Day Five (Morning)
Tai Hosman's P.O.V. (D4)
I wake up when the island starts to lower itself in the sky to align itself with the cornucopia island. I look over to where the jungle island is. Or was... Where is it?!
I sit up suddenly and shake the others awake, "Guys, the jungle island is gone!"
"What?!" Grace exclaims as she wakes up and starts searching the sky for the other island, but fails to find it.
"It collapsed last night, you guys," Delinia says as she starts to cook up breakfast, "You two were asleep when it happened. By the way, you also missed the Death Toll. Jean and Blake are dead."
"So now all the other tributes are either on this island or the cornucopia island! More likely on this island since nobody wants to be around the Careers," Grace says, "Comforting knowledge."
I go through the remaining tributes in my head. If Jean is dead, that leaves Liam and Brendan as the last Careers. Iona and Jarus are still out there somewhere. I haven't seen the twins since the Bloodbath, but their faces haven't shown up at the Death Toll yet. Jason and Nathan are on this island. The Willow siblings are on this island too. Then that leaves Mason and that blind girl somewhere, and us. Fifteen tributes remaining.
"What should we do today?" Delinia asks.
"I'd suggest staying put. We shouldn't risk moving around the island with all these other tributes here now," Grace says.
We all nod our agreement and start eating.
Mason Paits's P.O.V. (D7)
I scan the ground with my eyes until they land on Kaya and Dean at the other end of the campsite. Kaya is sound asleep, while her brother lays awake, fiddling with a twig. Every so often, he glances at Brenda and me. I don't trust him or his sister. He wouldn't even agree to me taking first watch last night, so he insisted on staying up too. So he obviously doesn't trust us, why should I trust him. I have been making sure they haven't gotten too close to me or Brenda.
"Look," Dean finally speaks up, "You don't have to worry about me killing Brenda or anything. I wouldn't do that. I'm the one that has to worry about one of you killing Kaya."
I look at Brenda. She is also sound asleep beside me, "I am only going to kill one of you if you try anything stupid."
"It's settled then. We won't kill each other unless we kill each other," he says sarcastically.
I roll my eyes, "How about you just keep a good distance between us until tomorrow, mate?"
"So, we're splitting up tomorrow?"
"Yes, I don't want to worry about you anymore."
He shrugs, "Whatever."
Suddenly Brenda wakes up and whispers, "There's someone coming!"
I pull my throwing axe from my belt and prepare to attack. Dean finds his blowgun and Brenda loads her bow.
"What's going on?!" Kaya exclaims loudly as she wakes up.
Dean and I turn to her with wide eyes. She didn't just shout, did she? Two sets of footsteps start to close in on our position.
"Great job, Kaya!" I whisper harshly.
"I'm sorry! I didn't know!"
Before I turn around, somebody leaps through a bush and dives into me roughly. I cry out in surprise as we hit the ground.
"Mason!" Brenda shrieks.
"Get back, Brenda!" I say through gritted teeth as I throw a punch at the person's face.
Then I get a look at who it is. Jason Wolfe. Nathan comes into the clearing just then, calling for Jason. Dean tackles him.
Jason slams his fists down at my face. My eyes go wide and I move my head to the side. His fists crash into the dirt beside my head.
I grab his jacket and throw him off me. Then I stand up and grab him by the neck, slamming him against a tree. He coughs for air as I tighten my grip on him. I can feel the blood pulsing in his neck as he tries to push my hand away.
I'm so concentrated on what I'm doing that I don't notice Jason raise his leg and kick it into my stomach. I stagger backwards, clutching my gut. Jason rubs his neck while he kicks me again, knocking me to the ground. I grunt when I make contact with the ground.
"Mason!" Brenda shouts as she kneels beside me, "Are you okay?"
"My axe..." I choke out, "Find it."
Jason grabs my shoulders and lifts me up. Then he throws me against a tree and kicks me two more times in the ribs. I watch him find his spear in the bush and come back to me.
"Mason!" Brenda shouts as she tosses my throwing axe at me, "Catch!"
I catch the axe by the cool metal handle. Not a second passes after it reaches my fingers before I throw it full force at Jason. There is a sickening sound as my axe finds it's mark.
Blood splatters the ground by my face, then there is a thud when he hits the ground.
BOOM!
"Mason? Are you okay?"
I cough, "Yeah. Nice timing with the axe."
"Guys, Dean needs help!" Kaya shouts.
I grunt as I pull myself back into a standing position. I think one of my ribs is broken. It feels like I'm being stabbed in the chest with a knife every time I take a breath.
I look over to where Dean is fighting with Nathan. Dean has a long gash along the side of his face and Kaya can't do anything but watch him fight Nathan.
I bend down and pull my axe from Jason's chest. Then I try to get a good shot for Nathan, but I can't hit him without risking hitting Dean either.
"Dean, get out of the way!" I shout.
Before he can get away, Nathan grabs him and holds him in a headlock.
"Get back! Or else he's dead!" Nathan warns.
"No!" Kaya screams as she lunges herself at him. He kicks her away with his boot. She flies back and hits a tree.
Nathan pulls out a dagger now and holds it above Dean's chest, "I'll let him go if you promise not to follow me." He points the dagger at Brenda and I, "And you two drop your weapons."
Brenda drops her bow and quiver by her feet and kicks them farther away. I also drop my axe reluctantly.
"Alright, that's more like it," Nathan says as he backs away from us a little bit. His lips form an evil smile, "See you around."
He raises the dagger and plunges it into Dean's chest.
