Chapter 69
Claire sighed as she finished cleaning Kasey's hair for her and let her lay down after wrapping her head and chest properly.
Kasey had been just staring at nothing, her face was void of expression but she looked exhausted. She had moved to lay down but tensed in surprise when she heard the faint noise of her movin against the sheets and ran her hand across it, listening as the noise slowly filtered back in.
She slowly heard the noises of the apartment come back to her and hesitated. "H-hello?" She tried, her voice quiet and uncertain but she heard it.
Claire looked at her as she sat back up. "Kasey?"
Kasey turned towards her. "C-Claire?" She asked in return.
Claire sighed in relief. "Y-yeah. You're at Matt's. He and Foggy are here too." She explained.
Matt knew a storm was brewing on the horizon, and that Tony would bring thunder in his footsteps. He didn't want Claire and Foggy to be there when Tony came, fearing they would car he some of the heat of keeping Kasey hidden.
He was about to bring this up to them both, when he heard Kasey speak. He sat up sharply, tuning in to her. He spoke softly, unsure of how much hearing she had gotten back at once.
"Yeah, we're here Kasey. Are you feeling alright?" He wondered if her concussion was healing already.
Kasey tilted her head carefully as she turned to Matt. "E-everything's still fuzzy and muffled and my entire body hurts but I can hear more than I could a bit ago," she shrugged a bit.
Foggy gave a faint chuckle. "Falling off a roof will do that." He pointed out.
Claire chuckled. "Matt can absolutely confirm that." She smirked.
"You fall off a few roofs every now and then." Matt replied with a shrug.
"It's good to know your hearing is coming back. Probably means it was just from overstimulation and not worsened by the concussion." Matt thought aloud, before realizing he'd have to tell her.
"Atlas said something about being tracked."
"Yeah, well my senses don't usually allow for that but they were kinda out of commission-" She stopped when Matt mentioned Atlas being tracked and he heard her heart skip a beat. "Atlas?"
"I'm sorry," He apologized. "He overrode my systems... He know we're here."
She took a shuddering breath at that. She was in no state to leave the building again but she didn't want Tony to come here and be mad at Matt, Claire, and Foggy because of her...
"We'll take care of it," Claire reassured her. "We aren't going to let him take you."
Kasey turned to her, tears spilling down her face. "What if you can't talk him out of it?"
Claire hesitated and glanced at Matt.
Matt knew she wouldn't take it well, but he also knew she deserved to know before Tony actually showed up. He did, however, find it strange that he hadn't left the tower yet.
"I'll keep him from you, at all costs." Matt assured her. "I'll keep him from coming in, and I'll keep him from taking you."
He hoped he could talk Tony out of it. If not, then he'd have to try other measures. He turned to Foggy and Claire. "I don't know if I want you two here when Stark comes."
"We want to help." Claire replied, crossing her arms.
Foggy nodded before turning to Kasey. "Kasey, how old are you?"
She looked confused but answered, "Eighteen. Why?"
"You're old enough to legally be on your own." He pointed out. "Is Tony legally your guardian or have you signed anything agreeing to stay there?"
She shook her head. "No. He just offered to let me stay since I didn't have anywhere else to go..."
"Then legally, he can't take you." Foggy pointed out.
Kasey blinked at that. "Wait, really?"
Hearing that she was legally an adult, Matt sat up straighter. This whole time he had been thinking she was a kid, and that was why Tony kept coming after her. Tony acted like a father to the kids, so Matt had assumed he was somewhat of a guardian to them.
"Foggy actually has a point. It would have been harder if you were underage, and he was technically your guardian." Matt explained.
"Since you're an adult, there's nothing legally binding you to Tony, or to the tower. You have full legal control of yourself and where you choose to stay. If he forcibly takes you from here, it would be kidnapping."
Kasey processed that for a moment. "Even with the footage he saw from Atlas?" She asked Matt.
Foggy frowned. "I don't know what you're talking about exactly but as far as I'm aware he doesn't have the authority to arrest you if that's what you're worried about."
Kasey took a shaky breath, rubbing at the tears spilling down her face. "R-Really?" She had thought all this time that he could just... tell her what to do and she had no other options... And she supposed that was true up until she met Matt.
"He can't- I'm able to leave?" She asked, her voice soft. "E-Even though I don't-" She stopped, tensing up at the thought.
"Yes, you're able to leave and go wherever you want. You're an adult, Kasey. He can't keep you under his thumb anymore." Matt told her. He was honestly surprised that she hadn't figured it out earlier, but when living like that, he supposed it was hard to break out of it.
"Hell, you don't even have to stay here if you don't want to. I really wouldn't recommend that right now though." As much as Matt would enjoy having her flourishing on her own, he wanted to keep her here and safe for the time being. That, and he wanted to train her to control her self defense urges.
