Chapter Four

Susanna' s POV

We reached the diner in record time, or at least that's what Madison told me. Along with, "You walk too fast in boots." Which made me laugh, and I almost tripped over my boots. Anyway, back to the diner. It was a nice little place, and saying that it's theme was music would be a major understatement. The minute we walked through the door it just had a homey feel to it. And smelled like bologna frying and coffee.

Suddenly I stopped in my tracks. "Oh no. Madison..."

"Uh uh. Your not going to chicken out now, Susanna." She waggled a finger at me.

"That's not it. We got in such a rush that I forgot my guitar back at the apartment." I said biting my lip. "Maybe I can do it tomorrow."

"Hold on a sec." Madison pulled out her phone and started texting. Within less than a minute she got a message back and smiled. "Max, the owner, said you could use his guitar. It's in his office, I'll be right back."

While she was gone I took the opportunity to sit down and watch the customers. There were all sorts of people. Some elderly couples were eating breakfast. There were even some teenagers drinking fancy coffee. By that time Madison came back carrying a pretty cherry red Gibson Hummingbird guitar, with a vibrant smile. "Here ya go Sus. Play your heart out to them, let them hear what God gave you!"

I smiled feeling encouraged, yet still slightly nervous to be playing a several thousand dollar guitar, and Madison introduced me to the crowd who all looked up with smiling faces. I stepped up onto the little homemade stage and let out a deep breath and closed my eyes. Brief indecision passed as I knew exactly what to play. I started strumming and humming, and then went all out as I sang an Anthem Lights song, "Can't Get Over You". I closed my eyes and just sang and played for the Lord.

Joey's POV

I had decided to make Caleb and Kelsey's coffee run with them this morning to a little diner where they liked to go. They were okay for love birds, I guess. I'd almost forgot that this was the place where their friend Madison worked. Thoughts of Madison made me think of my encounter last night.

We passed through the doors of the diner and were greeted with the sound of a guitar. I liked to every once in a while come hear the performers that would take the stage here. The married couple went ahead and placed their order, but I stopped in my tracks.

It was her. Susanna was the one up there playing. The one that I'd help out last night. She had her cocoa and caramel colored hair pulled back in a ponytail, and her eyes were closed as she strummed and sang. She had a good voice and wasn't half bad on the guitar either. She was an intriguing one. A bit of a spitfire, with a silly side from what I could tell. What got me the most about her was she wasn't acting like I was used to girls acting around me. She would have pepper sprayed me! She acted like she didn't even know who I was, but that couldn't be because she was playing one of the song's the guys did before I joined the group.

Susanna ended the song and gave a bright smile to everyone, thanking them for listening to her. Everyone applauded. A light shone in her blue eyes, until they landed on me. Her smile dropped and her eyes got an almost sad look. She handed the guitar she'd been playing to Madison and started making her way over to me.
