Chapter 99
Aurora went over to Claire, standing in front of her, between Matt and Claire. Now she knew why her senses had gone off like that. At least, she thought she knew why. This guy wasn't their Matt, she was sure of it.
Claire's eyes were wide with fear as she watched him change before her very eyes, her heart racing wildly in her chest.
That's not Matt- That is NOT her Matt-
"M-matt-?" Her voice shook nervously.
But if this wasn't her Matt... then what happened to him?
The red headed Matt growled under his breath, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. It was as if he had healed, or been replaced completely, leg and all. "And how, pray tell, do you know who I am?" He stalked towards the girls. "And why don't I know you?"
He heard Claire's heart start to race faster as she pushed to her feet, putting her good hand on Aurora's shoulder and pulling her back a few steps.
"I-I am wondering the same thing-" Claire replied, watching the way he carried himself.
They needed to put distance between themselves and him cause while she may not have spider sense- she sure as hell can read body language.
The quickening of Claire's heart filled him with an instinctual glee. Like a predator stalking this prey. For all he knew, these guys could have captured him somehow, brought him here, wherever this is. He chuckled darkly, figuring they must've not known who he truly was, and just how dangerous he could truly be.
He quickly shortened the distance between himself and the girls, lunging at them. Another glitch threw him off his path, and he smacked into a cabinet beside them.
Aurora yelped in surprise and took Claire's good hand, tugging her towards the door. "We've gotta get out of here. Maybe Tony will have an explanation!"
Claire stumbled, glanced back at Matt, the fear mixing with concern and worry for the Matt she knew as she ran after Aurora. "He's down the hall to the right at the end of the hall!" She quickly told her.
Aurora wanted to make sure not to outrun Claire, but she found that her real issue would be falling behind. Spine injuries really were no joke. So much for taking it slow.
Matt heaved himself up and away from the cabinet, letting out a loud shout of frustration. That cursed glitching was ruining everything! It was throwing him way off the mark! He took off from the room, hearing the girls' quickened steps running down the hall. He turned in that direction and pursued them.
Claire heard him start pursuing them and swore. "Friday! Give Tony a heads up that we're coming in hot!" She called out as she made sure Aurora kept moving.
As soon as Matt took off into the hallway, his shoes seemed to lose their friction, and he slipped and slid straight into the opposite wall. How was he getting such beatings from inanimate objects??
He let out another growl of frustration. If he only had his katana, he would've dealt with them back in the medical room. He once again took off after the two, digging his heels into the floor.
Aurora dared to glance back, noticing both his crash and his recovery. She would've laughed and quipped at his crash, if it weren't for the fact that a rabid blind man was hunting them like a wolf.
Claire pulled her around the corner and down the next hallway, panting a bit heavily as she ran with Aurora. "Almost there!" She told her as they rapidly approached where Tony and Kasey were.
"Tony!" Aurora called out to him, hoping to grab his attention. "We've got a rabid bogey on our tail!"
Matt continued after them. He wasn't slipping as bad, and seemed to be getting a hang of running in the new environment. If he didn't catch them before they got to this 'Tony' guy, he'd just have to take down him too.
Tony had made sure they had a clear path inside the room but when he saw Matt turn the corner, he felt a chill go down his spine. "Shit!" He swore as he activated his armor.
Claire kept running but she felt Aurora stumble and stopped to help her. "Come on-?!"
Aurora tumbled, a sharp cry coming from her as she fell. In the blur of motion she could've sworn she saw the devil in his eyes.
Matt lunged again, grabbing ahold of Claire's arm. He pulled, trying to pull her up onto her feet. "It's not very nice to run off like that."
Claire gasped sharply, also seeing the predatory, demonic glint to his glazed over eyes. "A-and it's not very nice-" She struggled to pull free of him. "To grab people like this!"
Tony ran up to Aurora and pulled her away and to her feet. "Get inside and get ahold of Spidey and Kade-"
Aurora gripped onto Tony, shakily motioning towards Matt. "I don't know who he is but he's not our Matt!"
Matt kept his grip tight on her, tilting his head towards Tony. Sounded like something metallic. He turned his attention back to Claire. "Don't be like that, I just want to know why I'm here."
Tony nodded at her. "I'll handle it. Go!" He told her, motioning his head towards the vent in the ceiling.
Claire's heart was racing as she panted for breath. "I-I know about as much as you do-" She replied. "As far as I can tell? You and my friend swapped places-" She couldn't pull free as he had a grip on her broken wrist.
"And you certainly don't act like that's all you want." She hissed at him as she panted for breath.
Tony aimed his repulsors at him but it would be too dangerous to fire while he had Claire. "Let her go!" He demanded.
Aurora was quick to climb up the wall and slide into the vents. She cursed at the increased movement, but continued on to find Peter and Kade.
"Well all I know is I woke up in this damn place attached to a monitor, feeling like I was being ripped to pieces. And you were there. How was I supposed to take that?" He seethed into her ear, before snapping his head up towards Tony. "Or what? You'll fry her?" He sneered. Whoever this guy was, he seemed to take on some sort of heroic role. "I'd like to see you try. Well, you know what I mean anyway." He spoke condescendingly.
