Chapter 71
Meanwhile, about two minutes later after Kasey, Claire, and Foggy left, Atlas spoke up again. "He's almost here."
And sure enough Matt could hear his engine fast approaching.
Matt nodded and stood from the couch. "Until he leaves, why don't you uh, keep it down? Kasey seems pretty keen on not having Tony take you."
It was weird speaking to an AI, but in all honesty, it wasn't the weirdest thing to have happened to him over the past few days. He just wasn't looking forward to confronting Tony. After all, who would?
"Right. I'm going to power off so he won't be able to know I'm with you." He told him before powering down.
Matt heard Tony land on the roof and start heading towards the door.
Matt went over to the roof access stairs, and managed to make his way up them before Tony made it to the door. No way would he just wait for Tony to barge in. The main thing to do would be to focus on keeping Tony out of the apartment, and keeping him outside of the boundaries Matt would set. Maybe that would put a damper on his control issues.
He stood by the door and waited, before reaching forward and opening the door. "Hello Tony."
Tony had been about to reach out to knock or open the door when Matt opened it, catching him off guard. He stepped back in a bit of surprise. Wasn't he supposed to stay off his leg??? And how the hell did he know he was here and wait for him to try to knock??
He quickly refocused and decided to just get straight to the point. "Where's Kasey, Matt?" He asked him, his tone held a slight edge to it. After all, Peter said she had been here and was likely here when he called earlier to ask for Claire.
And he didn't appreciate everyone fighting to keep her away from him. They didn't understand why he had to do this... He had promised not to say.
Matt's expression didn't change. It was stone cold, and he kept his tone the same way. Any hint of change or surprise could lead to more problems.
"Nowhere where you'll be able to get to her." Matt told him straight up. He stepped forward, keeping his crutch in hand. If push came to shove, he could use it in defense.
"You need to stop pursuing her, Tony. You'll only make it harder for her to trust you again."
Tony gave a sigh of frustration. "I don't want to be doing this either but I don't have much of a choice." He replied. "She's dangerous, Matt. I know she doesn't mean to be, but she is." He pressed. "I need to take her back to the tower. Even if it means breaking her trust in me." He frowned at the thought but knew none of them would get it.
He shifted a bit, watching Matt carefully. "So I'll ask again, where is she?"
"That's the thing, Tony. I know what she's capable of. And yet I chose to let her be. She can live under the same roof as me and I don't even mind." Matt told him firmly. He understood that Kasey was dangerous, yeah, he just wouldn't pin that label to her.
"That begs the question: Are you afraid of her?" Matt inquired, listening to Tony's heartbeat.
The question caught Tony off guard. "Am I-?" He started to repeat it before scoffing and chuckling faintly as he thought it over. "Yes." He replied, honestly. "I am scared of her. But, I'm also scared for her." He replied. "You say you know what she's capable of," He crossed his arms with a frown.
"but do you really? Do you know she's capable of tearing a man's side open, effectively condemning him to death with her teeth? Or ripping a man's arm right out of it's socket with ease?" He asked. "Or the fact she can kick a full grown man through a six inch thick wall?"
"Are you aware she's willing to kill someone? Or that she already has?" He watched Matt, having Friday run a scan to see if she could locate Kasey inside at all.
Some of that information was knew to Matt, but he refused to express that through his voice or stature. He stood his ground in the doorway.
"You are going about this the wrong way Stark. Instead of trying to help her control herself, or teach her how to express her anger, you're looking to lock her up." He set his jaw and shifted his weight.
"Don't you think she's had enough of locked rooms?"
"How am I supposed to do any of that if she won't even talk to me?" He pressed back. "Even before all of this! She shut everyone out for a week and then ran off in the dark of night to try to go back to the damn corporation to do who the hell knows what!" He pointed out. "And instead she nearly gets herself killed in an alleyway!"
"I'm not-" He huffed in annoyance. "I don't want to lock her up." He replied. "But I rather be the one to do it then someone like that corporation or if SHIELD finds out what she's done or is capable of or literally anything about her origins? They are not going to let her out." He pointed out.
"The only reason I even tried to contain her was cause she refused to sit down and listen and talk to me. I didn't lock her up the moment I got her there. She woke up and fought against me, in her right mind, and was going to run off or get herself hurt more than she already was!"
