Chapter 35

The dial rang only a couple of times, before Peter picked up. He usually wasn't one to keep Tony waiting on a phone call. "Hey Mr. Stark! Not to be rude or anything, I swear I'm not, but uh... why are you calling so late?" Peter sounded a bit tired, and unaware of what was currently happening.

Matt tilted his head slightly. The voice on the speaker sounded familiar, and it also sounded like a teenager? He assumed that this 'Peter' person was a close friend of Kasey's.

Kasey's head tilted a bit as well, focusing in on the voice.

Tony watched her as he replied. "Heya Pete, I'm sorry if I woke you but I thought you might wanna talk to Kasey," He explained, watching the way Kasey honed in on the phone, tense and unsure.

"Oh! Is she up and going now? I'm glad to talk with her, I was just wondering how she was doing earlier today, but then again I really didn't have a way to contact her..." Peter shook his head, redirecting his thoughts back to the conversation. "Anyway! Kasey, are you up and feeling better yet?" He was so blissfully unaware.

Kasey had very slightly pushed away from the ceiling focused on the sound of Peter's voice. She was hesitant and tears still spilled down her face despite being upside down.

Tony saw her heartbeat stagger a bit from her anxiety but froze when she spoke.

"P-Peter?" Her voice was shaky and cautious. "I-Is that really you?"

Peter was a bit confused by the question, and concerned by the tone of her voice. "What? Of course it's me! You alright over there?" He asked, 'there' alluding to Hell's Kitchen.

She took a shaky breath as more tears fell down her face, slightly moving away from the ceiling some more. "I-I-" She choked back a sob. "I don't know-" She replied, shakily.

Tony took a deep breath. "She, uh, woke up in a bit of a panic and won't listen to any of us." He explained. "We keep trying to tell her she's safe but-"

At his voice, Kasey pulled closer to the ceiling again, tensing back up. "No! You're lying!" She hissed. "You're trying to trick me- Stop it!" She curled tight against the ceiling. "Stop playing with my head!"she sobbed.

Tony sighed. "That happens."

Peter didn't know what had brought on this all of the sudden, but he knew that Mr. Stark wouldn't have called him unless he thought he could help. "Kasey, you're perfectly safe with Mr. Stark and the others! They're trying to protect you and help you get better, not trying to trick you or mess with your mind."

She shook her head. "They're lying- I-I can't- Peter, I can't-" She cried, shaking. "They keep saying I'm safe and I'm not!" She argued.

This made Tony narrow his eyes in confusion. That was progress to some degree but raised more questions.

At least she was talking to him, he was glad to have that. "Why aren't you safe? Just... take a look around you! Where are you right now?" He was trying his best to ground her.

Kasey gave a choked laugh. "P-Peter... If I could look around and actually see I wouldn't be in this situation!" She snarked back, her voice shaky and tired.

Tony flinched a little bit at the slight sharpness in her tone.

An audible slap echoed through the speaker, no doubt stemming from Peter smacking himself in the face for his stupid tired brain to say something like that. "Kasey, I'm sorry I didn't even mean it like that-" He let out a regretful sigh.

"I just want you to know that you can trust them. What keeps making you think otherwise?"

Matt visibly flinched, the sudden sharp sound of her voice taking him by surprise. He had to admit, thank was a pretty dumb thing to say, even if the kid was tired.

She gave a small scoff at Peter but was quiet as she tried to find the words to his question. "I-... I'm not... here," She tried, hesitant and unsure of herself. "I'm... I want to trust them... I want to believe them but I can't." She stressed with another shaky sigh.

Tony was starting to get an idea of what was wrong but... She's never acted this way that he knew of...

"I wouldn't be trying to convince you that they're safe if I thought they weren't." Peter told her, thumbing over an idea in his head. He didn't know if it would work, but he'd give it a try. "I know that you can't trust them right now, but maybe in time. For now, can you trust me, in my trust for them?"

Matt kept his attention on Kasey, continuing to listen to her heartbeat for any sudden changes. He talking with the boy was a good sign, but she still seemed to have a mental block.

She was still as she processed the request. "You.... You're not understanding... I am not here." She tried again. "Trust or no trust, it won't help make them stop."

Peter was at a loss for words. Kasey was right when she said he wasn't understanding. He couldn't begin to understand! Something was screwing with her mind, and he was helpless to help her. "If you're not there, then where are you, and who isn't stopping?"

She made a noise of frustration as she struggled to explain. Her mind tugging her so many different ways was not helping. "T-The uh... Balcony! What we talked about on the balcony-" She tried. She couldn't make herself say it completely because she was fearful that if she admitted it aloud it would make it so much worse than it already was.

Tony quickly realized. "Oh! The night the three of you got back from your trip?" He asked.

