Chapter six
Kasey heard heavy footsteps starting to get closer as they searched for an exit and pulled them down another hall. They felt like they were going in circles until she heard the faint noise of a window rattling due to the noise.
"This way, quickly." She pulled them along and stopped at the window, letting them go to open it and try to get a grasp on what they had to work with.
She was pleasantly surprised to find a fire escape right there. "Well, that's lucky. Come on, there's a fire escape. We can either go down and try to escape through the streets of who knows where, or to the roofs and traverse those."
Aurora stood in front of the window, feeling the breeze flow in. It was nice versus that stuffy building. "How good are these guys at hopping rooftops? We might be able to get far enough away from them if they're just regular guys." She webbed the vials to her side, reaching out to touch the fire escape.
"Don't think they are enhanced at all. Not that I know of at least. So we probably got a good chance." She helped them both out onto the small fire escape balcony and slid the window shut. "Wanna web it shut to slow them down?"
"Wayyy ahead of ya." Aurora felt for the window's sidings, webbing every crack she felt to make sure it stuck.
"Upwards and onwards?" Peter asked, making sure to keep himself on edge. Falling from this height would suck.
Kasey nodded. "Guess so. There should be railings to help guide you." She explained as she located the stairs and started climbing.
Peter found the railings and took hold of them, pulling himself up the stairs. This was the last leg of their escape and he really didn't want to screw it up.
Aurora tied up the back, following after the other two. Every so often she would thread a line of webbing at foot level, so if they had any pursuers, it might trip them.
Kasey could faintly hear the people inside yelling and rushing about searching for them. She'd point out windows to Aurora to seal them as they climbed.
After a bit they reached the top and she helped them both onto the roof.
"Alright, here's where it's gonna get tricky since you both can't see..."
Aurora obliged, following Kasey's instructions. She fell slightly behind for each window she sealed, but caught up afterwards. Once she found herself on the roof, she began to flex her wrists once more.
"Yeah, I don't think I've ever jumped rooftops with my eyes closed before." Peter commented, shifting his feet on the roof. He could hear loose rocks grind below him.
Kasey took a deep breath, gathered a few loose rocks and walked down to the edge of the roof and tossed them. She heard them hit the other roof and nodded.
"We are gonna just have to wing it but this first jump isn't bad." She explained.
Aurora found her way next to Kasey, and reached out for the ledge of the building. It wasn't too huge of a lip, so she'd be able to jump it easily. "At least I got a good stretch by all that walking earlier."
Peter shifted from foot to foot, nervous for the first jump. After that, he thought it'd be easy. "It's a leap of faith."
Kasey smiled a bit at that. "Now you know what it's like for me out with you two all the time." She replied. "Sure the tech in my suit helps but I mostly rely on my instincts to get me around."
She stepped back then sprinted forward and leapt and rolled onto the other roof with practiced ease. "Alright, I can try to help you guys across but it's mostly up to you."
"I'm just going to overshoot it." Aurora stated. That way, she wouldn't fall too short, and instead just land further onto the next roof. She took a step back and bounded forward, landing roughly on the next roof. "Coulda stuck the landing better."
Peter hesitated, but was reminded of their pursuers by the shouts echoing from the building. He felt for the edge of the building and leapt, thankfully landing on the next edge of the building.
Kasey smiled when they both made it. "Great, now for a few more." She led them to the next one and leapt again, turning around once she landed to make sure they made it.
Aurora repeated her process like before, feeling for the edge of the building and leaping to the next.
Peter did the same, this time jumping a little further to keep away from the edge of the next building.
Kasey relaxed when they seemed to get it down and they kept going for a while before she slowed to a stop. "You think this is good?" She asked them. "It's pretty far now." She ran her uninjured hand through her hair.
Aurora skidded to a stop, sucking in a few deep breaths. "I think we're far enough away now." She sat down, pressing her palms against her eyes. "Still can't see though."
"Same here." Peter groaned, coming closer to the group. "We should find somewhere to lay low for a while though. I don't know if they can see us from their roof."
"Right. There's another fire escape here. We can climb down from there and try to find a phone to call Tony?" She offered. "Surely there's a payphone somewhere or someone will let us borrow one."
