Day Nine (Morning)

Nathan Brooke's P.O.V. (D9)

I am sitting in the middle of our campsite, carving a stick up, while Cally paces non-stop around me in a perfect circle. She keeps mumbling things to herself and she punches a tree every once in a while. I wince every time she does.

I roll my eyes as she throws her fist at another tree, spraying bark all over the campsite.

"Cally, relax, will you?" I finally speak up, but I know she's gonna be mad.

As expected, she turns sharply to face me, "Relax?! How am I supposed to do that?! How is ANYBODY supposed to do that when they're in the Hunger Games?! Especially after your brother just died..."

I sigh, "I'm just trying to get you to stop beating up the poor trees. Give a little respect for nature."

"Oh, I'm sorry," she says, "I didn't realize you were a tree-hugger!"

"I'm...not," I reply, "I would just appreciate if you'd stop it. You're scattering bark bits everywhere, and it's giving me a headache."

She gives a long, agitated sigh before she plops down on the ground. Finally, she is quiet.

"This is going to end today, isn't it?" she says quietly to herself. That makes me stop carving, because she could be right.

Liam Fledger's P.O.V. (D2)

I throw another knife at the cornucopia, so hard that it makes a small dent. I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I couldn't sleep all night because I was paranoid that somebody would come in the middle of the night and try to kill me too. Nobody came, so that's a good thing. I just can't shake this feeling that I'm a major target for the other tributes now. I'm the last Career of the Quarter Quell. The other tributes probably want me gone. Nobody wants me to win. Only Brendan would've, but he's gone now.

I slam my fist against the wall. I wish I could just stop thinking about it. About what I'm going to do now that my best friend is gone. I guess the only thing left to do is fight and hope I come out on top.

I find my sword and put it in my belt, but then I see Brendan's sword leaning against the wall, where I left it. I take my sword out and toss it away and I replace it with Brendan's. It still has stains of Vance's blood all over it, but I don't care.

Then I walk out of the horn and start pacing back and forth, waiting for anyone to come.

Suddenly, a crashing boom catches my attention. It wasn't exactly like a canon, so it couldn't have been somebody's death. It sounded more like something hitting the ground in the woods. Maybe a tree fell? Just then, another bang comes from a different direction in the woods and I start to smell smoke. A tree catches fire somewhere in the woods and a steady stream of smoke rises in the air above it. The fire quickly starts to spread to the other trees and I can hear the thuds of trees falling. Birds and other wildlife start to rush from the scene. Then I realize what's going on. The Gamemakers are bringing the tributes together. They want this to end.

Soon enough, the whole ring of trees around the clearing I'm in are filled with flames that reach to the clouds. Tributes are bound to appear any minute now. I hold up my sword and start turning around in circles, preparing for anyone to come at me from any direction.

Mason Paits's P.O.V. (D7)

A fiery tree groans as it falls right before our feet, spreading sparks everywhere. Brenda screams as some of the sparks fly at us, but we are okay. I grab her arm and start to lead her through the flaming maze of smoke and fire. We both start coughing as the smoke intensifies. The heat is getting hotter every second causing us to sweat a lot.

I look around for where to go. There isn't a source of water on this island, so that option is down the ditch. So that leaves the cornucopia. It's the only place that doesn't have trees or bushes to catch on fire.

"Come on," I choke out, "We have to go to the cornucopia."

"We can't!" Brenda says, pulling on my arm, "The other tributes will be there! The Gamemakers are pulling us together."

A cracking sound from above us causes me to look up. A huge, flaming branch has broken off of the tree beside us and is plummeting down to us.

"Look out!" I shout, instinctively diving on Brenda to shove her out of the way.

The branch hits my back and my jacket immediately starts to catch on fire. Quickly, I struggle to get the jacket off. I finally do, but only after the fire had burned part of my shoulder. The burned skin bubbles and blisters with heat.

"Are you alright?" Brenda asks in concern.

I nod as I stand up quickly, "To the cornucopia!"

Brenda takes my hand and starts leading me for a change. We dodge fiery bushes and trees and jump over rocks and burning logs as we make our way to the golden horn. I can see it glinting in the sun through the trees. We're almost there.

Finally, the screen of smoke becomes thinner as we tumble into the clearing, gasping in fresh air. I hadn't realized just how much smoke I had breathed in until now. My throat feels like it's on fire and it stings with every breath. Brenda is acting like hers feels the same.

When I can sorta breathe properly again, I look at our surroundings. The cornucopia rests in it's normal place, in the middle of the clearing. Liam is standing outside the horn, looking around at the forest-fire cautiously. I wonder if he's seen us yet. My question is answered when he glances over at us, but he looks away. I'm surprised that he doesn't just come over and kill us while he still can. Suddenly, Nathan and Cally stumble into the clearing clumsily. They rest their hands on their knees and start panting. Cally looks like she has a bad burn on her arms and hands. I have a burn too, but it doesn't look as bad as hers.

I guess this is it. All we have left to do is fight to the death. I wasn't prepared for it to be so soon, but I guess you can never be sure when it comes to the Hunger Games.
