Chapter 38
Foggy had watched Tony shut the door and helped Matt back towards the couch. "Well that was eventful."
Claire scoffed slightly at that. "That's an understatement." She replied as she took a seat as well.
"I don't think I've ever referred to myself in the third person that many times in one day." Matt thanked Foggy again and took a seat on the couch. He let out a tired sigh, leaning his head back against the back of the couch.
Foggy laughed at that. "T'is the life of a vigilante." He teased him.
"Mmm. And one who can't take his own advice at that." Claire smirked.
"Okay, but you didn't have to call me out like that in front of Tony Stark." Matt replied, a smirk playing on his lips. He heard something and cocked his head ever so slightly. Somebody was upset up there... It sounded like Kasey. "I think I just heard Kasey yell, but not in an endangered way."
Claire had started to snark back but stopped when he spoke again. She raised an eyebrow. "Is everything-"
"THAT'S NOT THE DAMN POINT STARK!"
Claire and Foggy both froze and tensed at the hostile tone from Kasey's voice. It was sharp and venomous.
"Uh... That doesn't sound good..." Foggy quietly pointed out.
Matt flinched from the sudden loudness, and was confused where that reaction had come from. Everything seemed fine not so long ago-
"When Stark told us he got that information from their building? Seems he didn't inform Kasey, which is what set her off." He narrated the quieter parts of the argument.
Foggy swore under his breath as her voice picked up again.
"-GOING TO HIDE THIS FROM ME?!"
Claire put a hand over her mouth before looking at them. "D-Do we do anything?"
"YOU DIDN'T TELL ME! THE ONE DAMN PERSON WHO HAD A RIGHT TO KNOW!"
Foggy glanced at Matt, unsure of what, if anything they could even do. Honestly, they might make it worse considering they were told before her...
Matt frowned, but ultimately shook his head no. "I think that this is something we shouldn't interfere in. What's happening is between the three of them, and having outsiders try to join in would just further upset things."
They heard her growl, "Don't." and something about the same thing before hearing her kick something and the faint thud of her landing on the other roof and pretty quickly Matt could only hear her footsteps if he really focused until even they disappeared into the night.
Matt let out an exhausted sigh, reaching up and pinching the bridge of his nose. "Great. There she goes." He groaned.
"Kasey just took off, heading west along the rooftops. Seems whatever that was about upset her pretty bad."
Foggy and Claire turned to him. "What? But she's still injured!" Foggy pointed out. "Even if she's got that crazy healing, doesn't change the fact she just about died an hour ago!"
Claire ran a hand through her hair. "Are they-"
A light knock at the door made her stop. "I-I'll get it." She told the two of them and went to open the door to see Tony standing there with Interweb who was holding her side. Wait, was she injured? Kasey didn't do that, did she?
Tony looked tired and apologetic. "Sorry to come right back but someone," He gently nudged Aurora. "got herself hurt earlier..." He explained.
Claire just gave a quick nod. "Come on," She told Aurora, leading her back down the stairs and into Matt's room.
Aurora followed after Claire, once again returning to Matt's room. She was tired, and upset, and felt like she had been holding something, so carefully protecting it, only for it to crack from her own grip. "I'm sorry to come back here for this. Though maybe it wasn't as bad as it was earlier.."
Claire shook her head. "I rather tend to it than let you swing home with it exposed." She replied as she started to clean it, pulling the fabric of the suit out of the way as she worked. "You're lucky. The, I'm assuming knife, didn't hit anything important. It was close but not quite."
Aurora took the suit, ripping it lightly so the area was more exposed, including a little more of her back, where thin spindly scars reared their ugly heads. At this point, she didn't really care about the suit. She could always fix it, or not. She hadn't been too great at fixing things lately. "The guy was an idiot. I don't know how I wasn't able to dodge him. It was stupid of me to even engage them."
Claire frowned at the sight of the scars but focused on the wound. "Alright, I'm gonna stitch it up and wrap it and you should be good to go." She told her before setting to work.