"Sounds like a plan to me, but..." Aurora thought to herself for a moment tapping her fingers rhythmically against each other. "Should we act like we can see? Three blind teenagers wandering around... wherever we are, might draw unwanted attention."
Kasey sighed but nodded. "If at all possible, yes. I already know how to do that but you two may have some trouble..."
"Follow your lead then?" Peter asked, resting for a moment before they began moving again.
"Yeah, I guess that's the best idea." She agreed. "We'll try to avoid people if we can." She explained. "I think it'll be easiest to try that route unless needed."
"Sounds like a plan to me." Pete replied, heading towards the edge of the building to find a fire escape. "I think there's one on this side."
Kasey followed him. "Yeah." She guided him to it and stepped on herself. "Just climb down, find a phone, call Tony, and hide out until he can get here, wherever here is..."
Peter nodded and took slow, careful steps. He was really grateful to have his spider sense, as he thought it would be 10 times more difficult without it.
Aurora followed after, every so often trying to blink away the darkness. She really, really hoped it was temporary.
She made sure they both got to the ground safely and started to head to the opening, reaching up to rub at her eyes as they still kinda stung- Oh.
She felt the strange texture of mostly dried blood on her face and stopped. Oh. She opened her mouth to say something only to become aware of the heavy taste of iron lingering there and felt sick to her stomach and stepped away from the opening, her heart racing.
How was she supposed to even mention this??
Aurora paused when she heard Kasey stop moving. She held onto the fire escape, reaching out for Kasey. She didn't even know where she was standing. "Kasey? You okay there?"
"Uh, y-yeah. Um..." She hesitated, biting her lip slightly only to wince at the taste. "There uh... might be a slight issue..."
"Yeah..?" Aurora asked, irking an eyebrow in curiosity. She couldn't exactly see the issue, so she was depending on Kasey to tell her.
"I, uh, am kinda covered in blood?? From, uh, m-my hand." She quickly stumbled out the... half truth of the situation.
"Oh, yeah. That's... not great." Aurora nodded. "Maybe we can find a public restroom to wash up in? But I don't really think we're gonna find one before a phone."
"Do you have a hood? I can't remember if you wore one today." Peter asked. "You could pull the hood up to kinda hide some of it."
"Uh... I am wearing a hoodie, yes but that's another issue... It's all over the front of it." She explained. "And my hand, and um, face..."
Peter sighed, pausing where he was on the fire escape. "That's a little bit of a setback." He hummed in thought. "I guess we'll just have to move quicker. Which won't be the easiest, but... yeah."
"Y-Yeah. I just... it's gonna draw attention..." She frowned. "I was hoping to avoid that." She waited for them to climb down.
Peter nodded and continued down, until his feet stepped off of the rackety metal and onto solid concrete. "Found the pavement."
She chuckled. "That's good." She walked over and took his hand with her good one. "Aurora, you ready too?"
Aurora stepped off the fire escape and wiped her hands on her pants. "Yup, ready." She came up on Kasey, and placed her hand on her shoulder instead of taking her bad hand.
She took a deep breath and pulled her hood up and stepped out of the alleyway with them. "Stay close and move fast if you can." She told them.
Peter nodded silently and stepped closer to Kasey. If he was lucky, he might even be able to hide some of the blood from the view of other people.
Aurora obliged, staying close and quick. "I'll be happy if I can sleep in my own bed tonight." She joked lightly, to brighten the mood.
That did make Kasey laugh a little. "Oh man, what I wouldn't give for that right now." She replied as she led them along. She used the sound around them to see.
She tried to listen for the signs of a small store or somewhere that might be more friendly towards lending a phone. She however was not liking the faint buzz of her senses from all angles. It wasn't loud but it just lingered.
Peter walked briskly, making sure not to trip over himself. He was surprised how much he had to pay attention to that, and every other little thing, just to make sure he could walk without eating pavement.
Kasey kept walking, keeping her head down as she did, her heart racing as she listened to the sounds around them. They did not sound anything like their part of town... More sirens, more yelling, swearing, just... a much more violent atmosphere...
She slowed when she heard the sounds of a coffee shop. Those were safe right? Most of the time?? Maybe??? She headed towards it. "There's a coffee shop up ahead. Maybe we can get some help there..." She told them quietly.
