Chapter Sixteen

Susanna's POV

"So Joey isn't dating Rachel?" I said in pure shock of what I'd just heard. I knew Joey had no idea Brycie & I were on the other side of the mirror by the look on his face. Alan on the other hand had a goofy happy with himself grin that said him and Brycie had planned this out together.

I saw realization leap into Brycie's eyes, "Is that what you said you couldn't ever forget?" I just nodded, tears in my eyes and she came over and hugged me. "Oh no, sweetheart. Joey is single. Though I think you could change that for him."

She motioned to the window where Joey now stood alone, a puzzled look on his face. The words he spoke were barely above a whisper. "Susanna, I wish I knew what I did to upset you. God help me."

My spirit quickened and without even another word I ran out of the room and in again through the back door of the building. I stepped into the room and noticed he was leaving. "Joey! Don't go! I heard everything!"

He turned his eyes wide, "Susanna? I'm so sorry."

I made my way to him, "I'm sorry too. We both overreacted. I thought you were dating Rachel. And you thought I was dating Max, but I was just helping him plan his proposal to Madison."

Joey looked at me surprised. "Alan told me about the Max thing. You thought I was with Rachel? We are just friends, Sus. Nothing more."

"Really?" Tears were threatening to spill again, I felt silly for this whole ordeal. "I'm sorry about the jealous between us thing and the thing about the Jealous cover."

He flinched just a little at the last part, but I could see God's light shining from within him. "Its hard, but God will help me. Some of the lightbulbs have been banding together to encourage me and the rest of the band. But especially me. There's support Joey and team Joey stuff up on the internet now."

I looked him square in the eyes. "Satan will try to tear down anyone who does things for God, Joey. He doesn't want them to show God to others. You all do that with Anthem Lights. More than you may ever know."

Joey's POV

Susanna's words washed over me, and I just thought on them for a few seconds. I smiled at her, "Thanks, Susanna."

I looked over to the doorway where Alan and Brycie stood holding hands and smiling at us. Alan winked at me. So this was their doing. I'd have to thank them later.

Before any of us could say anything, Caleb came running back. "Alan, Joey. There's a reporter outside wanting to interview us. Chad's talking to them right now."

We all started walking outside, but Susanna grabbed my hand in hers and squeezed it as she whispered in my ear, "God's got this. Just glow for Him, Joe."

When we got outside, Chad was talking to the reporter saying, “We take this ministry very seriously. God has always been leading us down this path, and so we want to use what God has given us to get this message out to people who need it: ‘Your life has purpose and meaning in Christ.’ We all struggle with the idea of perfection, and we all stumble and fall, but that purpose for our lives never goes away. And God never, ever gives up on us."

It was plain to see that Chad's words touched the reporter because he didn't have many more questions. But he did ask us each a few, Susanna stood back smiling at me with encouragement flowing from her eyes to mine.

The reporter left with a thank you and we all decided to go our separate ways. But I stopped Susanna, and we decided to start planning a wedding song for Max and Madison.

Author's Note:

Just to say 'support Joey', 'team Joey', and what Chad says to the reporter are all real life things. Only thing about the Chad thing is he said it several years ago.

Sorry I've been a while updating, I hope y'all don't give up on me.