Kasey tensed a bit but looked down towards him with a nod. "Y-Yeah-"

"The balcony-" Peter squinted, trying to remember what she was talking about. It took him barely any time at all to catch on to what she was saying. "The balcony!" He was joyous in the fact that he remembered what she meant, before that feeling faded at the fact that he remembered what they had talked about. "You're... there?"

All this talk of here and there was twisting Matt's mind, and he couldn't begin to imagine what secret conversation had gone on between the teens.

Aurora had been listening from the door to the bedroom, after having moved there from her previous spot. After hearing Kasey's most recent statement, her eyes widened. If she was stuck there... it was awful to think about.

She took a shaky breath before answering. "Or at least that's what everything is telling me..." She confirmed. "And I can't get out. They won't let me out." She was trying to keep her breathing and heart rate steady.

Her head was getting dizzy from being upside down for so long but her senses refused to detach from the ceiling and she was pretty sure Matt would not appreciate his ceiling getting torn up-

Wait. Matt- Her heart rate spiked as she remembered that she had yet to know if he came back or if he was okay. She could sense someone else in the room aside from Aurora and Tony but... Her mind was muddled with everything happening. She could barely sense them at all. Anything outside the room was beyond her.

But... every inch of her system was telling her it couldn't be Daredevil standing there... Her heartbeat spiked again as what her mind had shown her came back to the front of her mind and she took a sharp shaky breath, curling in on herself a bit as tears fell down her face.

T-That wasn't true... I-it couldn't be! R-...right? That didn't happen- Right?

She started to panic a bit as her mind started to pull her back into its twisted version of reality. "N-no, no, no-" She mumbled to herself, trying to push away from it but her mind hissed in her ear, 'If it didn't happen then can you prove it? '

She whimpered a bit, not hearing Tony trying to get her attention. "Please stop... That's not- That didn't- I-I-" Her voice shook as she mumbled to herself.

Her mind, no, The Boss' voice hissed in her ear again. 'Then where is he? And if it wasn't him then was it the other?'

Kasey completely froze up at that and she didn't even process herself detaching from the ceiling and falling towards the bed as her heart skipped a beat.

Matt was able to hear her heartbeat spike, and was once again on high alert. He knew she was having another episode, where whoever was in her head was doing something to her. The next thing he knew, she was falling from the ceiling. "Kasey!" He shouted out.

Tony had quickly moved forward and caught her in his arms, eyes filled with worry. She had tears pooling down the sides of her face. "Kase, hey, it's okay, I got you."

Kasey didn't respond to him but had tensed under his touch but didn't lash out.

'Oh, and what will your friends think when they find out That you purposely killed a man?' His voice purred smugly in her ear and she gasped a bit, eyes fearful.

"Wh-What? I-I didn't-!" She mumbled to herself but the man laughed at her.

'Then where did the blood around your mouth come from, hmm? Don't you remember lunging at the one who attacked him with the intent to kill?'

Kasey choked back a sob as the memory cleared in her mind. "I-I didn't mean-"

'Oh save the bullshit. We both know you did. And I'm honestly surprised he didn't hand you over then and there. After all, he may be a bit extreme but at least he's not a killer like you.'

Tony frowned as she trembled in his grasp. "Kase?"

'But instead of handing yourself over to save him, you got him shot. Multiple times. Possibly even killed. Do you know what people do to animals that are out of control?'

She whimpered as she trembled, her heart racing as fast as it had back in the basement when the man showed up.

'They lock them up and put them down.'

Her heart rate spiked at that and she was pulling away from Tony suddenly and fast enough that she threw herself off the otherside of the bed, pulling the IV pole to the ground along with the heart monitor that had been on the nightstand, forcing it to unplug the wires as it fell on the opposite side of the bed with multiple thuds.

Matt heard her heart spike and motioned for Claire. "Her heart is spiking all over the place again!"

He tried to get close to Kasey, to somewhat be able to contain her, and keep her from hurting herself further. "Kasey, you've got to calm down, you're going to end up hurting yourself and causing some serious damage!"

On the other end of the line, Peter had begun to panic. "Wh-what's happening over there Mr. Stark?! Do I need to come?" He was genuinely concerned for both his friend and the occupants of the room.

Tony swore under his breath as Claire rushed into the room due to the noise and Matt calling for her.

"I- I'm not sure you can," He explained to Peter. "Not without permission at least," He glanced at Matt who was trying to get closer to Kasey.

"Careful- she might snap-"

Before Tony could finish warning him, she was snapping at Matt when he got too close, her heart still racing in her chest.

Matt dodged accurately, and dipped behind Kasey, grabbing her arms and pinning them behind her back. "Kasey, we aren't your enemy right now." He didn't want to be bit by her at all, especially after hearing what she did to that guy from before.

