Chapter 58
Matt turned to the group, using his crutch to stand and make his way over to them. "I don't believe you two would be able to find much just by standing around and theorizing where she could be. It'd be better if you went out to search for her."
Claire looked at him and nodded. "He's right. She could be anywhere by now. If she was coming here, she'd be here already."
Peter paused and outstretched his ankle, finding that he could move it comfortably. "You're probably right, she might be hiding somewhere around Hell's Kitchen. It might be better if we split up too, to cover more ground."
At this point Aurora was sitting up, having been feeling well for a good amount of time now. She felt she'd be able to go out and search. "Yeah, but let us know if you hear from her, will you? I'm not going to come back to take her or anything, but I'd like to know if she's safe." Aurora pointed the question at Matt and Claire.
Claire nodded at Aurora. "We'll let you know if we hear anything from her. At the very least we'll tell her to reach out and just let you know she's safe."
Peter went up the roof access staircase first, heading out onto the roof. "I'm going to head southwest, see if I can find any hint of her that way." He explained, before heading off that way.
"Thank you guys, for everything." Aurora told them both, pulling her mask back over her head. It was a lot more comfortable now, considering she wasn't gasping for air. She followed Peter up the stairs and onto the roof. "I'll head northeast."
Peter nodded at that. "Just keep in touch, alright?" He told her before taking off towards the southwest area.
"Will do." Aurora took off to the northeast, making sure to start out slow and steady, working her way up to a comfortable pace.
Claire turned to Matt, waiting until he nodded at her to speak. "She's coming here, isn't she? That's why you sent them off?"
Matt nodded solemnly. "She showed up at the office, so Foggy is going to be bringing her here. Karen should also be coming with them."
Claire sighed and nodded. "... do you really think they'll help Tony catch her?"
"I'm not sure. On one hand they seem to be very loyal to Tony, but on the other, Kasey is their friend and they care deeply for her." Matt told her, sitting down on the couch. He held his crutch in both hands, leaning forward to rest his forehead against it. "If anything, I'm more worried that this will create a rift between them all."
"I think the two of them would probably hear Kasey out at least... but we both know Kasey isn't good with conversations when she's stressed out and tired." She chuckled faintly.
Matt nodded at that. "That's true." He was getting tired. This whole thing was dragging out over a few short days and he barely had a break from it.
Claire noticed and gave him a small smile. "I can wait for them and you can get some rest, even just laying back on the couch. You look exhausted."
"That's just part of it." This whole thing was mentally taxing. Not to mention, he couldn't even leave his apartment without the others causing a ruckus about it.
Claire sighed softly. "You know... I know you don't like the idea of staying put but it may do you some good. If we can get Tony to leave Kasey be then both of you can just relax for a bit. Properly without Tony or the spiderlings coming along." She pointed out.
"You're both exhausted in all aspects at this point." She chuckled a bit. "Besides, when's the last time you really took a break?"
Matt thought for a while before chuckling dryly. "I guess I haven't had a break in a long time. Never really had time for one."
"Well now you have a couple months of time to do so. If Kasey is going to take care of Hell's kitchen then all you need to do is teach her what you can without hurting yourself more and just being there for her." She pointed out.
"Maybe you'll have time to actually, you know, work for your firm?" She teased him lightly.
Matt turned his head towards her, a smirk on his face. He really hadn't been paying as much attention to the firm as he liked. "I could do that. And I could also, legal wise, look into Kasey's case."
She nodded. "See? You'll find ways to keep yourself busy that doesn't require you to jump across rooftops." She smiled.
Foggy, Karen, and Kasey arrived in front of the apartment building and got out of the car.
Kasey stood by the front door, waiting for them and Foggy noticed how anxious she looked and chuckled. "You wanna go on up there?"
She looked towards him, a bit surprised by the question and hesitated before nodding.
"Top floor, end of the hall." He told her and she nodded and disappeared inside.
Karen climbed out of the car, closing the door behind her. She came over behind Foggy, watching the tail end of Kasey disappear into the apartment building. "Ready to head in?" She asked Foggy.
Matt paused, tilting his head to the side. "They're here, sounds like Kasey went in first."
