Chapter Twenty

Chapter Twenty

Summer had finally begun and I was speeding down the road towards the new and improved Star Court Mall.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, I finally got my licence. I had gotten it the first week of the summer holidays because Steve was pressing my ass about it.

Listening to Just Another Day, by Oingo Boingo, I was high on life. It was finally the Summer of 1985 and I was so happy. Steve had graduated and is now working at Scoops Ahoy, in the new Star Court Mall.

My windows were down as I drove towards the mall, banging my hands on the steering wheel in my new 1984 ford, a gift from my Dad as I had passed. I glanced at the police scanner that I have stolen. Even though nothing happened six months after the tragic innocent, I still like to know what's going on.

Mike had been spending a lot of time in my house and it pissed Dad off greatly. I get that El and Mike are boyfriend and girlfriend, but they are always constantly kissing and in El's room which she can't leave just yet.

I looked out my mirror and saw flashing lights and it was my Dad's SUV. I sighed in annoyance and pulled over. I rolled down my window and I waited for my Dad to come and tell me off for speeding. I have a bad habit of spending just a little over the limit, but only a little. And by little, I mean 10km over.

My Dad arrives with a serious look on his face as he's in the police uniform.

"Juno." He gives me a look, leaning on my car.

I smiled innocently at him. "Hi, Dad! Nice day, isn't it? Fancy seeing you on the roads—"

"Juno," Dad cuts me off sternly. "This is the third time this month I've pulled you over. You just got your driver's license too, don't make me take it away from you."

I pouted. "I'm sorry Dad, I was just in a rush to see—"

"Your boyfriend?" Dad raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I know. But, kid, you gotta slow down and stick to the limit. You're lucky I'm not giving you any tickets."

"Coz you know you'd have to pay for them." I sweetly say, battering my eyelashes at him.

"No, I'd make you get a job." Dad glared. "This is your final warning, Juno. Don't speed again. Got it?"

I sighed loudly. "Okay, Dad. I won't speed."

"And you're lucky it's me." Dad rolled his eyes. "Be responsible, Juno. I swear to God if I find you in a car crash, I will kill you if the car crash hasn't."

"Dad!" I exclaimed, annoyed. "Okay, I get it. Can I please go now? It's getting dark." I looked out the window to see the sun was setting.

"And turn down your music!" Dad bewilders, noticing how loud it was playing.

"Okay!" I fired back, turning down my music. "Bye Dad, I'll see you at home."

"All right." Dad backs off and walks away from my car, I smiled happily and turned up the music just a wee bit before driving off towards the mall.

︾

I entered the mall feeling good about myself. I passed by the busy sea of people, the Star Court Mall is really popping off. But, due to that, downtown stores and going out of business and I know some people are mad about it which Dad is having to deal with.

I practical bounce towards Steve's work and seeing him in his cute sailor outfit makes me giggle as he stands at the register.

"Ahoy my fine lady!" Steve greets me happily as he spots me, I entered the back counter and wrapped my arms around him.

"Hi, Stevie." I smiled, finally happy being able to see him after not seeing him for a day.

"Robin! You're on." Steve called and dragged me to the back room where Robin was, her legs were kicked up on the table as she relaxed sitting, reading a magazine.

She glanced up. "Are you kidding me? I only had a five-minute break."

Robin was the same year as me and she went to my school, Robin gave me a nervous smile and I smiled back. I liked Robin, she was cool.

"Steve, she can have a longer break," I tell him. "Just work and I'll be back here with Robin."

"But I wanna be with you," Steve complained, giving me those big puppy dog eyes. Ugh, he knows I can't resist him.

"It's fine, but I get a longer break next time, got it?" Robin tells Steve sternly and Steve nods, looking at me the entire time. Robin gets up and goes to the front, leaving us alone.

"Now, where were we?" Steve grinned and pulled me in for a long kiss. "That's better. I haven't seen you all day. What's up?"

He pulled me over to the chair and I sat on his lap, wrapping an arm around him so I can see him. "Oh, nothing. I had to babysit El and Mike while Dad was out for a bit, that man seriously needs to talk to them if he doesn't trust them by themself."

"Why? They're only kids, what do you think will happen by themselves?" Steve raised an eyebrow and I give him a look. "Oh, right. But, they're too naive for that, especially El."

"Dad's not worried about El, he's worried about Mike and what he'll do." I continued, rolling my eyes. "Little did he know what I did when I was that age."

"Oh, yeah? What did you do at that age?" Steve asked, cocking his head. "Wait, who did you lose your V card to?"

I pursed my lips, not really knowing if I should answer. "No one. No one important."

"Come on, tell me." Steve presses on urgently.

"Uh... Jason." I say casually, biting my lower lip at his reaction. Jason is a high-class Jock in Hawkins. He's known for his popularity as the basketball captain. And he's a senior, along with me. I never spoke to Jason again after that.

"Jason Carver?" Steve stuttered out. "No way you fucked Jason—"

"Steve!" I cupped a hand over his mouth.

