Three
Steve soon joined the two, a slight wheeze to his breath. Eloise immediately stood, rushing over to him.
"Elle, I'm fine," he insists waving his hand slightly.
"No, you aren't. Deep breaths, Stevie," she says. "Do we need to go back home - I'll take care of you, alright?"
"No, it's fine," he sighs. "I can take care of myself, but I can't go. If walking that far caused this, I won't be able to go around Manhattan all day."
"I'm not going without you," she says sternly.
"Yes, you are. You need some time away from me, you're turning more and more into my mom rather than my twin sister."
He waves Bucky over, who comes quickly.
"Everything alright, punk?" he asks, playfully hitting him on the shoulder. As light as it was, and was intended to be, Steve's step faltered very slightly.
"Take Ellie to Manhattan, don't come back until she has a little fun," Steve says, shoving his sister into his best friend's nearly immovable body. Her skinny frame and weak muscles made her easily susceptible to being shoved or anything. Even by Steve.
"You aren't coming?" Bucky asks, shock and concern in his expression.
"I'm a little under the weather," he shrugs. "I'm serious, though."
"Yeah, yeah, not a scratch will come to your darling little sister," he says with an eye roll.
"We're twins, Bucky?" she says, looking up at her best friend.
"Ah, but I'm a whole ninety minutes older," Steve jokes. He flicks her ponytail around, then kisses the top of her head. "Be safe."
"I'll try my hardest."
-
"You and Steve really haven't been separated your whole lives?" Bucky asks, sort of astonished the two could stand each other that long. His younger twin brothers were only four, and they could barely stand being in the same room for two minutes, let alone not having anyone but each other to be friends with for thirteen, almost fourteen years.
"We don't really have any friends apart from you." she shrugged. The two had been sitting on the train for a good twenty minutes, only about ten or fifteen more and they'd be in Manhattan.
The two of them sat in silence for a while. They weren't really sure what to talk about. It had never been just Bucky and Eloise, Steve had always been there, sometimes, Eloise wasn't there at all.
"Do you know what you're gonna do in three years?"
"Not in the slightest," Bucky answers, letting out a small laugh as he hangs his head, shaking it slightly. "You? In five years?"
"I dunno either. Steve's been mentioning the military lately. That's been sitting on my head," she sighs, shaking her head slightly. "I get that he's determined and all..."
"He's more than just determined," Bucky shrugs and purses his lips lightly. "All we can do is support him and hope for the best."
"Hope we don't get drafted, at least," she sighs. Though, she couldn't get drafted, she wasn't a man. She could however, if she wanted to, join certain parts of the military.
Of course, she looked around in the certain areas, out of curiosity. She was a bit of a hypocrite. She sort of secretly had thought about joining Bletchley Park, or even the Special Operation Executives. She was fit enough to do so. Height may have been somewhat of a problem.
She wouldn't let that get in her way, however, if she did in fact end up taking that route.
"You seem stressed," Bucky says flatly.
"Wow, what an observation," she sighs. "I'm just worried about Steve."
"Don't be," he insists, putting a supportive hand on her shoulder. "He's a tough guy, he'll be fine."
"You say that now - I get home and the kitchen's on fire," she jokes, cracking a small smile. The train suddenly seemed to slow dramatically. And Bucky pulled at her hand for her to stand up. "Are you sure this is a good idea? We're probably not old enough to do this on our own."
"Oh, we're definitely not old enough to do this on our own," Bucky says. He glances back at her with a large grin. "That's why we're doing it."
A/N - As much as I love writing about their past, I'm just starting to think of ideas for the future. This was all just to portray the kind of relationship that the three have. It's not the whole basis of the story.
I actually have no idea what I'm going to do with Eloise, let her live? Have her die? I don't know.
To be honest, I'm thinking about actually just killing her. Letting her live a life where she never quite moves on from Bucky, but kind of does anyway. Like Peggy did with Steve. And if you haven't noticed already, this is basically Bucky's Peggy. The one person he wants to commit himself to, but knows he'll never really be able to do that. Especially since she'll be almost one hundred by the time they meet again, lol.
So, yeah, I may do another time skip and it'll be around the time, our Queen, Sarah Rogers dies. Damn.
I'm totally using Sarah Smiles for the next chapter.
