Chapter 83

Meanwhile, Matt was checking on Kasey. "Kasey? You doing alright in there?" He asked, grabbing his crutch and readying himself to go check on her.

There was no response but he could hear her heartbeat and breathing. She sounded awake just... not responding.

Claire frowned and moved to help Matt if needed. "Kasey?"

Still no response.

"I can hear her heartbeat and all that, but she's just... silent." Matt stood, leaning on the crutch. He gratefully accepted Claire's help, and made his way over to the bathroom door to knock on it. He had to try and ignore the bitter smell of the puke. "Kasey, Tony wants to come by to help you. He's not going to take you." He kept his phone on him, waiting for the voice message.

His phone vibrated with a text message from Tony with the voice message attached to it.

Kasey heard Matt and he heard her heartbeat pick up a little bit. She quickly pushed her emotions back down, keeping them suppressed as she hesitated before scooting to the wall beside the door instead so they could come in if they wanted.

She had cleaned up best she could after being sick and she just sat on the floor, numb and tired.

"I made sure to get it in his words, so you'd know he was being truthful about it." He pushed the door open, but stayed in the doorway so as to not crowd her. That, and he was leaning against it. He held his phone out, playing the recording.

"Hey Kase, Matt told me what's going on and suggested finding a way to stabilize you. In order for me to do that, I gotta come run some tests on you but I promise, if you still want to stay there, you can. I'm not going to take you unless absolutely necessary. If you're more comfortable there, that's fine. I just want to try to help keep you safe." Tony's voice spoke from the phone, making Kasey tilted her head slightly, listening.

"I'm sorry I've been making this so stressful but you haven't let me try to explain anything either. I really do just want to help and keep you safe... I hope you're alright. See you soon, hopefully." The voice message ended.

Kasey sat there, silently as Claire stayed close to Matt, watching.

Matt listened to the voice message as well. He had to admit, Tony seemed to have calmed down some, and he was glad to hear that he wanted to work with them on this. "Tony might be the only one who can make some sort of stabilizing agent for you. Is it okay if he comes by?"

Kasey didn't respond for a minute before nodding slowly but that was her only response.

Claire frowned a bit but was relieved to see her agree.

Matt had to use the reaction from Claire to discern what Kasey's decision was. "I'll go ahead and let him know. Just know I'll be with you the whole time." He sent a quick ok message to Tony.

She didn't respond and Claire frowned as she noticed how dull her eyes looked and placed a hand on Matt's shoulder.

"She looks really out of it..." she quietly pointed out.

Matt turned his head towards Claire to listen, before stepping into the bathroom. He put his arm around Kasey's shoulder and nudged her towards the door. "C'mon, you can lay down until Tony gets here. Maybe that will help."

Kasey hesitated but got to her feet carefully and followed him out into the living room, still not responding verbally to them.

Claire frowned seeing how pale she looked and dull, distant look to her eyes. Even blind she had always had more life and energy to them then she did now.

Matt led her out into the living room, carefully guiding her towards the couch again. "Claire, can you grab her a glass of water?" He could feel the difference in her stance, the change in the way she walked.

"Y-yeah." Claire went to the sink and filled a glass for her and came back over as she sat down on the couch, just kind of... staring at the floor, not even trying to keep up her act.

Matt crouched in front of Kasey, taking her small hands in his. "Kasey, we're going to fix this, alright?"

She didn't react to him at all. Her hands hung limp in his own, her gaze not leaving its downward tilt.

She didn't react to Claire either who just set the glass down. "Kasey? Can you hear us?"

The very subtle tilt of her head confirmed she could but aside from that, nothing.

"Kasey, we really need you to come back to us. We won't be able to figure this out without you. We need you." Matt insisted, speaking warmly.

Kasey didn't react to him at all.

Nothing.

Claire was getting worried. "Kasey, please-" She gently squeezed her shoulder, making Kasey tense a little bit but that was it.

"Kasey.." Matt tried again. He waited, and then reached his hand up to feel her forehead. She didn't seem feverish, but he was worried nonetheless. He tilted her head towards his direction, praying that she'd come back to her senses.

Claire watched only for her eyes to widen as Kasey didn't react and her usually bright energized eyes now dull and almost lifeless, pierced through Matt as if he wasn't even there, not even trying to focus on him at all.

And he felt it pierce through him.

She didn't say a word. Her slow breathing never changed, her heartbeat stayed slower but consistent.

Claire looked concerned and hesitantly touched his shoulder. "...Matt?"

Matt was frozen in place, his brows knitted together in uncertainty. It was odd, he knew he was looking at her, and she was looking at him, but why could he feel her gaze? It was cold, and sharp as a knife. He felt Claire touch him and flinched, keeping his head facing Kasey.

"It's like she's empty..."

Claire's eyes softened, looking at Kasey as well. "It's like she just... shut down..." the thought upset her greatly.

