Chapter four
Kasey dropped onto the ground, catching the guard with ease when they entered the observation room. The only easily accessible exit was blocked by a handful of guards. She could sense Peter and Aurora nearby but couldn't see them.
"They are in those two rooms." The man told her.
"Let them out." Was her short reply.
"Only if you answer a few questions."
She narrowed her eyes. "That wasn't the deal-"
"No, the deal was we'd take you to them. That was it." He replied with a smug tone.
"I'll poison him!" She threatened, baring her teeth again and making the guard squirm in her tight grasp.
"Then do it."
The guards all looked surprised by the dare but Kasey stiffened.
"Or am I calling your bluff?"
Her heart was racing as she debated her options before releasing the guard, allowing him to stand up only for her to jump and latch to his back and sink her teeth into his shoulder with a firm, sickening crunch.
The guard screamed in pain and the guards stepped back in horror.
The man was also surprised by this move and let out a surprised laugh. "Well, isn't this an interesting turn of events?" He mused as Kasey released her grip on the man and kicked him towards the others who scrambled to stop the bleeding.
She hated the taste in her mouth but she was determined to show them that she wasn't playing around. "Let. Them. Go." She snarled.
"Do they know about you? Hmm? About this?" He gestured at the guard and then at her, blood dripping from her mouth. "About what you are?"
She was breathing heavily as she was worked up now. "No." She snapped. "I don't talk about or use them around people who can't protect themselves." She replied.
"That implies someone knows."
"It does. But it's not them." She replied. "It's someone you'll never be able to touch."
"How did you meet them?"
She had a feeling they had both given a few answers but there was no way for her to match them... "Does it matter?"
"I'd say so."
She huffed. "I met them while I was exploring trying to find my way around now that I don't have eyesight." She replied.
"Hmm. Have you told them where you're from?"
This confused Kasey. "Uh... New York??? That's... that's kinda obvious???"
The man looked a bit surprised but only for a moment. "Very well. We'll let your friends go."
Kasey watched him move to the console or what she assumed was the console. "But you will be staying here."
Ah. There was the twist. She sensed the guards slowly approach her and shook her head. "Not an option. But thanks for letting me know where they are."
The man turned to look at her but was greeted by her launching herself onto the ceiling and swinging and kicking him out the observatory window and to the ground a few feet below. She fought the guards out of the room and blocked the door. She stared at the control panel and groaned when she couldn't figure it out.
So she leapt to the bottom floor, past the man who was starting to get up and placed her hands against one of the rooms and started feeling for the door from the outside. She'd be able to yank the door off a lot easier from here.
Aurora heard the commotion and smirked. She had an idea who was behind all of that. "Sounds like you jerks are getting what you deserve!" She shouted, trying to find her way to a wall once more. The observants probably would be busy with Kasey, so she hoped she could search around unnoticed.
"Yes!" Peter smirked, and began doing the same, trying to find a wall. After this he was going to treasure his eyesight a lot more. The sensory deprivation was definitely not fun.
Kasey kept an "eye" on the other person in the room but focused on finding the door. The rooms seemed to be a decent size. Not massive but not small either. She just kept walking until she found it and smirked.
She wasn't sure if they could hear her or not but wouldn't hurt right? "I'm kickin the door in!" She called before swiftly spinning and kicking the door in which was much easier to do since it opened inwards.
She could suddenly see Peter now and relaxed at the feeling. He was standing in the center of the room it seemed. "Peter," She called out.
Peter ducked just in time for the door to fly over his head. He chuckled and went towards Kasey's voice. "That was a little overboard, wasn't it?" He teased her. His eyes hurt at the sudden light from the doorway.
She shrugged. "I don't know how strong the doors are!" She argued. But then she tilted her head in confusion. Peter was trying to come towards her but... he was staying in place????
She squinted in confusion. "Peter?? Do... How are you doing that?" She asked, sounding confused but asking slowly. He didn't act like he realized... and now really wasn't the time for this.
"How am I doing what? Walking? I thought you knew how to do that already." Peter asked, before realizing he really wasn't getting any closer to Kasey. He stopped moving and fully facepalmed himself. "You've got to be kidding me. No wonder I couldn't find a wall! They had me on some kind of... multidirectional treadmill..?"