"NO!" Kaya shrieks as Nathan flees from the scene.
Dean falls over as Kaya runs to his side. I go down on my knees, but Brenda just stays where she is, listening.
"I-I'm sorry, Kaya," Dean whispers.
"Dean! Stay with me!"
I know that there is nothing we can do for him now. His canon will be going off any moment now.
Dean looks at Brenda and me, "Please stay with her..."
Brenda nods, "We will."
Then Dean closes his eyes and his head flops to the side.
BOOM!
"No!" Kaya sobs.
Brenda approaches her and puts a hand on her shaking shoulder, "We've gotta go, Kaya. I'm sorry."
A hovercraft materializes in the sky above us and the leaves on the surrounding trees twist around from the wind of the propellers. We step aside as a claw drops and picks up Jason. It pulls him back up into the hovercraft. Then the claw returns for Dean.
"Kaya, we have to move!" I shout as I pull her and Brenda away.
The claw wraps itself around Dean and lifts him slowly up to the hovercraft. Kaya chases the hovercraft, screaming for Dean to come back, until it disappears.
I take Brenda's hand and lead her over to Kaya. I find her kneeling by a large tree, holding Dean's blowgun.
"Kaya, come back to the camp," Brenda says.
"I'm not going back there!"
I sigh, "Well, wait here. I'll be back with our supplies. I guess we can find somewhere else to camp."
Kaya sniffs, "Alright."
Brendan Hankson's P.O.V. (D2)
I sit beside Liam inside the horn. Jarus and Iona are talking quietly at the other end of the cornucopia. I wonder what they're planning. Maybe just a hunt on the forest island. I wonder how we would do that though. I mean, Iona would obviously have to stay here because of her shoulder, but who would stay here with her to guard the horn? Jarus can't stay and let Liam and I go out hunting, because he can't guarantee that we'll come back. And Jarus probably wouldn't agree to one of us staying here and one of us going with him. I don't think he would trust either of us to stay with Iona.
I rest my head against the wall. If we can't go hunting, then what else are we going to do? Just wait for people to come to us, I guess. Liam must be thinking the same thing, because he finally stands up and asks, "Okay, so what's the plan?"
"Ummm we aren't sure," Jarus replies, "We were thinking about going hunting."
Just as I predicted. Now I talk, "Yeah, but who's going and who's staying?"
Jarus looks at Iona, "Well, Iona says she can stay here and I can go with you guys."
"Are you crazy? What's she gonna do if somebody comes here?" Liam says.
"We don't think anyone will try coming. Unless somebody is already on this island and is waiting for us to leave, how else will the other tributes know we ever left?" Jarus points out, shrugging his shoulders, "Plus, there are only nine other tributes out there."
"I guess you have a point," I say, "Alright, I'm in."
"Me too," Liam says.
"Okay, come on then," Jarus says as he finds is swords and walks out of the horn.
Brendan and I walk out behind him with our swords. We start off towards the forest island, since the jungle island is gone. The other island is probably packed with tributes.
I'm still not happy with teaming up with Jarus and Iona. We didn't really have a choice though. Liam made the right decision. Honestly, if I were Jarus, I wouldn't have given us that chance. I know he doesn't trust us.
Liam leans over to me and whispers, "Wait until we get to the bridge to take him out."
I nod. I'm glad he already wants to kill Jarus. I don't know how much longer we would've been able to stay with them before he decided to kill us.
"Here we are," Jarus says when we reach the bridge.
He turns around to make sure we're still with him. I think he suspects something.
"You first," he jerks his thumb towards the bridge.
I look at Liam to see if he has any reaction. He just smiles slightly and walks onto the bridge without complaint.
"You too," Jarus says to me.
I nod and follow Liam onto the metal bridge. I hear Jarus step on behind us. Does Liam still want to go through with this? Suddenly, I hear Jarus drawing his swords from his sheath behind me.
"So," Jarus says, "Aren't you going to attack me or something?"
Liam stops walking and looks over his shoulder at me, his eyes asking, how did he find out?
Jarus laughs when he sees Liam's face, "Oh, you didn't think I heard you back there, Liam?"
"What are you talking about?" Liam asks, trying to act confused, "I thought we were going hunting."
"Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about, kid. You told Brendan to wait until we reached the bridge to take me out. We're here, so aren't you gonna kill me?"
"I will if you want me to," Liam says.
"I never should've trusted you two! I thought we would make a good team. I should've killed you when I had the chance!" Jarus yells, pointing his swords at us.
"How were we supposed to know that you wouldn't kill us anyways?" I ask as I also point my sword at him.
"I didn't want it to come to this, but if I must, I'll have to kill you!" Jarus says darkly. Then he lunges at me.
The bridge rocks as we start fighting with our swords. I block his strokes first, then I strike. I thrust my sword straight at his stomach, but he turns to the side, avoiding it. Then I swing my sword at him again, but when I do so, he blocks it and kicks my knee where it had been broken in the last games.
I grunt and fall on the hard, metal bridge holding my leg. Then Liam steps up to attack. He crashes his sword against Jarus's several times. The next time their blades meet, they press them against each other, glaring at one another. Suddenly, Jarus drives his knee into Liam's stomach.
Liam steps back, removing his sword from Jarus's. Then Jarus kicks him again in the chest, sending him over the side of the railing!
"Liam!" I cry as he goes over.
Jarus turns to me with wicked eyes, "Your turn."
Hey, I just wanted to remind you to hit that star if you liked this chapter. Also comment if you like!
