Chapter 74
Aurora had slept in a little later than usual, although she didn't mind one bit. She had woken up a few times during the night just out of uncomfortableness, but had usually fallen asleep shortly after readjusting.
Peter started to stir awake as well and rubbed at his eyes as he yawned at startup, starting to make a small humming noise in the back of his throat but coughed when it irritated his throat.
Aurora grumbled lightly, having heard the cough. She pulled the light cover closer around herself, muttering a response. "Feelin' any better?" She cracked one eye open.
Peter grabbed at his phone. "Kinda... Throat's still not great but not hurting as much."
"Sorry to hear it." Aurora stifled a yawn and rubbed her eyes in an attempt to wash away the grogginess. She remembered all of what had happened the night before and yawned again. "Well, good morning I guess."
"Morning... I wish it was noon." He replied as he continued trying to fully wake up.
She hummed in response and pushed herself up onto a sitting position, leaning back against the headboard. She was still achy, and it seemed the pain medicine had worn off, but it was majorly better than before.
"What about you? How are you doing?" Peter asked, glancing over at her.
"Better than yesterday, that's for sure." She looked over her wounds briefly, just to make sure everything seemed to be healing correctly. A few bruises had shown up by now.
"Good. You think you're up to going over to my place today if you still want to do that?"
She flexed a couple times, finding her wounds to still be sore. However, she was determined to get out of the tower until she cooled off from the arguments of the previous day. "Yeah, I think I'll be able to."
Peter nodded at that and very carefully got up from the bed, wincing a bit but managed to stay standing. "We just have to take it easy for a bit." He typed. "I'll text May and ask her to come pick us up."
Aurora watched him carefully, before attempting herself. She'd be damned if it didn't hurt to swing her legs over the side and stand. "I need to grab my suit kit before we go. I should start working on another one."
"Okay." He nodded along before webbing over one of the walking sticks to use and webbed the other and tossed it to her.
She caught the stick with her hood arm. "Smart." She took the stick and leaned against it, finding it much easier to walk.
He grinned and led her towards the lab, peeking inside and sighed in relief when Tony wasn't there. He stepped inside and looked back at Aurora.
Aurora slowly came after, anxious to get out of there. She didn't know what she'd do if Tony popped up, and the thought made her heart race. She found her way to her suit kit, snatching it up. She also managed to fish a pair of clothes out of the room she used.
Peter waited and looked around a bit as she gathered her stuff but stopped when he spotted Kasey's web shooters. He hesitated before grabbing them and one of his extra backpacks and tossing them inside. He also dipped into his room to change out of his suit. He went back into the lab and looked around a bit more.
"I feel like he knows more about Kasey than he's letting on." Peter commented after a minute. "I just don't know what..."
Aurora changed into something much more comfortable than the torn and stained suit she had on, stuffing the suit into a plastic bag so she could salvage any pieces from it. Thankfully, the mask seemed unharmed. She went back into the lab, hearing Peter.
"You're probably right. No one in their right mind would act like that." She shook her head lightly, and something caught her eye. "Why don't we check that then?" She motioned to a small safe, tucked away under one of the work tables.
Peter turned to it, surprised he had missed it as he approached it and glanced back at her. "...Do you remember the two folders we brought back? Tony only ever showed us the project one." he pointed out. "And the other was Subject 25 right? Which seemed to be Kasey in the computer files."
Aurora hummed in thought. "I think you're right, actually." She came over, kneeling as much as she could to get a closer look at the safe. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
"That he put it in there and that you're gonna try to get it open?" He asked her as he looked at her.
"Ah, you know me so well Peter." She grinned and stepped forward to mess with the electronic lock. She just hoped Tony didn't have it set up with an alarm...
As she attempted to override it with a shock, it instead shocked her back. Peter winced at the sound of the zap. "You okay?"
Aurora shook her hands lightly, still feeling the static under her skin. It fizzled after a short while. "Y-yeah. Just a bit shocking is all." She laughed lightly, before going back to trying to breaking in.
This time around, it clicked as it unlocked after a minute.
Peter blinked before grinning. "Nice!"
"Aha! Much better." She opened the safe door and rifled through the innards. She located a file that looked similar to the one they had seen earlier, and pulled it from the stack. "Think this is it?"
"It looks like it. Says subject 25." He nodded.
"Nice." She took the folder and opened it in front of both of them, so they could both read it. She was intrigued as to what was inside, and quickly delved into it.
Peter leaned over to read it as well.
'Subject 25, young female, blond hair, blue eyes. First subject obtained using project 13211220922518195. It was a successful test in its own right once they stabilized and adjusted to their new surroundings. We almost lost them a couple times in the process. Once we deemed them stable enough, we started our tests. Refer to the test results for more information into the process. They show a lot of promise. We are discussing trying to obtain others the same way. After all, if we can obtain subjects with project 13211220922518195 from here on out, no one would be the wiser.'
"No one would be the wiser..?" Aurora questioned, reading through the file. She could already tell from the start of the file that this was going to be tough to read through.
"Maybe the numbers are a code??" Peter suggested. "And the test results are on the computer I think."
"Maybe, we could try to cross examine them before we leave." She offered. Either way, she pulled her phone out and snapped photos of the file papers before hastily tucking it back where she found it. She'd read the papers off her phone.
"I'll work on getting logged in if possible." he moved over to the computer and started working on it, having Karen assist him. It took a bit of extra effort but he got in and found the last two files they hadn't read last time they had looked. He hesitated. "Are you sure about this?"
