Chapter 57

This time, Peter spoke to Matt, Claire, and Aurora. "Kasey woke up at the tower and she's not happy. She broke out and took off, probably heading back to Hell's Kitchen, so we've got to be ready for her."

Aurora let out a sigh, having known something like this would've happened. She had kept her mask off, figuring it was too late to put it on anyway. "She'll probably make a beeline for here. This is her safe house."

Claire looked at them both, concern in her eyes. "But she knows you're here." She pointed out. "I don't disagree that she'll want to come here but I also know she's not going to because she knows Tony is expecting that and you two are here waiting for her..."

Peter paused, taking that thought into consideration. Claire was right, it would be too expected of Kasey for her to show up here, but where else would she go?

"I don't know anywhere else she would go. I don't think she would go back to the corporation, and I don't think she would go to our other friends' houses either. That'd be too obvious too..." Aurora spoke, at a loss for ideas.

Claire shrugged. "I don't know her well enough to say..."

---

Kasey was running as fast as she could, knowing Tony was right behind her.

"A-Atlas- give me directions to Nelson and Murdock's-" She told him as she sprinted across the rooftops.

"Not the apartment?" He asked.

"N-no. He'll expect that." And she vanished as she cloaked herself, allowing her to throw Tony off her trail.

"Atlas, resist any potential traces if you can."

"Right." He guided her into Hell's kitchen once more and got her close to the office with a few last instructions.

"I'm going to shut off so he can't track us. You got it from here?"

She took a shaky breath. "Yeah."

"Alright. Be safe, Kasey." Atlas powered off as she landed on the roof of the building and slid down into the alleyway and dropped her cloak as she headed inside.

Karen was at her usual spot in the office, sitting behind her desk with her computer open and on, to one side of her and a few files to the other side.

She held one file in her hand, having been going over some of the details to log into the computer. It paid to have a detailed filing list of their clients, potential clients, and cases all in one place.

She was glad to have Foggy in his part of the office, making the place seem less lonely, but wondered what Matt had gotten himself into this time. Honestly, how clumsy was that man?

Kasey found her way up the stairs, stumbling a little bit as her heart was racing before finally locating the office and hesitated for a minute, listening to the two heartbeats inside before peeking the door open, almost cautiously.

When she sensed it was Karen and Foggy was in the other room, she relaxed a bit. Well... this would be a bit awkward...

"U-um... h-hi-" She greeted quietly, still breathing a bit heavily from running.

Karen was still focused on the file, and had put on a sort of customer service voice. "Come on in, I'm just finishing up a couple-" Once she finally looked up, her eyes widened with recognition. "Kasey?"

She stood up, beckoning her inside, out of pure muscle memory. "What are you doing here, do I need to call Tony again?" She glanced down at the jacket, thinking it looked strikingly familiar. She just couldn't put her finger on it...

"N-No!" Kasey quickly and perhaps a bit fearfully answered, taking a step back towards the door. "P-Please- Don't call him-" She looked up at Karen with wide, fearful eyes. "Please-"

Karen put her hands up in a faux defense. "Woah- Okay. I won't call him. Why don't you come in and take a seat? You look seriously worn out." That hoodie looked so familiar, but it just wasn't ringing a- wait....

Is that one of Matt's hoodies?

Kasey hesitated but came further inside, wrapping her arms around herself and gripping onto the hoodie. She was trembling a little bit as she located a chair and sat down, pulling her legs up to her chest once she did.

Foggy heard Karen talking to someone so he poked his head out and was surprised to see Kasey sitting there. He hesitated for a minute, knowing that Karen wasn't aware he knew her but was a bit surprised to see that Karen seemed to know her as well.

Karen stood there awkwardly for a moment, before popping the question. "This might come off as a bit weird, but... where'd you get that hoodie?" She asked. It occurred to her that this probably wasn't the time or place for that, and followed up with a couple more questions. "Is there anything I can get you?"

