Chapter 81
It was about three in the afternoon when Kasey finally started to actually wake up again.
She had stirred on and off but Matt reassuring her that she was still safe had her drifting back off pretty quickly.
She hummed softly as she came to. She still was cuddled up against Matt, almost just curled into a ball against his chest.
Matt had been nodding off as he waited for Kasey to fully wake up. Luckily, he had managed to wake himself up every time. He heard her begin to stir, and realized this one was different than her stirring from before.
"Hey there, you feeling okay?" Matt asked softly, brushing some of her hair to the side.
She hummed again and gave a small nod. "I... I think so... still kinda... out of body feeling???" She tried to explain. "But I'm okay." She confirmed.
"That's good." Matt nodded, relieved to hear that. She sounded better too. Any trace of static or glitchy-ness had dissipated from her voice, and she seemed stable. For now at least.
"You sound better. You had me worried there for a second." Matt told her. They weren't out of the woods yet, but for now they seemed okay.
She gave a weak chuckle. "I had myself worried too." She lightly joked but sighed. "But... if that's really what Tony has been so anxious about..." She frowned. "Then there's really not a choice of not going back, is there?"
Matt frowned, leaning his head back against the couch. "I wanted to wait until you were awake to talk about this with you, but I was thinking of contacting Tony about that glitch thing. Maybe we can try and find a way to stabilize you instead of sending you back."
Kasey tensed up a bit at the thought of contacting Tony but heard him out, tilting her head slightly at the idea. "Stabilize me?" She repeated, as her mind processed the idea. Something sounded familiar about that. Just whispers in the back of her mind. "I... I mean it's an idea," She agreed. "But... is it one he's willing to risk?"
"I don't know, I haven't asked him yet. I wanted to make sure you were okay with it before doing so." Matt explained. Now that he knew what was really going on, maybe he'd be able to work with Tony instead of fighting against him.
Kasey seemed hesitant. "... What if he tries to take me if we tell him?" She asked, quietly.
Matt stilled, not sure what would happen if that came to pass. "I don't know. The most I can do is make sure he holds to our original deal if he doesn't agree to find a stabilizer." He admitted.
"Even if he does, it's still potentially impossible... I-" She took a shaky breath. "Wh-what if we can't s-stop it if it h-happens again before he can find a way?" She asked, starting to tremble a bit, her voice very faintly distorting again. "W-What if I-I-"
"Hey, hey." Matt put his arms on her shoulders, wanting to stop that spiral before it began. "Deep breaths, okay? Just like Claire told you." Matt told her, keeping himself cool and collected. "We're going to figure this out. I'm sure of it."
She took a couple of deep, still a bit shaky, breaths as he said, leaning into his touch. "..." She didn't reply as she didn't feel nearly as confident as Matt sounded.
"There, just breathe." Matt told her calmly, running his hand over her back to try and soothe her. He wasn't quite sure how Claire had done it earlier, but he'd try.
Kasey slowly calmed back down as he did his best to help. "...I-" She trailed off, frowning softly. "Thank you..." She said instead, her voice quiet. Had Matt not gotten to know her as well as he had the past few days, he probably wouldn't have thought twice about her hesitance in saying whatever she had started to, or think anything of the way Kasey had pulled into her shell, closing herself off as it wouldn't have been as noticeable...
But despite being blind, Matt could almost see it, but he definitely felt it.
Matt could feel it. Almost like she had curled in on herself, even if it wasn't literal. He creased his brow, wondering why she felt like this, before asking outright. "You okay? Do you want me to get you anything?"
Kasey hesitated, taking another deep breath before a breathy, near silent response came from her. "No..." She refused to let the tears trying to start even begin, refusing to let herself breakdown again.
Matt listened to her carefully, before responding. "You can tell me anything, okay? I don't want you to feel like you have to shut yourself in."
Kasey could only bring herself to nod. She was tensing up a bit, trying not to let her emotions overwhelm her. Her breathing was a bit uneven and shaky and a bit heavier than they should be. She was starting to tremble again, trying to shove her emotions away.
But unlike Peter, Aurora, and Tony, Matt seemed to somehow phase through her defenses like they didn't exist and the gentle nudge was enough to break the tension bubble and she let out a shaky sob, tears finally spilling down her face as she cried, her body trembling.