Claire's eyes widened, watching him dodge her bite. "Matt!" She called in worry but was relieved when he grabbed hold of her, putting a hand on her chest.

Tony had watched Matt move around her surprisingly quick and made a soft, "Huh." noise as he watched him restrain her.

Kasey tried to pull free of him, unable to reach him at all as he was behind her now. She was shaking in his grasp as she panted heavily from her panic but when Claire called out, she stopped for a minute. Her brain processed who was restraining her now that Claire called him out and her breathing slowed to a softer, slower pants.

She was still trembling a little bit as she cried and honestly? She was terrified at the moment. She didn't remember Matt coming back but here he was. And... she looked a bit confused for a moment. Why did he smell like Daredevil? She had all the pieces but her mind was too focused on the idea that they were two different people for her to put them together.

Was... was he mad at her? For running off? She could also tell he was injured but wasn't able to pinpoint where but... was that because of her? She was a bit tense in his grip but made no moves to try to get free either.

She felt more tears drip down her face as she sat there, her voice muttering a near silent and broken sounding, "I-I'm...I'm so sorry..."

Matt heard her breathing begin to slow, but kept her pinned, just for the moment. He didn't want to let go just yet. "You don't have to be sorry Kasey. I can't begin to imagine what you're going through, but we aren't here to fight you, but we are here to support you."

Matt waited for a few moments more, before he tried another thing. "I'm going to let go of you, but you can't lunge at anyone or bite anyone, okay?"

She gave a small nod of her head, mumbling another apology through her quiet broken voice. "...I-I shouldn't have r-run off- I'm sorry- It's all my fault..." She had relaxed in his grip but was still shaking as she cried.

Matt slowly loosened his grip on her, until he was sure she wouldn't go against what he said, before fully releasing her and taking a limped step backwards. "It's okay, you're not at fault just because someone else decided to take you. You were just enjoying your time out, and they were in the wrong for desecrating that."

That made Tony turn to Matt. That was news to him. But he dared not say anything that would upset Kasey.

When he released her, she slowly slumped to the ground into a sitting position. She shook her head. "I-I ran off a-and stepped into th-the alleyway in an unfamiliar place... I was t-too comfortable... t-too-" she choked back a sob as she shook.

"Too at home."

Tony's eyes widened and then softened towards her. He was probably the only one there that knew what that truly meant...

"Still, that doesn't make it your fault. You were innocent in all of this." Matt reassured her. He'd have to explain all of this to Tony later, he was sure of it, but for now he'd wait for Kasey to finally calm down. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"It's going to be okay now. You are safe, and you're among friends."

Aurora watched all of this unfold, practically getting whiplash from how fast everything was moving. She couldn't help but feel relieved at it all, that Kasey had somewhat of a breakthrough, even if she was still upset.

She looked up at him, her eyes red from crying but hopeful at least until the voice hissed in her ear again.

'He's lying- one wrong move and they will ditch you. They find out what you did and they will hand you over.'

She tensed up but at his gentle touch, she just about melted but hesitantly pulled away from it. "I am not innocent in this..." she admitted softly.

"To me, you are." Matt pushed back, not willing to let her think for a moment that she was the bad guy in all of this. He was willing to stick with her for as long as he was able, just to help her feel secure again.

Peter had become silent on the other end of the line, straining to hear all that was going on. He felt that he didn't need to go there, but at this point he couldn't go back to sleep even if he wanted to.

"I got him shot!" She argued before covering her mouth with her hand with sharp gasp, realizing that she had yet to really acknowledge that aloud.

This confused Tony. Who was she-? Daredevil? That's unlike him so did he take it for her?

Oh. It was safe to say that he hadn't thought about her feeling guilty over that. He had been too clouded by his own guilt to even fathom that Kasey was dealing with guilt as well. "Kasey..."

Matt wasn't quite sure how to comfort her over this. He couldn't exactly out himself, but he didn't want Kasey believing that she caused him excessive harm. In reality, he had chosen to take that bullet for her, it wasn't her fault. "He's alright, up and walking even." He technically was telling the truth.

She shook her head in disbelief. "He really shouldn't be...It was... really bad..." she replied, quietly. "I almost got him killed." She took another shaky breath. "They almost killed him because of me- I-" Another shake of her head as tears fell down her face. "He shouldn't have had to even save me."

She wrapped her arms around herself tightly. "I could have prevented all of it had I just not run off- Hell, I could've prevented it by not running out into sniper fire-"

Tony stared at her. She did what-

"Had I not been able to fight? We-..." She took a jagged breath and looked away, curling up tighter, not finishing her train of thought out loud cause she knew it was what the voice in her head was wanting. She could feel it lurking close, practically radiating with smugness.

'You could've saved him had you just surrendered yourself even. Honestly, risking his life for that chance of saving yours? What would you have done had he been killed?'