Foggy nodded and held the door open for her. "After you," He smiled at her.
Kasey was quick to make it all the way to the top of the stairs and stopped briefly about halfway down the hall, noticed Peter and Aurora weren't there anymore and hesitated at the door for a minute, a part of her telling her it was a dumb idea to come back here cause Tony would check here and she was going to get Matt in trouble and-
Karen laughed and faked a curtsy. "Well thank you so very much, Sir Foggy."
Matt opened the apartment door, sporting a soft and welcoming smile. "Kasey, I was worried when I heard you ran off from Tony." He made his small speech quick before Karen and Foggy came up. "You can still stay here as long as you'd like. You or I can let your friends know you're okay, or we can just keep quiet for now. I'll talk with Tony, and try to talk him down from his outlandish position."
Foggy laughed back. "But of course, Miss Page." He bowed back at her and followed her in once she stepped through the door.
Kasey startled slightly for a minute, not quite sure how Matt knew she was there but listened to him for a minute before darting forward a little bit and wrapping her arms around his waist, with a small whine at the back of her throat.
He could feel her trembling as she clung to him. "Q-quiet- p-please-" She mumbled. "w-want to stay..."
Karen laughed again and headed towards the stairs. She kept the same pace as Foggy, even though she was eager to see how Matt was doing.
Matt stopped talking, having been surprised by her clinging to him. Although, he didn't know what he had expected from her. "You can stay as long as you need to." He gently wrapped an arm around her, and brought her inside.
Foggy led her up the stairs. He was pretty sure Kasey was already inside and talking with Matt or at the very least being reassured she was okay.
She nodded at that and stayed clung to his side. She did her best to keep an even pace with him as he guided her to the couch and she immediately pressed into his side once he sat down.
She was just trembling uncontrollably at this point, tears starting to run down her face as she tried to calm down. 'It's okay. Matt's here. I'm safe. I'm home.' She told herself as she took deep shaky breaths. Her body felt so exhausted. It was still weak from the mass amounts of toxins in her system and from running across half of New York.
Karen came up the stairs, noticing the open doorway. "Seems that she already went straight in." She laughed lightly.
Matt grabbed a blanket from the back of the couch, throwing it over Kasey. "Just go ahead and relax. I don't think we'll be bugged for a little while. Your friends are still out looking for you."
Foggy laughed a bit. "I'm not too surprised." He replied with a small smile.
Kasey nodded at that. "O-Okay..." She agreed, pulling the blankets a bit tighter around herself. She tilted her head a little, hearing Karen and Foggy coming. "...Does she know we've met before-" She asked, lowering her voice. "Or do you want to explain that-"
Matt dropped his voice, speaking hurriedly. "She doesn't know we've met before, and if I try to explain the whole truth to her, I have to explain the whole truth."
She "looked" at him. "You know my dad, therefore we've met," She shrugged at him tiredly. "It's technically partly true-" She pointed out, keeping her voice low as they grew closer.
Though he isn't acting like much of a dad right now. She kept that thought to herself. She rubbed her eyes. "Up to you."
"Sure we'll go with that. Tie in the case and all that too." Matt thought aloud. He couldn't really put it together now, but he had it figured out by the time they came in.
She nodded at that. "Mkay..." She agreed, her voice growing sleepy as her body started to relax. Her body was still trembling some as she was still recovering from the toxins as the antidote was still making its way through her system since there had been so much... and her running across New York with the after effects of the sedation in her system too wasn't helping.
Foggy poked his head into the apartment. "Matt? I take it Kasey made it up here alright?" He asked, a small smile on his face as he stepped further inside.
Matt 'looked' over in Foggy's direction, letting a grin spread on his face. "Yeah, she came up and basically crashed. I don't blame her for it though."
Karen followed after Foggy, peeking into the apartment. She was surprised to see Kasey had fallen asleep basically on Matt, but was more surprised to see Matt's leg in a whole cast. "Matt!! I knew you did something clumsy again, but you broke your leg??"
Foggy grinned a bit seeing she had completely passed out, lying against his shoulder. "Yeah, she was pretty wiped out when she got to the office." He saw Claire shift in her chair with a small chuckle at Karen's comment.