He just wondered why Tony was taking so long. That was truly unlike him.
Tears just spilt down her face. "Even though I don't exist?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"We're working on that," Foggy reassured her which she didn't reply to, knowing that Matt understood what she had really meant.
"I just... I didn't have anywhere else to turn to..." She explained to Foggy and Claire. "Any family I had aren't... here."
Both of their eyes widened at that, confusion flickering across their faces but Claire gently squeezed her shoulders.
"Well, now you have some new places to turn to." She reassured her with a soft smile.
Matt frowned, turning his head in Kasey's direction. Pity was drawn on his face, and he felt terrible that she had to deal with all of this.
"Yeah, even if you don't have papers yet. Like Foggy said, we're still working on that. It shouldn't be too long now." It wasn't exactly a lie, they were working on getting closer to figuring it out, but he didn't know exactly how soon it would be ready.
Kasey chuckled faintly. "Thank you..." She told them.
"Of course. We're not gonna let you go through this alone." Foggy reassured her.
Claire nodded in agreement when Atlas spoke up again.
"He just left the tower and seems to be headed this way." He told them.
Kasey tensed up, gripping at the blankets.
Claire bit her lip, looking at Matt. "Foggy or I could take her with us? Just so she's not here either? Leave Atlas here as bait?" She offered which made Kasey turn to her in surprise.
Leave Matt here, alone, to deal with a pissed off Tony?? Hell no. "What- No! I don't know what Tony's going to do or say or whatever but I don't like the idea of Matt dealing with it alone!" She argued. "Not when Tony's this angry-"
Matt was set on edge again. Even though he knew Tony was going to be coming, he still didn't like to hear it.
"That's not a bad idea, Kasey. I appreciate your concern, but if you're away from here and Atlas, he can't track you." Matt pointed out.
She wanted to argue but knew he was right and glanced away. "...He's just gonna keep looking..." she mumbled. "I don't wanna keep running..."
Claire's eyes softened. "It's just for now. We just want to keep you safe."
Kasey frowned a bit. "..." That's what Tony had originally wanted, right? To keep her safe?
She was sure he didn't want to hurt her but... keeping her on a leash or in a jar wasn't keeping her safe. It was driving her mad.
"I promise it's only until Tony leaves." Matt told her, picking up on her silence.
"After that, you can either come back here, or go where you'd like. I'm just asking that you go with Claire and Foggy for now, so Tony can't get you here." He explained. Whatever was going to happen, he didn't want Kasey to hear it.
She reluctantly sighed and nodded. "Okay..." She very hesitantly pulled her bracelet off her wrist and held it out towards Matt. "Please don't let him take Atlas away... He's the only way I'm able to navigate the city without getting lost..."
Matt grabbed his crutch and stood, taking the bracelet from Kasey. He tucked it into his sweats pocket, out of sight. That way, if Tony barged into the apartment, he wouldn't find it.
"Now you all should go. I don't know how long until he gets here. I'll let Claire of Foggy know when it's safe to come back." He'd be able to tell if Tony was still casing the area afterwards.
Kasey stood up, her backpack slung around her shoulders as Claire stood next to her to make sure she was alright.
She carefully stepped forward and when she was sure she wasn't going to fall, she moved over to Matt and hugged him. "Please be careful... I don't know what he might do to try to find me..." she told him.
She hated the idea of running away and letting Matt deal with it but it was that or risk being locked away for who knew how long...
Claire and Foggy exchanged glances, unsure of how this was going to play out.
Matt wrapped his arms around her, being careful not to hug her too tight. After all, she fell off a roof less than an hour ago.
"You guys be careful too. Lay low somewhere he wouldn't think to look." He wanted to make sure they were alright as well. He really hated sending Kasey out again, after just having got her back from her fall. But if it protected her in the long run, he knew he'd have to put up with it.
She nodded carefully and Claire put her hand on her shoulder as she let go of Matt.
"Call us when you deem it safe to come back." Claire told him before leading Kasey out of the apartment.
Foggy looked at him. "Please try not to fist fight him if possible." Foggy told him with a wiry laugh. He bid him goodbye for now and headed out with Claire and Kasey.
Matt heard Claire and Kasey go, and turned to Foggy. "I'll try not to, especially if he comes in that tin suit of his." He told Foggy, a light smirk on his face.
"Just keep an eye on them. Kasey has a tendency to run off in tense situations. Mostly out of good intentions, but still." He warned him, before listening for them to leave the building.
He heard the three leave the building and get into Claire's car, Foggy opting to leave his there for now, and head off.
Kasey was curled up in the back seat, staying quiet as they drove.
After a bit of searching and trying to remember where he put them, Matt found his glasses and slipped them on. Tony cared for Kasey, but lately he had been annoying Matt.
He took a seat on his couch, leaning forward to rest against his crutch. Here he would wait.