They had been making such good progress and now...

She was sealed up tight and unresponsive...

Matt finally tore his gaze away from Kasey, shaking his head lightly. "I think we should wait until Tony comes."

Claire sighed but nodded. "Alright..."

It took about ten minutes for him to get to Matt's, landing on the roof.

Claire looked up and headed upstairs to get him.

Kasey didn't even flinch at the noise.

Matt turned his head towards the roof access. It was unnerving, how cold Kasey seemed, and now how Tony was back at his apartment.

Tony came down the stairs with Claire. "How is she?" He asked as he started to come over.

"Not great. After I called you, I checked on her..." Matt motioned to her. "She was like this. Like she completely shut down."

Tony set his bag down on the table and came over. "Kasey?"

But she didn't acknowledge him at all.

"And she's been like this since you hung up?" He asked, getting concerned as he tried to get a response from her of some kind.

"Yeah, even when I played your recording she barely reacted." Matt explained, getting up from his position to take a new spot in one of the nearby chairs. "She's like an empty shell."

Tony sighed as Kasey refused to react. "That or a tightly sealed off one..." He replied as he went through his bag, bringing it over.

"Kasey, I'm going to run some tests, alright?" He told her but there wasn't a response.

He sighed and hooked her up to a few things to take some readings and then tied a ribbon around her arm and moved to draw some blood only for Kasey to very suddenly come to life out of no where and tried to get away from him.

However she ended up getting stuck deep in the leg with it as she jumped up, knocking a few of the devices to the ground and unplugging them as she latched to the ceiling, a glitch rippling through her but she didn't make a sound.

Just stuck to the ceiling, pulled the needle from her leg and threw it at them blindly and it ended up flying at Matt.

Matt didn't like how Kasey was so unresponsive, but had no choice but to wait on the sidelines. Just as he thought everything was the same as it had been for the past hour or so, Kasey had suddenly flung herself to the ceiling. Matt stood with surprise, before hearing something whistle through the air. It sounded thin, possibly metal. All of these thoughts happened in the blink of an eye, and he ducked, hearing the object whizz past him. "What the-"

He heard it pin itself to the wall behind him but only just.

Tony stared up at her in surprise. "Kasey?"

She didn't reply but stared down at them, her heart rate evening back out within seconds from the small spike.

"Kasey, please come down," Tony pleaded with her but she stayed pinned on the ceiling.

Claire watched the needle go flying and had Matt not dodged, it would've embedded itself into his chest instead. Her heart was racing as she watched Tony try to call her down.

Matt found his way over to Claire's side. He listened to what he thought was Kasey's heartbeat. He couldn't explain it, but it just sounded... off. "Kasey, we need you to come down so we can help you, like we discussed earlier?"

She just stared towards them from the ceiling. Not a word leaving her mouth.

Tony took a slight step back. "Okay... Uh... do you have a broom or something?"

Claire gave him a look. "You're not using a broom to get her down."

"Well, what's your idea cause she's not responding!"

Claire slowly stepped forward. "Kasey? Can you come down?" She asked and Kasey's head tilted a little. "Please? We want to help."

Nope. She's not going anywhere.

Claire sighed. "Come on, please? Look, just take my hand, okay? I'll catch you," she offered, holding her hand up towards her and Kasey watched her closely.

Very slowly, Kasey reached out towards her hand and Claire held her breath before Kasey suddenly had a tight grip on her wrist.

She gave a sharp gasp of surprise. "Kasey, let go just a little okay? It's a little tight-" She screamed in pain however when Kasey only tightened her grip and almost started to lift her off the ground by her wrist.

"Shit! Kasey let go! You're hurting me!" She cried, trying to pull free of her.

Matt was so very close to smacking Tony upside the head at the broom comment. Of course, to hit him with suck force and accuracy would definitely out Matt, so he resisted.

Matt waited and listened. It seemed Kasey was moving now, so that was good- Okay, maybe the broom wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Matt stepped forward and reached above Claire to grasp at Kasey's hand. "Kasey! You're hurting Claire!" He tried to get through to her.

Kasey didn't respond but when he grabbed her, her head snapped to look at him and she released Claire, only to latch onto him instead, grabbing onto his right wrist like she did Claire's, pain flared through it as she tightened her grip.

Her other hand gripped his upper left arm, making the lingering burn hiss in pain as she lifted him off his feet.

Claire's eyes widened. "Matt!"

Tony was quickly digging through his bag, searching for something to help.

Matt tried to pull away from Kasey but was quickly losing his footing, cause him to be unable to pull away. He gritted his teeth as the searing pain shot through his burn. Reaching up, he gripped Kasey's hand tightly, just to try and hold himself up so he wasn't being partially held by his injured shoulder. "Kasey! Snap out of it!"

This wasn't right. This wasn't her.