"Thank you Claire. You're too kind." Aurora told her, spacing off slightly while she worked.
Claire smiled a little bit. "Sometimes I wonder if I'm too kind but then I remind myself that no one else is gonna willingly patch up people like Daredevil and I'm morally and probably legally obligated to take care of him." She chuckled as she finished stitching and started wrapping the wound. "Alright. All done."
"Well at this point I think you should be charging them." Aurora joked, with a light tone. She moved her arm, glancing down at the stitching. It looked pretty professional, a lot better than her own stitching attempts sometimes.
Claire laughed. "I've certainly thought about it." She admitted with a grin.
"You'd be rich in no time." Aurora smiled, touching the bandaging gently.
Claire grinned. "Bold you to assume either of them can pay me."
"Oof, harsh." Aurora felt somewhat better now that the wound was stitched and clean, but an ache lingered behind it.
Claire chuckled a bit. "You feeling a bit better now?"
"A little. I think I'm just needing a whole lot of sleep now." She replied, putting on a lighter tone to her voice.
Claire nodded. "Then go get some at home, alright? And try not to pull those." She told her.
"Yeah, I'll try not to. No promises though, especially in this line of work." She headed back out, before pausing and peeking her head back into the bedroom. "Thank you again Claire."
"Of course." She replied, following her out of the room.
Tony had come down the stairs and just kinda, leaned against them. "...I take it you guys heard some of that?" He asked after a minute, once Aurora went into the bedroom.
Matt looked in Tony's direction, picking up on the tired sound of his voice. "Yeah, we heard a little bit of it. Sounds like she was pretty upset with you guys."
Tony sighed and nodded. "Yeah. We... We messed up. She's... pretty pissed." He confirmed softly. "I hadn't expected that big of a response but I knew she'd react badly when told. I just didn't expect it to be that soon."
Matt nodded in understanding, having heard the whole thing. "She has every right to be angry, but there also wasn't a whole lot you guys could do about it. While you were there, she was here, unconscious and sickly. She couldn't have come, even if you called to tell her you were there."
Tony gave a small shrug. "Yeah but she deserved to know regardless. I just knew she'd insist on coming whether she was ready, mentally, physically, or whatever, or not."
"I think you made the right call. She was in no position to go anywhere, let alone a facility filled with people wanting to kidnap her." Matt assured Tony.
Tony nodded a bit with a faint chuckle. "Yeah. There's that." He agreed. "Would that stop her? No." He shook his head slightly.
"You're right about that. Even I found that she's incredibly stubborn and persistent." Matt replied with a small grin. He knew he'd have to go out to look for her at some point.
Tony laughed a bit. "Yeah, I don't know if she was that way before all of this but she certainly is now."
"That's for sure." Matt nodded, listening for the girls. "Sounds like they're almost done."
Tony nodded at that. "Good. Once I get her home, I gotta come get Kasey." He sighed.
"I'm not sure she'll want to be found, Tony. She seemed pretty adamant about getting away from you two." Matt told him.
Tony shrugged a bit. "Yeah, well I'm not letting her run around in the state she's in either."
"I'll keep an ear out for anything, and let our mutual friend know what happened. If anything comes up, you'll be the first to know." Matt knew how much Kasey meant to Tony, and while he meant well, Kasey wasn't exactly happy with him at the moment.
Tony sighed a bit but nodded. "I appreciate it... and hey," He hesitated for a moment. "If she happens to come back by, just... let her hang out, yeah? I'd prefer her being here then out there doing who the hell knows what."
Matt nodded. "Of course. I know this city is dangerous, so if she happens to find her way back here, I'll let her stay."
It's not the city hurting her that I'm worried about... Tony thought to himself but seemed to relax a bit at that. "Thank you." He noticed Aurora come out of the room. "All good?"
She turned, showing the bandaging. "Good for now. Claire's an expert at this stuff."