Aurora slowed alongside her, trying to listen for the coffee shop. She wished she had the same hearing abilities as Kasey. "Coffee truly solves all, doesn't it? Worst case scenario, no one has a phone and we're asked to leave."
"Yep, exactly. But hey, maybe a place to clean up too..." She chuckled faintly. She slowed when they approached and with ease grabbed the door. "Alright, you guys gotta go in first so I'll hold the door." She told them.
Peter nodded and headed in first, followed by Aurora after him. He waited just inside the door for Kasey. The sounds of the coffee shop were much more apparent now that they were inside, and the scent of fresh ground coffee filled the air. It was much more pleasant than where they had just been.
Kasey walked in after them, staying a bit behind them before locating the bathroom. "I'm gonna wash up real fast-" She told them but guided them to a table so they weren't just standing awkwardly.
She disappeared into the bathroom after making sure no one else was in there and started to quickly clean up as much as she could. She pulled her hoodie off, revealing the tank top underneath and tied it around her waist.
She turned the water on with her good hand and carefully washed her arm off and then cleaned up her face and rinsed out her mouth as best as she possibly could.
She was almost tempted to use soap to get that taste out but didn't. She wasn't sure if any was in her hair so she rinsed it out as well and used the paper towels to dry off the best she could.
She already felt a lot better. Her senses still faintly hummed at her but she chalked it up to just this part of the city.
Peter took a seat at the table Kasey had guided them to, nervously meddling with his hands. He couldn't help but tune in to the sounds around him, and the conversations between patrons.
Aurora rapped her knuckles against the table softly, waiting for Kasey to return. Having her clean up would make things a lot easier. After all, people don't tend to trust people covered in blood.
Kasey had dried off as much as she could and took a deep breath, kicking her senses into place for her to "see" more clearly.
It took a lot of focus but she could basically act like she was able to see like most people. She came out and over to Peter and Aurora. "Alright, all cleaned up. Thoughts on our next move?" She asked as she sat down next to Peter.
Peter shook his head, and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Uh, try and find a phone, and contact Mr. Stark. That's... about as far as I've gotten with a plan. Without-" He paused and leaned in, lowering his voice. "Without our suits, sight, and ability to use our strengths, there's not a whole lot we can do on our own."
Kasey nodded at that. "I know for a fact we aren't near where they snagged us. It's... the atmosphere is completely different." She explained with a sigh. "I don't even know where to start on finding or asking for a phone... Everything feels dangerous."
Peter nudged her lightly. "I may not be as sharp as you are with your other senses, but I've been eavesdropping a little." He smirked. "Most people are having basic conversations, but most seem pretty approachable."
Kasey smirked back at that. "Well that's good at least. Just kinda weird to walk up to people though." She chuckled softly. She started to get ready to get up to find someone to ask when the bell jingled and she turned to it, seeing a woman walk in.
She watched her for a moment before looking away.
Safe. Her senses whispered but she wasn't exactly sure about just straight up approaching the first person to walk in. She heard her order three coffees and a box of doughnuts.
She furrowed her brow. Coffee? But by all means it should be... night? Right? Or... Or had they been gone longer than she realized?
Aurora waited in silence, after hearing the bell chime over the door. "I'm going to assume that was someone normal?" She asked quickly, seeing as Kasey hadn't told them to run again or anything. She felt around on the table and grabbed a thin sheet of plastic, holding it up in front of her, as if she was reading it.
"Yeah." Kasey replied. She listened to the lady thank the cashier and start to walk back to the door but felt her gaze land on them.
Help. Safe. Her senses whispered again.
She listened to the lady keep walking before hesitating by the door and turned back to them and they met each other's gaze which Kasey silently pleaded she could read.
As if her wish had been granted, the lady walked over. "Um, hi. I'm sorry to bother you but... are you three alright?" She asked, keeping her voice low but soft.
Kasey could've just started crying right then and there. "Actually we are a bit lost." She admitted. "Our phones are all dead and we don't have enough between us to cover a ride..." She explained.
The lady's expression became soft. "May I sit with you for a minute?" Kasey nodded and she sat down next to Aurora and across from Kasey. "Would you be able to call someone to come pick you up if you had a phone?" She asked.