"And how many kills do you have under your belt Tony? Don't think I don't know even a portion of your kill count." Matt threatened.
"I said it before and I'll say it again. She doesn't need to be locked up, she needs to be worked with. The only reason why she's acting the way she is, is because she's being cornered. By you and every other stressor in her environment. Once we can break the reaction, then everything can become easier."
Tony tensed at that. That was a low blow he hadn't expected. "You think I don't regret that?!" He snapped. "That's what I'm trying to avoid with her!" He huffed in frustration. "You saw her in one of her episodes! I know she can't help it but what happens when she gets triggered into one and someone, not knowing any better, tries to help and she attacks them? Huh? You haven't seen or listened to the footage of her over the past few days alone!"
He ran his hand through his hair again. "Damn it, Matt! She verbally admitted to Atlas that she was contemplating slaughtering, what? Fourteen or so people!" He stressed. "Tell me Matt, you're a lawyer, right? If someone kills somebody in self defense and can prove it as so, they are excused for the act of committing murder, right?" He asked him, watching him closely.
"Can you really excuse slaughtering fourteen people?" He asked him seriously. "Cause I'm sure as hell if that tape was played she'd be deemed unstable and taken away to a mental hospital which wouldn't even be able to contain her!" He pointed out. "There isn't a place like that for enhanced people! The closest thing we have is either Shield or Rikers!"
"In case you haven't noticed, I haven't seen anything." Matt pointed out snarkily, before continuing. "And yet I still managed to make her feel more at home here than your high horse tower."
He couldn't help but think that the fourteen people were most definitely those that Kasey was up against in the warehouse. He had to admit, Kasey was pretty impressive in her fighting skills, but scary all the same.
Matt noticed the click in Tony's attitude, and he almost regretted setting him off. "Just back off, alright? Give her some time away from you. She needs it right now. This is an important point in her life where she could take one of two roads."
Tony flinched at the sight comment and started to reply to it when Matt kept going. He finally went quiet, Matt could hear his heart racing as he breathed slow and heavy.
"...I know." He replied after a moment. "I know it is." He sighed. He was still tense as he stood there. He didn't look up at him. "But I can't let her just... run loose." He sounded tired. "And none of you will understand why." He put his face in his hands with another sigh. "Because I promised her I wouldn't say."
He shook his head. "And now she's convinced everyone that I want to "lock her away"." He scoffed softly. "I see how she gets that, I do, but she won't listen to why. She won't let me explain my train of thought. She just..." He frowned. "She acts like I'm no better than them." He sounded hurt to admit that.
"And she's been that way for almost two weeks..." He looked up at Matt. "Look, you may think you know her, but you don't."
Matt frowned, taking in this new information. Obviously Tony had some sort of information that was important to Kasey. He wouldn't force Tony to say, knowing that would only further drive the two apart.
"When she's ready, she'll open up further. We just have to be patient and wait. Maybe when she calms down some, I can set up a meeting for you two to talk things over. To give both sides of the story." Matt offered, glad the argument had somewhat settled down.
"She's not going to agree to that. I know she won't." He replied, Friday finally confirming she wasn't here. Tony sighed, frustrated. Either she slipped out before he got there or during Matt keeping him busy. Damn it.
"She doesn't want to talk about it. She doesn't want to acknowledge it and she doesn't want to think about what it means for her." He told him, his tone a bit colder again. "She just wants to pretend like nothing is wrong when that's not the case!"
He finally took a step back from Matt, turning his attention to Friday. "Friday, can you locate Atlas?"
"No sir, he's offline again."
"Get him online." He told her as he glanced back at Matt. "Listen, I may seem like I have no reason to do what I'm doing but I do." He told him. "And I'm sorry you got this involved in the first place."
Atlas booted up, confused and stayed quiet, recognizing he was forcibly booted on but Friday called him out.
"He's here, sir."
Tony frowned at that in confusion before looking back at Matt, his eyes hardening a bit. "Where's Atlas?" He demanded. If Kasey wasn't here and she left Atlas behind-
She really didn't want to be found.
