Day Eight (Morning)

Tai Hosman's P.O.V. (D4)

I crouch silently behind a tree. Mason and Brenda are sleeping a few meters away. Mason is resting against a tree with his arm wrapped around Brenda. A funky-looking pair of sunglasses are in her hands. That must be what was in the package. I assume they can make her see. That's perfect. Now she will be able to see me. If only I could get those glasses...

Brenda's bow and quiver are resting against another tree across the campsite. Mason's axe, however, is on the grass beside him.

I don't thinks it's a wise move to go for the glasses, but I can get her weapons at least. I start to creep around the tree, being careful to make no sounds. Finally, I reach the back of the tree that Brenda's weapon is leaning against. I reach my arm around the tree and grab the quiver. That's all she needs. Without the arrows, she can't shoot. I cringe and freeze as the quiver scrapes across the rough bark of the tree.

Brenda stirs a bit. Then her eyes whip open. My heart stops for a second, then it palpitates to make up for the lost beat. She quickly puts on the sunglasses and starts to look around. Then her eyes meet mine. She immediately starts to nudge Mason awake. I take the quiver and fling it as hard as I can in the opposite direction of the camp. It hits a tree far away, causing all of the arrows to scatter.

When I look back, Mason is awake and going for his axe. That's when I charge. Brenda jumps in front of me and I crash into her. I get right back up after we fall onto the grass. Brenda is still working on getting up when I am already running for Mason. Mason turns around and swings at my head at the same time. I duck it and jab my trident at him. He sidesteps.

Then I am pulled back by Brenda and pushed away. I recover and rush right back at Mason. Mason is about to throw his axe, but decides not to when he realizes that I'm too close. I crash into him and slam him against a tree.

"You killed Delinia!" I shout in his face, anger filling my voice.

I toss my trident onto the ground and proceed to hit him against the tree again and throw punches at his face, each time getting harsher. Blood starts gushing from his nose and he drops his axe by his feet. He starts to try fighting back, but I just keep slamming him against the tree and punching, my anger and hurt fueling me. I can feel him starting to get heavier in my grip as he starts to pass out.

"Mason!"

Suddenly, there is a horrific pain that appears in my right shoulder. Warm blood starts to run down my shoulder and back, soaking my jacket and making it heavy. I fall onto my side, gasping. Mason also collapses beside me, bruises starting to appear on his face.

Brenda stands above me, my blood covering her hands. I force myself to look at my shoulder. A knife has wedged itself in the back of my shoulder. I hadn't noticed a knife anywhere in the camp. Maybe it was in a pack. If I try to move my whole right arm, the blade shifts around, causing sharp, stabbing pain to shoot through my shoulder and back. I cry out as I try to move it, only making more blood pour out. This is the worst thing I've ever felt. Brenda's is running to where I threw her quiver now.

I use my left arm to lift myself back up. The weight of my blood-soaked jacket pulls me back down. Every breath I take hurts. I can't take off my jacket without taking the knife out first. With a deep breath, I reach back with my left hand and rip the knife out harshly, letting out a scream. Then I rip my jacket off. Now it's a little easier to get up. I grab my trident as I get up. My right arm hangs limply at my side. I almost want to tear it off. It's useless now.

I reach Mason. He's still conscious, but not enough to fight. Just enough to see me kill him. To see me get my revenge I had said I would get. I told him that he was going to pay for what he did. I'm not going to go against my word now. I raise my trident above my head. He tries to feel around for his axe. He finds it, keeping his eyes locked on me, but he can't lift it. He looks at me, his eyes pleading me not to do what I'm about to do. Then he closes his eyes, knowing that it's useless.

"Goodbye," I say.

Brenda Long's P.O.V. (D7)

I run to my quiver, grabbing my bow along the way. I reach the area Tai had thrown my quiver, but the arrows are scattered everywhere. I frantically search through the grass and leaves, glancing over at Tai several times.

He screams as he pulls the knife out and takes off his jacket. His shirt is stained red with blood. He has his trident and is starting to walk back to Mason. Mason is trying to lift his axe, but he's too woozy.

I start searching even faster. Finally, I find one of the silver arrows in the grass. Thank goodness for these glasses! I grab the arrow, my hands shaking as I notch it into the string. This is the first time I have used my bow since I got the glasses. It feels like I'm learning how to use it all over again.

I aim it at Tai. It doesn't feel right. I can see everything, the trees, bushes, ground, Mason, Tai, the packs. It's all too distracting. I start to feel overwhelmed with a fear that I can't do this. Tears start to form in my eyes at the thought of failing. Then I know what to do. It might be crazy, and it could cost Mason's life, but I have to take the risk. There's no way I can shoot Tai with all of these new distractions.

I reach up and slide my glasses onto my forehead, so they aren't over my eyes anymore, drowning out the distractions. I have to do this without my eyes. I raise my bow again and listen, now feeling more confident and determined. I listen for any sounds from Tai, and then one comes.

"Goodbye," Tai's voice says.

I immediately position my bow where I heard the voice. Then I release. The string twangs, and the feathers of the arrow brush my cheek as it passes. The arrow whizzes through the air and makes an impact. I quickly slide the glasses back over my eyes.

More blood comes out of Tai's back as he falls to his knees, coughing up blood. I run back to the campsite as Tai falls forward, breathing heavily. Tears fill his eyes as he whispers, "I'm sorry, Del-"

BOOM!

I kneel beside Mason and start to help him sit up. He is still looking at Tai and at the arrow sticking into his back. Tai's trident rests on the grass beside him, stained with his bloody handprint. He was the first person that I've seen die since my parents. And I was the one to kill him. I can't help feeling awful. Even though I've already made a kill in the Games, this one makes me feel even more guilty since I can see it all. And I can't imagine how he felt after Mason had killed Delinia. That must've been awful for him. I couldn't just let him kill Mason though.

"You alright?" Mason asks quietly.

I didn't even realize I was crying until he asked. I wipe my face and nod, "This is just so horrible!"

Mason wraps his arms around me and gives a light squeeze, "It'll be over soon. Don't worry."

I know that he's just trying to calm me down. I know that everything is not fine. I know that it'll be over soon. That's the part I'm scared of, because I know I won't win. I'm just thankful that I wasn't in this alone, that I had Mason with me.

Liam Fledger's P.O.V. (D2)

I wake up with a jolt when a canon shot rips through the air. Brendan is already at the mouth of the horn, looking around. The boom was pretty close. I stand up and walk over to him, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

"It came from over there," Brendan points to the woods to our right, "There was some screaming too."

"I guess this leaves seven of us left," I say.

"Ugh! I'm so sick of waiting for this to end!" Brendan says impatiently, "What is it? Day eight? I think it's about time we put an end to this."

"What? You want to go find some tributes?" I question and he nods.

"I think we need to thin out the crowd a little more, so to speak."

I sigh and think for a moment. It would be nice to have less tributes. But who are we going after? I guess there isn't a way of choosing. We run into who we run into.

"Okay," I say, "Let's go after we eat."