"Yes! We have been trying to find a payphone or something but don't know this area very well..." She chuckled softly.
She chuckled softly. "Here," She pulled her phone out and handed it to Kasey, unlocked. "If you want I'd be happy to wait here with you until they arrive as well."
Kasey looked down at the phone, silently cursing herself as it was an electronic phone and she couldn't tell anything apart on it so she just focused on that and let Peter and Aurora answer for her.
Aurora cleared her throat and jumped in on the conversation. Whoever this lady was, she was nice enough to offer them help, so Aurora would be just as nice in return. "That would be nice, thank you. It might take a while for them to get here." She set the plastic menu back down on the table.
"That's alright. I think my bosses have it handled." She replied with a smile. "Oh!" She pulled open the doughnut box while Kasey strained her eyes until she could vaguely make out the app shapes and clicked the phone and once she had a keypad she typed quickly and with ease.
If the lady had noticed, she didn't say anything. Just like how she didn't mention the menu was upside down. "Do you want some doughnuts? We never finish the whole box anyway-"
Kasey held the phone to her ear, her heart racing. She listened to it ring once and almost twice before it was answered.
"Who is this?" Tony's voice spoke and she just about cried. She stood up to talk to him in a quieter part of the cafe so she could focus.
"Um, h-hey dad-"
She heard something hit the ground and the sounds of the ironman suit activating. The call was shifted to the suit. "Where are you."
"Uh..." She hesitated. "I don't... I don't know but all three of us need a ride-"
She heard Tony swear which made her chuckle softly. "Can you get a location?"
"One sec," Kasey replied and headed back towards them, shaking a little bit with relief, exhaustion, and just overall emotion.
Aurora heard Kasey get up to take the call, and hope swelled in her chest. She knew Tony had picked up, and she thought that, finally, they might be able to go back home soon. "Oh, uh..." She would've taken one, if she had been able to see where the box was. "I'm fine actually, thank you. Had a big breakfast this morning."
Peter shook his head, declining the offer as well. "No thanks, I'm not a huge sugar guy anyway." He ran a hand through his hair, figuring it was probably a mess. "Thank you, for your help by the way."
"Of course. It's not every day I see a group of teenagers wander into Hell's Kitchen when they very clearly aren't from this area." She replied with a small laugh, closing the doughnut box. "Oh, my name's Karen by the way. Karen Page." She introduced.
Kasey heard the Hell's Kitchen comment and sat at the table. "Um, Miss Page, could you tell me the name of the cafe?" She asked, her voice quiet. "I didn't catch it when we came in, we were in a hurry..."
"Oh sure! It's Hidden Heaven Cafe." She replied.
"Did you get that?" She asked into the phone. "Hidden Heaven Cafe in Hell's Kitchen."
"Got it. Happy and I are in the car headed your way as fast as the speed limit will allow." Tony reassured her. "You safe there?"
Kasey looked up at Karen who was talking about how one of her bosses had complained about the coffee she made at the office so she started coming here, trying to keep the atmosphere light in spite of the situation. "Yeah. We're safe."
"Alright. Happy is taking some uh, short cuts. He says ETA is about 15."
"Okay. See you soon."
"Stay where I can call you, okay? Please?"
"Miss Page offered to wait with us, so will do." Kasey reassured him. They said their farewells and she hung up. She handed the phone back over. "Thank you so much Miss Page-"
Karen took the phone. "Please, just call me Karen."
Kasey smiled at that. "Kasey."
"Aurora." She introduced herself simply, waving her hand softly as a sort of 'hello'. She faced (or tried to face) Kasey with an expectant expression. "Is he on his way?"
Peter grinned, finding that he liked the name. Even that was nice. "Nice to meet you Karen, I'm Peter. And I guess trying to act like we weren't lost was probably the one thing that made us stick out, huh?"
Kasey nodded. "Yes. ETA is 15." she answered.
Karen gave a small laugh. "A little bit. You also just radiate a different kinda atmosphere than you usually see around here." She replied. "Also I may have noticed you were holding the menu the wrong way-" She pointed out gently to Aurora.
