5SOS Racist, Homophobic & Sexist?
I've come across a post on Tumblr which I would like to respond to. Italics is her, bold is me. Bc you know, IM BOLD :D
sexist:
heartbreak girl: people have been suggesting the lyrics of heartbreak girl are sexist.
I don't think they're sexist, I just think they're stupid.
the lyrics people have been mentioning are “and i’m stuck in the friendzone again”. while i don’t agree that this is sexist in any way, many people have been upset by this. i personally don’t understand how this is sexist at all because the technical definition of sexism is “prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.” i don’t see at all how this discriminates against women at all? this term is a term used on men and women, not just women.
The friendzone is a stupid concept in the first place. The girl has a choice whether or not she wants to be with the guy. It doesn't matter if you're nice to her, mean to her, gentle with her, does not matter. In the end, all that matters is if the girl wants to date with you. I dont know if that's sexist or not, but I'm gonna go with just stupid lyrics and stupid concept for a song.
out of my limit: the lyrics people are upset over in this song are “‘cause I never wanna be that guy, who doesn’t even get a taste. no more having to chase, to win that prize.” people have assumed that the “prize” is sex. i don’t agree with this at all. this song was written years ago and the song is about a girl. the girl is the prize, not sex. now whether that upsets you, that’s your decision. to me, this is a more understandable reason to get upset over heartbreak girl, but still i don’t really read into these kinds of things and get upset over them.
I agree with you on this one, good job bro.
michael assigning gender roles: i don’t even want to talk about this because i think it’s completely ridiculous. michael posted this photo on his instagram and people were complaining that he assigned gender roles to the drinks. i really don’t understand why people were so upset about this like ??? i’m a girl and in no way offended, but to each their own.
See, you say "im a girl and in no way offended." that doens't mean no one else is. I'm offended, and that does matter. Obviously other people have been offended, so I think it's quite stupid that you put that in there. As for the post, Michael should have just no posted it. It's good to express your opinion, but his opinion is rude and SEXIST. So he is sexist.
enforcing rape culture:
"i would just stare at her creepily": honestly, nothing bothered me more than this. how can you even accuse someone of this for making a small comment? luke was asked how he would approach a girl in an interview (i can’t find the interview but if anybody links me to it i’ll put it in here) and he says “i’d just stare at her creepily.” people have taken this and twisted it to make it seem like he meant it as enforcing rape culture. this is honestly ridiculous and i can’t even begin to understand why people would even accuse someone of this. you can clearly tell he meant this as a whole “i wouldn’t know what to say to her”, not “i’m planning on raping her later”. to even say this about anybody because they make a comment completely unrelated to rape is pretty horrible. this is the equivalent to saying if you stared at a cute boy in class you’re enforcing rape culture and that is completely ridiculous.
I don't think Luke meant that as in "rape." so he's fine. But yeah, you were right on this one. I dont have much more to say.
michael’s rape joke: this is something i could understand that people were upset over. in a keek, michael said calum was going to “rape him later”. i won’t defend them for this because it was inconsiderate of him to say this, but i will say that i have heard many many many teenage boys use this as a joke, so it’s not saying that 5sos are “supporters of rape” or that they “enforce rape culture”. that is a very strong accusation just because they made similar jokes that many normal, average teenage boys make everyday. i am in no way excusing them for this joke, but i do think saying they enforce rape culture is very inconsiderate.
In no way is it okay to joke about rape. Never. No, it doesn't mean they're supporters of rape, but they're making fun of girls and guys who actually go through rape and are horrified afterwords. That's what joking about rape is. Rape is not a joke, it is never a joke. Dont joke about rape. And the fact that you added that average teenage boys make these jokes everyday DISGUSTS me.
homophobia/racism:
luke’s use of the word “gay”: people were pointing out old facebook statuses where luke used the word gay, but the funny thing is, i have yet to see a screenshot. i am a very strong believer in gay rights, as one of my best friends is gay. i personally don’t like when people use the word gay as a derogatory, but even my gay friend uses that word. i bet you could log onto twitter right now and search it and see about 43543587 teenagers using the word. i do not support the use of the word as a derogatory term, nor am i excusing the boys for using this word, but my point was, there is no point of accusing 5sos of being homophobic because they use the word. i’ve heard them use this word in a few keeks as well, but just because you use the word does NOT make you homophobic. even i have used the word back in middle school when sadly, it was a “trend”. i would prefer if the boys didn’t use this word (and they haven’t publicly in over a year), but just because they use this word doesn’t make them homophobic. if they were homophobic, they would not have done all this: here , here (not saying this fan is gay, simply saying if they were supposedly “homophobic”, they would be afraid to do this)i’m aware these are both ashton, i haven’t seen anything else from other boys.
Nothing is wrong saying the word "gay". It really isn't. But just like racism, it's not bad thing unless you phrase it like a bad thing. So let's say Luke said "oh yeah, he's gay." if the guy was ACTUALLY gay. Say the same sentence again, but this time, that guy isnt really gay. Maybe he's done something girly and Luke said he was gay. Now THAT is bad. Aside from that, its not bad to use the word gay, just like it's not bad to call black people black. That's their race.
You said you don't want people to use this word. but again i will say, unless they use it in a bad phrase, it's definitely okay.
racism; mexican: this bothers me so much oh my god. so basically when 5sos was at the forum, selling tickets, they had a mexican themed.. i guess we’ll call it a party. so they had a mariachi band playing their songs, a pinata, taco truck, and they were wearing sombreros. first of all, let me say, most of the people worked up about this aren’t even hispanic. i have seen MANY people on twitter claiming that they’re hispanic and it in no way offended them. let’s talk about george lopez. he had a show and in that show he has made jokes about the mexican sterotype and nobody ever, in the 5 years that show was on, nobody ever said anything. what about all the people that get mariachi bands to play for their loved ones? what about the fact that 5sos in MANY videos have put on sombreros and nobody said anything? they in no way said any racial slurs. the definition of racism is “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” in what way did 5sos ever said “we’re white so we’re going to have this mexican themed party and make fun of mexicans because we’re superior to them”. never. the boys meant absolutely no harm in this party theme and if they were racist it would be obvious. funny how the majority of the people who say they’re racist are the ones who make asian calum jokes right?
Not exactly racist, well sort of. They're basically saying that Mexican parties are like that. This what white people believe Mexicans are, which being a Mexican myself, can tell you we are not. We don't really hire mariachi bands (most of the time), the pinata thing is real, but we dont eat crunchy tacos. WE EAT SOFT TACOS, THE REAL TACOS, and we don't really fucking wear sombreros everywhere. I'm worked up about this, okay? And the thing about George Lopez, well he had the RIGHT jokes on how Mexicans live. And its better coming from a Mexican himself other than 4 white boys who obviously have no idea how the real Mexican culture is like.
I keep seeing a video of them. Basically Calum pretending to be a Mexican and saying he was crossing the boarder. Okay, no. That is not okay at all and in no way funny. Coming from a Mexican that has had her uncles, aunts, grandparents and even my parents and older brother cross the boarder, that is horrid. My mum has told me various stories of her crossing the boarder to the long nights to being pulled a gun at her head while she held my older brother in her arms. Unless you've gone seen what it is, how horrible the circumstances are crossing the boarder, you just can't make those kinds of jokes.
That is all I have to say. And no, i dont hate 5sos, but I just don't agree with their opinions and actions. Do I love them any less? Sort of. But I have different opinions with everyone. So I'm gonna keep being a fan of them, but i'd rather just listen to their music more tbh
