Chapter 41
Kasey had interrogated the guy a bit while Matt was gone, making sure no one would be looking for the girl and after a bit of poking at his injuries he admitted that no one knew of her yet.
Kasey then, despite how much she wanted to make it permanent, she just knocked him unconscious. He'd be out for a while.
She then sighed in frustration and flopped backward onto her web, waiting for Daredevil to return and tensed when she heard him speak.
He was standing in the entrance to the alleyway. "There's people worried about you, you know. Your friends most of all." He heard her breathing and heartbeat, letting out a small sigh. "Come on, let's get back to my apartment. You can stay the night there."
She started to reply, sitting up when the last bit processed through her mind. Wait. His apartment? But that- This was Daredevil, wasn't it? Then what-...
She "stared" down at Matt, brows furrowing. "...Your apartment?" She asked slowly after a moment.
"Yes, my apartment. I'm not having you stay out and about in Hell's Kitchen, trying to find somewhere to sleep in the pouring rain." Matt responded, 'looking' up in her general direction.
"I'll have to let Tony know I found you and you're safe too. But if you don't want to go with him tonight, I won't force you." He knew they were tense right now, and he felt that forcing her to go back would only worsen things.
"I thought it was about time I entrusted you with my name as well. You've more than earned it." He spoke earnestly. If there was going to be this much back and forth, he'd rather her know who he was. That, and she practically saved his life.
And just like that the pieces she had all fit together and she sat a little straighter upon realizing. Did he just- He did.
She wanted to say something, anything but she couldn't find the words.
After everything she put him through, taking care of her, her running off, her getting him shot- She tensed a little at the thought. Taking care of her again and now to come out here with a damn broken leg and bullet wounds?! Finding her taking out her anger on people, she had no doubt he saw the others...
To... To find her seconds away from killing someone...
And yet... He was still offering her a place to stay? And he wasn't going to force her to go with Tony?
Her breathing hitched a little bit before she slowly pulled her hood back and pulled her mask and goggles off, Atlas had been overridden and shut off so Tony wouldn't track her, and let the rain run down her face, mixing with her tears.
He-... He said she earned his trust to the point of telling her who he was.
She didn't feel like she earned anything.
She took a shaky breath, one of her hands covering her mouth, trying not to just fully break down then and there.
She had killed a man and almost another. She doesn't understand why he's still helping her... Why is he still being so damn kind to her?
She would've given up on someone like her forever ago. Handed her back over to Tony or the police or just let those men take her and leave with her life-
She didn't deserve any of this.
"I-I-... I don't understand-" He voice was broken as she cried. "Why are you still helping me?"
"Because I see a lot of myself in you. Well, you know what I mean." He cracked a grin, leaning against the alley wall. At this point he wasn't worried about the rain soaking through his clothes anymore.
"You're young. I don't want you going down a dark path in life and finding yourself stuck at the end of your path. Now is a vital time to make those changes towards yourself." Matt spoke, frowning once he heard her break down and cry.
"Let's get you somewhere dry, and get you something warm to drink, okay?"
She was still crying while she listened to him before slowly starting to nod before remembering the man behind her. "W-What about him?" She asked, her voice wavering.
"I've got a friend in the force. Wrap him up tightly and I'll call to let him know what happened. He'll take care of it from there." Though he wasn't sure his friend would be too happy about receiving a call this late- well, this early in the morning.
Kasey gave a shaky nod and swiftly set to work, making sure he couldn't move or get free. "It'll... It'll be awhile before he gets out of that probably-" She told him before spinning another line and lowering herself to the ground, her feet lightly splashing when they touched it.
She had a tight grip on the web, unsure if she could let go. Both because her legs felt like jelly and in the sense of walking away from what she started.
She could feel it clawing at her mind demanding her to finish him. She was so close! And it's not like he could stop her!
But another voice replied, soft spoken and familiar. It was her own.
'But if you do then he'll be distraught with you. He wants to help you. You've been desperate for a place like home and he showed that to you. It's okay to let go. Trust him.'
And she took a shaky breath as she took a step towards him and the webbing slowly slid out of her hand as she took another and another but hesitated, feeling the end of it in her hand.
