Day Four (Morning)
Blake Richard's P.O.V. (D3)
Everything around me seems to be spinning as I once again attempt to walk. I take a step. The next thing I know, I am crashing into a tree. I fall down and shake my head, blinking. Now my head hurts even more than before.
I had finally just woken up a few minutes ago from when Vance hit me over the head with something. Now I have a killer headache and I have no idea where Kierra is. I doubt she would've just left me after the fight. That is, if she even won the fight. What if she didn't win? What if she's dead now, and I just don't know it?
I quickly drive the thought that Kierra might be dead from my mind. There's only a small possibility that she would've lost anyways, right?
"I've gotta find her," I say to myself as I climb to my feet again.
I fight back the dizziness and try to focus on finding Kierra as I carefully walk through the jungle. I wonder where she would've gone if we got split up. We should've made a meeting place beforehand just in case something like this came up.
I don't think she would've left me in the first place. She knew she needed an ally. Maybe she thought I was dead? No, a canon would've surely gone off.
I stop walking and just stand there, completely clueless as to where I should look. It would be impossible for me not to run into any other tributes. I know that there are quite a few on this island with me.
Maybe I should just stay here. Then maybe Kierra will come back to me. She probably just had to get away from Vance and Cally and got lost on her way back to me. She'll be back soon, I'm sure.
I sit down against a gnarly tree and put my hands in my jacket pockets. My fingers suddenly feel the cold metal of something. I pull the object out of my pocket. It's my token, a bronze ring with a 3 printed on it. Polly gave it to me before the Reapings.
My mind wanders back to the Reaping day, when Polly gave it to me.
"This might be useful," she says.
I raise my eyebrows, "For what?"
"To earn Kierra's trust in the final round."
"If I make it to the final round," I point out.
"Whatever. Just promise me that you'll keep it on during the Games."
I remember all the things Polly and I did together. I remember her smiles and bright attitude that could always make anyone's bad day turn into a good one. I remember how those smiles and that attitude had vanished the day I volunteered.
"Why did I do it?" I ask myself out loud as I turn the ring around in my fingers.
Why did I volunteer and leave all of that behind? I could've stayed with Polly, but I didn't. I left her behind so I could be with Kierra. I was so stupid! How could I think that volunteering for the Hunger Games would be a good idea? Either Kierra or myself, or even both of us, are going to die anyways! So why did I ruin my life? How did I think this would work?
I look up to the sky, "I'm sorry, Polly."
I know she's watching me. She's probably crying. I hate to make her cry. She's the best thing that was ever in my life, and I've destroyed my chance to see her again. Even if I do get back to her, nothing will be the same. I will be living in the Victor's Village, and I will have the Victory Tour to deal with, and on top of that, nobody will trust me anymore. I don't want it.
I slip the ring onto one of my fingers and promise myself that I will never take it off.
Delinia Spokes's P.O.V. (D4)
"So where are we going again?" I ask as Tai and I follow Grace through the forest.
"The middle island," Grace answers plainly.
"Isn't that the one with the cornucopia and the Careers on it?" Tai asks.
"Yes, it is," Grace answers again.
"Why are we going there?" Tai asks.
"We need more stuff and we all know that the cornucopia has the best of everything."
"What do we need?" I ask.
"Tai needs a weapon, and we need more food."
"Alright, but do you at least have a plan of attack?"
Grace sighs, "Not really, but I'm working it out."
Without further conversation, we all continue walking until we reach the cable bridge that goes to the cornucopia island. To be honest, I'm surprised nobody has tried cutting this thing down yet. Maybe they did, but the metal is too strong.
We start across the bridge, and I can't shake this feeling that we're being watched. My eyes scan the trees behind us on the forest island, then they scan the ring of trees ahead of us. Nothing. Or at least nothing I can see.
We reach the end of the bridge and head straight into the tree line.
"Any plans yet?" I whisper to Grace.
