Chapter 96
They heard the phone ring from the kitchen and Claire stood up. "I'll get it." She told him as she left the room and brought it back to him.
Matt took the phone from her, composing himself before answering it. He didn't want to sound too out of it to whoever was calling. "Hello?"
"Hey Matt," Karen's voice greeted him. "I was calling to check on you and Kasey. How are you guys holding up?"
Karen. It felt like forever since he talked to her, but in reality it had only been a day or so. "We're doing fine." In the case that Karen might've wanted to come over, he followed with: "Might've caught a bug or something though. Kasey's sleeping it off."
"Oh no... do you guys need anything? I'd be happy to make you guys something if you want." She offered.
Claire knew it must've been Karen when Matt hid the truth.
That wasn't the response he expected, although he should've. "No, that's alright. I think it's pretty contagious cause it jumped right over to me. I don't want you catching it." He told her quickly.
He could practically hear her wince. "Yikes... I'll give Foggy a heads up for you. You two get some rest, okay?" She told him, her voice laced with concern.
"Yeah, we will. And thank you." Matt told her earnestly. She was always caring for him, like a sister he never had.
"Of course. Keep me updated, okay? I'll talk to you soon."
"Talk to you soon." He repeated, before ending the call. He let out a sigh and set the phone aside. "It was Karen. She was just calling to check up on us."
"I figured. And technically, you weren't lying seeing as Kasey has been sick..." she noted with a small sigh.
"That's true. Poor kid." He shook his head softly.
Kasey was still asleep beside them, unresponsive to their conversation.
"I really hope things will settle down for her soon... it's hard to see her in so much pain..."
"She shouldn't have to go through any of this." Matt said, keeping an ear out for Kasey, in case of any change.
"She shouldn't." She agreed and gently ran her hand through Kasey's hair, a soft hum coming from her in her sleep.
Matt listened to Kasey still, and reached for his phone. "Maybe I should call Tony, see how he's progressing."
Claire nodded. "I think that's a good idea... We may need that room sooner than we thought..."
"Sooner would be better than later." He picked up the phone, flipping through the contacts until he heard Tony's name, and called him.
Tony was doing a few more tests until his phone rang. He quickly answered. "Hey, what's up?" He asked, looking over the data he was getting.
"Tony, please tell me you've made some sort of progress. Kasey had another glitching episode, worse than the other one." Matt explained, hoping that Tony had the room ready.
"Shit." Tony swore under his breath. "Yeah- I've made great progress and it seems to be working." He told him. "I can send Happy to come pick you guys up," He offered.
Matt was surprised, but then again Tony was pretty much a genius. "Please do. As quick as you can."
"On it." He agreed before hanging up and sending Happy the address.
It was about five minutes later that his phone buzzed saying he was there and coming up to help carry her to the car.
Matt chuckled lightly, tucking his phone into his pocket. "Either he was in the area, or he broke all speed laws known to man." Matt joked, pushing off of the bed to gather some things to bring with them.
Claire chuckled. "Honestly? I wouldn't blame him." She replied as he came up and poked his head in as the door was still open.
"Hello?" He called out and Claire poked her head out.
"Happy?"
"Yeah, Claire I assume?"
She nodded. "Kasey's in here." She led him into the bedroom and his eyes softened when he saw her fast asleep.
"I'll carry her to the car." He told them, gently scooping her up and heading to the door while Claire helped Matt with his crutch.
"I'm not even going to ask how you got here so fast." Matt told Happy, gathering himself up. He took the crutch from Claire, leaning on it. He was getting used to the constant pain in his leg by now, but it was still an annoyance.
"Yeah, I, uh, wouldn't answer either." He replied back as he headed down the stairs, Claire helping Matt along.
"Hey, maybe I can give you a proper check up for the first time." She teased him lightly.
Matt relied on Claire to help him down the stairs, not wanting to slip. "Yeah, we really haven't had the time huh? All of this sort of distracts from the little things like a broken leg."
"Oh, more than that. Tony probably has hospital tech so I could actually tend to you completely." She chuckled. "Technically, it's not a hospital." She pointed out with a small grin. "And I'm sure he wouldn't question it if I asked, seeing as you were bit recently too."
"True. And he'd probably be busy taking care of Kasey." He had to remind himself that getting himself taken care of would help Kasey in the long run. The faster he healed, the faster he'd be able to help her more.
She nodded. "It's actually really convenient as unfortunate as this all is." She noted as they reached the bottom floor and she led him outside and to the car.
Happy had already gotten Kasey situated inside.
"You're not wrong." Matt said simply, heading over to the car. "At least she can be with her friends again too, in a safe space."
"Hopefully that'll help her heal too." Claire agreed as she helped him inside and then sat beside him as Happy got in the driver's seat.
It seemed that the only two safe spaces left in this city were his apartment, and the Tower. Matt tried to get somewhat comfortable in the car, being able to feel everything after all. "Try and get us there quickly as well."
"Will do." Happy replied with a nod as he started up the car and headed back towards the tower.
And another five minutes and they were back and Happy was carrying Kasey to the elevator while Claire helped Matt walk over to it. Her eyes were darting everywhere, taking everything in. After all, she never thought she'd end up being here.
Matt once again relied on Claire to mostly guide him. "Don't worry, it's just another high rise building." Filled with an immense amount of expensive tech.
"Oh, I'm not worried. I just never thought I'd step foot in this place." She chuckled as they stepped into the elevator which Claire was immensely grateful for.
