Chapter five

They walked for a while until she stopped sensing people approaching them from both in front and behind. She quietly but firmly slammed her firm hand against the wall to her right and stomped her foot.

She narrowed her eyes as she pulled them a bit faster down the hall and stopped when she couldn't find a handle and felt the wall and gritted her teeth when she found what she assumed was a hand scanner or something.

"Aurora, think you can get an electronic door open? Quickly?"

Aurora paused to catch her breath, nodding quickly. "Oh, right, right. I can try to get it open."

She found her way to the scanner, running her hands over it to feel each ridge and button. There was a static of silence before she let out a relieved sigh. "Okay, I can crack this one." She felt under the scanner and there was an audible crack, where she popped the back off and began fiddling with the wires. She was simply glad she didn't have to see to solve this. A couple snapped wires later the door unlocked.

"Okay, come on." Kasey led them both inside and looked at Aurora. "Can you shut it without completely locking us in? I'm not sure there's another way out."

"Yep, yep." She shifted her hands along the left side of the wall, finding a different tile. Pressing into the tile, it cracked and she pulled out an electronic box.

"These types of doors usually have wires on the left side, and if switches up correctly-" She followed the wires delicately with her fingers, popping them out and into a couple different slots. "Can create a manual lock. Only we can open the door from the inside now."

"Great. Okay." She took a deep breath. "They'll be coming down the hall in a minute. We need to lay low here for now." She told them before sinking to the ground. She was tired. She had exerted a lot of energy fighting her way out and breaking them out. And the taste of iron still lingered heavily in her mouth which made her shudder.

Peter sighed and slid down the wall he was holding onto, straight to the floor. He pulled his knees close to his chest, resting his arms and head on them. "This day took one heck of a turn, didn't it?"

"Got that right." Aurora sat down next to the two of them, finally allowing herself to catch her breath. "You guys okay though?"

Kasey nodded a bit. "Y-Yeah. Just... tired." She replied. "I should be asking you two."

Peter shrugged lightly, resting his head on his arms. "Tired, a little out of it, feels like my senses are all over the place. Other than that not much."

"Same as Peter. My chest still hurts from the shocks, but that's about it." She reveled in this time to rest, letting her body relax.

Kasey nodded again, taking another deep breath. "I assume they took your phones?" She asked after a moment.

Aurora tapped her pockets, indicating that they were empty. "No phones, no tech. No way to call for help, but also no way for anyone to track where we are."

Peter sighed, looking over to where he assumed the other two were. "All we've got are our strength and wits I suppose."

Kasey felt a faint smile pull at her lips when she "saw" Peter try to look towards them but was just ever so slightly off. She didn't point it out. "Well. We can see if there's anything of use here maybe." She carefully stood up with a small grunt. "You guys can rest if you want." She told them.

Peter pushed himself up, refusing to sit back. "I'll help search for something. Other than walking on a giant treadmill, I don't think I've done enough to tire me out."

Aurora rubbed her thumb against her collarbone absentmindedly. "I'll probably hang back for now. I'll also check on the lock every now and then to make sure it stays."

"Alright." She tapped her foot lightly before taking a couple steps and trying to figure out what room they were in. She walked over to a counter and very carefully felt around until she sensed a small rolling cart and furrowed her brow, moving towards it.

She grabbed hold of it and it rolled slightly and bumped something which drew her attention and she reached out and when she touched it, her senses screamed.

She could see it and her heart raced as she stood there frozen, her hand stuck to it until she finally pulled back, a bit too forcefully and fell against the cart knocking it over, leaving them both on the floor with loud clangs and a thud.

The senses grew louder and louder. They were deafening. Her chest tightened as she tried to get away but in her panic placed her hand down on one of the tools that fell from the cart and she screamed, she couldn't hear it as her senses were too loud, when a deep cut inserted itself into her hand.

She started to gasp for breath as hot tears ran down her face. Her eyes were starting to burn and hurt. They hurt so bad- She reached up and dug at them, smearing blood on her face as she shook, starting to hyperventilate. Her chest was tightening as she scratched at her face and sobbed, struggling to breathe.

Peter followed after her, before the incident happened. He felt himself knocked backwards and the wind knocked out of him. He coughed a couple times, before sitting up to the sounds of... panic?