'Trust him.'
She took a deep breath and let go, taking another couple larger strides towards him before sprinting towards him and despite her swiftness, she made sure not to wrap her arms where he was injured as she buried her head into his chest, sobbing.
"I-I'm s-sorry- I'm s-so sorry- I-" She choked out as she clung to him, knowing her legs would give out if she let go of him.
Matt was startled, to say the least. It wasn't every day he was rushed by a confused teenager and attacked with a hug. It took him a moment, but slowly he wrapped his arms around her as well, providing the comfort for her that she so desperately needed.
"It's okay. Things like this happen, and that's why you need someone in your corner. Foggy, Claire, Tony, both your friends and I are here for you, okay? Don't ever forget that."
This time, perhaps, she'd be alright.
She nodded a little bit, having tensed when he hugged back slightly only to melt into his embrace. She was exhausted, cold, and soaked to the bone at this point. She stayed there for a minute as she tried to calm down before quietly asking, her voice a near whisper. "C-Can we go home?"
Matt couldn't help but sprout a smile at the question. "Yeah, we can head home. We've got to drop that girl off at the station before heading back. Then we can get you into some dry clothes too. You're soaked."
She gave a small hum of acknowledgement before reluctantly pulling out of the hug and looking up at him. "Dry clothes would be nice..." She agreed quietly. "D-... Did you get her name?" She asked, shifting a little bit, still gripping his good arm to keep herself standing.
"I didn't catch it, no. Foggy or Claire might have." Matt kept close to her, mostly for her security, and started their way back to the car. He'd message Tony later, once they were safe back at the apartment. "Did you hurt yourself at all? Claire will want to know."
She checked where her stitches had been before shaking her head. "No. Guess they all healed." She replied. "I, uh," She remembered she wasn't just soaked with water and tensed a bit. "Might ride on the roof-" She didn't think Foggy or Claire would appreciate the blood in their car... She also stopped and pulled her mask back over her head but left her hood and goggles off.
Foggy and Claire were waiting anxiously with Kassidy when Foggy saw Matt approaching with Kasey at his side and sighed in relief. "Alright kiddo, you might have to scoot over," He told Kassidy who gave a quick nod and slid to the side seat away from the side they were approaching.
"You're going to ride on the roof?" Matt irked a brow, before shaking his head. "You really are something. We can squeeze into the back, but if you insist I guess I can't stop you." Matt replied. He took it slow to the car, just hoping he hadn't hurt his leg further. He couldn't tell, as the pain was pretty consistent.
"I'm sure it will come out. The blood."
Kasey gave a faint laugh. "I don't think Foggy would appreciate it though." She pointed out with a slight smile.
She could sense the three in the car now and she was keeping even pace with Matt but suddenly tensed up, the hairs on her neck standing up when she felt Foggy, Claire, and the girls eyes land on them.
If their heartbeats were anything to go by...
She hesitated continuing towards the car.
Matt heard the heartbeats as well, and paused alongside Kasey. He knew what she was thinking, and it was to be expected. "They'll get over it. If you think riding on the roof would help, that's okay."
Kasey glanced towards him a bit before giving a small nod. "I... I might actually have to swing back- I don't think I'd be very welcome at the station looking like this..." she pointed out quietly. "But I promise to head straight there and wait for you."
Matt nodded, understanding where she was coming from. Since she promised to head straight there... "Okay, just head straight there, and try not to get into any more trouble."
She nodded again and finally, though be it reluctantly, let go of her grip on him and stepped back a couple steps before turning and launching herself up to the nearest roof with her webbing.
Claire stepped out of the car just in time to watch her go and looked at Matt. "You aren't stopping her?" She asked.
"She's headed back home, and I trust her to stick to her word. I think I finally broke through to her." He was quite proud of himself for doing so, too. It had been difficult these past few hours, and he just hoped to put it behind them.
"Let's get this girl to the police station." Matt leaned against the car, before ultimately making his way inside, careful not to impose on Kassidy.
Claire climbed back inside as well and Foggy headed toward the station.
