Chapter 49
"So I take it that's a yes from the Devil?" Aurora inquired, peeking over at Tony.
Tony nodded. "Both of you are able to come. But!" He turned to her. "You need to break that fever first."
She dropped her head onto her arms and let out a groan. "Ugh... That'd be a lot easier if I had any control over it."
"Let me take a look and you get more rest." He replied as he got up to get some stuff.
"Really, I'm sure it's nothing." Aurora protested, both not liking the idea of getting looked at, and not wanting to bother him.
"You aren't getting out of it now, come here." He told her firmly.
After a little more protesting, she finally got up and followed Tony to where he was. She wasn't going to risk ticking him off.
Tony took her temperature and hummed when it was running a fever. "You're still feverish. Friday, run some scans please."
"Of course. It'll be a moment."
"I could've told you that first bit. 'M basically burning." Aura said, pretty nonchalantly for the situation.
"Yeah but we're gonna see if we can narrow down why." He replied.
"My scans are indicating the fever is produced from stress." Friday chirped.
She threw her hands up in reaction to Friday. "See? I told you it was fine."
She was both relieved and embarrassed, having made Peter and Tony fret over supposedly nothing.
Tony frowned a bit at that but sighed. "Alright. I just wanted to make sure since we were out in the rain and you were hurt."
Peter quietly watched them both, his eyes still concerned. "I mean... I know stress can do that but... that's really bad if it's that bad."
"I mean..." Aurora gave a halfhearted shrug. She knew she was stressed, but she also had a constant level of stress anyways, so it shouldn't have been that bad... right? She waved a dismissive hand. "Seriously, you guys shouldn't be so worried over a fever."
"Aurora, you had a serious open wound you ran around half of Hell's kitchen with. I'm allowed to be worried about you." He replied but ruffled her hair with a grin. "That's what parents do, right? Worry about their kids?"
Aurora turned to him, an amused look on her face. She knew he acted like a dad sometimes, but she never heard him admit to acting like one. "Yes, that is what parents usually do. Are you proclaiming yourself our dad?"
"Hey, Kasey's the one who declared it!" He laughed. "That's what she called me when she made that call- and I'm pretty sure... Karen? was it? thinks I am, so...." He shrugged.
"Karen was so nice." She considered swinging by that law firm to thank her personally, but then realized she never actually saw what Karen had looked like. "Well you play the role of a dad pretty well."
Tony laughed at that. "Hey, it's not that hard!" He teased her. "Having rowdy teenagers who get themselves in trouble is another thing!"
"The fact we regularly jump off buildings and purposely run into danger doesn't help." Aurora chuckled lightly.
"It certainly does not." He grinned. "Especially when anyone hearing that out of context would be worried sick-"
"At least you can't legally have CPS called on you since you aren't our legal guardian." Aurora shrugged. In truth, she did like to look up to him like a dad.
Tony laughed again. "True! That is a blessing!" He replied.
Aura laughed in response, a slight shiver going down her spine. She pushed that aside, figuring it was just from the fever. If she was lucky, maybe the fever would break before they visited Kasey.
"But! You need to get some more rest if you wanna come tomorrow, alright? Try to break that fever." He told her.
"At this point I'm going to be doing nothing but resting." Aura complained. Although, she strangely still felt drowsy, even though she had napped before Tony even made the call.
"Well that's how your body heals and fixes itself so yeah, you are." Tony replied. "That's not to say you can't do other stuff around the tower but I just want you taking it easy, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah." Aurora let out a sigh, figuring she could sit down somewhere and work on patching her suit. That should count as rest, she hoped. "Okay."
"Good. Let us know if you need anything, alright?" He told her before giving them both a small wave. "I'm going to go sort through the files some more." He told them before disappearing towards the other lab he had moved it to. He hadn't wanted it getting damaged.
"Alright, will do." She nodded and watched him walk off, before retrieving her suit, and a repair kit she kept around the place. "I think I'll just work on stitching this up. Wouldn't want to show up in shreds tomorrow."
Peter laughed a bit. "Alright, I'm going to make Kasey some more of her web fluid so if you need me to toss you something, let me know." He replied.