Kasey shifted a bit at the question but focused on the latter one. "...Water?" She asked after a moment. She had just run across New York after all-

Foggy knocked on the doorframe a bit to alert them that he was there. "Hey, uh, what's going on here?"

"Water?" She asked, before the answer kicked in and she scurried off to the water cooler they kept in the office, filling a paper cup with water. She brought it back over to Kasey, holding it out for her. "Oh, uh, this is Kasey. Kasey, this is my friend Foggy."

After all, she had no idea the two had met before.

Kasey had turned her head when Foggy poked his head in and gave a meek wave. She knew Foggy would have a lot of questions, even more so over the fact that Karen already knew her. She just sipped on her water to avoid having to say anything.

"Hey..." He greeted back, glancing at Karen, curiously. "So... How do you know each other?" He asked her.

"Well, a little while back, remember how when I brought your coffee back it was slightly cold? And Matt made some weird cryptic remark about it-" She paused, finding herself off track.

"I bumped into Kasey at the Hidden Heaven Cafe, along with a couple of her friends. They were lost and needed to borrow a phone." She shrugged humbly.

Foggy made a small, "Huh." at the story. "So that's what took you so long." He chuckled a bit. "Well, Kasey, what brings you here now?" He asked her.

She shifted a bit, not looking at either of them. "...Didn't know where else to go..." She admitted softly.

Karen sent Foggy a wary glance, before crouching down in front of Kasey. "What do you mean-?"

She remembered her reaction to Karen offering to call Tony. "What about your friends?"

She shook her head. "Can't... He'd look for me there..." She explained. "Can't let him find me..." She mumbled.

Foggy looked concerned too, hesitating a bit. He felt like he should call Matt but... He knew Karen didn't know the two of them knew Kasey.

Karen was concerned for the girl, especially for the way she was reacting to calling Tony, and her friends. "Is there anyone we can call?"

Kasey hesitated, glancing at Foggy and then to Karen and shook her head. "...No."

Karen let out a deep sigh. She stood back up, running a hand over her hair. "Well we can't exactly keep you in the office forever..."

Foggy hesitated before glancing at Karen. "Matt might be willing to let her hang out there for a bit?" He suggested but noticed the way Kasey tensed up a little bit. He almost hadn't noticed it. Was that not an option? He gave Karen a shrug. "I can give him a call at least?"

Kasey just sat there, her arms wrapped around her legs as she stared blankly at her lap.

Karen thought for a moment before shrugging. After all Matt was supposed to be home for a good while, so he'd be able to watch Kasey. That made sense, right? "I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to give him a call. The worst he could say is no."

Foggy nodded at that and slipped back into his office and called Matt, leaving Karen to watch over Kasey.

Karen watched Foggy slip behind the door to his office, and turned to keep an eye on Kasey.

Matt had been listening for any sign of Kasey, but wasn't surprised that he didn't hear her. He knew she didn't want to be found so quickly. His phone lit up and started calling out 'Foggy', so Matt got up and answered. "Something up?"

Foggy had sat back down at his desk when he called. "Uh, yeah, um..." He glanced back out there where Kasey was quietly talking to Karen though it was more like Karen talking at Kasey. "Kasey's here." He lowered his voice down so Karen wouldn't quite hear him. "She seems pretty freaked out..."

Matt didn't know where he had expected Kasey to turn up, but the office was unexpected. "There was a whole situation that happened, and she doesn't want to be in a place where Tony could easily find her." Matt explained to his friend.

"If you can tell her without making Karen suspicious," Matt had assumed Karen was there since Kasey turned up at the office. "let her know that she's more than welcome here, and can stay here as long as she likes."

Foggy nodded a bit. "I will. I told her and Karen I'd ask you if she could come hang out there since she doesn't seem to want to go anywhere else..." He sighed softly. "But wouldn't he look for her there?" He asked Matt, leaning back in his chair. "Cause I'm pretty sure she would've come to you instead of here if she felt that was an option."

