Day One (Afternoon)
Nathan Brooke's P.O.V. (D8)
Jason whispers yet another curse as we make our way through the thick ring of trees. I sigh. Both of us aren't in the best of moods because Luke died at the Bloodbath, and we watched Liam kill James. We were hiding in the field the whole time. Jason kept trying to go help, but I stopped him because we were outnumbered. It was already too late for James anyways.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
Only four deaths at the Bloodbath. How did that happen? There should've been more. The Capitol probably isn't too happy about that.
Jason curses again. I roll my eyes.
"Jason, try to forget about it, okay?"
"How could I forget about that? About any of this?" he shoots back.
"I'm just trying to get you to calm down. You need to keep a cool head if we want to get through this."
He nods, but his eyebrows are still knitted together in frustration. I roll my eyes again.
Just then, we come to the edge of the trees. Jason and I both stop in our tracks, wearing shocked expressions. The ground before us is completely gone. There is nothing there. We lean over the edge to see nothing but an endless blue sky beneath the arena.
Jason suddenly starts nudging me, "Nate, look!"
I follow the direction he is pointing his finger. My jaw drops when my eyes find a floating island over one hundred meters away. A forest rests on top of it, and there is a waterfall pouring over the edge, into the void below. It looks like something from a movie.
Jason nudges me again, "Look over there!"
Once again, my eyes follow his finger to a rope-bridge attached to the edge of the island we stand on. The other end of the bridge is attached to the forest island.
Jason grabs my arm an pulls me over to the bridge, "Let's go!"
I eye the bridge nervously when we reach it. It's made of metal and cables, and it looks very sturdy. Finally, I nod and we start walking across the bridge.
Brenda Long's P.O.V. (D7)
"Brenda, hurry up, will you?" Mason whispers ahead of me.
I sigh in annoyance, "Listen, Mason, you have to understand that I'm blind and have to take my time to get around. Especially when nobody is helping me know what my surroundings are!"
"Shhh!" he whispers harshly, "Don't be so loud, will you? We might've been followed. Not to mention, we aren't too far away from the cornucopia."
"I'll be quiet when you stop complaining!"
"Ugh! I'm not complaining! I just want you to be quiet and keep up with me!"
I hold out my hand, "Here's a deal. I'll be quiet and not complain if you lead me."
There is a moment of silence, then Mason finally says, "You want me to hold your hand?"
I sigh again, "Yes, now will you just take it?"
"But-"
"Take my hand already!"
Mason mumbles something that even my keen ears didn't hear. I probably didn't want to hear it anyways. Then he reluctantly takes my hand and says, "This way."
He leads me through what he explains as a small forest that surrounds the cornucopia. I can also hear the birds and other wildlife, and the rustling of leaves.
Suddenly Mason stops and I smash right into his back.
"Ow! Watch where you're going!" he exclaims.
I sigh again, and I hear him say, "Oh wait...sorry, I forgot you're blind."
"Yeah, keep that in mind next time. But why did you stop?"
"B-because we have reached a ledge..."
"A ledge?"
He pauses a few moments then says, "That's weird."
"What is?"
I hear him scratching the back of his head, "Ummm...I think we're on an island."
"Then wouldn't there be water?" I ask.
"No, a floating island...we are in the sky!" he says ecstatically.
I raise my eyebrows, "What? That's impossible!"
"I know! When they said it was going to be an interesting arena, they weren't lying."
I laugh, "I guess not."
"Woah! There's another island!" Mason almost shouts, "There is a bridge attached to it...come with me!"
This time he doesn't hesitate to grab my hand and pull me behind him. He runs so fast that I stumble several times, just trying to keep up with him. He stops again suddenly and I wreck into him again.
I groan, "A little warning next time."
He takes my hand again, "I found the other end of the bridge, let's cross it!"
He starts to pull but I stand my ground, "Mason, wait. We don't know what's on that island. There could be mutts, or other tributes."
"Those things could be in any part of the arena. Come on!" he tugs on my arm, but I don't budge, "By golly, you're stubborn!"
"What does the other island even look like?"
He sighs and I hear him turn away, "Ummm...it looks like some sort of jungle. It's got a waterfall too."
"Alright...if you think it's safe, let's go."
"Yes!" Mason rejoices. He roughly tugs on my arm as he pulls me onto the bridge.
Dean Willow's P.O.V. (D12)
Kaya and I slowly make our way across the metal bridge, to the forest island. This whole arena is incredible.
I look back at my sister. She looks terrified.
"Kaya, it's gonna be fine. Just don't look down."
She forces her eyes to look at me instead of the blue sky below us. Her hands are clinging to the cable railing.
I smile, "That's it. Just look at me."
When I turn away from her, my smile fades. I look down at the metal boards we are walking on. There is a two-inch space between each board. I'm worried Kaya or I might fall over the side. The whole bridge rocks with every step we take.
"Dean, why are the clouds green?" Kaya asks softly.
I look up at the light-green clouds. Something about them feels strange. They move a lot faster than normal clouds would also.
I turn back to Kaya, "I don't know. Maybe it's a special twist the Gamemakers added."
She nods and continues walking. Finally, we reach the edge of the forest island. We look around at the trees and bushes. Aside from it being in a floating island, it looks exactly like any other ordinary forest.
Suddenly I hear a soft beeping sound, and Kaya looks at me for answers. We look around and our eyes find a silver parachute gliding through the air. It lands gently on the ground by our feet. I bend down and pick it up.
"A sponsor gift? Already?" Kaya says.
I shrug, "I only got weapons at the Bloodbath. Maybe it's food."
I pry it open to find that I'm correct. Inside the container is a small pouch filled to the brim with bread and fruit.
"Cool!" Kaya says as she reaches for some grapes.
I pull the pouch shut before she can, "Sorry, but we can't eat it all right away. We should wait until we're actually hungry to eat it."
She frowns, "Okay."
"Alright, now let's find somewhere to make camp," I say as I tie the pouch to my belt.
Cally Blue's P.O.V. (D5)
Vance and I finally find a suitable place to rest after we make it to the jungle island.
Vance sniffs as he takes a sip from our water bottle, "Why did we leave her behind?"
I take a deep breath and let it out before saying, "There was no time. If we stayed any longer, we would've died as well. She sacrificed herself to buy us time."
Vance looks at the ground and hands me the bottle, "I know..."
I think back to the events of the Bloodbath earlier today. That's where Sara died. We went into the cornucopia to get supples, and while we were running away, Iona and Jarus followed us. Sara stopped running and told us to keep going and not stop. No matter how much Vance and I yelled at her not to do it, she went anyways. She turned around and took on Iona and Jarus. I had to pull Vance away as they took her down. She bought us just enough time to get away unnoticed.
I gulp down some of the water and let it wash my thoughts away. Then I open my pack. Vance does the same.
Inside mine is a rope, four apples, a package of dried peaches, and a sleeping bag. Vance has a filled water bottle, some cheese, string, and an extra jacket. Both of us also managed to get weapons as well. Vance got a bow and filled quiver, and I got two daggers.
"We got lucky. Look at all this stuff!" I say, trying I cheer up my twin.
"Hmm. I think I'm gonna take a nap," is all he says.
I open my pack and fish out my sleeping bag, "That's a good idea. Then you can take watch tonight while I'm asleep."
"Ah huh."
He accepts the sleeping bag and settles himself inside it and almost immediately drifts off into a peaceful sleep.
I lean back against a vine-covered tree trunk and listen to the calming chirps of insects and other wildlife of the jungle.
This is it...the final round. Let's just hope we can make it to the end...and then...who knows what will happen.