We crouch behind a bush once we are in sight of the cornucopia. I notice Grace's eyes wandering all over the area, taking everything in.
Jean is inside the horn, inspecting some weapons and muttering to herself about something, while Brendan and Liam are walking to the side of the cornucopia. They stop and do something with their boots. My jaw drops as they start to float in thin air!
They push slightly off the ground at a bit of an angle. They soar up, over the cornucopia, then press something on their boots again, and drop onto the roof. Then they do their special handshake.
"You guys might not need to do much," Grace speaks up, "I can probably get in there on my own and get the things we need, but I might need a little distraction."
I look at Tai, "We can make a distraction."
"Great!" Grace whispers, "So wait for my signal."
Then she disappears behind the bush and starts to crawl quickly but silently through the field. She dives behind a pedestal and checks the cornucopia again. Brendan and Liam are now sitting on the roof, chatting. And now Jean is outside the cornucopia and walking behind it.
Grace looks at us and shakes her head, telling us not to make the distraction yet.
As soon as Jean disappears behind the cornucopia, Grace makes her move. She dashes straight for the entrance, moving without even a little sound. She's good. We patiently wait for her signal, but she still doesn't give it. I'm starting to wonder if she even needs a distraction. Maybe it was just as a back up plan.
She enters the horn just as Jean reappears on the other side of the horn. Grace already has two packs over her shoulders and is looking around for something else. Jean is coming closer to the entrance.
We watch Grace find a trident and duck behind some crates and bins just as Jean walks into the horn. I suck in my breath and hold it, hoping that Jean doesn't find Grace. Jean takes a few steps towards the stack of crates and bins.
I can't take it. I grab a stone from the ground and launch it towards the horn. It hits the side with a bang, causing all three Careers to look around, confused. Jean runs out of the cornucopia and looks up at Liam and Brendan.
"What was that?!"
Both boys shrug, and Brendan says, "Dunno. It sounded like something hit the horn."
"Like what?"
While the three tributes are having their conversation, Grace takes her chance to get out. She races out of the horn like it was on fire and sprints towards us.
"There!" Liam suddenly shouts as he stands up, pointing at Grace.
"Get her!" Jean yells as she starts chasing after her. Liam and Brendan start climbing down from the horn.
Tai and I stand up as Grace reaches us and hands Tai the trident. She gives me one of the packs, then we start to run back the way we came.
Behind us, we hear Liam and Brendan start shouting and the clanging of metal on metal. I look over my shoulder and see that Jean has stopped chasing us and is running back to the cornucopia, where Liam and Brendan are locked in combat with Jarus Palmer and Iona Flourisha. I wonder how they got there. They must've been watching and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
I turn back and follow Tai and Grace away from the fight.
Iona Flourisha's P.O.V. (D11)
Jarus and I run into the clearing as soon as Jean goes after the other tributes. Brendan is already down from the roof, but Liam is still working on getting down. I tell Jarus to get Brendan. Then I go after Liam.
I catch hold of Liam's foot and tug so hard that he looses his grip on the horn and falls onto his back. A yelp escapes him as he hits the ground. He rolls over just in time to avoid getting decapitated by one of my swords. Then he staggers into a standing position while trying to get to the entrance of the horn at the same time.
Before he can enter the horn, I catch up with him and tackle him to the ground. We struggle to get on top of each other until I feel a sudden pain on my cheek from a rock Liam has just smashed into it.
I feel him escape from me as everything blurs for a moment. I shake my head out of the daze and get back to my feet. By now, Liam is already in the horn.
I run to the opening of the cornucopia and crash into Liam. He drops one of the swords he was carrying, but quickly bends down to pick it back up. I grab a handful of his hair as he tries to come back up. Then I knee him in the gut.
He falls down by the wall of the horn, clutching where I kicked him. Grinning, I kick him again, and again. His whole body jolts with every kick I give him. When I feel he's had enough of it, I prepare to give him the final blow with my swords raised over my head.
