Day Three (Afternoon)
Blake Richard's P.O.V. (D3)
My allies and I sit quietly around our fire, listening for more canons. There were two that were only a few minutes apart which we heard a little while ago. That means that only two more tributes need to die for us to make it out. When we are sure that no more canons will fire for now, Vance stands up.
"I guess that's all for now," he says, "I was hoping that there would be two more so we could get out of here already."
He misses Cally. Every day, he has been telling us that he can't wait to get in the next arena with Cally. Honestly, I'm dreading going into another arena. One is enough.
"Guys," Nathan speaks up, "I think we should talk."
"About?" Dean asks.
"About the next Games," he replies, "Do we want to still be allies in the next arena?"
Everyone pauses to think. Then Dean says, "It depends on certain things. You see, Vance, Blake and I volunteered for reasons. We have other people in the Games to be with. So that means that we want them in our alliance."
"Two more people isn't so bad," Nathan says, "Cally and Kaya can definitely join."
"Um...what if I had someone I want in the alliance?" I ask.
Everyone looks at me. I can see them starting to remember.
"Oh, right," Nathan says, "I'm sure Kierra can join too. What do you guys think?" he turns to Dean and Vance. They nod.
"Well, I'm not sure if she'll join. I need to talk to her first," I say, "Another issue is, she has an ally already too. Flora Cottonweed. I think they are still allies for the next Games."
Nathan rubs his chin, "I don't think that can happen. Eight people in an alliance is too many."
I think a moment. What if I left the alliance? I could join Kierra's alliance. Then this alliance would only have five people. That's still a lot, but it's better than eight.
"I'll leave," I say, "I can join Kierra's alliance with Flora."
Everyone looks at each other, "Are you sure?" Nathan asks.
I nod, "I'll be fine. I just hope she let's me join them."
"If that's what you want to do," Nathan says, "But if they won't let you join, you're free to come back to this alliance."
"Thanks."
"Alright," Vance interrupts, "Who's hungry?"
He holds up two squirrels he just finished cooking. He slices off parts of them and hands them out.
"You know, I wonder why we haven't seen anyone else in these woods yet," Dean says.
I look around, "Maybe there are other tributes. We just haven't seen them yet."
"Well, if there is anyone else in here with us, I hope it isn't Don and his allies. Those guys are tough," Vance says.
The sound of cracking twigs causes us to stop talking. We all reach for our weapons and search the trees with our eyes.
I spot Eric Polt walking about thirty meters away in the trees. It looks like he is just going to keep walking. There is no way he didn't notice us, especially with our fire. Maybe he doesn't want to pick a fight. He is alone, after all.
He glances at us quickly, but continues walking. That confirms that he doesn't want to fight us. Either way, we stay ready for him to attack until we can no longer see him.
"Do you think he'll come back?" Dean asks from behind us.
After another glance in the direction Eric went, Nathan says, "I don't think so. If he wanted to fight us, he would've done it now."
"Good, because I'm not looking forward to fighting any time soon," Dean says as he settles back down beside a tree.
"None of us are," Vance puts in.
James Oxford's P.O.V. (D10)
"I don't think he's gonna make it," I say, looking down at Brad.
He still hasn't woken up since yesterday and his shoulder isn't looking any better. In fact, it looks worse. It's red and swollen now. He's lucky he didn't die when Jarus and Mason decided to give us a visit. He didn't get killed because I guarded him the whole time the fighting was going on. And now, Chance and Jimmy are dead. I probably could've stopped that, if I didn't stay with Brad instead.
Luke comes over to me and looks at Brad, "I don't know. If those two last deaths happen soon, he'll make it, for sure."
"I wonder how much longer we'll have to wait. It's mostly tougher tributes now."
"Not really," Jason speaks up, "There's still Nathan's alliance. Most of them aren't too tough. Maybe we should find them and get this over with."
Luke shakes his head, "No, we'll wait this out. I'm not in a hurry to get anymore of us killed. Losing two allies in one night is enough. There's only the three of us now, and Brad."
I nod, "I agree. We don't need to take any unnecessary risks. Let the others handle them."
"Alright," Jason says.
Luke walks over to the window, "It's getting dark. I'll take first watch tonight. James, I'll wake you up to switch with me later."
I sit on the ground and open my sleeping bag, "I guess I should get some sleep then. Wake me up for the death toll."
Liam Fledger's P.O.V. (D2)
I take a bite of a juicy red apple Brendan handed me. He seems to be in a rather good mood now that we have the cornucopia back.
We decided to keep the weapons on the roof of the cornucopia, even though I doubt anyone will try to come here. The Games will probably end tomorrow. I mean, the last Games ended on day three. I guess we're gonna finish up a bit later.
"I'm gonna take a look around," Tai says, standing up. He walks around the back of the cornucopia.
I look at Brendan, who is now skipping rocks across the water, "You know, how come you haven't killed anyone yet?"I say.
He gives me a look, "Because you're killing everyone."
I roll my eyes, "I only killed like two tributes...at least I think it was two. I'm losing count."
"So am I," he nudges me, "At least I can trust you to handle yourself."
"Please, you're the one I'm worried about."
He waves a hand at me, "I'll be fine. Just relax and focus on getting better."
I raise an eyebrow, "Somehow I don't think you meant to focus on getting my arm better."
He grins and points an accusing finger at me, "Don't you think I didn't notice your sloppy fighting earlier."
"Dude, I have a broken arm and you're criticizing my fighting skills? Besides, I haven't exactly seen you make any kills yet."
"Oh, you've got me there," he says as he skids another rock across the water.
"Really? I actually beat you?" I try to sound amazed, "Well that never happens..."
Brendan shakes his head, "I give up."
"Hey, guys," Tai says quietly, walking towards us, "I think we're being watched." He nods his head in a direction and we follow it with our eyes. Tai is right. There is the clear form of someone's head poking above a pile of broken boards near the edge of the water. Whoever it is, they duck behind the pile once they see Brendan and I looking at them.
"Maybe it was Mason or Don," Tai suggests.
"Somehow I don't think they would come back," Brendan says with his eyes still locked on the pile.
"Neither do I," I agree, "Whoever it is, I think they're alone."
"What makes you think so?" Tai asks.
I point to the retreating dark figure on the street, "That good enough for you?"
Brendan nods, "Maybe they saw Mason and Jarus somewhere and thought the cornucopia was up for dibs."
"Even if it was, I don't think one person could stay here on their own," Tai says, "The other tributes would easily overpower him once they found out it was only one person here."
"Yeah."
Brendan yawns loudly, "Well, I'm gonna get some shut-eye. Don't bother waking me up for the death toll. I already know who died today anyways."
I look up at the sky. It's a shame Damon died earlier. I'm sure he'd be happy to know that he died helping us win back the cornucopia. He was kind of our team leader. At least we got it back. I'm also glad that Don was the one to die from Mason and Jarus's alliance. He was so annoying. At his interview, he was going on and on about how he will win the Games, and that everyone in his alliance is only there to help him win.
I sigh and turn to Tai, who is inspecting a trident, "Can you take first watch? I should sleep I guess."
He nods, "Yeah, sure. I'll wake one of you up later."
I stand up and walk into the horn, where we had set up three sleeping bags. I found mine and made myself comfortable. I allow numerous thoughts to circle through my mind as I slowly drift off into a deep sleep.