Matt silently cursed. He had hoped that Tony would finally back down. But knowing Tony and his ego, he should've known better. And of course he'd have some sort of control over Atlas.
"I'm glad I got involved in this. If it means that Kasey can come into her own, on her own, then I'm glad for it. She needs someone now more than ever to show her how to control herself. Not just to simply tell her how to act, and what to do."
Matt paused, remembering what Kasey had mentioned earlier. "Not to mention, Kasey is eighteen years old. An adult. She has every right to be where she wants."
"You didn't answer my question." Tony replied back. "And sure, maybe legally that's the case, but she-" He shook his head. "She's different." He replied. "She cannot just go and do her own thing! I wish she could but she can't!" He knew that he wouldn't accept that but he couldn't dive deeper into that without risking breaking his promise.
But boy was he close-
"I can't tell you where Kasey's AI is right now. She entrusted him to me, both to keep him safe and to keep him from being used to track her." Matt plainly put it. He didn't really understand what Tony was saying, but assumed it had something to do with what he wasn't telling him.
"Look, Tony, I'm sorry but I can't help you with what you came for. I won't help you find her. The most I can offer is looking after her and keeping you up to date on things. Then maybe setting up a time for you two to simply talk." A plea deal, almost. Neither of them were moving from their viewpoints, but finding a middle ground might help.
"Atlas is currently located in Mr. Murdock's pant pocket." Friday spoke up.
Atlas didn't respond to being called out. Maybe if he pretended not to be there they'd leave him alone-
Tony scoffed. "Of course." He was angry and frustrated, sure, but he couldn't do anything about the situation. If Matt wasn't going to help him find her then he'll do it the way he found Peter. "Friday, scan Hell's Kitchen for Kasey's biometrics." He released a small drone so Friday could scan from a better view point.
"One moment." Friday replied as the drone lifted higher into the air.
Tony looked back at Matt, eyes a bit colder towards him. He knew he didn't understand but damn it! The fact he was and is actively hiding her from him was pissing him off. One last try he guessed, while Friday scanned around.
"She isn't safe here!" He finally snapped, frustrated with the situation. "You keep acting like you know her but you don't!" He clenched his fists a bit. "You've known her for what? Five days? No. You know nothing about her! Not a single! damn! thing!"
"And you think you know her any better? You think she'd be safe at the tower, that she'd do anything to get away from?" Matt was quick to retort. He knew Tony was stubborn, but this was just embarrassing.
"You couldn't see what was really happening, right in front of your eyes. Now it's too late. I'm trying to help her as best as I can, but I can't do it correctly if I have to chase you off at the same damn time!"
"THAT'S THE POINT, DAMN IT! SHE'S NOT SAFE ANYWHERE! NOT HERE, NOT AT THE TOWER, NOT HERE IN GENERAL! AND YOU'RE RIGHT! I DON'T KNOW HER! NOBODY KNOWS HER!" He yelled at him. He stopped and swore under his breath before biting the bullet.
"Nobody knows who the hell she is... Not me, not Spider-man, not Interweb- Nobody." He pressed. "And I've been living with her for the past five months and I still don't know a damn thing about her!"
Matt flinched when Tony started up yelling again. He had to admit, Tony was right. No one really knew Kasey, but that didn't stop him from wanting to help her.
"I know that Tony!" Matt was getting exhausted from this argument. It's like they were going in circles. "I know that she doesn't open up a lot! I know that I don't know her anymore than anyone else! I'm just trying to help her!"
"She doesn't open up at all!" He replied. "No one knows anything about her! She hasn't talked to anyone about things she used to do, friends, family, pets, likes, dislikes, anything or at best, very little!"
"I-" He ran his hand over his face. "Look," He shifted a bit. "I appreciate you trying to help, I do, but... I can't let you continue to do so." His voice was firm but held an apologetic tone.
"You've gotten too attached and that's partly my fault and I apologize. But, I can't allow that to continue."
If he wasn't at risk of blowing his cover, (and breaking his hand), he'd have wanted to punch Tony right in that pretentious face of his.
"You don't get it, Stark." Matt hissed out, taking another step forwards. "You don't get to make that decision for me, or for her. You have no guardianship over her, and therefore no right to take her and track her as you please."
