a mentor, and that's good."

He frowns, "I guess."

"So, do you get along well with your allies?"

"Sorta. They don't seem to understand that they're only in the alliance to help me win."

I raise an eyebrow, "You really are set on winning, aren't you?"

"Well, yeah. I can feel that this is a big year for me. That I will accomplish great things."

"Ah huh. And you will even kill your own allies to do so?"

"Of course! I can take them all down with one hand tied behind my back if I wanted to!"

Buzz!!!

I stand up and say goodbye to the boys as they exit the stage.

"Alright, that's nine districts down, so three to go! Next up, District Ten!"
