Chapter 60

About three hours later, Kasey started to stir again. She shifted around a bit, making a small hum as she came to.

She carefully sat up, a bit confused on where she was but considering her senses were silent, she quickly assumed she was at Matt's still.

Thank goodness...

She pulled the blanket around her shoulders as she carefully stood up, briefly spooked by her own hair touching her back, before cautiously poking her head into the living room.

Matt was still passed out on the couch, soaking up as much rest as he could for the time being.

A soft knocking sounded from the roof entryway, where Peter was waiting patiently outside. He had Kasey's backpack in one hand, and figured he might as well keep it here until they could find Kasey.

Claire looked up and smiled at Kasey. "Hey, you sleep well?" She asked.

Kasey nodded and started to reply when Peter knocked. Her head tilted, listening to the noise before hearing the distinct sound of either Peter or Aurora's heartbeat. She tensed up and Claire noticed.

"Do... Do you want to hide out in there and I'll see who it is?" She offered quietly.

Kasey nodded. "I-...as long as Tony isn't there, it's... it's okay." She told Claire hesitantly.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded. "I... I want to see-" She stopped, realizing her wording and glanced away, her grip tightening on her blanket. "I want to talk to them..."

Claire nodded. "Okay. Go hide out."

Kasey nodded and disappeared back into the room, closing the door quietly.

Claire walked up the stairs and opened the door, a bit cautiously at first but relaxed when she saw Peter. "Oh, hey. Have you guys found her yet?" She asked him, knowing they haven't but she wasn't sure she wanted to just say she was there.

Peter wasn't surprised to see Claire answer the door. He shook his head softly, fumbling with the bag in his hands. "No, not yet. As far as I know Tony and Interweb haven't found her either."

He held up the backpack, having remembered why he came back. "I wanted to drop this off here. That way if we find her we can come back for it, or if she comes here then it's here for her." He explained tiredly.

Claire looked a little surprised at that. She saw how tired his posture was and heard it in his voice. She hesitated before opening the door a little wider and tilting her head in a motion that invited him inside. "You need to be quiet, Matt's asleep, finally." She chuckled softly. "But... someone would like to talk to you." She admitted quietly.

Peter furrowed his brows in confusion, but stepped inside anyway. He tried to keep his footsteps as quiet as possible, as to not wake his host. "Do you mean-" He paused. "She's here?"

Claire gave a small hesitant nod. "In there," She tilted her head towards the bedroom. "She's waiting for you."

"Oh, thank you Claire." Peter whispered, before slipping off towards the bedroom. He wanted to talk to her, to see how she was doing. He stepped into the bedroom and smiled when he saw her. "I, uh, I brought your bag." Perfect way to start off a conversation. 10/10.

Kasey looked up from her place on the bed when he entered and smiled a little bit at his choice of a greeting but looked confused once she processed it. "You... brought my backpack?" She asked him, her voice soft and quiet so she wouldn't bother Matt.

Peter nodded, stepping a bit closer and holding it out for her. He spoke in soft tones. "I thought I'd leave it here so it'd be safe if we found you, or in case you came back here." He laughed lightly. "Guess I was half right."

Kasey accepted it from him and held it close. "Thank you..." she told him, gratefully. Her suit was tucked inside along with the vials and file she had stolen. "Um, here," She handed the latter two to him. "You can take these back to the tower."

"No problem, really." Peter held the vials and file, glancing over them. He knew this would add to Tony's collection of wild crap they had gotten from the corporation. "I'll make sure to bring them back."

He set them on the bedside table for now, and stepped back, sitting criss crossed on the floor. "Kasey? Um... are you okay? After all that happened with Tony?"

Kasey tensed a bit and glanced away, hesitating before shaking her head. "I'm scared." She admitted. "And he's scared of me." She felt her throat tighten. "I... I didn't mean for things to get so... so out of control... really, I didn't-" She told him, tears starting to spill down her face.

"It's just-" She thought back to what Claire and Matt had said. "It's instinct."

Peter listened to her, his heart aching for her. She sounded scared. "I believe you. I don't think anything you did was on purpose, and describing it as an instinct makes a lot of sense." Peter spoke, not wanting to put her down at all.

"Tony just doesn't know how to help. I don't think he's ever been great at helping with stuff like this." He said with a frown.

Kasey visibly relaxed when he said he believed her, more tears streaming down her face. She wiped at them, setting the bag to the side. "Y-Yeah... I- I can't help it- It just- happens..." She shook her head with a weak laugh. "And apparently he thinks locking me up will help somehow?" She tightened her grip on the blanket around her shoulders. "All that does is trigger my fight or flight instincts even more."

"I can't say I agree with him about locking you up. That's not going to help anything." Peter looked up at her, pity behind his eyes. "But you do need help. Someone you can talk your thoughts out with."

She nodded in agreement. "But how am I supposed to talk to anyone if I can't tell people about my powers, about what really happened?" she asked him. "There's just... so much." She sighed. "What then?"

Peter hummed in thought. That was true, she couldn't exactly talk to just anyone about all of this. "Maybe those SHIELD guys have someone for stuff like this."

"I don't think Tony wants Shield involved, otherwise, wouldn't he have done that already?" She asked.