"He's a total douchebag!" Steve pulls away from me. "Why would you—"

"It isn't that deep," I tell him. "We were both stupid teenagers who were horny, okay? Besides, I never liked him. At all. A week later he ended up dating Chrissy Cunningham."

"Yeah, I remember her." He scoffed. "Wanna be a cheerleader—"

"Steve, shut up." I pushed his shoulder slightly. "Those people are in the past, we're never gonna see them again, okay? Just, let it go. Who was your first fuck?"

"This random girl, I can't remember her name." He shrugged.

"Come on, tell me. I told you mine." I pressed, looking right at him in the eyes. "Steve, don't be like that."

"Okay, fine. You were my first." Steve admitted quietly and my mouth dropped.

"I'm sorry, what?" I exclaimed and he shushed me. "Sorry, sorry. It's just... You seemed so confident in what you were doing. I didn't expect me to be your first time."

"Fake it till you make it, right?" Steve grinned sheepishly at me. "Besides, I—"

"Hey, dingus! Your children are here!" Robin called loudly from the front and he groaned as I got off his lap. We walked towards the front, he swings a towel over his shoulder and looked at Max, Lucas, Will, and Mike, he was annoyed.

These guys have been sneaking into the movie theatre all summer holidays to get into free movies through the works passageway. Steve's getting annoyed at it by now.

"Again? Seriously?" Steve asked the kids and Mike slammed his hand down on the bell before he made motions for him to come in the back. The kids all rushed in and once it was clear, he allowed the kids to leave through the back. "And remember, if anyone finds out about this—"

"We're dead!" The kids chimed in at the same time, walking quickly away from us down the long hallway.

"Kids these days, am I right?" I joked, turning to Steve who was already looking at me with an adoring smile that made my heart melt. He shuts the door and pushes me against it, kissing me gently.

"You are seriously the best thing that happened to me." Steve murmured sweetly, his hand cupping my neck as I looked at him. I was too in awe to even say anything, but Robin had interrupted us.

"Are you guys done? Can I have my break now?" Robin questioned, and Steve backed away from me, rolling his eyes.

"Yeah, sure," Steve mumbled before putting on his little sailor hat and walking towards the counter while Robin took her previous seat.

"Awe, little Stevie back to work." I teased and walked over to the window that was in between us.

"I swear, Jun—" he was cut off by the lights in the mall completely switching off which made me visibly panic. My face drained, and my mouth was wide as I get flashbacks of all the Demo-dogs rushing toward me and Steve again. "Oh, that's weird." Steve comments.

Steve turns to the switch on the wall and switches it up and down rapidly. "That isn't gonna work, dingus," Robin tells him as she was right next to me. "Hey, you okay?" She turned to me.

I shake out of whatever PTSD I had and looked over at Robin with a bright smile. "I'm fine."

"Oh really?" Steve asked like a child and continues to rapidly switch it up and down. And just like that, the lights switch-on which made me frown. Every single mall light was back up and running. "Let there be light."

"So... Everyone's just gonna ignore that?" I asked, I didn't even realise I was gripping the counter, my heart racing.

"Well, nothing bad happened, so... Yeah." Steve nodded his head and went back to serving his customers.

Robin closes the door to the counter slightly, turning to me. "Are you sure you're okay? You looked like you were gonna pass out."

"I'm fine, Robin." I brushed it off as nothing. "Just... Scared of the dark."

"Oh, yeah," Robin nodded before going back to her seat. "So how long have you and dingus been dating?"

"Officially... 6 months." I smiled, turning to her and leaning on the counter while opening the doors again. "But, unofficially, two years."

"Two years?" Robin asked, bewildered. "I never thought Steve was a relationship type of guy, but, here he is."

"Yeah, we met at a party and was strictly doing hookups only." I laughed at the memories. "I made a rule that we aren't friends and we aren't dating. But, we didn't like that, so we settled for friends with benefits for a while before he confessed his undying love for me—"

"I did not!" Steve turned around once he was done with his customer.

"Shut up, Steve, I'm telling the story," I point at him, giving him a smile. "I didn't like him back then. Maybe a little bit."

"A little bit? You were all over me—"

"Stop telling lies," I complained. "Anyways. I had a tough choice to make, stop being friends with him after he did something stupid, or try things out with him. And I did. I wanted it to be exclusive, low-key, no one really knew. And eventually, things just happened."

"Wow. So romantic." Robin rolled her eyes but smiled genuinely. "But like, seriously, I didn't really know you guys were hooking up two years ago. I mean, I thought it was weird that Juno Hopper and Steve Harrington were hanging out, but now I understand."

I smiled at her. "Yeah, so what's your love life like? Got anyone special?"

She blushes at looked away from me. "No. I'm still single as ever sadly."

"It's okay, Robin, your time will come," I tell her and she gave me a smile.

"Thanks, Juno."

Steve sent me a warm smile, and I smiled back, wondering how I got so lucky to have someone like him.