"Yeah, but then again it may seem like it's too obvious of a spot." Matt suggested, speaking in low tones so the others couldn't easily hear. "Tony thinks Kasey is dangerous. So I might or might not be able to talk him down."

"And if you aren't able to?" Foggy asked him. He was concerned about Kasey. He knew Tony wouldn't hurt her but the poor kid seemed terrified of the idea of him getting ahold of her right now...

"I-" He paused. He really didn't know what he'd be able to do if Tony wouldn't listen. After all, Daredevil was now on a hiatus. "I don't know. But I'll do what I can."

Foggy took a deep breath and sighed. "I'll let her know and if she agrees, I'll bring her by. Though if that's the case, Karen may want to tag along... Did you know that Karen's already met Kasey???"

Matt irked a brow, wondering just who all Kasey knew. "No, I actually don't think that I knew that. Karen didn't mention that before, did she?" Then again, before not too long ago, the name Kasey wouldn't have meant anything to him, so maybe he just didn't remember it.

"No, she just now told me about it. Apparently Kasey and some friends got lost and needed to borrow a phone. It was the day she was late with the coffees about a week ago." He replied.

Matt remembered that day clearly. The coffees had been a bit colder than usual, and the taste was somehow staler. "Well, I'll give you two guesses as to who those friends of hers were." Granted, he didn't know the names of the friends from that day, but he could make an educated guess. On one of them at least.

It didn't take Foggy long to catch on and he sat there for a minute. "There's no way- No!" He laughed a bit. "Matt, if that's true then Karen met them and had no idea-" He chuckled at the thought. "But if she knew Kasey's name, she might know theirs too..." He pointed out. "Which is... interesting to say the least... If she tells us who was with her then she'll have unknowingly revealed them to us..."

Matt smirked, finding Foggy's reaction to be so... Foggy. He thought about the fact that Karen probably knew who the spiderlings were, and what that implied. "I wouldn't ask about it, if she happens to mention it, I also wouldn't react. As long as the identities are kept separate, things should turn out fine." Matt wouldn't mention the fact that one of them was already unmasked in his living room, and that Kasey had shouted her first name.

Foggy nodded again. "Right. Uh, I'll let you know if we head over." He told him. "I think it'd be best for her but..." He glanced out there again, seeing her curled up in the chair, hiding in the hoodie.

"I'm not entirely sure that she'll agree... she's... she seems defeated Matt... scared, defeated and exhausted..."

"I figured as much. With what I overheard from Tony's call, he thought she needed to be contained." Matt let out a sigh. "Just let her know I'll be on her side here, and the red is up to her."

"I will. I'll call you back in a bit, but you good with Karen coming too?" He asked him.

Matt turned his head in the direction of the spiderlings, which were still hurriedly chatting with Claire about Kasey. "Yeah, she can come with." He'd just have to shoo them out when she came.

"Alright. We'll probably be headed over shortly." He replied. "Talk to you in a bit." He hung up and poked his head back out. "Hey, so Matt says she's welcome to come stay at his place as long as she needs." He told them.

Kasey looked up a bit at that. She already knew he'd say yes but it still made her relieved to hear it again. "O-okay... thank you..."

He nodded. "Let's head to my car and I'll take you over." He moved to the front door, having already grabbed his keys. "Oh," He glanced towards Karen. "He said you're welcome to come if you want to-"

Karen perked up at this, having been wanting to go along to check on Matt anyway. She wasn't quite sure what happened to him, but she'd do the usual, asking if he needed anything and all that. "Yeah, actually, I'd love to."

Foggy smiled at that. "Alright then, let's get going." He held the door open for both of them, Kasey stepping out into the hallway to wait for them both.

Karen followed after, ending up being the tail end of the group of three.

Foggy led them to his car and once they were all settled in, he headed towards Matt's.