"Well," She sat up a bit more. "Technically he's not the one who broke his leg-" She pointed out. She knew from how Matt had talked to Kasey a minute before that she didn't know about Daredevil but gotta keep the story consistent, right? "The two bullets he was shot with did."
Karen nearly had a heart attack at that comment. "BULLETS??" Karen exclaimed, staring in disbelief at Matt. Who would shoot a defenseless blind man?? "Matt you got shot? When were you going to tell me, or hell, go to the hospital??"
Matt would get Claire back for that later. He was going to lead into that. "I already went to the hospital, that's where the cast is from. They took care of it so quickly I didn't get the chance to call. I'm sorry. And it was just mugging, an everyday thing in Hell's Kitchen."
Claire quickly went to calm Karen back down. "He called me and I was able to get him taken care of a lot faster since I work there." She explained before offering her hand. "Claire Temple." She introduced herself.
Kasey flinched and tightened her grasp on the blanket, a whine coming from her at Karen's raised voice.
Karen eyes them both suspiciously, before extending her own hand and shaking Claire's. "Karen Page. I guess I should thank you for taking care of him." She shot Matt a stern look. "Since he isn't the greatest at doing that on his own."
Matt internally flinched from the sharpness in Karen's tone. Of course he hated hiding stuff from her, and he'd tell her one day just... today was not that day.
Claire chuckled lightly as she shook her hand. "I am well aware of that." She replied. "I can promise you I will chew him out if I hear he's gone and gotten hurt again." She reassured, her tone light and teasing.
"He's a pain in the ass but alas, I am morally obligated to keep helping this dumbass." She was grinning now.
Foggy cackled at that. "Can confirm, he is indeed a dumbass at times."
"Oh. Ouch." Matt commented, holding a hand against his chest in a faux offense. "Didn't know I'd be getting attacked from four sides."
"Well maybe you deserve it until you learn to be more careful." Karen told him, though she had a lighter air to her tone.
Kasey stirred with another whine and sat up a little bit, glaring towards the three of them. "S-stop harassing him..." she mumbled tiredly. "Not... not his fault..." she rubbed at her eyes a bit as she kinda drifted in and out.
"Also?" she sat up a bit more for a minute to glare at them more directly. "Shut the hell up, you're really loud..." She told them flatly, still giving them a tired deadpanned glare. "The whole building doesn't need to hear you."
Both Foggy and Claire stared at her in a bit of shock for a moment. That was very much unlike the Kasey they'd seen at all but they also couldn't help but laugh a bit at it, making Kasey pout a bit more at them before burying herself back into Matt's side, mumbling to herself.
"I'm serious... wasn't your fault..." She knew only Matt would pick it up at all.
Karen stared at the girl in confusion, but just shook her head. She didn't know why she was so comfortable here, but assumed it was just that she was dead tired.
It was nice, for Matt to hear that it wasn't his fault. A lot of the time he thought a lot of the bad things that happened around him were his fault. "Well, I guess we should cut this meeting short. I wouldn't want her to get angry." His tone was soft.
Kasey hummed in confirmation at that.
Foggy chuckled a bit. "Alright, alright. We'll let you guys rest then. Let us know if either of you need anything, alright?" He told Matt.
Kasey just gave a small nod and hum of acknowledgement.
Matt nodded. "Thank you for stopping by and dropping Kasey off. And yeah, I'll make sure to do that."
Foggy nodded and headed towards the door. "Of course." He told Matt before glancing back at Karen. "You comin?"
Karen nodded and went to follow after Foggy. "Seriously, let us know if you need anything. And be more careful or I'm getting you a dog." She threatened.
Matt chuckled lightly and gave a small wave. "I can try, but there's no guarantees."
Foggy chuckled and waved farewell to Claire as he led Karen back out to the hall, shutting the door behind them and leading her to the car.
Kasey hummed softly as she resituated herself. "'m sorry for worrying you..." She mumbled. "Couldn't come here first... Was scared they'd take me back... or tell him I was here..."