Tears spilled down her face again, choking back another sob.

"I don't think Daredevil would've let something like that kill him. I'm sure of it." He tried to lighten the mood, even a little bit. He knew Kasey was in an emotional pit at the moment, but the least he could do was offer a hand to pull her out of it.

"I can assure you that he is fine and doesn't hold anything against you for it. He made that very clear to me."

That made her stop and slowly lift her head towards him, seeming unsure if she believed that but...

"... You promise?" She asked softly after a moment. She was hesitant to just accept that as her mind desperately grasped at the hold it had on her.

"Yes, I promise." Matt told her earnestly. He didn't blame her for what happened, it was out of her control for the most part. He didn't have to take that bullet for her, but he did anyway. Now he was back home and she even helped to take the bullets out.

She stared at him for a long moment before giving a small nod. "O...Okay." She whispered softly. "I..." She hesitated as her mind tried to hiss at her but she focused herself onto his heartbeat which beat strong and steady and she gave a shaky smile. "I believe you."

Tony sighed in relief as she watched her relax more. She looked like a mess and exhausted but the small, genuine though be it a bit uncertain, smile on her face made him happy.

"Now, it's pretty late, so do you want to try and go back to sleep? It's okay if you don't, you can stay up here and maybe get something to eat or drink, or you can head back home with Tony if you'd prefer it." Matt offered, wanting to go with whatever option seemed most comfortable for her.

Peter heard everything seem to calm down and spoke in a quiet tone. "Is everything alright there then?"

Tony nodded after a moment. "Y-Yeah. I think so." He confirmed.

Kasey hesitated, thinking her options over. On one hand she felt like she was supposed to go with Tony. After all, she wasn't as injured anymore so no need to stay, right?

Yet... the whole reason she had even come to Hell's Kitchen... she hadn't been able to do it cause she went and nearly died.

And she was pretty sure Tony was gonna ground her for a month for sneaking off and ya know, almost dying.

But Matt... he was offering to let her stay? After everything? She looked confused by that but quietly asked. "I-...I can stay?" She sounded a bit cautious about even asking.

"You still have a good amount of healing to do, and Tony, Foggy, and I have a lot we need to speak about. So if you both are alright with it, you can stay some time longer." Matt explained, finding himself able to breathe much easier now that the conversation had been knocked down a few levels from the craziness of before.

"Um, is it alright if I leave the call then, Mr. Stark? But please do keep me updated if anything happens. I'll have my phone with me and I can swing by anytime." Peter spoke through the phone.

"Yeah kid, try to get some sleep." Tony replied. "I'll keep you posted."

Kasey looked towards Tony and hesitated before calling out to Peter. "Thank you, Peter..."

Peter hesitated, when he heard Kasey's voice. "You're welcome Kasey! Don't hesitate to call me if you need to talk about anything. See you later!" He hung up, presumably to try and get some more sleep.

Matt admired the friendship between the two, and honestly the three teens gave off very strong sibling vibes. Which was effective, given the three seemed to support each other greatly.

Kasey smiled a bit more at that but turned back to Matt. "I... I'd like to stay..." She quickly looked over at Tony. "I-If that's okay-"

He chuckled. "Yeah, kid. We can stay for a bit. Want Webs to keep you company while we talk?"

Her eyes widened a bit. "She's here?"

Tony grinned a bit. "Sure is." He poked his head out the door to see Aurora. "Come see her."

Aurora came into the room, and made a beeline over to Kasey. "Kase, you okay? I can get you something if you need anything." She wanted to make sure her friend was comfortable, and wanted to keep her company while the other talked.

Kasey nodded at her. "I will be." She replied. "Just want company right now."

Claire looked at the girls. "Call for me if you need anything. I'm Claire, by the way." She offered her hand to Aurora.

"Well I'm here to offer as much company as I can give." She grinned lightly, before extending her hand to meet Claire.

"I'm... Interweb." For now she wouldn't say her actual name. She knew these people were pretty trustworthy, but she didn't think she knew them long enough to tell them quite yet.

Claire shook her hand. "Nice to meet you. I'll be just outside." She told them before heading out of the room with Matt and Tony.

Aurora took a seat on the edge of Matt's bed, and let out a soft sigh. She was glad to have everything over with, the stress was beginning to get to her, among other things. "So, you doing a little better now? It's okay if you're not 100%, I get that."

Kasey nodded a little. "Yeah. Bit better. Tired in every possible way, but better."

"Well that's good to hear, it was getting a little scary. I've seen you upset before, but not like... that." She shivered, which caused her to wince lightly. "I'm not saying that to ostracize you or anything, or to make you feel weird! Sorry if it came off like that."

Kasey shook her head a bit. "No, it's okay, it's... it was scary for me too..." And the two quietly talked while the adults talked in the living room.