"Kasey?" Peter reached out for her, hearing her breathing quicken and scratching sounds. "Kasey! Calm down, please calm down!" Peter grasped for her, taking a hold of her arms to try and keep her from hurting herself. "Kasey, you're safe, you're with us, nobody is going to hurt you!"

When he pulled her hand away, he felt something warm and wet spread to his own as she continued to panic, pulling as hard as she could away from him, scrambling back again. Her heart was beating so hard and fast that Peter could almost hear it with ease. She was gasping for breath and he could barely make out the words she was breathing out. "Stay... away... no... touch..."

Peter felt the liquid on his hands, and his heart skipped a beat. Wherever they were, whatever she had found, had sent her right back into that lab all those years ago. "Kasey, please. No one is going to hurt you." He begged her to ground herself.

She shook her head as she struggled. "W-Won't... let... you..." She breathed out, forcing herself onto her feet which felt like they'd give out again any moment as she stepped back. "Keep... away..."

Peter felt around for something to help him up. He pulled himself up and reached out for her again, despite the shaking in his hands. "Won't let me what? Kasey, it's Peter."

She took another step back, rubbing at her eyes as they burned. "Won't... let... you... take... them..." It was hard to hear her through her breaths as she took another step back. "I... won't... let-!" She gave a cry of surprise when she fell back when she backed into something. She landed on something cold and metallic and her whole body froze up again, tears pouring from her face, mixing with the blood on her face.

Memories flooded through her brain as she laid there, unable to move.

---

She was restrained to the cold metal table, her heart racing as she stared blankly at the ceiling above her. She couldn't move, not just because she was restrained but they had given her a paralysis dosage to keep her still while they worked. They gave her something to numb her senses as well while they talked around her.

"Subject's ready... is the test?"

"Project 191694518 is ready for testing."

"Go ahead."

She knew they injected something into her. She felt it the moment the foreign substance entered her system. Her heart started to race faster and she felt, despite the paralysis, her muscles started to spasm and heard voices calling out to each other in a hurry.

She felt something was very very wrong. And she could do nothing about it. She saw them leaning over her trying to do something, what she didn't know. She was too focused on the burning sensation in her eyes. She wanted to scream but she couldn't. It felt like they were on fire or melting or, or something! They just hurt!

She then started to realize that things were starting to get harder to see and it wasn't them turning out the light. She could only stare as her vision completely disappeared and listened to their loud voices speaking around her start to fade out and everything went numb and cold again.

----

She remembered them coming and pulling her out of that room for the first time in who knew how long now and restraining her and pulling her along down the hall. She didn't fight. How could she?

She couldn't see anymore so it was pointless anyway... She listened to them talk vaguely and listened to the door open and she immediately tensed when she entered the room. Something wasn't right. They led her forward, dragging her at one point and they forced her onto the table and restrained her. She felt them try their paralysis dose again along with the numbing agent.

She heard them talking about her eyes. That they might be able to repair them. She wasn't sure she liked that idea. They confirmed that she should be all set and unable to feel anything and she did feel mildly sleepy and drifted off.

She woke up to something cold and sharp touching her face. What-?! She couldn't scream as she felt it draw across her face just under her eye. She felt the warm blood pool down her face. They started to do the same to the other, saying something about removing them when the heart monitor started beeping loud and fast in spikes.

They started to panic, she heard them yelling at each other. Something about her not supposed to be awake? They felt one of them quickly wipe her face off which stung and wrap something around her eyes. Those cuts felt deep and painful.

They went back to arguing and fighting over something but when she finally realized she had her wits about her, she pulled hard and fast, trying to break loose. And break loose she did. The straps holding her down tore from the strain and she sat there surprised before every inch of her body yelled at her, "RUN!"

She let her legs carry her down the halls blindly. She didn't know where she was going or what to do, only to run. Suddenly she grabbed something heavy. She didn't know what or where it came from but she threw it ahead of her and she heard glass shatter. She ran up to it and stopped, her toes right at the edge.

She felt the wind blow her hair around and the smell was overwhelming, making her step back. She turned and heard them coming.

She turned back to the window, her senses telling her to jump but her logic told her that was certain death.