Matt grinned. "That she is. It's getting pretty late so I won't hold you guys here." He sat up, folding his hands in his lap. "I'll let you know if I hear anything."
Claire leaned in the doorway with a smile. "Helps that I'm a nurse." She replied.
Tony chuckled but nodded at Matt. "Again, thank you." He told him before shooing Aurora up the stairs. "I'm sure we'll be in touch for whatever reason soon." He told him as he headed up the stairs behind Aurora.
"I'm going, I'm going." She skipped up the stairs, careful not to move in a way that would hurt her side. Slipping out the door, she gave one last wave to the others.
Tony did the same as he shut the door behind them. "Alright missy. We're getting you home so you can rest." He told her.
"Yeah, and I need to fix the suit. Again." She had just spent that time installing stealth fibers and everything too.
"If you want me to help, I can." He offered. "But I'll let you rest at the tower." He told her as he activated the suit.
"Thanks, but I'm going to try and fix it on my own first." She replied tiredly. The dark of the night was slowly beginning to lighten. "God we've been out for so long."
Tony laughed. "Not used to it?" He asked her as he hovered up and over to the next rooftop, letting her follow after him.
"I am, it's just that I don't like to be up for so long." Aurora followed after, finding it easier to move with the wound sewn. "I value my sleep."
"Mmm. I'm used to not getting any." He replied, making sure to go slow enough for her to keep up.
"I'm sure. You've been doing this hero business a lot longer than I have." She kept up, and even sped up a little bit so he wouldn't have to lag behind so much.
"You can take it slow if you need to." He told her but kept her pace. "Hopefully Kasey will at least try to stay out of trouble till I can go get her." He sighed softly before noticing the light of the sun starting to get filtered out by some storm clouds starting to form. "Great. Rain."
"Fantastic. Tired and soaked." Aurora grumbled lightly, talking as she went. "To be fair, I don't think she'll want us to find her. We-" She frowned. "I ticked her off pretty bad."
"No, we did." He corrected her gently as he led her towards the tower. "Matt said the same thing but she doesn't get a choice in the matter right now. I'd rather play the bad guy to her then let her take it out on anyone around her." He sighed.
Aurora let out a sigh. "Yeah, that makes sense.." She just had a gut feeling that doing that would aggravate her more. She saw the tower coming closer, and was glad to see it. "I'll have to tell Peter at some point too."
"If you prefer, I can." He offered her. "We're almost there, you want to just meet on the balcony?" He asked her.
"It might be better if you do. He looks up to you so he might not feel as hurt? I don't know." Aurora shook her head, glancing up at the towering building. "Yeah, meet you up there."
He nodded at that and flew up to the balcony and landed to wait for her. He'd probably wait a few hours before calling Peter. The kid needed sleep.
Aurora looked up at the balcony, and down at the front entrance. The quick way or the long way? It took a moment of debating before she was too tired to attempt swinging up onto the balcony. Instead, she went inside and took the elevator up to the balcony floor.
Friday happily escorted her to the top floor and Tony walked inside to meet her, rain starting to fall. "Alright, you've stayed over long enough to know the drill." He told her as he placed the bag on the counter. "I'll be back soon hopefully."
"Yeah, yeah. I know it well enough." She looked outside, noticing the rain falling onto the balcony. She just hoped Kasey was staying dry. "You call me if anything happens."
"I promise." He confirmed. "If anything, Friday can update you in real time." He grinned a little bit. "Try to get some rest, alright?"
"I can try." She nodded, pulling her mask off once again. She fiddled with it in her hands, running her thumbs over the lenses. "Um... let her know I'm sorry, will you?"
"I will." He promised her. "I'll be back as soon as I can." And he stepped outside and took off into the rain.
Aurora watched him leave and lingered, before heading to the spare room she usually used. She kept a few extra clothes there, so she'd use those to change into. Flopping onto the bed, she stared at the ceiling, and did so for a long time.