"Will do!" She found her way to a comfortable enough chair, sitting cross legged on top of it with her suit in her lap. She got to work fixing the rips and frays.
"You good if I have Friday play some music?" Peter asked, glancing back at her.
"Fine by me!" Aurora flashed him a thumbs up before returning back to her work. Some music would be nice, she wondered how she hadn't thought of that before.
Peter grinned. "Friday! Can you put on one of the rock band playlists I have?" He asked her, looking up at the ceiling.
"Certainly." After a moment the beginning of Don't stop believin' started playing in the lab.
He grinned wider at that. "Thanks Fri!"
Aurora rolled her eyes with a smirk, and began threading a needle to work with. At some point, she told herself, she'd have to make another copy of the suit for when this one had gotten too damaged.
Peter was happily working on some webbing for both him and Kasey while the music played.
Aurora hummed to herself, another chill going down her spine. It was odd, really, how her skin felt hot to the touch, yet she herself felt almost... cold?
Peter glanced over at her after a while. "What do you think Kasey's been up to?" He asked after a minute.
"Hm?" She replied, only for the question to actually render afterward. "Oh! Uh, I don't know. Resting, hopefully. She took off in the middle of the rain, already pretty shaken up..."
"Yeah... I just know she's not great at sitting still for long." He chuckled.
"That's for sure." Aurora responded with a laugh.
"I just hope she isn't doing anything too crazy when she should be resting." He sighed.
"Yeah, I hope not either. That's the last thing she needs." Aurora shook her head, barely noticing the light dizziness following after.
"Yeah, whether or not she does, who knows." He replied. "How's the suit coming along?"
Aurora held it up, tracing her finger along the hemmed side. "Pretty good. Just a few more patches and it should be good as new. Well, mostly." She glanced over at him. "How's the webbing?"
"I've been trying to see if I can make Kasey's a bit easier for her to weave." He explained. "It's harder to do without her here to test it but I'm hoping it'll work."
"I'm sure she'll appreciate it. And she can test some of it tomorrow, if she's up for it." She spoke, dropping her suit back into her lap to finish it.
"Yeah! I'll bring it with us!" He agreed.
She smiled softly and turned back to her suit, putting the finishing touches on it.
Peter worked on making a safe container for them to travel in that they could easily bring along.
Once she deemed the suit finished, she folded it up and set it aside for the following day. She leaned back against the chair, before shifting to keep weight off her side.
Peter looked over at her and grinned. "You wanna play mario kart?" He asked her.
Aurora gave him a side glance. "Mario kart? Are you serious?" She cracked a grin. "Do you even have to ask, of course I want to play Mario kart."
"Then come on!" He grabbed at her arm as he pulled her out of the chair with a grin.
"Dibs on Daisy." Aura was pulled from the chair and a sharp pain went through her side. Usually her healing factor would've kicked in by now, but she didn't want to ruin anything.
Peter grinned. "Well, what if I wanted to be Daisy?" He teased her as he dragged her to the living room.
"That's why I called dibs. Because I 100% knew you were going to choose Daisy." Aurora teased back, following him to the living room.
He laughed at that as he started setting it all up. "Nah, Ned might have fought you for her though-"
Aurora found a seat, sitting down and letting out a breath of relief. "Explaining everything to Ned and MJ is gonna be a whole new issue." She had forgotten to fill them in.
"Oh... oh yeah... that's gonna be fun..." He replied as he sat next to her. "Though Ned will probably be jealous of us having met, let alone thrown hands with Daredevil," he laughed.
"Oh you're so right. Next thing is gonna be us having to get him a signature." She laughed lightly, picking up one of the controllers.
Peter laughed. "Man, you know he will!" He replied. "I don't know how Daredevil would react to that though-" He laughed again.
"I know he's good, but he's still kinda freaky. With the red eyes and everything-" She picked up one of the controllers. "I get the feeling he wouldn't do autographs."
