Chapter 66
The beeping of the heart monitors was steady, and something to focus on. Aurora listened to Peter's, sometimes holding her breath if she thought it faltered. That was really only her imagination though.
It was something that told her he was alive, and they hadn't faced the worst at the hands of the corporation.
The monitor started to beep a little faster as Peter started to wake up. He slowly blinked his eyes open, wincing at the lights for a minute before settling back down.
He started to try to make a small noise as he woke but started coughing from the pain it caused instead. He had stopped coughing up as much blood but there was still a bit every now and then, depending on how bad he coughed.
Aurora felt herself grow happy that he was awake, but that awful sound took her straight back to the alleyway. "Try not to talk, Peter. Your throat has to be hurt pretty bad, and trying to talk might hurt it more."
Peter startled a bit when he heard her and sat up to look turn towards her a bit better without moving his neck. He almost tried to reply only to stop because she just told him not to. Not like he could it seemed...
He just nodded carefully. He hated this. He couldn't communicate at all- Wait! He looked over to the desk by his bed and grabbed his phone and started typing.
"I'm glad to see you awake." A voice said from his phone. "I was really worried."
Aurora laughed lightly but winced afterwards, regretting the action. "Of course you'd find a way."
She reached up with her good arm, running her hand over the cut on her other arm. "Can't say I don't wonder if it'd be better if I wasn't." She told him.
"I'm sorry I got you into that situation..." Aurora bit the inside of her cheek, remembering that look on his face when it happened.
Peter frowned a bit at that and typed again. "No, I should've processed the situation better. I was just frenzied cause-" she heard him delete something and retype.
"Cause it wasn't looking good and I just... jumped into it." The voice told her. "I shouldn't have said anything and just tried to trigger one of the protocols Karen has..."
"Peter..." She sighed, and forced herself to turn and look at him. He still didn't look too great, but it was relieving to see him there, alive.
"If you hadn't come for me, you'd be talking right now."
Peter flinched at that and looked away, his hand trailing to his throat but barely touched the bandages wrapped around it. "Not your fault." It said.
"We shouldn't have split up. We could've gotten out of there if we were both there before things got out of hand..." He looked back at her. "If you want to blame someone then we're both to blame along with those assholes."
"You don't get it. I had plenty of time to get out of there before that knife guy got the jump on me. I got cocky and I guess luck wasn't on my side." She could've left and called Tony even, telling him the whereabouts of the thugs. But no. She had to stick around and play the cocky, confident hero.
Peter tilted his head just a bit as he listened to her. "But you wanted to stop them, right? They were working for that company and were after Kasey. It just... got out of hand, I guess."
She let out a soft sigh. "I suppose you're right." She had wanted to stop them, that much was true. But she really didn't know why anymore. Was it revenge for herself? Revenge for Kasey and Peter? Or was it just an outlet for her to express her anger?
Peter shifted a little bit. "It doesn't help that we don't know much about what they're capable of..."
"I know they've been working to contain enhanced persons. Think of the cuffs, and... these." She lifted her leg with a bit of effort, showing the suppressor.
Peter looked at it and then down at the one on his ankle and frowned. "Did Tony tell you why he didn't remove them?"
"Stops our healing factor until the blades are removed. It would make it worse if we healed around them." She explained, that small urge flaring up in the back of her mind again. There shouldn't be blades sticking out of her.
Peter nodded a bit. "That makes sense... Is there a reason he hasn't done that yet?"
"Something along the lines of not being capable." She responded, looking back up at the ceiling. "If it were up to me I'd take them out myself."
"I wouldn't recommend it. They look pretty deep... you could make it worse." He pointed out.
"I know. I just-" She shifted uncomfortably. "Every time I move, every time I breathe, I can feel them moving."
Peter flinched. "I'm sorry, I'm sure Tony's trying to figure something out as fast as he can."
"I know he is. Last I heard he went off to ask Claire if she was available. I haven't heard from him since though." She didn't like being stuck in bed, or the feeling that she wasn't healing like normal. Honestly, everything just sucked.
"Oh... I'm not sure she is..." He replied, hesitantly.
Aurora furrowed her brows, glancing over at him again. "What do you mean?"
Peter hesitated. "I mean, Matt was pretty injured when we were there, right? She probably has her hands full with him..."
Aurora didn't really buy that, and it hurt to think he was hiding something. But she wouldn't push him. Now would not be the time for that. "I guess..."
Peter felt bad about being unable to tell her but he couldn't risk Friday telling Tony about Kasey. Not when he promised her he wouldn't help him bring her back...
An awkward silence followed after, the beeping from the monitors being the only sound. It was a good few minutes before she spoke again. "Was Tony the one that got us out of there?"
"Yeah. He beat them up pretty good from the glimpse I got." He typed. "He and Happy brought us home."
"I can only imagine." It was amusing to think they all got their butts handed to them. She couldn't help but think of Tony apologizing as soon as she woke up, as if any of that was his fault. She was tired of hearing people apologize for her stupid mistakes.
He hesitated, trying to think of how to tell her about Kasey being safe with Matt without alerting Karen about it. He would've just come over and shown her but- He looked at his legs where the knives were still dug in. He sighed, running a hand through his hair.

It didn't take Claire too long to find Kasey, as she was nearby like Matt had said but when Claire got to her, her eyes widened at the sight of the damage from the fall.
Her hair was stained in the pool of blood under her head and her arms were scraped up from the fall.
"Shit." She pulled her phone out, dialing Matt and putting him on speaker as she worked on trying to figure out how to tend to her without moving her too much.
Matt had his head in his hands, and was sitting on the couch as he waited for Claire. His phone began to ring from its spot on the floor, and bent over, patting the floor until he found it.
He picked it up and answered. "Did you find her? Is she okay?"
"I did find her but... It's not good, Matt. She's completely out. It looks like she hit her head, her hair is in a pool of blood and if she was on the roof then she fell pretty far..." She explained, gently brushing her bangs out of her face.
"I'm not sure I can move her, Matt. You're not supposed to move people if they hit their head..." She explained. "But I can't call for backup cause she's enhanced..."
Matt cursed again, knowing that wasn't good. Many times before he'd had his own head injuries, but nothing he couldn't handle on his own, or with Claire's help.
"I can call Foggy, would that help? Just... Just tell me what to do."
Claire had moved to sit by Kasey's head and checked for some other symptoms of injuries. She hated how lost Matt sounded and sighed.
"Yeah, call Foggy. I'll need an extra set of hands." She told him.
Since Kasey's head was rolled to the side a bit already, it gave her some access to the bleeding and checked for anything that shouldn't be there before applying pressure with some gauze.
She hesitated but she had to try. "Kasey, can you hear me? I need you to wake up."
No response. She sighed again as she checked to make sure it was safe to realign her head with her spine and carefully and slowly did so and held it there.
"I wish we could just call Tony, he'd have everything I'd need to take care of her but... I can't risk letting him lock her up either..."
"I don't know if Kasey would want that either. She doesn't need to be locked up in any more rooms." Matt told Claire. "I'm going to hang up now and call Foggy, I'll call right back after."
He hung up the call and dialed up Foggy, pressing his phone back against his ear. He waited nervously, just hoping that Foggy was able to help.