"Trust me." Her senses pleaded and with that she stepped back and ran and leapt out the window in blind faith and she felt the arms catch her, the voice speak to her, taking her by surprise but her senses immediately whispered, "You are safe."

---

Peter felt himself falling into a worried state, wondering just what had set Kasey off like that. He shook his head, pleading himself to focus on her. He thrusted his hands forward, following where they led him.

There was a rolling tray, and then another, and then there was a cold steel table. He remembered what he knew of Kasey and grimaced. This must've been similar to where she was kept, or exactly like it.

He felt himself searching up the table, until he found Kasey's hand once more. "Kasey, you're safe, please snap out of it." He kept his voice low, this time not raising it or shouting towards her.

Aurora, having heard the commotion and shouting, had hurried towards the center of the room, dodging a few of the knocked over tools and trays. She found her way to the table, by following the sounds of her friends. "What's wrong? I heard a bunch of crashing, and this awful sound."

Kasey's arm tried to flinch away when he took her hand, purely due to the pain that flared when he did. Again, warm liquid filled his hand but she didn't reply this time, just laid there, trying to breathe.

"I think she's having some sort of ptsd induced panic attack. She found something that just shut her down, and I think she hurt herself. I think her hand is bleeding. A lot." Peter explained, trying to focus on Kasey. He wished he could just see her! "Kasey, you hurt yourself pretty bad.."

Aurora frowned and stepped back from the table. "If this is a medical room, maybe there's some gauze around here, or some sort of cloth. I can try to find some to wrap her hand."

Again she didn't answer but her breathing had slowed a little bit, enough to allow a small sob rack through her body. She was still shaking pretty badly as well. But her hand slowly gripped Peter's hand back though it was weak since doing so did kinda hurt.

Peter let out a small sigh of relief. He wasn't happy that she was upset, but he was happy that she was back. "Just sit and rest for a while, alright? That must've taken a toll on you, and we need to fix up your hand."

Aurora managed to find her way to a cabinet, gingerly searching through the drawers in case of sharp objects. Despite their string of bad luck that day, she found a drawer of gauze and gauze pads, along with alcohol wipes. (Of which she knew they were alcohol wipes based on the smell, and the cold, wet feel.) She brought the items back over to the table and softly took Kasey's hand from Peter. "I'm going to try and clean the cut before wrapping it. It will sting a little."

Aurora took one wipe and cleansed her own hands, before getting to work on the wound. She cleansed the area, and put the gauze pads over the cut to protect, before wrapping her hand in the regular gauze to hold it in place. To finish off, she held down the loose end and used a bit of webbing to stick it down.

Kasey flinched but didn't pull away. She was still crying but she mumbled something quietly under her breath. "Off... please..."

"There, all wrapped up." Aurora spoke softly, setting Kasey's hand down. She stepped back, and decided to continue the search for anything that could help them, since she was up anyway.

"Off..?" Peter questioned. "Off the table? Is that what you want?" He asked, reaching out to help her up if that's what she wanted.

She gave a small nod, not that he could see it and a soft, "Mhmm..." Her senses were still screaming but she reached out and found Peter and carefully got up off the table. Her legs felt like jelly but she refused to just drop her whole weight onto Peter without warning. "...tired..." She mumbled softly. "Can't... sleep... not... safe..."

Peter made sure to hold tightly onto her. Not tight enough to hurt, but enough to keep her steady. "We need to get out of here. I don't want you guys getting more hurt than you already are..." He knew that reaction had probably sucked the energy right out of her. "If you recognize this area, do you know the way out from here?"

She stood there for a moment, thinking but her head was fuzzy now. Everything was just muddled. She shook her head. "Can't think..." She replied. "Don't... don't think it's the same place... feels... different." She tried to explain. "Like... someone moved everything slightly to the left-" She sounded exhausted as she slowly was starting to lean on Peter more.

Everything was exhausting but she couldn't stop. If she stopped they'd catch them and if they caught them then they'd- She quickly forced that train of thought to shut down, feeling the panic rise again. Not now. Too tired.

Peter shifted his weight, to keep up with Kasey's shifting. He knew they had to get out of there, and fast. However, two of them were freshly blind, and their veteran blind team member seemed close to passing out.

"I think I found another door, opposite of the one we came in. This one isn't as secure however.." Aurora spoke aloud. "We might want to keep moving."

