Day Nine (Afternoon)
Cally Blue's P.O.V. (D5)
Everybody is frozen in their place. We all know what we have to do, but nobody wants to be the one to act first. I know that if I go first, everyone will attack me. That goes for everyone, really. Even if it came down to it, I can't do much with my hands burnt up. While Nathan and I were running through the forest-fire, I tripped and I landed smack on top of a burning bush. Now my hands and arms are smoldering with bad burns.
A burst of static crackles through the silence, causing all of us to cover our ears.
"Congratulations, tributes! You have made it to the final day of the Games!" the voice of Gladius Glemming announces, "You may now proceed with the fight to the death. May the odds be ever in your favor!"
There is another burst of static as the transmission cuts off.
When I turn back to face the cornucopia, everyone else is facing the same way. Five tributes, four deaths, one Victor. After the deaths of forty-seven tributes, the Capitol will finally get their Victor.
Ladies and gentlemen, let the final battle of the one hundred and twenty-fifth Hunger Games and fifth Quarter Quell...begin!
Liam Fledger's P.O.V. (D2)
Everyone seems to be slowly getting their weapons together, watching one another as they do. I just stand there and wait. Then there's a movement. Nathan starts running towards the horn. He's probably going for another bow, since I destroyed his last one.
When he's close enough, I hold Brendan's sword in front of me. Nathan jumps over my sword as I swing it at his leg. He continues running into the horn, where he starts searching through the racks of weapons. I run in after him.
When he sees me coming, he starts throwing anything he can get his hands on. I dodge an axe and a knife, then more axes and knives. One of them scrapes past my upper left arm, but it's good. I get into the horn just as Nathan finds a bow. I probably should've thrown these weapons away.
He reaches to his quiver to retrieve an arrow, but I throw myself at him before his hand reaches one. Cally enters the horn behind us.
I shove Nathan against the wall and raise my sword. He drops to the ground as I slice my sword at his head. The blade of the sword gets wedged in a crevice of the cornucopia and I start to try pulling it out. It won't budge.
I spare a look over my shoulder and my eyes go wide. Nathan is swinging an axe at me. I instinctively duck out of the way and trip him with my leg. Then Cally jumps into the fight, literally. She leaps over Nathan and lands her boot on my face. Blood starts to dribble from a cut in my cheek.
I scramble to my knees and grab Cally's arm. Then I swing her over my shoulders. She flips over my head, her leg hitting Brendan's sword, causing it to loosen enough to fall out of the crevice.
I take the sword and go over to Cally. Nathan climbs to his feet behind me and grabs the handle of my sword as I raise it behind my back. He tugs, pulling my arms back a little. I kick my leg back at him, but I miss. I can hear him breathing closely behind me, so I assume he's close enough for me to hit him with my head. So I jerk my head harshly backwards, hitting him smack in the nose. And my sword swings forward almost too fast when he releases. The blade digs into Cally's neck, severing the arteries and windpipe. She doesn't even scream, probably because I cut her vocal chord too. She just makes a few strange choking sounds then goes limp.
BOOM!
Nathan is staring at her in shock, but it doesn't last long. There is no time to waste. He starts running out of the horn with his bow and I chase after him. Brenda and Mason are still over by the edge of the clearing, whispering things to each other and continuously looking our way.
Nathan takes out an arrow and fires at them. His precision is amazing. The arrow goes right for the center of Mason's head, but he saw it coming and ducks. Then he and Brenda start to run. Looks like they're trying to avoid the fight as well as possible. That won't last long.
Nathan continues running after them, while I chase him. No matter how fit I am, he's pretty hard to keep up with. I will get him though, and I will kill him.
He fires another arrow at the two tributes, but this time, it meets it's mark. However, Nathan took a risk and slowed down when he took the shot. It takes me no time to reach him now.
Mason Paits's P.O.V. (D7)
I turn around, and there it is. An arrow, coming right for Brenda. For an instant, it's like everything is in slow motion. I try to weigh my options as the arrow gets closer, but it's too late to do anything. But...there is something I can do...
Without hesitation, I jump in front of the arrow. It goes into the right side of my chest, splattering blood on my clothes and I release a scream as a pulsating pain appears. Brenda is there the moment I hit the ground. Her hands clapped over her mouth in shock as tears start to form. I look down at my chest and realize this is it...I'm going to die.
"Mason! Why did you do that?! You didn't have to save me!"