Matt waited for them to leave before turning his attention back to Kasey. "Chances are, you're right. They were expecting you to come back, but I don't know if they would've taken you back. I know they were probably torn between their loyalty to both you and Tony."
"Mmm.... Tony would've been upset if they didn't..." She replied. "He's... He's upset with me..." She shifted a little bit more but stayed snuggled up against him. "...He- He saw the fights from the past couple days..." Her voice was soft and anxious.
Matt frowned, knowing what that implied. "So he's seen some of the damage you've done, and what you're able to do." It wasn't good, but Matt had already told himself he'd train her to do better.
She nodded a little bit, rubbing against him as she did. "...He wants to contain me..." She trembled a bit and hissed the word out as if it were a toxin in her mouth.
"He-...He said I killed someone..." She whispered, tears flowing down her face. "And I can't even remember that!" She trembled as she started to cry.
"I just remember realizing there was blood in my mouth-" She shook her head as she took a shaky breath.
"He thinks I'll do it again and again- He wants to t-treat me like- like I'm a feral animal! Keep me under- under lock and key! Constantly observed!" she gripped the blanket tighter, shuddering with a sharp and shaky inhale as she panicked.
"He thinks I'm too dangerous to be loose."
Claire watched them both, concern in her eyes as she listened.
"Well-" Matt paused, trying to formulate what he was trying to say. He didn't want it to come out sounding wrong, but she needed to know. "You are dangerous, but it's not necessarily your fault. It's some sort of ingrained reaction, possibly adrenaline induced. I've been thinking I could help you to control that reaction, and help you help yourself."
He felt her shift to look towards him, rubbing at her eyes. "...Do... Do you really think that could work?" She asked softly.
Claire nodded at that. "I think it might. It'll take a lot of work depending on how ingrained it is. And it is likely triggered by adrenaline but it's very likely due to past trauma as well. It's almost instinctual for you to react that way because all you know in that moment is that you have to protect yourself." She explained.
"It's kinda like trying to break a bad habit. It's gonna be hard and you will fall back on it often before you'll be able to really start doing it less and less."
Kasey glanced towards her, listening to her. A trauma reaction? It made sense... And everyone she's bit had been from- oh. She felt her stomach drop. She had bitten Matt... And Tony... or at least tried to bite Tony...
"I think learning different ways to handle those situations will help you and with more options, you may not resort to such a drastic one as often." Claire pointed out.
"...but I could still resort to it..." She pointed out. "and I don't have to bite someone to-..." She looked away, remembering what happened back at the corporation.
"I think that it will work just fine. Claire's right though, it will take a lot of work and a lot of time, but you should come out a better person for it." Matt responded with a grin.
"We can start working on it when you've gotten some rest and when you're feeling better."
Kasey turned back to him and nodded with a small smile before hesitating. "What... What if Tony shows up?" She asked him.
"I'll deal with him. Try and talk him down." Matt shrugged. He was able to argue his cases in court, he should be able to argue hers in his own home.
"Mmm... good luck, he's pretty stubborn..." She replied but let herself curl up next to him again, her body fussing about wanting to sleep.
"Hey, if we have to throw hands with Stark, we will." Claire told her confidently.
"Don't worry about it right now Kasey, just get some sleep." He told her, before turning to Claire. "I don't think you'd want to fight him." He chuckled lightly.
Kasey nodded again, pulling the blanket a bit tighter around herself and drifted off again.
Claire shrugged. "Doesn't mean I won't throw hands with him if he tries to take her." She pointed out.
Matt continued to laugh. "Well, I appreciate you wanting to fight him. Shows you care." She also might be in better condition, considering her lack of a broken leg.
She smiled a bit. "Well yeah. I don't think locking her up will help the way he thinks it will." She replied. "If anything it'll make the situation worse." Her eyes softened as she glanced at Kasey's sleeping form.
Matt slowed his laughter, a more somber tone taking over. "That's why she should stay here for a little while. I'll show her some tips, and try to mature her skills."
She nodded. "I think it'd do her a lot of good. I also think her resting and not worrying about Tony and the spiderlings for a couple days will really help too. Give her a chance to breathe and actually relax."