"True. I don't think many people get the chance." Matt admitted, glad to be taking an elevator for once. It was a much more welcome way of moving than his apartment's rickety stairs.
Happy took them to the lab floors and led them down to where Tony was.
Tony turned to them and his eyes widened when he saw how pale Kasey was in Happy's arms. "Shit. She looks rough..." He mumbled but took her into his arms. "Happy, can you get them a place to sit?"
"Yeah." He agreed and wandered off to find some chairs.
"Now, I've only tested this thing on various objects and a few food items so I, uh... don't exactly know how it'll react with her but all the tests were positive so I'm hoping this is the same." He explained to them.
"It's better to try it than to let her suffer through another one of those episodes." Matt spoke solemnly. He was worried about her to no end, but he didn't want the distortions to go on for any longer. "Please just try to help her."
He nodded and brought her into the room and laid her on the bed and then sealed the room. "Alright... Supposedly the data I got is the settings for her universe so I'm gonna slowly start shifting it over and see what happens." He explained before carefully starting to change the room's frequency.
Kasey seemed to be okay at first but started to shift around and Matt could hear her heart start to race but then she jerked awake with a sharp gasp, starting to panic, distortions starting to come off her as she hissed in pain.
Tony's eyes widened when he saw them and started trying to adjust it to make them slow but it seemed to only get worse no matter what changes he made. "Shit! I can't tell if it's just because she's panicked or if it's not working at all!"
"She's panicking, but it also sounds like there's distortions too." Matt frowned, listening to Tony as he kept messing with the adjustments. "Just quit messing with them! Let her adjust, then change it. Try doing it bit by bit."
Tony hesitated but stopped, watching as it just kept getting worse and worse, Kasey crying in pain as it tore through her and she glitched but stayed within the confines of the room.
Tony started to make an adjustment and watched it slowly start to calm back down from really bad. "Okay... That's progress..." He waited and went a bit more and it calmed more.
Kasey was still shaking and crying, looking dizzy and pale as the distortions slowed but as they slowed, the racing of her heart also started dropping down a bit below normal.
Matt listened and cursed, finding that he was frustrated he couldn't be doing more to help. He was basically putting his full trust in Tony at this point. "Her heart is dipping below normal again."
Claire and Tony both turned to him in surprise but for very different reasons.
Tony started to ask when he noticed Kasey continuing to stabilize and adjusted a bit more, seeing much more progress but her heartbeat was still slow.
Claire glanced between them with uncertainty, knowing Tony wasn't going to just leave that alone but... She would absolutely throw hands if he got upset with Matt.
Matt continued to teeter on the edge of anxiety and worry, straining himself to hear Kasey. He had to know she was okay. Hearing that she was progressing instead of regressing, Matt let out a small sigh. Perhaps things would turn out alright. It was about time they all got some rest. Uninterrupted by distortions.
Tony carefully kept adjusting but suddenly she started to distort again and he quickly went back and waited for them to slow to a stop before trying a different path only for her to cry out in pain as another tore through her, much more violently this time which had Tony quickly backpedaling until it became steady again.
"O-Okay... this seems to be a safe spot here so I'm going to let her sit here for a bit." Tony told them with a sigh, turning to them.
However Matt could only hear her heart slowing more.
Matt waited and listened, her heart not matching what Tony was talking about. The distortions thankfully seemed stable, but her heart wasn't. When was this going to end? He continued to listen, before shaking his head in frustration. "Her heart is still slowing."
Tony looked a bit confused but turned to look at Kasey just in time to see her faint, collapsing back onto the bed. "Shit!" He looked at the panel, trying to figure out what was wrong as it kept slowing down.
Claire came over, starting to move towards the door but Tony turned to her. "Don't!" He warned her. "We can't go in while it's like this. It'll risk us going through what she's been going through." He explained.
Matt turned to Tony, knowing he'd regret doing this down the line, if it happened like he wanted. "Let me go in there. I can sit with her and try to calm her down. Maybe what she needs right now is someone to be with her." He knew the distortion thing was no joke, but he'd been through hell and back before, so he believed he'd be able to take it.
Claire whirled around to face him, her eyes wide. "What?! Matt, no!" She argued. "It's too dangerous!"
Tony nodded in agreement with Claire. "And you're already not in the best of shape," He pointed out. "Going in there is pretty much risking getting seriously hurt or possibly killed due to this stuff."
"I know that. I know it's dangerous, and I know I could get hurt. But look at her!" He ignored the irony of his demand. "If we don't do something, she's going to be the one possibly killed."
Tony hesitated, glancing back at Kasey before reluctantly agreeing. "I'm not to blame if anything happens." He told him as he had Claire rejoin him and guide Matt to the door. "There's a small sealed hallway so that it doesn't cause interference when people come or go if it's not set to this universe's frequency. So I'll let you in there and the door will close behind you and then the next one will open."
Claire watched anxiously, glancing at Kasey's unconscious form. This was risky... They could lose both of them...
"No, it won't be your fault. Either of yours." Matt assured them both. He picked up on Claire's worry and hesitated by the door. He turned towards her, giving her a smile. "Don't worry. I'll be back before you know it."
Claire hesitated but gave a small nod back. "O-Okay..." She replied.
Tony opened the first door for him. "Ready when you are." He told him.
Matt nodded towards Tony and stepped inside. He moved carefully so as to not injure himself, and found that he wasn't destabilizing.
Yet.