Peter chuckled. "Yeah, you're probably right. And those eyes are pretty creepy. I mean, yeah you can't see through ours either but they look like you can't see through them at all-"
"Well I-" She thought for a moment. "Do our eyes look scary to people? I've never even considered it. I just thought the mask looked cool." She wouldn't dare admit she modeled her mask after his.
"I mean, at least we can make expressions-" He pointed out. "His didn't seem to move at all-"
"Yeah, they're kinda stiff and... dead." A shiver went down her spine. It was so weird, especially when it seemed like Daredevil didn't even look at them directly when they were fighting.
Peter shuddered a bit at the thought. "Yeah, it's... it's spooky."
Aura shook her head to refocus on what they were originally doing. "Right, anyways. Rainbow road?"
Peter grinned. "You really wanna start with chaos?"
"If you start with the hardest course, the rest seem like a piece of cake." She responded with a smirk.
"You have a good point." He grinned as he moved to the course.
Aurora sat forward, determined to beat Peter at the course. It didn't help that she was terribly awful at Rainbow Road, but she wouldn't let that stop her.
Peter was also pretty bad at it but he loved playing it and the chaos it ensued.
Once the race started, she was doing pretty well, only to falter through the second lap and come in third at the end. She was too engulfed in the game to realize the subtle shaking in her hands.
Peter however came in 7th and groaned. "That was rough." He whined.
"You're telling me. I completely flopped halfway through! I'm just lucky I got a bullet." She told him.
"You really were." He agreed. "Hmm... Which one do you wanna do next?" He asked her.
"Mushroom gorge. That's my favorite one." It was an easier course, so she leaned back to play it through.
Peter nodded and selected it. "It's a fun one." He agreed.
The track was smaller than rainbow road, so it went quicker as well. Much to her dismay, she placed tenth in the race, after a series of unfortunate events involving red shells.
Peter placed first and was cackling at the replay of the multiple red shells. "Wow- They must've really had it out for you-"
Aurora hit him playfully. "You jerk! Most of those shells were from you, don't even lie."
He laughed a bit harder. "It's not my fault it gave me three red ones!!"
"No it is. It is absolutely your fault." She told him bitterly, though all in jest. "This next course might be my last. I know we like just started, but I'm getting pretty tired."
"That's fine. It's probably better for you to get some rest soon anyway." He agreed.
"I thought that nap earlier would've helped but-" She shrugged. "Guess not."
"Well, when you're sick your body needs a lot of rest." he pointed out.
"Yes, as I've been told." She said bluntly. "I've just never been the type to stay in bed when I'm stressed, of all things."
"Then maybe you are catching something?" He tilted his head. "Cause surely the fever would've calmed by now... but you look kinda pale." He pointed out.
"That, and I'm cold. Like how does that work?" She threw her hands up in aggravation. "Fever but cold. Doesn't make sense."
Peter looked concerned. "You're cold? That... Maybe it's chills? Your body is trying to cool you down cause you're too hot?"
Aurora noticed the look of concern and tensed up. "Yeah, maybe... I'm sure it's nothing, just trying to cool down is all."
He noticed and sighed. "Aura... Please, if you feel worse than that, let us know." He told her.
"I will! Don't worry about it. It's really not that bad, but if it worsens I'll be sure to let you know." She told him, not even sure with herself if she would.
"Promise?" He asked her.
Aurora hesitated, and then relented. "Promise."
He nodded at that. "You want some water or anything before you go back to sleep?"
Aurora shook her head softly, pushing herself up from the couch. She stilled for a moment to let a wave of dizziness pass her by. "I think I'll be alright if I just lay down for a little while."
"Okay. Just... let me know if you need anything, okay?" He told her. He was anxious cause with their healing factors, getting sick was much more rare most of the time...
"I will." She started to head to her room, before turning. "Try not to worry about it." She then turned and headed towards the guest room she had claimed as her own.
Peter sighed. "I'll try." He replied before leaning back on the couch. He really hoped it wasn't anything serious...
Aurora went to her room, closing the door behind her. She lifted her shirt to peek at her wrapped wound, and noticed a bit of discoloration around the bandaging. "Must've worn it for too long." She spoke quietly and flopped onto the bed to pass out.
