Chapter 70
A light knock came from the medbay’s door.
"May I come in?" A young woman's voice asked and Peter saw her standing with her back to the door, facing away from them. "Stark mentioned you two prefer to keep your identities hidden so I wanted to make sure you were ready," She explained.
Peter blinked in surprise and grabbed his mask from the table and reached out and snagged Aurora's, gently tossing it to her so she wouldn't have to move too much.
Aurora had barely noticed that she hadn’t had her mask on this whole time. She took the mask from where it was thrown and slipped it over her head. It took a bit of uncomfortable effort, but she managed. She left it lifted halfway up her face, so it wouldn’t press on the cut on her cheek.
“Thank you for waiting, doctor.”
"Of course, I didn't want to just walk in on the two of you." She replied, turning once Friday confirmed she could and stepped inside. She saw the two of them and winced. "Geez, he wasn't kidding when he said it was bad..." She approached them and stood in front of them. "I guess first things first, who wants to go first?" She asked.
Peter looked at Aurora and gave her a nod to tell her to go first.
Aurora hesitated, but turned back towards the doctor. “Um, I guess that’ll be me.” She raised her hand up a bit. She wasn’t exactly sure what she was expecting from the doctor, seeing as she hadn’t heard of them before.
"Alright. Well, first off, my name is Kade Lee." She introduced herself as she took a seat by Aurora. "Can you tell me anything about the blades here?" She asked.
“Well, the guy who used them said that they have serrated edges, which is why I haven’t attempted pulling them out.” Yet. Her mind whispered.
"Hmm. I might have to widen the incision points to get them out without causing too much more damage. As for this one however..." she looked over the one in her chest.
"This one is in a really dangerous location..."
Aurora looked down at the blade. “Is it that bad?” She asked, remembering how far back the blade went when she was stuck to the wall. “They somehow magnetized me to the wall, and when that happened, I think I felt a pinch on my back..”
She looked a bit alarmed by that. "Can you very carefully lean forward for me to take a look?" She asked her.
Peter also looked alarmed by that information and watched anxiously.
“Oh, um, sure.” She had sat up so abruptly when arguing with Tony, she had almost forgotten about the blade. This time, she leaned forward slowly, as she was instructed.
She carefully took a look and frowned, seeing lacerations where the tips had slightly poked out, either side of her spinal cord. It still seemed to be brushing against it but not like it had been due to the magnets. "It looks like it pierced through your back a bit here. You're incredibly lucky it seems to have prongs for the tips. It went around your spinal cord instead of through it."
Peter paled at the thought. It was worse than he had thought...
Aurora winced at the thought. If that had gone through her spinal cord… She couldn’t bear the thought of what could’ve happened. “I guess with all the bad luck I’ve been having recently, there was at least a little bit of good luck left.” She shrugged lightly, but grimaced from the movement.
"It seems so. I should be able to remove the ones in your shoulders with little to no problems but this one is going to be a lot trickier." She explained. "Friday, have you run scans on them both already?"
"I have. Would you like me to read them off to you?"
"If you don't mind." Kade replied.
"Interweb has multiple severe lacerations, three knives are embedded into her. One in each shoulder and one deep in her chest, just under her sternum and has punctured her liver. It is currently lodged around her spinal cord. She has gashes across the back of both her legs, one down her left arm, and a stab wound in her right thigh. Two bullet wounds as well." She repeated the information from earlier.
"Spider-man has a blade in his left thigh and a broken one in his right knee area. His throat was slit, severely damaging his vocal cords."
Peter flinched at the descriptions. Yeah. That was worse than he expected...
“Fantastic.” Aurora muttered. Not only did she have to deal with the blades being stabbed into her, now she had to deal with the mess of them being taken out. She half wondered if she’d be put under for that, but she didn’t necessarily like the idea of that.
“You said something about widening the incision to get them out?” Aurora asked. It wasn’t that she wasn’t freaking out, she just tried to put off the thoughts for as long as possible.
"Right. If I widen the cuts here," She pointed to where the blades went into her shoulders. "They shouldn't catch on to anything too much and come out cleanly."
She shivered at the thought, feeling like she had been cut enough for the time being. However, she would be glad to get it over with so the inhibitor could be taken off. “When can we get started?”
"Well, now if you want or I can put you under first? It's up to you but I recommend going under cause it's going to hurt."
Aurora wasn’t fond of the idea, as she really didn’t like not knowing what was going on around her. However, if it kept her from feeling anymore blades, she could deal. “I think I’d like to be put under, if that’s okay. Especially with this bugger.” She motioned to the chest blade.
"Alright. I'll get that set up then." She told her and set to work and it wasn't long before she was set. "Okay, you ready? It'll feel like it was just in and out for you probably." She explained.
Aurora sat, contemplating if she even was ready. She laid back onto the bed, slowly and carefully now that she knew the blade was around her spine. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
"Alright." She started the anesthesia up. "We'll give that a minute to pull you under and we'll get started."
She could feel the anesthesia start to take over, and was surprised at how quick it worked. Then again, that might’ve been due to her abilities being shut off. It wasn’t long before it took over, and she fell under.
And seemingly just as quickly, she felt herself start waking up.
"Hey," Kade greeted her. "You with us?"
Aurora blinked a few times, coming back around. It was strange, it really did seem like just a few seconds. “Are they all out?” She asked groggily.
"Yes. All of them are out." She confirmed. "You're incredibly high on pain meds at the moment so you may feel out of it." She warned her. "Try not to move too much, I've removed the cuff around your ankle to help you heal faster but you need to stay in bed."
She groaned lightly, lifting her good arm to feel over the spot where the blade had been. The doctor was right, she felt incredibly loopy and light headed. It was relieving, however, to find that the pain was mostly gone.