Kasey tilted her head to listen to Aurora before sighing softly. "...give me a minute." She closed her eyes taking deep steady breaths as she pulled up the last memory of the room layout and carefully moved around the room, trying to see if it was at all similar.

It took a minute but... she got them to line up. A few things were missing or slightly different but she could see a bit better. She stomped her foot a bit and felt the vibrations travel through the room, highlighting different things.

What caught her attention was a computer, a very secure cabinet with a lot of liquid vials inside, and a filing cabinet all near to each other.

She moved towards it and placed her hand on the cabinet. She lightly tapped her fingers and snesed the liquid vibrate. She frowned and bit and fought with the doors for a moment before breaking them open, a few of the vials, she now realized, shaking dangerously.

She took one and hesitated. She opened it, held it a safe distance away and sniffed at it a bit. She tensed up and nearly dropped it but quickly caught it. A bit spilt on the floor however.

She closed it and stood there. She set a few aside for now. She moved to the computer and felt around, trusting they saved the last bit of data they had at the time and shut it off.

She pulled plugs loose and dragged it to safety. She then did the same to the filing cabinet and took the vials before pulling and slamming the cabinet to the ground, a loud shattering sound echoing in the room.

Peter stood nearby, in case Kasey needed him again. His spider sense peaked for a moment, just before the cabinet came crashing down to the floor. He flinched from the sound, his hands flying over his ears. "Warn me next time..?"

Aurora jumped from the crash, pressing a hand against her chest. "Ouch." She carefully made her way towards the sound, feeling broken glass push against the soles of her shoes. "What was that stuff? That you knocked over?"

Kasey flinched a bit at their comments. "Sorry..." she hated the chemical smell that was now in the room but she knew it wouldn't hurt them. "Stuff they don't need to have." She answered vaguely, there wasn't really time for that. "Can you web these up? Tony might get some use out of them." She placed three vials in Aurora's hands.

"Also any idea how to go about taking a computer's data without breaking the whole thing?" She asked. "I'm positive it's important. This whole room was important." She explained a bit.

She dug through the files, feeling over them carefully. Each tab she could make out some of the words since they had dented the paper when they were written on but she froze when she found one and hesitated before pulling it out and tucking it under her arm and checking the rest only to pull another.

Aurora took the vials and began to web them individually, before putting them together and webbing them together. She had encased them so that they would be much less likely to break if dropped or otherwise damaged.

"Yeah, actually. You don't need the whole computer, just the tower. The monitor just displays the data." Peter explained, making his way over to the computer. The tower wasn't huge, so it wouldn't be terribly difficult to carry.

"Great, Aurora, think you can make something to carry it easier? Like a backpack or something?" She asked, running her fingers over the folder tabs again.

There were too many files to bring with them but these two she deemed the most important.

"It's gonna be a little awkward on the back, but yeah. Peter, do me a favor and turn around." Aurora told him, heading over to where the computer was. She stuck the vials to a shelf for the time being, and placed the monitor square on Peter's back. Using her webs, she was able to cover it completely and attach four corners to his back. "You've got shorter hair, so it won't get stuck in the webbing."

Kasey gave a small chuckle. "Didn't even think of that. It's better on the back until you guys can see so your hands are free." She explained. She looked at the filing cabinet and hesitated but upon hearing them start banging on the locked door, she left it be and tucked the folders into her shirt as she had no other place for them at the moment. She grabbed their hands and pulled them towards the other door. "Time to go-"

Aurora webbed the grouping of vials, snapping them back into her grasp as she was pulled towards the door. "God I can't wait to get out of here." She groaned.

Peter went forward, following after Kasey. He was beginning to get used to walking without seeing, and had been pretty good about not tripping over his own feet so far.

"You two okay with the idea of leaping out the window if we find one? Cause I'm not sure the front door is an option-"

"If it's between that and staying here, I'm A-ok with that." Aurora replied, flexing her wrists to prepare herself, after all, she might have to use them to catch her and her friends.

"I wouldn't say that I'm okay with that idea, but if we have no other choice.." Peter sighed. "I'd be down."

Kasey nodded at that. "We will try to avoid it but we may not get an option." She led them through the halls quickly but quietly listening to the vibrations from their footsteps to navigate.