"I- I don't know.." Peter sighed out. He knew that Tony still cared for Kasey, and he wouldn't knowingly harm her, but he could be pretty emotionally dense. "Maybe he thought they'd try to confiscate you or something, instead of helping."

She chuckled darkly. "Seems to me like that's all anyone wants to do to me right now..." she muttered.

Peter glanced up at her. "I don't think Matt does. He genuinely seems like a nice guy, who just wants to help. Maybe spending some time away from all the hero stuff would help you heal." Only if he knew.

Kasey smiled when he mentioned Matt and nodded. "He is... He's... he's already helped a lot... I just feel bad for making him have to put up with me..." she replied. "He got hurt because of me..."

Peter glanced back at the living area, but was only able to see a little bit of Matt from where he was sitting. "That just proves how much of a good guy he is. Even if he's hurt, he still chose to help you."

Kasey chuckled softly. "Yeah... I'm just... not used to that, I guess." She replied. "He talked me out of another panic attack... yesterday??? Something like that. Before you guys got here." She explained.

"I-...It was a really... really bad one..." She glanced away from him. "I-... I bit him-" She dropped her voice down low, practically whispering.

Peter frowned, hearing that she had a panic attack was saddening. But the fact that Kasey bit him, and he still stuck around? That was willpower. "You bit him? Wow..."

Peter shook his head lightly. "I think he probably already is trying to help you. If he calmed you down, then he must know something about helping you when you're feeling low."

She gave a small nod, hesitating. "I... I told him what happened to me..." She admitted, quietly.

"Like, everything?" Peter questioned, thinking it over. It was a dangerous thing to do, tell someone that stuff, but then again he was also trusted with Daredevil's identity. So he had to be trustworthy, right?

Kasey nodded again. "Y-Yeah... I- I trust him." She told him. "...Peter," Her voice was nearly silent, only having spoken after making sure Matt was still asleep. "Here, with him, I-" She tried to figure out how to explain it. "my senses are silent, Peter." She looked towards him.

"They've never been silent like this before... Even at the Tower..." She admitted. "They're quieter, much quieter around you and Aurora and, well, they were around Tony..." she shook her head. "But I've never slept as well as I have the past two days than I have at the tower in five months-"

She let out a weak, saddened, laugh. "I-... He took me to the farmer's market, Peter... I haven't been to one since..." she let out another chuckle. "He got hurt because I got too comfortable." She looked away. "Because I finally, for the first time in MONTHS, felt at home..."

Peter frowned, listening to her words. It was upsetting to know that she didn't feel fully at home at the tower, but it was also heartening to hear that she felt at home here.

He wanted her to come back to the tower, lord knows he wanted her to come back with them, but he couldn't take her from this place knowing it was like home to her. "I'm glad you've found a place for yourself."

She looked at him in surprise, tears spilling down her face. Part of her expected him to ask her to come back with him. To talk to Tony and figure this out- So for him to express he was happy for her, despite hearing the slight disappointed tone, was unexpected.

She smiled at that, more tears streaming down her face. "Thank you... And don't get me wrong, you and Aurora still mean the world to me and I want to stay in touch but I- I need time away from the tower. Even more so now than before..."

Peter nodded, understanding somewhat. "I can't say that it'll be the same without you, but I understand that you want to get away for a while. As long as you're safe, and you drop in to say hi every once in a while."

"I will, I promise. You two are always able to swing by too." She grinned. "And... I don't know if I won't ever return to the tower but... it'll be awhile at least." She explained.

"Yeah I wouldn't blame you if you stayed away for a long time. I guess we'll have to pay our visits here." Peter thought aloud, before snapping his fingers. "What about that cafe? The Hidden Heaven one? We could meet there every now and then for like, brunch."

"That would be perfect! I'd love that." She replied, happily. "Maybe bring our other friends along too!"

"Yeah! I'm sure they'd love a new place to hangout too." Peter responded with a happy smile. Even if it didn't really show through his mask, his lenses reflected a good bit of his emotion.

"Yeah! It'll be-?!" Kasey suddenly stopped, whirling around to face the window, eyes wide with fear. "You need to go." She told him, heart starting to race as she stood up from the bed.

Peter looked between her and the window, and jumped up from where he was sitting. "What? Why?" He asked, his voice riddled with confusion.

"A-Aura- I heard her scream- I-I don't know where she is but- She's really hurt-" She replied, shaking fearfully.

"What-" Peter glanced at the window again. "But we just went out on a search? How could she have gotten hurt from that?" He didn't doubt Kasey's hearing, but it was shocking.

"I don't know but you need to go find her!" She turned to him. "I-I'd go with you but..." She hesitated.

"But what?" He asked, nervously standing on the edge of his heels. If she wouldn't come, that was fine, but his immediate reaction was to ask why.

"Tony can find me out there. I-... I can't risk that." She replied.

Peter paused, but realized Kasey should stay here, for her own safety. He nodded swiftly and headed for the door. "Okay I'll go, and I'll keep you updated."

"I- Atlas is off right now so I'll just... try to keep an ear out, I guess." She chuckled faintly. "Please be safe..."

"I will, promise." Peter told her. He still kept his tone somewhat quiet, heading towards the roof access.