"Spider-man is resting as well." She told her, glancing over to where Peter was fast asleep. "His was a bit easier than yours." She chuckled softly.
Aurora glanced over at Peter, breathing a sigh of relief. She really had to hold back from crying then and there, blaming it on the pain meds. She was just so happy to know he was fixed up now.
“I was really scared for him, when that guy took a knife to his throat.” She didn’t want to outright say it, but she was terrified of losing him. It felt like their trio was cracking.
"I don't blame you." She replied. "I'm not entirely sure how much his healing factor will be able to repair it, honestly. There was little I could do to really help at all with that." She explained.
“I hope it mostly goes back to normal.” She didn’t know if she could live with herself knowing that he was permanently hurt from that fight.
“I know you said I shouldn’t move much right now, but have any idea when I can start to?” She couldn’t handle Tony right now.
She sighed. "I wouldn't recommend any major movements anytime soon. I don't know enough about your healing factors to say for certain when you could."
Aurora groaned, staring up at the ceiling again. She could’ve sworn that it swirled in the corners of her vision. Maybe it wasn’t the brightest idea to try and take off just yet. “That makes sense. Thank you, by the way.”
"Of course. I'm just glad I could help and that you're both enhanced with healing factors." she chuckled softly. "I'm... It would have been a very different outcome if it wasn't for that."
Aurora frowned, knowing the doctor was right. If it were anyone normal in their position… She didn’t like to think about what would happen. “Yeah, I’m sure it would’ve been..”
She nodded and glanced over at Peter who was still sound asleep. "I'll probably hang around for a while longer just to make sure you are both good to go."
She found herself once again running her hands over the spots where the blades had been. After a moment of thought, she pushed herself up slowly. “Did you keep the blades?”
She wanted to know how they worked, and keeping them would help with that.
"Oh, uh, yeah. Here." She handed her one of them. "I already cleaned them up-"
Aurora took the blade, trying to focus on it. It was still sharp, but it was also strange. She’d have to run some tests on them later, once she was feeling better. And preferably when Tony wasn’t in the lab.
"I figured you guys would want to test them and figure out what they're made of so I kept them."
“Thanks, I totally forgot to ask you beforehand.” Aurora turned it over in her hand, frowning. She didn’t know if it was just the meds throwing her off, but she felt true hatred for the man with the blades.
"If... if you don't mind me asking, what happened?"
“A series of unfortunate events, that’s for sure.” She set the blade down gently and turned towards the doctor. “I landed in the wrong alleyway at the wrong time, and got jumped by a group of the guys that have been bugging us lately. One of them got an advantage on me and it escalated from there. Spiderman over there came to help but… you can see how that turned out.”
"Yeah... I've never seen anything like these before... Tony said he hadn't either while I patched up his arm just before he left-" She explained.
“Patched up his arm-?” She looked over at the doctor, confused. “He didn’t even mention anything to us-“ Then again, they really were too busy arguing to listen…
"Yeah, apparently it cut straight through his armor," She replied. "Like, clean through-"
“Clean through?? The iron armor??” She was in pure disbelief, suddenly wondering who they were really up against back there. If he was skilled enough to cut that blade straight through Tony’s armor… He was either really smart, really strong, or both.
"Yeah- He said it even pierced into the concrete pillar he had sheltered behind." She added. "Whoever you guys are against, are clearly incredibly dangerous..."
“Yeah, I’m beginning to think we got off luckier than I originally thought.” She motioned to her injuries. “And that’s saying quite a bit.”
"It really is... I hate to even say this but... It could've been a lot worse..."
“Yeah… I know.” Aurora spoke softly. Her mind couldn’t help but wander, going over what could’ve happened if it had been worse. After all, he had threatened to drag her out of their dead or alive.
Kade was about to reply again when Peter started to shift. "Ah, it seems he's finally coming around." She noticed and moved over to him. "Hey, take it easy, alright? You're gonna be a bit out of it for a couple minutes."
Peter blinked awake and looked a bit confused once his eyes focused and started to try to say something but Kade gently pressed her fingers over his lips.
"Don't you'll agitate your vocal cords if you try." She warned him.
Aurora turned, watching him carefully. Knowing Peter, him not being able to talk would agitate him too. “Just relax, you can talk and quip all you want when you’re healed up.”
He glanced over at her when Kade moved out of the way and stuck his tongue out at her comment. Kade handed his phone back to him and he started typing again. "Bold of you to assume I can't still do so." The voice spoke as he grinned at her.
She stuck her tongue back out at him in retaliation. “Oh, how could I have forgotten your text to speech.” She laughed lightly, following after with a soft wince. She was just happy she still had some pain meds in her.
"Thank you for the help." He told Kade who laughed.
"Of course, just get some rest, both of you, alright?"
"Yes, Ma'am!" Peter typed back.
“Aw man, but I just woke up from a lot of rest.” Aurora pouted, leaning against the backboard. She couldn’t help but wonder if Tony would come back with Kasey or not, and wanted to stay awake to see.
"I'm not saying sleep, but there's not a lot else for you to do that would count as resting." She pointed out.
“I suppose you’re right there.” She figured she could mess around on her phone until she was up to moving around. “I just want to be awake when Tony gets back.”
"Mr. Stark has entered the tower." Friday's voice spoke up, as if one cue.
"Well, seems you didn't have to wait too long." Kade commented.
Peter was tense and sat up, watching the medbay doors, hoping that Kasey wasn't with him.
Aurora watched and waited, sitting up rigidly. She felt tense, and felt her heart begin to race. It sounded fairly quiet, so he either didn’t find her… or she wasn’t resisting. For now she would wait to see.