If Aurora could see herself, she knew she'd be a bright shade of red. She let out an awkward laugh, flipping the menu the opposite way. Next time, she'd leave the 'seeing act' to Kasey. "Oh, it's just an inside joke between the three of us. From a long, long while ago."
"Mmm... I have a friend who does that sometimes too. He doesn't realize it sometimes though." She replied, trying not to just straight up call her out seeing as she was trying to hide it.
Kasey looked interested in that but didn't speak up.
"Oh? I guess it really is a small world." Aurora replied with a shrug.
Peter spoke up again. "You mentioned you stopped by to get some stuff for your bosses? You don't have to answer, but uh, what kind of work do you do?" He refused to sit in awkward silence until Mr. Stark showed up.
"Hmm? Oh! I'm a secretary at their law firm." She explained before giving a small gasp. "Oh! Here," She took a card from her purse and held it out.
Kasey, knowing Peter wouldn't be able to do much with it, took it. She was slightly surprised when she felt brail at the bottom. She "looked" it over and read it aloud. "Nelson and Murdock, huh? I don't recognize it but then again, I haven't exactly researched law firms." She grinned, handing the card to Peter just to let him play with it. Besides, he had easier access to his pockets then she did.
Peter looked in the general direction of the card, nodding along as he 'read' it. He tucked the card away into his pocket, reminding himself to convince Tony to send a thank-you gift to the firm for Karen. "Then again, we don't really do anything worth needing a lawyer." He chuckled.
Kasey snorted a bit. "Are you sure about that?" She teased him. "Mister 'lets do potentially dangerous science in the kitchen sink'-"
"Hey! Doing science experiments for research is completely ethical! Imagine if we found something that could change people's lives!" Peter exclaimed, before continuing on a tirade of scientific and nerdy logic.
Aurora rolled her eyes, mostly by muscle memory. "You'll have to excuse him. He gets very- and I mean very- excited about his science projects."
Kasey was laughing at him. "Even when it flooded the kitchen that one time? Or the glitter bomb you tried to recreate?"
Karen laughed. "No, it's fine. It's refreshing to see people actually interested in something around here."
"Okay that was one time! Well- okay- technically it was just a couple of times! But I know exactly what went wrong, and if I got the chance, I'd be able to recreate it perfectly!" Peter exclaimed, excited about the topic.
"Really? I don't know much about Hell's Kitchen, but from what I'm hearing now, it seems it lives up to its name?" She asked.
Karen chuckled lowly at the question. "You have no idea kid. You're lucky the three of you found one of the few little sanctuaries."
Kasey was struggling to breathe as she teased Peter. She loved seeing him get excited and riled up, it never seized to make her smile and relax. She was about to say something else when she heard the familiar noise of Tony's car pulling up to the front of the cafe. She started to say he was here when Karen's phone buzzed.
Karen stopped and looked down at it. "Oh, it seems your dad is here? He says they just pulled up."
Aurora nodded in agreement, glad that Kasey had led them there. "Well, a coffee shop is always a nice place to make a new friend."
Peter stopped in the middle of his science splurge and let out a relieved sigh. "Thank you so much, Ms. Karen. We'd probably still be hanging around here not knowing what to do if it wasn't for you." He thanked her.
"Of course! I'm glad I was able to help out. Since I'm leaving too, why don't I walk you out there just to make sure you're all good?"
Kasey blushed a little bit but was smiling. "I-it's okay you don't have to-"
"If he's right out front I'll pass him anyway." She replied with a smile. "Come on, grab your stuff." She stood up, picking up the, now cold, coffee and box of doughnuts.
Kasey nodded and stood up and pushed her chair back in.
Hoo boy this was going to be a fun interaction. Aurora thought to herself. She stood up, still making sure the vials were intact and safe in her pants pocket. She had moved them there before entering the cafe, for safekeeping.
Peter picked up the computer tower from where he had placed it on the floor and followed after the group. It wasn't heavy for him to carry, but he was grateful he didn't have to bring the monitor too.
Karen was a bit confused by the computer when Peter grabbed it but maybe they bought it and that's why they didn't have the money??? She shook her head and held the door open for them.
Kasey hurried up to her friends and placed her hands on their shoulders, letting them know she was right there as they stepped outside.