I am interrupted from what I'm about to do when Jean drives a dagger into the back of my shoulder. I scream in pain and drop my swords behind me.
Jean grabs the sword Liam had dropped and tosses it to Brendan.
"Brendan, catch!"
Brendan dives for the weapon and uses it to block one of Jarus's attacks. If Brendan didn't have the sword to protect him, Jarus would've killed him just now.
I turn back to Jean. She has both of my swords and has them pointed at me, fury in her eyes. I growl at her. She only takes a step closer, raising the swords as she does so.
"Jarus!" I shout, "Help!"
It's the only thing I can do. Jarus hears me and kicks Brendan in the side. Brendan goes down on his knees, holding his side and gasping, while Jarus races to me.
He is almost here when I see a glint of steel out of the corner of my eye. I involuntarily drop backwards to the ground, causing the dagger to dig further into my shoulder. Jean's swords pass through the air above me, right where my neck was a moment ago.
Jarus jumps over me and slices one of his swords at Jean's arm. He cuts a long gash down her left arm with the tip of his sword. Jean drops the sword she was holding in that hand, but she still has the one in her right hand. Her attention is now turned on him.
I roll onto my stomach and reach for the dagger in the back of my shoulder. My whole shoulder is numb and throbbing. Blood soaks through my jacket. With one harsh tug, I pull the knife out. More blood gushes from my shoulder and pours down my back. My head starts to spin from the loss of blood.
The last thing I see before the blackness takes over is Jarus fighting with Jean...
Jarus Palmer's P.O.V. (D11)
I am knocked against the wall of the golden horn. I notice that it's only me and Jean that are fighting now. Liam is lying next to the horn, half passed out, Brendan is still on his knees in the grass, and Iona is lying unconscious in a puddle of blood a meter away from me. It's up to me to determine the outcome of this fight.
I hold up my swords to form an X just in time to block a vicious swing of Jean's sword. The sound of metal clanging against metal echoes in the air around us. We press our blades together for a moment, before I break away.
Before Jean can do anything, I crouch down and slice both swords across her legs. She cries out in anger and pain as she tumbles over. Blood seeps through her black pants to make the fabric look shiny in the sun. She tries to stand, but fails.
I try to decide if I should kill her or just leave her. At first, I consider just leaving her and helping Iona, but then I thought of how mad Iona would be when she finds out we didn't kill any of the Careers. I didn't want this whole ambush to be for nothing. Another chance like this might never come by me again in the Games. It's decided then.
I step over to Jean and raise my swords over her chest. She desperately tries to crawl away, but she only makes it about a foot from where she started before she gives up. Then I bring both swords down on her. One of them goes right through her heart and the other wedges itself in her lower ribs. Jean's eyes glaze over with death as she stares off into nothingness.
BOOM!
"Jean?" Brendan coughs.
I turn to him after I pull my swords out of Jean's corpse, "Sorry, man."
His eyes are locked on Jeans body as I approach him. I don't want to kill him or Liam also, but I can't have them following me either.
When he sees me getting closer, Brendan forces himself to stand, his sword hanging loosely in his hand. He takes a swing at me, but I easily sidestep it and he stumbles forward, falling onto the ground. I come up to him and kick him in the side again. Then I knock him over the head with the hilt of one of my swords. He falls limply onto the grass, unconscious.
Now I turn to Liam. I don't need to do anything to him. He's out cold now, so I dart into the horn and find some medical supples. Then I come back out and tend to Iona's shoulder.
Now for another decision. Do I stay at the cornucopia or just drag Iona away from here? After some thought, I decided it would be best to stay here where there are more supples to help Iona and stuff.
So I carefully drag Iona into the shelter of the cornucopia and also find some rope. Then I go back outside and use the rope to tie up Brendan and Liam, back-to-back. Then I haul them into the horn too. Now, I have to wait for Iona to wake up so she can help decide what to do with these two.