At first it seemed fine which surprised her but as she continued to cry, her voice started to distort again and she quickly tried to stop but the pain as she glitched again only caused more tears to spill and pained scream to come from her but it was so heavily distorted it was more like loud static.
Another tore through her and this time, Matt felt her vanish from his lap, her weight just vanishing.
At first, Matt welcomed her showing of emotions, and went to further comfort her. He was glad she was able to open up like this around him, until it turned. He heard the distortion first, followed by the scream. He called out to Claire, his voice twinged with emergency.
"Claire! It's happening again!" He wanted to hold onto her, but his heart sank as soon as her weight disappeared. "Kasey?!"
Claire startled awake when Matt called out, the fear in his voice, making her heart race. She quickly pushed herself out of the bed, heading to the door frame only to see Matt sitting on the couch without Kasey and- Oh! She's in the chair on the right? Did she move there???
Kasey was shaking like a leaf, nausea filling her stomach as she landed in the chair, small visual distortions rippling off her as she sobbed, the noise just as distorted. What just happened?!? She gave another staticky scream of pain as another glitch pulled at her seams but not as bad this time.
Claire hurried to her side. "Hey, hey-" She placed her hand on her back, starting to rub it. "Hey, it's okay- Kasey, breathe. In and out- In and out-" She tried and Kasey tried to focus on her, and slowly started to force it back down, trembling as she did.
She finally stopped glitching and stopped crying as well but was still shaking.
Claire sighed in relief. "Hey... it's okay... What happened?" She asked softly but Kasey didn't respond and instead, pulled away from Claire, making Claire pull her hand back as if she'd been bit.
Kasey could sense the confused and slightly hurt body language from Claire but she pushed herself out of the chair and vanished into the bathroom, barely managing to kick the door shut as she promptly emptied her stomach into the sink.
Claire winced at the noise, glancing towards Matt who she could tell was still shaken from what happened as he was visibly shaking. Not much but enough for her to notice.
Matt could hear Kasey not long after she disappeared, but it sounded like she was... a few feet away? Somehow, she was now in the chair by the couch instead of where she had been. "What-?" Matt started, before hearing Claire try to calm her down. Before he could say another word however, Kasey had zipped off to the bathroom.
Matt grimaced, having always found the sound of someone being sick to be unpleasant, to say the least. He was still trying to process everything that happened. "I don't know what happened.. One second she was still sitting with me, the next she glitched and was gone."
Claire looked confused at that and glanced back at the bathroom, concern in her eyes. "And she didn't just... move there on her own?" She asked him.
Matt shook his head, feeling frazzled. She had quite literally disappeared from his hands. "No, she was just... gone."
Claire turned back to him, her heart racing. "That... That might be why she's sick-" She pointed out. "It sounds like she was teleported almost. Like... Like a lag spike or something. I-... This is bad, Matt..." She hesitantly admitted.
Matt groaned, putting his head in his hands. He hated this. "I know-" It was like everything had been getting worse just in the past couple of days. "I think-" He hated to even admit it. "If I'm going to contact Tony about a cure, I need to do it soon."
Claire sighed softly and nodded in agreement. "I think so too... Really soon if this keeps up... If she was forcibly moved to a different location then there's no guarantee where she'd end up if it happened again..."
Kasey had slumped to the floor, leaning against the bathroom door, listening as she tried to calm her nausea down. She felt tears slide down her face silently as she listened before feeling another glitch rip through her body but she suppressed her scream this time and panted softly, rubbing at her face and focused on calming down.
She focused on all her emotions. The good, the bad, all of it- She couldn't risk any of it- She focused on gathering them up into one place mentally and she could feel them trying to resist, tears starting to spill again, a small voice begging her not to do this but she pushed back. She forced them all into a container and shut it, sealing them off and locking them away.
She let out a small shaky gasp as she did, her chest hurting like she just ripped out a part of her. She felt the tears run down her face but not the emotion to go with them. She sat there, staring blankly, her eyes a bit duller as she let herself shut down and close her shell like a clam.
Matt strained his hearing to try and pick up on Kasey. She didn't seem to be getting sick again, and he could still hear her heartbeat. Her heartbeat still sounded off, and he could've sworn he heard the thing skip a beat.
Reluctantly, he pulled out his phone and searched for Tony's contact. He just hoped that he wouldn't regret this further down the line.