"Yes, I did. Brenda," I say, meeting her gaze, "I have something I need to tell you."
"W-what is it?" she says through a sob.
"I...I love you."
She starts crying even more as she says, "I love you too."
Then she leans over and we kiss, her tears falling on my face. I would be happy, but I can't be, knowing that this is the last moment I will have with Brenda.
Then she finally moves away, looking at the arrow in my chest, "Is it bad?"
"I think so..." I reach my hand up, "Here's a deal, I won't complain if you hold my hand."
An instant flashback comes to me at what I just said. I remember that on the first day of the Games, we were walking when Brenda asked me the same thing and I said, you want me to hold your hand?
Her hand immediately finds mine and squeezes tightly as she says, "You want me to hold your hand?"
She remembered too. I look up and smile at her beautiful face. Somehow, she looks more beautiful now than she ever has.
A sudden throb of pain in my chest forces me to look away. The pain is so bad that my whole chest has gone numb because my nerves can't seem to register it. I turn my head and cough up a mouthful of blood on the grass.
"Mason?" Brenda says, squeezing my hand a little harder, "Please don't leave me."
I find it becoming harder to breathe, but I force myself to keep going as long as I can. My heart seems to be having trouble keeping up. Tears are rolling down my face. I struggle to keep my eyes open, and I can see blackness taking over from all of the blood loss. My hand starts to become weak in Brenda's firm grasp. I know that it's almost over for me.
"Brenda..." I say, but it only comes out as a whisper, "I don't regret doing this for you."
"No!" Brenda is screaming and shaking her head.
"It'll be okay..."
I let out one last breath, and I can't seem to bring any more breaths in. I feel the dull thumping of my heart grow fainter and fainter until it's all gone. With one last look at Brenda, I close my eyes.
BOOM!
Universal P.O.V.
All of Panem is on the edge of their seats after Mason's canon goes off. It was a heartbreaking death, but the Games must go on. While Brenda is screaming and shaking Mason's lifeless body, Nathan and Liam are at the other side of the clearing, locked in combat.
Liam swings his sword over his head in an arch, landing it on Nathan's shoulder. Nathan drops his bow and holds his shoulder, while Liam slashes again. He opens a cut in Nathan's side and he goes down on his knees. By now, we all know who's winning that fight. Liam raises his sword again and drops it on Nathan's skull, splitting it in half.
BOOM!
This is it...only two tributes remain. Liam wearily kneels down, still holding his friend's sword. Brenda has sorta pulled herself together and is on her feet.
Liam is still looking at Nathan's body. I can't help but think that he's finished. It seems like in the end, his main goal was to get Nathan back for killing Brendan. At least Liam had the satisfaction of achieving that. But now, he will have to fight Brenda to win.
Liam finally stands back up and stares at Brenda, who is staring back at him through her special glasses. Liam takes a step closer, looking at Mason, then back at Brenda. Brenda notches an arrow into her bow and fires, too quickly to have time to aim. The arrow whizzes right past Liam, but he didn't even look at it. He just continues walking towards her. She fires two more arrows, but misses both times. How is this happening?
Brenda tosses her bow on the ground and bends down to Mason. She slowly unlatches the axe from his belt. Then she starts to walk towards Liam. We are all curious about how this will turn out, because Brenda has never even used an axe before.
Then the first strike is made. Brenda swings the axe viciously and Liam bends over to avoid it. Then Liam swings his sword upwards at her, the tip hitting Brenda's chin. She doesn't let this faze her. Brenda swings the axe at two different angles now. The first swing is aimed at Liam's head, and the second at his legs. The second strike hits his boot, causing a few sparks to spray out. With one boot broken, Liam isn't balanced well. The gravity turned off in that one boot.
He uses this to his advantage actually. The next time Brenda takes a swing, he jumps into the air, flipping over her head gracefully and landing in a heap on the ground behind her. He quickly regains his stance and throws an attack at her with his sword. Brenda is a bit confused at what he just did, but she recovers quickly and blocks the attack with the metal axe. Then she moves so quickly that Liam didn't see the next thing coming. She drops to the ground and swipes the axe across his leg, then she gets back up.
Liam grunts, but stays standing. He pushes through the pain and kicks Brenda, causing her to fly to the ground. Then he's standing above her, sword coming down, and she rolls to the side. She gets into a standing position and brings the axe behind her back, ready to attack. Liam raises his sword. Then there is a strike. A scream. Blood. A canon. A Victor.