"I DO WHEN HER VERY EXISTENCE HERE IS A RISK TO HER SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE AROUND HER!" He snapped back.
He growled in frustration. "She, unintentionally, is an avengers level threat." He explained. "Not just because of her abilities or lack of control! She's not supposed to exist here!" He finally hissed out.
Matt was taken aback by that. How could the kid be that dangerous? Sure she bit a couple people, and she was as strong as a spiderling could be, but an avengers level threat? Honestly, he doubted that. Maybe Tony was actually losing it...
"I've already gathered that she technically doesn't exist. She has no papers, no nothing." Matt remarked, not exactly getting what Tony was insinuating. "You need to calm down, and at this point, you need to leave."
Tony glared at him but Friday spoke up.
"I have located Kasey. Would you like me to plan a route?"
"...Yes." He told her as he turned to walk away.
He stopped at the edge of the building and glanced back at Matt. "The kid isn't who you think she is. She is an anomaly and a walking paradox." He told him.
"We don't know enough about how she got here or how it works to know the risks." He explained. "To know if her just being here longer than she should is dangerous, for either her or anyone or anything around her."
Shit. Matt scowled. He couldn't let Tony go after her like that. "She escaped you once, what makes you think she won't do it again? What makes you think her friends won't break her out?"
"You're aiding into a cycle, and I don't think it will end until you end it." Matt tried to sway him, to make him see even a portion of what he was trying to say. "Give me some time with her."
"Considering neither of them are able to move right now, they won't." He replied firmly. "And I can't let her stay here. She's already getting attached and she can't do that."
He sighed. "I'm sorry but letting her stay and get more attached than she already is will just make it harder for everyone when it's time for her to go home..." He hesitated. Especially since she seems to consider this place... You, home... He thought to himself.
He shook his head. "I'm sorry but she won't be coming back here."
"At least now I know why she's been getting so fed up with you." Matt gripped the crutch, very tempted to chuck it at Tony.
"You're more stubborn than a rock, and if I didn't know otherwise I'd say you were as dense as one too." He shook his head, knowing he was in no condition to have a full on throw down with the Iron Man.
"I get that you're worried for her, and want to keep her and the world safe. I get that. It's a lot to keep track of. So why don't you give me even a week? After that, if anything happens, I won't stop you." He pleaded.
Tony stopped and glanced back at him, hesitating as he watched him. "...It's just going to hurt her more. The longer she stays here." He replied. "Do you really think it's worth that? Letting her get attached more than she already is? Only to have her be forced to leave later?"
"I believe it is. Would you rather she missed us, or be glad she was rid of us?" Matt questioned, wondering if Tony was going to give him that time.
Tony was quiet at that. "...A week." He finally replied. "She can stay for a week unless I find a way to send her home before then." He told him. He turned back to get ready to head off, recalling the drone to him. "As for your question?" He sighed. "... It doesn't matter. Either way will hurt her and everyone involved... One way just makes sure she'll actually do what she has to."
He let his suit lift him into the air and glanced at him. "Whatever happens in the next week with her is on you now," He told him. "I just hope I'm not making a mistake agreeing to this." He sighed before fully looking back at him, hovering in the air. "And when the time comes for her to go, you can't say I didn't warn you."
Matt listened to Tony, and breathed a sigh of relief. It worked. He was just glad he managed to talk him out of it and get him to scram. Although he was going to have a lot to explain to Kasey due to the whole 'one week' deal.
"I'll let you know if anything changes on my end, but I'll hold you to your end of the deal." He replied, relaxing the tension from his shoulders. He hadn't even noticed he had instinctively tensed up.
Tony nodded at that. "You shouldn't hear from me or either of the spiderlings for a week. Both of them are recovering and wouldn't be able to come by even if they wanted to disobey that." He replied, letting the helmet slide back shut. "I'll talk to you again in a week." And with that he left, heading back towards the tower.
Matt waited until he heard Tony get far enough away to turn back towards his apartment. He closed the door behind him, leaning heavily on the crutch until he could get back down the stairs and onto the couch. His leg ached from all of the movement he had been doing.
He pulled his phone out, shooting a quick message to Foggy and Claire, letting them know he had handled the situation, and it was safe to head back.
