Chapter Two
Aurora's head lolled from side to side, as she began to wake up. The room was pitch black, and she couldn't see anything. Her heart began to race, and she had to force herself to breathe steadily. "Kasey? Peter?" She whispered hoarsely.
Peter grumbled, slowly coming around. It took him a moment to realize his eyes were actually open, as the room was as dark as the back of his eyelids.
Kasey came around the same time as them and her senses were screaming now. This room... felt familiar. Uncomfortably familiar. She reached a hand out and touched the wall and flinched back. Her heart raced as she confirmed it. It was a room just like the one she had been kept in.
Her thoughts went to Peter and Aurora and she curled in on herself. She could only hope they'd leave them alone. They just wanted her, right? Maybe... Maybe they left them behind! Maybe they weren't taken too! Maybe- Oh who was she kidding... Why would they not take them? It was too good of an opportunity to resist...
Panic began to creep into Aurora's heart. She felt her hands around the area, trying to get an idea where she was. It didn't feel like the sewer, but the floor and walls were rough under her touch. Maybe the place was old. "Hello?"
Peter shook his head, trying to further wake himself up. It wasn't uncommon for heroes to be targeted, but they hadn't even been in their uniforms. This confused Peter, as he wondered why these enemies would want civilians. Until the thought of Kasey struck him. The lot had come for her.
No one answered Aurora at first. Until she heard a voice over a speaker answer her. Peter heard it too. "Ah, you're finally awake."
Kasey had been panicking but she finally forced herself to calm and to breathe. The air felt wrong in her lungs. Everything filtered out. No smells, no taste, just... air. She turned her focus to the room. Maybe... just maybe she could locate the door and break out. She just had to locate it. She started to walk around the room with her hand on the wall, despite the way it made her shudder.
Aurora gritted her teeth but decided to play the part. After all, she didn't believe they knew who she was. "Why did you take me and my friends? We didn't do anything to you!"
Peter stood up, trying to tap into his spider senses to aid him. "Where are my friends?" He asked. Splitting them up had been smart, but he was going to try and find them.
They didn't answer their questions but instead asked one of their own. "What do you know about your friend? The blond girl."
Kasey tapped her fingers along the wall as she circled the room, listening closely to each and every little tap for any differences.
Damn. Aurora cursed herself for not noticing it sooner. Of course these guys didn't know about Peter and herself, they were after Kasey. "She's my friend, and one of the best people I know. What of it?" She asked snarkily.
Peter continued to walk around the room of his own, taking small careful steps in case he tripped. "I know she's pretty great at Dance Dance Revolution." He chuckled.
There was silence for a moment. "How did you meet her?" If they were gonna dance around the broad questions then they'd narrow them down.
Aurora caught on pretty quickly, figuring they were trying to get information out of them. That's probably why they separated the group, that way one of them might answer truthfully. She just hoped Peter wasn't. "We met at a midnight showing of the My Little Pony movie. Gotta say, not a fan of the animation."
Peter surely wasn't going to be answering that truthfully. It would basically give them all away. "Didn't I just tell you? She's a master at DDR, she whooped my butt at it and we exchanged numbers."
There was silence again before another question. "How long have you known her?"
Aurora pressed her palms against the floor, trying to feel for any vibrations. "About... three years now? Yeah around that."
Peter hummed in thought. "I'm not quite sure. I actually have short term memory loss, so..."
There was a low chuckle on the other end of the speaker. "You're lying."
"Am I? How could you possibly know if I was?" Aurora questioned, pushing herself into a standing position.
Peter simply shrugged, continuing his search for an exit. "I don't think I am. Do you?"
"She hasn't been here for three years." Was the answer. "So, do you want to change your answer?" They directed the response to Aurora directly and then replied to Peter. "You're surprisingly calm about all this."
"No, I think I'll stick to my answer." Aurora responded. They wouldn't get the pun but lightened her own mood. "You wouldn't happen to have any pringles or anything, would ya? I'm famished."
"Overstimulation calms me." Peter replied. Although he was beginning to get frustrated, as he couldn't find any sort of entrance.
"Tell us the truth and we might consider it." They told Aurora.
"Has she told you about herself?" They asked Peter who was... not cooperative but less sassy sounding of the two for the time being at least.
Aurora rolled her eyes and stepped away from the wall, heading into the center of the room. She hoped to find the opposite wall. "Sorry, I just lost my appetite trying to match a face to your voice."
"Sure, she's told me plenty. Her favorite foods, her favorite animals, her best friend in the second grade." Peter really was lying out his ass. He wondered how they hadn't gotten fed up with him yet.
"The sooner you answer truthfully, the sooner we can release you." They told her. "Keep this up, and you'll be here a while."
"What about where she's from?" The question was directed to Peter now.
"Hey if it gets me out of my trigonometry test, keep me here as long as you like. Not my best subject." Aurora squinted, but sighed upon realizing she was still basically blind. She wondered how Kasey dealt with it.
"Candyland. I think it's somewhere in Sweden." Peter quipped, stepping carefully along the floor. How could the room be that big? He couldn't find a wall.
"Alright. I'll place stakes on the table then." they replied. "Maybe you'll talk if we start pressing harder on your friend?" It was more of a threat than a question.
"And here I was hoping you'd cooperate better than your friend... Do you really want us to have to go to more extreme measures? After all, both of you have more or less confirmed you know something about her you want to hide."
Aurora hesitated and weighed her options. "I have nothing more to say to you." She decided to keep quiet. She had no way of knowing if they would actually press harder on Peter.
Peter smirked, finding it nice to know Aurora was giving them a hard time too. "I've been answering your questions, but if you're upset by that, then maybe I shouldn't say anything at all."
"Very well." The speaker went silent for Aurora.
"Seems your friend refuses to cooperate." They didn't acknowledge his response. "We told her that if she didn't start answering truthfully we'd have to press harder on you." They were quiet for a moment. "So unless you want to cooperate, I'm afraid we'll have to resort to those more extreme measures."
Aurora stopped moving, looking around for anything. Once again, it was futile. The room was silent, and empty, and she couldn't stand it! It would've driven her insane, if not for her wanting to get to the others.
Peter frowned, but he couldn't give in. After all, these people had no idea who he was, and he certainly could handle a few tons of pressure. "Resort away."
"Alright then." The speakers went silent. In fact the air around him suddenly felt heavier as the whole room went silent. Even with his heightened senses, there was just... nothing. Only him. On top of the darkness and being unable to find any walls, the air also felt different. Despite not finding any walls, the room suddenly felt a lot smaller.
Peter felt suddenly claustrophobic, as if the air around him was almost too thick to breathe. He tried to keep himself calm, reminding himself that they were just trying to pressure him into talking. He couldn't do that. He couldn't do anything to hurt Kasey.
Was the air too thick or was it getting thinner? He couldn't hear anything but the air was slowly being pulled from the room.
Peter minimalized his movements and forced himself to breathe slow, short breaths. He felt almost dizzy once more, and resorted to crouching down on the floor. It wouldn't do for him to pass out now.