Kasey just looked even more confused. "I mean... I assume so but... how did you not realize???"
"Well, for one, I can't see anything in this room! It's pitch black. And I don't think the dim light from the hallway is helping much, cause I can barely see you." Peter responded, squinting to try and see her better. Not that it helped. In fact it seemed to make it worse.
That made Kasey's hair stand up a bit. "You can't?" She didn't have her web shooters so she couldn't yank him out that way and if he couldn't see, jumping wasn't much of an option... But that might work. "Okay. I'm going to come in but stick to the ceiling and help you across that way, okay? That's the only thing I can think of other than getting Aurora to help..." She explained as she ran a hand through her hair.
She could sense the man slowly starting to come around again and frowned deeply.
"Are you sure that's okay?" Peter asked, but shook his head. There probably wasn't any time to ask questions. "If you get over here, I can hold onto you, so you just have to worry about getting back."
"Yeah," She stepped in and leapt up to the ceiling and stood upside down, approaching the middle of the room and held her arms down. "Grab on." She told him as she spun to face the doorway again.
Peter centered himself under her and jumped, reaching for her arms. Only one of his hands made contact, and he had to pull himself up to grab the other. "Sorry, thought I was in the right spot." He muttered.
"You're fine." She replied and pulled him a bit higher off the floor and over to the doorway. She double checked they were in the right place then nodded to herself. "Okay, I'll lower you down and you should be able to just let go and walk out." She explained as she lowered him back down as much as she could.
Peter made sure to hold on tightly until he was told otherwise. Once he felt himself being lowered, he let go of her and dropped to the floor. He blinked a few times and made his way towards the door. "Why do these guys insist on keeping it so dark in here?"
She dropped down behind him and followed him out, making sure not to bump into him. She hesitated. "I- I don't know." She couldn't be sure really just based on the temperature of the room whether they were on or not and just carefully took his hand. "This way."
She guided him to Aurora's room and started doing what she did to Peter's. "Try to stay close, okay?"
Peter kept his hand in hers, following her closely. He was trying to be in tune with his spider sense, to try and feel out the area around him. So far, he wasn't getting very far with that.
Aurora prepared herself, in case whoever came through the door wasn't friendly. She would fight if she had to, but it wasn't at the top of her list right now.
She kept walking until she found it. "Okay, stand back just a bit." She told Peter, letting go of his hand but guiding it to the wall. Once he stood back she spoke a bit louder. "Brace yourself Aurora!" And BAM! Door was no longer in its frame.
Alike to Peter, Aurora hit the deck just as the door flew by. "Nice!" She laughed lightly. "I'm so glad you guys are here I just got, like, electrocuted or something."
Kasey frowned at that. "They what?" She gave a low growl. She wasn't regretting biting that guy as much now... if only it had been the other. She shook her head. "Nevermind, I'm going to come in on the roof to lift you up and out cause if it's like Peter's room then you're on a multidirectional treadmill or something like that." She explained as she came inside and up onto the roof.
"And here I was just thinking the room was massive." Aurora grumbled to herself. A multidirectional treadmill made a lot more sense now, and now that she thought of it, it was pretty cruel to use that to manipulate captives. Aurora waited for Kasey, and jumped up to grab onto her.
Kasey grabbed her easily and lifted her up and out like she did Peter. "Alright. You can hop down now." She told her. "Peter's just outside to your right." She explained.
Aurora let go and dropped to the floor, stumbling a bit. "Remind me not to get zapped again anytime soon." She joked lightly and headed towards the doorway. "Damn it's dark."
Kasey frowned when Aurora commented that too but followed her out. "Alright. Stay close, alright?" She told them both. "There's still people lurking around." She was kinda grateful none of them could see at the moment cause she didn't feel like explaining the blood around her mouth and shirt.
"They probably have this place guarded really well. Especially if they're the same ones who had you before." Aurora kept her voice low, in case any of the enemies were close by and listening.
Peter nodded in agreement. "We should find a way out, and then somewhere to lay low for a while." He suggested, keeping close to the girls.