Tony narrowed his eyes. "You don't have to do this-" He tried but he doubted that would work with him. He could tell it from his movements that he knew what he was doing. Regardless of being blind.
Claire struggled against him before grunting and trying to swing at his jaw when he looked towards Tony.
Matt chuckled and moved just enough so she grazed him. "You little-" Something sharp pressed into her back, as Matt had produced some sort of sharp object from who knows where.
"Let's not try that again, alright?" He pressed a bit harder, once again turning to Tony. "Maybe she can't tell me, so I'll ask you. How did I get here?"
Claire gasped when she felt it press against her back and he heard her heart pick up a bit faster.
Tony gritted his teeth as Friday relayed the footage to him in the suit. "It appears that you swapped places with a friend of ours due to..." He tried to think of how to explain it. "Well, for lack of a better term, Glitching." He answered, keeping his aim on him.
Matt irked a brow, not out of confusion, but out of interest. He kept the knife pressed against Claire, but continued to talk to Tony. "Glitched in?" He sneered again, letting out a twisted laugh. Oh this was so exciting! Much better than what he had assumed had happened. "Isn't that something..."
Tony watched him cautiously. "Look, we can help send you back but we can't do that if you're gonna keep attacking us."
Claire hated this. This was NOT the Matt she knew. He would NEVER do this...
Matt hummed behind her, seemingly toying with the idea. Did he really want to go back? This world's Matt seemed like such a goody two shoes. Maybe he could have a new challenge here. Build up a whole new empire from scratch. Oh that sounded nice. "I don't know, I think I'm beginning to like it here. So many new people I've yet to meet and all."
Tony narrowed his eyes. "Alright, let me rephrase that. You are going back." He said more firmly, bracing his stance.
Claire could only sit and wait, praying he'd stop and let her go.
"What? But I thought we were just getting to know each other. Tony. Tony." He played out the name, humming in thought. "Yes. I could get used to that. You'd make a great man to work under me."
"Oh, where are my manners? I've been completely ignoring one of my new friends." He slowly pressed the tip of the blade against her, dragging it tauntingly up her back. "I think I'm gonna like it here."
Tony looked confused by that but didn't change his stance, the hum of his repulsor filling the hall. "Let her go. Now. I won't ask again."
Claire froze, feeling the blade drag up her back and hearing it cut through the fabric of her shirt, just shy of cutting her. Tears filled her eyes as she cried to stay calm but holy shit, she was TERRIFIED.
And he knew it.
"Ah ah." Matt spoke, his mouth turning up into a grin. "I know your types. What will you do? Go through her to get to me?" He asked, thoroughly enjoying himself. All of this made him realize how dull his usual routine back home had become. If he stayed here, maybe he could start everything over again. His hair stood on need just thinking about it.
He stopped dragging the blade up her back, this time pressing the tip against her to break the skin, just barely. "Why don't you tell your buddy that we'll be going for a walk?"
Tony took a slight step forward. "I don't have to go through her at all." He replied, debating his options. He wasn't sure if potentially killing this Matt meant they'd never see the other again... They had to be careful.
Claire gasped a bit, feeling it prick her. She couldn't speak, the words just got stuck in her throat as she looked at Tony, eyes begging for him to figure something out.
Matt heard Tony move forward, and violently pulled the two of them backwards. He scowled, thinking over what Tony had said. He couldn't detect that it was a lie, so maybe it was about time he booked it. "I believe we'll be taking our leave now, Tony."
Claire gave a small cry of surprise when he pulled her back.
Tony didn't move and simply crossed his arms. "Friday, lock down the building."
"Locking down!" A voice chirped up, seemingly from all around him as he heard various heavy metal sounding plates start blocking places off at a rapid pace.
"Shit-" Matt cursed, listening as the building suddenly began shutting down. He pulled the knife away from Claire's back, expertly throwing it up into the hallway light. He turned and booked it back down the hallway, hoping to find an exit before everything shut down.
Claire cried out when the light shattered but scrambled away from him.
Tony helped her up and got her to go to the room where Kasey was before walking after Matt, the clangs of the suit echoing in the hall.
He nearly made it out only for it to be sealed off and there were no other exits and Tony now stood in front of his only exit out of that area of the hall. "Nice try, hotshot. But like I said. You're not going anywhere except home."
Matt heard the clangs of the suit pursuing him, and felt a dark chuckle rise out of the back of his throat. So that was it, he was cornered then. "Oh but we would make such a great team together, you and I."
"Maybe back when I dealt with shady assholes like you." He replied, coldly. "But I've learned my lesson from that." He aimed the repulsor at him and fired.
Matt ducked down, pulling out another blade from god knows where and going straight for the face portion of Tony's suit. Maybe he'd be able to puncture the eye portions...
Tony jumped back, using his jets to move faster and blasted at him again.
Matt dodged, or he tried to, but the blast seared his side. He cried out and groaned, pressing his free hand to his side. "Consider my offer rescinded." He lunged at Tony again, really wishing he had his cane right now.