She suddenly remembered that she had yet to check on Matt's injuries. "Shit, I completely forgot to check you over in this chaos." She chuckled a bit. "And she looks pretty comfortable snuggled up against you like that."
In all honesty, Matt had forgotten as well. The pain from the bite had blended with the other injuries, so he hadn't even thought about it until now. "I mean, I think they're fine."
She sighed. "And they might be, but that doesn't change the fact I need to at least change the bandaging on them." She pointed out.
"...Yeah, I can't argue with you there." Matt responded, motioning to the wrapped bite mark. "Don't freak out, but... Kasey bit me here."
Claire let out a deep sigh. "During her panic attack, I assume?" She asked him, going to grab the supplies.
"Yep. I tried to calm her down but that was a rough idea. I think I helped her in the long run, but..." He flexed his arm, feeling the wound move under the fabric.
She came over and carefully unwrapped it to take a look at it and grimaced. "Geez... She really got you good... Like- her teeth have to be sharp to have punctured the skin this cleanly. Thankfully it looks like she cleaned it up well and quickly. I don't think it'll need stitches, just keep it cleaned up and wrapped and it should heal quickly."
"Well I don't plan on rubbing dirt on it or anything, if that's what you're concerned about." Matt replied with a light tone.
She rolled her eyes. "If your shoulder wasn't injured, I'd punch you." She told him flatly. "But... Do you think he'll come over here?" She asked him after a minute, checking his upper arm's injury as well.
Matt was glad she was checking his wounds, even if he was joking about it. "He might, especially if we tell him she's here."
"Are you going to?" She asked him as she finished changing his bandaging on his arm. "I'll have to check on the others once she's up and about again." She took a seat again with a sigh.
"I think he should know, maybe not now, but eventually. Otherwise he and the spiderlings won't stop looking for her." Matt explained.
She nodded a bit. "I get that the two of them are worried about her but the chances of Stark coming with them are pretty high... But you're right. They won't stop looking for her..." She agreed. "But she's clearly scared of them taking her..."
"I know she is. So I'll wait for her to rest before even bringing the idea up to her." Matt told Claire, already planning how he'd talk to her about it.
"Alright. Do you want me to take her to the bed or you wanna just leave her be?" She asked him. "Cause I'm pretty sure she's gonna be out for a few hours at least."
"She's been sleeping like this a lot." He told Claire, alluding to her sleeping position. "It can't be comfortable for her neck. She can take the bed tonight and I'll take the couch."
She nodded and very carefully scooped her up, blanket and all. "She's so light..." She noted with a small smile as Kasey shifted to lay against Claire's shoulder. "I'll be back in a minute." She told him and took Kasey to his room. She laid her down in the bed carefully and Kasey immediately buried herself into it with a small hum.
Claire chuckled and carefully pulled the hairband from her hair, letting it fall around her shoulders as she slept.
She set it on the nightstand and came back out, keeping the door open so she could hear her if she got up. "Alright, she's settled down in there now."
Matt waited and listened, to make sure Kasey settled down alright in the bed. After he heard Claire give the all clear, he stretched out on the couch, glad to have the room for his leg.
Claire chuckled. "You gonna get some rest now?" She asked him.
Matt let out a dramatic sigh. "If I must, I will try to get some rest if it will make you feel better."
She laughed. "Well, what else are you going to do, hmm?"
"Well I was planning on working out some, especially my calves. Can't skip leg day and all that." Matt responded, completely joking.
"Sir, do not make me break your other leg," She replied, her tone teasing as well. "But seriously, get some rest. You'll need your energy if Stark shows up."
"Especially if he shows up." Matt knew that Tony wouldn't be easy to deal with. It was hard to fight against guys of that scale. "I'll try to get some rest."
She nodded. "I'll be around if you need me, alright?" She told him.
"Alright, help yourself to anything in the fridge, by the way. It's mostly drinks... and some eggs. But it's really all I can do now to pay you back." He chuckled tiredly.
She chuckled. "How about you pay me back with healing up so you can train her?"
"Yeah yeah, I'll make sure to heal as fast as I can." Matt stifled a yawn, turning inwards to face the backside of the couch. It wasn't long before he was slipping off.