Kasey gave a small nod. "I... They are." She confirmed her voice was breathy so they wouldn't be overheard. "I recognize them and their tactics..." She took a shaky breath. "Last time I got out was pure luck, honestly... And I had jumped out the window expecting to hit the ground and miraculously survive or die. Either of those options were better... But you caught me. They didn't expect that." She sighed softly but stiffened listening to the man start getting up and moving. "We need to go." She told them.
Aurora nodded and slipped her hand into Kasey's. Sticking together would probably be their best bet of getting out of there. "C'mon."
Peter did the same on the other side of Kasey. He still believed the hallway was dark, but didn't really question it right away. He started moving, keeping his free hand along the wall. "Do you know where to go?"
Kasey started leading them away from where she sensed the man. "I could try to get you both up into the control room but someone's over there so unless he gives chase we can't go over there." She replied. Her heart was beating fast as she tried to locate any other way out. "Just keep your hand on the wall for now and tell me if you find a door or something."
"Right." Aurora nodded and returned to silence. Her chest continued to ache from the zap, and now the added stress. She reached her hand out to feel for anything around them.
After a few moments, Peter spoke up. "I think there's something here." He felt a door jam, and ran his hands over the cold steel. "Maybe a door?"
Kasey turned towards him and pulled Aurora over, letting her touch the wall before using her hand to feel it too. She pressed and pulled her hand a little bit and felt it move. "I think so. Handle over there?" She asked.
Aurora shifted her hand along the door, locating the handle. "Found it." She turned the handle and pushed the door open. "Everyone in, I'll close it behind us."
Kasey pulled Peter inside and put her hand on Aurora's shoulder. "Go ahead." She replied. "But as quietly as you can."
Aurora took the door and closed it softly, keeping one hand on the doorframe so she knew when to slow the door down. It made little to no noise when it closed. "There."
"Where are we now?" Peter asked, even if no one really knew.
At this point Kasey was starting to get worried. "You guys still can't see?" She asked. She doubted this hall would be dark but... maybe she's wrong. She hoped she was wrong.
"Well, when they first caught us, they sprayed some kind of mist in our face or something. I thought it was just something to make us unconscious, but maybe it's affecting our vision?" Peter theorized, feeling his way around the outside of the room. So far he had found a few file cabinets.
"If that's the case this is gonna be a lot harder..." Kasey replied softly. She sighed. "You two stay together as much as possible. I can sense you for the most part." She explained. She lightly tapped the walls and listened closely. "It's a hallway. A few cabinets? uh, a couple rooms just a bit further down but at the end of the hall is the door into the next area. I think..."
"Well that's just fantastic." Aurora muttered, sticking close to Peter. She stepped carefully, both to not make a whole lot of noise, and to not trip over anything.
Peter was quiet for a little while. "Do you... think it's temporary?" He asked as they walked. He understood that Kasey was both strong and blind, but... it was hard to grasp that he might be blind.
Kasey stopped and hesitated. "Hopefully. The only reason I lost mine is the experiments they ran on me." She answered quietly. She didn't turn to them. "But I'm also able to... sorta see?" She tried to explain. "It's not the best but... I can at least move around without running into things. I think my other senses are the only reason I can navigate at all..."
"Like you lose one sense, so the other senses fill in for what you're missing." Peter nodded, continuing down the hallway. It wasn't too long before they had reached the door at the end.
"Alright. I'm not sure what to expect so... just trust your instincts as fast as you can, okay?" She told them both, her hand on the handle.
"I can certainly try." Aurora sighed out. This was upsetting, but she'd put off any upset feelings for when they got out of there. "Let's just try to put this whole thing behind us, yeah?"
She gave a small nod. "Okay." She opened the door a bit, listened then nodded again. "Stay low and stay as quiet as possible. Here," She took Peter's hand. "Hang on to each other." She told them.
Peter followed her instructions closely, clenching his hand tightly around hers. He hunkered down slightly, to try and make himself seem smaller and less likely to be spotted.
Aurora took up the end of the line, taking Peter's other hand. "I'll try to keep an eye out back here." She cursed herself for her word usage.
Kasey nodded. "I'll alert you if I sense something you don't." She reassured her. She led them through the much larger space, following the halls and listening for anyone nearby. She tried to listen to anything that might signal an escape.