Aurora stood back up from where she was crouched, and stared at the computer. After a bit of thought, she nodded. "Yeah, I want to know what got Tony so riled up." In all honesty, it was hard to watch Tony act like that.
Peter took a deep breath and nodded as he clicked 52.
'Test one, Subject 25. Subject was finally stable enough for testing. We applied the project to the subject despite their attempted resistance. It seemed to be working as planned. At least for a moment it had. The subject started to have muscle spasms despite the numbing and paralysis agents. Their heartbeat started spiking and increasing in speed. We thought it might have been a seizure but someone noted something was wrong with the eyes. We could only watch in shock as the eyes went from a vivid Azure Blue shade to a dull greyish blue. The eyes also stopped reacting to the light correctly during this and the subject fainted soon after. Further testing needed for answers.'
Peter's eyes widened as he read through it.
Aurora swallowed harshly, her mouth going dry as she read. It was horrific to think Kasey had gone through all of this. To think that her friend had suffered through all of that.
Peter glanced at her. "Do... Do we open the other one?" He typed out. "I... I don't know if I want too..."
Aurora bit her lip, staring at the other file. She had to know, but she didn't know if she'd be able to handle what she read. "I've gotta know-"
Peter hesitated before sighing and nodding as he clicked onto it.
'Test two, Subject 25. We have confirmed the Subject has gone completely blind. They are much more compliant now but still try to resist some. We have decided to try to repair their sight but if we are unable to, we will remove them and replace them with artificial ones. I am writing the notes as they are working on them right now. Seems they've found them unrepairable and are prepping for the switch inahfjkdsa;-'
Peter felt sick as he leaned away from the computer. He very vaguely recalled her mentioning something like this when they first met but to see it was actually true and not just what she thought was going on was sickening.
Aurora covered her mouth, stepping one step back from the computer. She had never imagined for it to be that bad. It was bad enough that they blinded her, but then they had to go and try to replace her eyes! And for what? To make her some sort of soldier or something?
"There's... There's still more- Aura..." Peter looked really hesitant. "We're too far in to stop, aren't we?"
She nodded hesitantly. She kept her hand over her mouth, causing her voice to come out muffled. "Let's just read through the rest and get it over with."
Peter nodded and scrolled down, bracing himself.
'The subject woke up during the process, they started to panic, thankfully the paralysis was still in effect so they had time to try to get ahold of the situation but in the chaos, they got free. They, despite being restrained to the surgical table as securely as we could, with strong doses of both numbing and paralysis pumped into her system, woke up, panicked, broke free, and fled out a window. Subject- Subject 25 is loose. Reobtaining and damage control protocols have been put in place. They are confident they'll get her back soon.'
Peter felt tears spill down his face as he read, feeling his chest tighten. She had woken up during that? He read the part about her jumping out the window and his eyes widened. "This... This is when we met her." He whispered, his voice faint and he hadn't really processed that he had said anything.
It felt like her breath had caught in her chest, and couldn't help but stare in horror. She remembered that day so clearly, but she never imagined this is what Kasey was running from. Strangely enough she had never pressed on the subject. She guessed she had just found comfort in not knowing. "Is there anymore..?"
"Uh... doesn't look like it." He replied, typing this time. "At least not for Kasey..."
Aurora nodded, tapping the pocket where her phone was. "I've got pictures of the file papers that we can read over at your place. I don't think I can handle any more of that right now." She just had no idea how Kasey had handled all of that firsthand.
He nodded. "Alright." he logged back out of the computer and stood up. "May should be here shortly, let's go wait outside."
"Yeah, let's." Aurora shuddered lightly, sticking close to Peter. It was almost like, in the past 48 hours alone, the tower seemed haunted and empty.
Peter led her downstairs and they stepped outside, only having to wait for a few minutes for May to pull up. Peter smiled when he saw her pull up and gently tugged Aurora along behind him as he came over to the car.
Aurora followed along behind him, recognizing May's car. She tightened her grip on her bag, coming over to the car and opening the door to greet May. "Thanks for picking us up."
May waved a dismissive hand, looking over at the two. "Don't worry about it! I had to run out anyway to-" A sharp gasp sounded from her as she looked them over. "What happened??"
Peter flinched a bit at her tone and gave a sheepish smile as he started to reply but stopped, remembering what Kade had said about not using it. He reluctantly signed that it was a long story and that they could explain at home-
Aurora watched Peter, having not known that he knew sign language. It was a fun new fact to learn about him.
The fact that Peter was using sign language only made May more worried. She moved to mess with her seatbelt, hurriedly talking. "Is this something to do with your internship?" She alluded. "Because I have no problem going up there and giving Tony a what for-"
Peter quickly waved his hands in front of him. "No, no, no! It's- It's okay, May- I-" He hesitated. "Can you just take us home?" He asked her as he signed, tensed up and not meeting her gaze. "Please?"
May paused, her eyes searching over his face before softening. She sighed and leaned back in her seat, motioning for them to get in. "Fine, hop in and we'll go."
Aurora breathed a sigh of relief and took the back seat, sliding in and placing her bag at her feet. She was curious about the pictures on her phone, wanting to pull them out and read them, but she resisted.
Peter took the passenger seat and set his backpack on the floor, leaning back in the chair with a soft sigh. "Thank you. I promise to explain when we get home." He signed.
"I'll be counting on that. Buckle up." She told the two of them, putting the car into drive and starting off. She was worried about the both of them, but would respect Peter's wishes, for now.
Aurora was glad to hear they'd talk about it at Peter's place. As she knew May would've ripped Tony a new one, and she didn't think she could handle that.
