Chapter Eleven
Susanna's POV
"Madi, I really need to work on finding a job down here. At least until I can go more into the music thing. Do you know of anywhere hiring?" I said early one morning as I was fixing us biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast.
Madison was humming as she tidied up our little couch in the living room. "Hmm... Well we pretty well stay staffed at the diner and bookstore. You could always get online and do a job search."
"Brilliant! Why hadn't I thought of that. Thanks, Madi!" I hugged my friend and went and grabbed my laptop, after we had finished our extremely sugary breakfast and she'd left for the day.
I tapped into my email first off to check for anything new, pretty much it was just notifications from social media sites, spam and other stuff. But one e-mail caught my attention. Clicking to open it, I noticed that it said it was from [email protected]. Hope Hills Apartments was the name of the place that Madison and I had our apartment. The interesting part was that no one ever saw the owner of the hotel. At least if they did no one ever knew it was him or her. Any contact from the owner was done through e-mails or typed letters in the mailboxes down stairs.
The email read like this:
"Susanna,
You now know the odd stipulations that staying at Hope Hills requires.
- You must go to church at an approved church at least every Sunday.
- You are to follow your dreams, but keep God as the pilot.
And so on...
I've heard that you've yet to find a job. I know you're working on your music career with Anthem Lights. That's good. But if you've explored around the apartment building much, you know that no one stays on the fourth floor. Each of those rooms are set apart from different purposes. One in particular, is a music recording studio. There is a recording booth, all the required equipment, and a good set up for making CDs.
My offer to you is this, I want someone to take care of this. It's not been used for a few years now. And needs up keep and use.
Send a return email either accepting or rejecting my offer.
Blessings,
Hope Hills Apartment Owner"
I re-read the email and it kept going through my mind as I got ready and left to meet with the band again today. The best thing I knew to do was pray about this somewhat surprising opportunity that I had just been offered. I made my way early and got there before they were expecting me. Alan, Caleb, and Chad were in the kitchen eating cereal when I went in. We all greeted each other in our usual manners.
Alan had one of those smiles on his face that I learned just what it meant. "Joey is still asleep on the couch."
"Oh really, now?" I said with a quiet laugh.
"We thought you might like to have this." Caleb said handing me a feather.
"And of course this!" Chad said with a rather victorious smile on his face as he handed me a container of whipped cream. "Don't worry it's the lactose-free kind."
"You guys?!" I started laughing. I peaked around the corner and spotted Joey. The guys kept at me until I give in. "Fine, give it here." They applauded me silently as I slipped around the corner. I watched for several minutes to make sure Joey really was asleep, and the steady rise and fall of his chest said it was so.
I leaned down next to couch, then checked... still sleeping soundly. I proceeded with the popular prank that almost everyone has seen on TV at one point or another. Finally I got the feather and used it to tickle Joey's nose. He just twitched it back and forth and finally brought his hand to his face, smearing the cream all over it. He woke with a start and screamed, "Chad!!!"
He blinked when he saw me, and I just waved at him with all my fingers, "Hiya Joey!" He got a look of payback in his eyes. "Oh no! Joey don't!" I squealed.
Joey came towards me, "Come on, Sus. I just want to give you a hug." Before I could get away he caught me in his strong arms, he hugged me getting the messy stuff in my hair. "Oh, I missed a spot. He wiped more of the cream from his face and put it on mine instead. "There, much better!"
"Way to take one for the team, Susanna!" I heard one of the guys holler at me, though I couldn't tell who because of the cream all over my glasses. Pretty sure it was Chad, though. What a bad influence!
Joey's POV
I was cleaning myself up in one of the bathrooms in the studio, and Susanna was in the other. We both came back out to meet my ruthless bandmates at about the same time with dripping wet hair. "They put me up to it!" Susanna said pointing at the guys.
"Figures!" I rolled my eyes, winking at Susanna. "Can't you guys ever just get serious? Me & Susanna were going to let you hear a song we'd been playing around with." My ploy worked and they started apologizing. Except I did notice Caleb flinch at my misuse of grammar. Which was good for a laugh.
Susanna went over and sat at the piano stool and I picked up a nearby guitar and sat in a chair near her. I started the upbeat strum we had worked out for this and she grinned at me. I looked away, knowing if we were looking at each other we'd lose it. We started into the song with some ohohoh's and then Susanna broke lose with, "I'm just a girl with a peanut allergy."
"And the truth is I'm lactose intolerant." I said not able to hold back my goofy grin.
Then for the next line we joined in together, "But that doesn't keep us from perfect harmony." We both stood and took a bow, immediately busting out laughing.
"And I'm the clown?" Chad said laughing.
"Well that was something." Alan said with a scratch of his chin.
"I liked the music." Caleb added in.
Susanna walked back to the piano. "Now I'm actually serious this time. I've been working on a song, and I want you guys to hear what I've got so far and help me out with the rest." She smiled and it reached her eyes, "Joey, if I hum it will you be able to play it?"
"We'll give it a shot." I sat at the piano and listened as she hummed out the tune. I then played it back to her, and she gave me a big grin of approval.
Susanna took a deep breath and let it out slowly, closing her eyes. I did a little intro to the song and then she started in with the words she been working on.
"For so long I was
Blinded to the truth
Searchin after somethin
So much bigger than me
Now I've been found by the King on high
There's nothing like the life I'm living right now
Being a light for the Lord of Lords
While we are on His Earth."
She was good, even better when she was doing her own song for God. This girl had to go on tour with us. She gave us all a shy smile, as she asked, "So what do you guys think?" We all clapped and her smile was huge, as we all talked about what we could do. This was all part of God's great plan.
